  • A short documentary I decided to make about the difference between Honeybees and Yellow Jackets. It has nothing to do with computer networking security, but it is a nice distraction.
    I used some Creative Commons Public Domain music from musopen.org/music/1500/ as the background.
    I filmed the insects here in Eugene. I hope you find it interesting. Enjoy.

So let´s help good beekeepers against Vespa velutina by placing one European hornet near the hive entrance (good beekeepers aren´t idiots like you and don´t kill bees) and let´s look for some wasptrappers. Then let´s use European and Asian hornets to kill all their bees.

But someone recently told me that you must add to the water a little drop of white wine, to stop the honeybees to be drowned with the wasps, since they are repelled by white wine.

      @Jerry Smith Name a one. Wasps eat flies, mosquitoes not that much, but I think that the "millions of other things" don't eat so many mosquitoes as wasps. Wasps are social insects, so they're more important than other insects when it comes to hunting pests. Birds may also eat some pests but not that much. If you can name 10 animals that hunt mosquitoes I'll be surprised. Even if you can, it doesn't mean the named predators hunt more mosquitoes than wasps.

    • @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26
      @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26 4 года назад

      @Jerry Smith Do you think I was joking? In my garden in Europe, I have like 3 lizards, 20 birds,, no fish, one frog, no turtles, five bats, a dragonfly, many spiders and one thousand wasps approximately. Wasps and spiders are the only fly/mosquito predators which make an effect. The others just hunt a fly at a time, while also eating many other insects and small animals.

    • @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26
      @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26 4 года назад

      @Jerry Smith I mean mosquitoes *and flies.* That's what wasps hunt the most. I watch bats every evening, they just go out for 10 minutes each day and hunt maybe two flies each. You can notice when they have a target and go after it. You haven't seen my garden, how can you know better? Another mistake, adult wasps sometimes pollinate but their brood needs meat. Honestly, I don't care about mosquitoes. I don't mind them, they're easy to kill. I care about flies and caterpillars. Yellowjackets hunt flies, paper wasps hunt caterpillars.

    One thing the bees have going for them here is this: Everybody knows a bee can sting a person only once because the stinger gets stuck and they fatally injure themselves pulling free. However, they can sting other insects, such as these yellow jackets, all they want.

  • @bobjacobson858
    @bobjacobson858 4 года назад +2

    I suspect that Joseph Colton is not a biologist, although I'm not saying this disparagingly. Nature, with its animals and plants, is neither good nor bad. Some explanations are offered to give additional perspective. (Disclosure--I'm an entomologist who has studied yellowjackets for nearly 50 years.)
    1) Honeybees are NOT native to the New World. The yellowjackets (with the exception of one species introduced from the Old World) ARE native to the New World, specifically North America. In the Old World, they are native to Europe, much of Asia, and the Mediterranean coastal regions of northwestern Africa.
    2) Yellowjackets fall into at least three species groups (depending upon which species one includes within the term "yellowjackets"). Some are scavengers, some are strictly predaceous, and others are both. The species shown is the video (Vespula pensylvanica which, strangely enough, is limited to the WESTERN half of the US, SW Canada and NW Mexico, and is correctly spelled with one "n" missing in the specific name) is predominantly a scavenger, but is sometimes predaceous as seen in this video.
    3) Yellowjackets are not "eager" to sting. People get stung for two main reasons:
    a) Nests are often hidden, and people aren't aware of their presence until they accidentally disturb the nests and get stung.
    b) Because some species of yellowjackets are scavengers, they sometime land where people accidentally put their hand on them (therefore, squeezing or confining them) and get stung as a result. There have also been cases in which a yellowjacket entered a beverage can, and stung the person in or on the mouth who attempted to drink from the can. During dry weather, walking barefoot around a swimming pool may result in a sting from a thirsty bee or wasp.
    4) Some larger species, such as the baldfaced hornet (a large black and white species found in every state except Hawaii, and the builder of large gray nests on tree branches and under eaves of buildings), are predaceous on house flies and some other pests species. This and a few related species are in the genus Dolichovespula, with the "dolicho" referring to their longer faces (compared to those found on members of the genus Vespula). By the way, the "true" hornets are relatively large insects, and one species (the European hornet, Vespa crabro) has become established throughout much of the eastern half of the US where it sometimes attacks bees, but is not as aggressive as many other species of hornets (mostly found in southern and eastern Asia).
    5) Paper wasps (genus Polistes--also known as "umbrella wasps" because of their exposed, often flat nest combs, and shown at 2:15 in the video) are NOT members of the genus Vespula. They capture caterpillars as prey, so they are generally considered beneficial.
    6) Honeybees are not "innocent" of stinging people. Colonies vary as to their defensiveness, with some much more likely to sting than others. The so-called africanized or "killer" bees represent the most defensive end of the scale, although other strains of honeybees can be quite aggressive.
    Hopedly, this sheds a little more light on this subject!

