  • In this pond management tutorial, we explain our approach (including a timeline) to creating the perfect family fishing pond. The idea was to create a balanced fish population emphasizing growing big largemouth bass. This video covers fish habitat, fish stocking recommendations, pond fish feed, fish feeders, bluegill spawning beds, electrofishing surveys, growing big bass quickly, managing bluegill in your pond, and much more.

It'd be awesome if you could create some content talking about alternative species you might find in your pond (be it wanted or unwanted). For example, I love fishing for carp, but based on what I know about them, it would be extremely challenging to balance them in an ecosystem.

Hello we purchased a home with a roughly 1500 square foot pond that is about 6 feet deep and approximately 3 years old. There is a lot of invertebrates and frogs. Ph is good and there is a lot of nutrition entering the pond via leaf litter in the fall. It is full of pondweed and naiad and they are growing incredibly fast. In May I have introduced eelgrass and coontail for habitat and oxygen. The pondweed and naiad are so dense we decided to get a small grass carp(knowing it may be too much later on). We also stocked one pound of fathead minnows to provide a future forage base. My wife wanted koi so we got 4 small koi. We are looking to put in an aerator in the next couple weeks before the fish load becomes too high. We are looking to add 3 dozen small bluegill fry and 1 dozen redear fry around September. Our goal is a bluegill pond. Are we on the right track?
