I am using hot water (about 150 F) and liquid laundry detergent for removing the cosmoline. I let the metal parts soak in the hot water / detergent mixture for a few minutes, agitate the parts in the mixture, scrub them with a brush, rinse the parts in clean hot water, then let them air-dry before a final wipe down. Metal parts are then given a light coating of CLP to protect them.
I did all these steps on a hot day (about 88 F) so the metal parts and barrel air dried quickly.
For the bore, I run clean patches, soaked in the hot water and detergent mix, through the bore many times until there are no or only very slight traces of cosmoline on the patch. I then plug the muzzle, hold the barrel upright and pour the hot water detergent mix into the bore from the breech end using a funnel. I let that sit for about a minute and then run a patch down the bore, pushing the water and muzzle plug out. I do this several times. Finally, several times I run clean patches soaked in just the hot water rinse (no detergent) through the bore followed by dry patches. The final dry patches should come out completely clean with no trace of cosmoline or anything else. Looking down the bore, held up to bright even lighting (blue sky, or a brightly illuminated wall), the bore should be clean and shiny with sharp lines for the rifling throughout its length.