    I was essentially in the opposite situation. I thought I had wasps flying around me, prior to late 2004. But they were actually honeybees. Or I would question if what I was looking at was a honeybee or a wasp. As a result, my drawings of wasps prior to 2004 looked like drawings of bees. I should point out that honeybees can sting other insects more than once. But because we humans have thick skin, they usually leave their stings behind when they sting us.

    What is the difference between yellow jackets and wasps?

    • @princenadroj9766
      @princenadroj9766 6 лет назад

      Yellow jackets are larger and bulkier; while paper wasps have a slender body. Also, yellow jackets are more aggressive than paper wasps, due to their colonies being much larger and having a greater need for food.

      Bee: Black or brown, some species of bees have one orange strip.
      Yellowjackets: More beneficial, yellow and black striped.
      Hornets(Vespa crabro): The most beneficial, red head and looking like an huge yellowjacket.

    When I was 12 I was stung by a whole hive of yellow jackets...I hate them and will do anything and everything to kill them! I also don’t like bees but I understand how they are needed for human survival, so I leave them alone and they leave me alone...it’s worked out so far...kill the wasps and hornets and protect the bees, got it!

    If these bees are smart enough to pile on and overheat yellow jackets then why can't they do the same for the invasive species, the Asian Giant Hornet that has been sited in Canada and now Washington state?

    My son got stung mid summer by the same bumblebee. So.he has been frightened by the fat cute bumblebee since. But there might be a war going on. The bumblebee nest is under my stoop. Meanwhile, literally across the driveway under my neighbors garage, tin roof, a yellow jackets nest was disturbed by the summers workers finishing the rest of the house. (Climbed on the garage and got them pissed!!!) So now I'm a bit worried as it seemed one of the bumblebees got hurt. My son and i watched him for a good 15m. He eventually walked from his nest to cross the driveway near the yellow jacket nest (neighbors garage roof...) so now im freaking out a bit. The bumblebee kept under the stoop. But right near their nest is an opening (gap) where they could definitely enjoy easy access to my walls. Yikes

    The yellow jackets don't actually eat the bees. They don't eat meat at all... but their larva do.
    The yellow jackets bring the bee meat back to their nest and feed it to their larva. In return, the larva regurgitate a nutrient filled liquid that the adult wasps eat.

    I installed a wasp trap for the yellow jackets attacking my hive... 20 in one day. While spraying the little devils with RAID in front of the hive is fun, I don't have the time to do it every day.

    Exactly why I have wasp and yellow jacket traps store bought and home made on all sides of the house. We have yellow jackets, common red paper wasp, mud dobbers, bald faced Hornets, potter wasp and cicada killers. Pretty much all are pretty aggressive and will attack without being provoked. The traps I use contain fruit punch hard cat food and a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Red paper wasp love it. The other traps have can cat food and sugar with water. Attracts most of the others especially yellow jackets. With the combination of traps the population around my yard and house is safe and don't have to worry about surprise sting attacks.
