Our Bari Sax player in jazz band (in high school) was amazing. Took all the soloes she could get, and she killed it every single time.
I thought I was hot stuff cuz I was Mr. Clarinet. I thought I would steal the show when we performed "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". I don't mean to discount myself, since I believe I killed it. But, her solo made me realize I had a lot to (un)learn to become the musician I wanted to be.
Sax players are absolutely brilliant. Cheers to y'all from a 1st clarinet.

I know most people go for the other saxes but I absolutely love baritone and bass saxes ever since I listened to Colin Stetson's stuff. Just mesmerizing.
Colin played in a University of Michigan based funk band called The Bucket for a while. I used to catch them at The Blind Pig when I could. Then, he played in a group called Transmission. One of the guys who lived on my hall in my dorm played bass in that group. I'm a bari player. I love the sound. Colin's amazing.

Look up Leo Pellegrino. He incorporates sounds like that often in his songs (he is a bari sax player) and is very good. He not too long ago played an amazing rendition of Charles Mingus's Moanin.

I've used a bass saxophone but we don't use it during marching season there is just no parts for it
I marched it last year. Honestly no point in it when you have 4 sousaphones and a electric bass lol.
I have a friend who played bari sax during our 8th grade year in concert and jazz band. He now plays tenor sax for high school concert and marching band. However, every time we are at a competition, we see how many bari sax the band that is currently playing has.

I always loved the use of a Baritone sax in SOUL,and BLUES ROCK,music... It just brings out the "Feeling" in ballads......

+Sid Boyer Correction, a normal tone is considered below altissimo, and above pedal notes (not very possible on the saxophone), altissimo is not a normal tome, it is a higher tone than normal. The normal tones on a baritone sax range from a low A, up to a high F. And he played a B natural, which is a tritone above the highest normal tone (F). So no, that note is not a normal tone, it is an altissimo tone.
I like this better than the original... It prompted me to learn it on my bari, and it's a conversation piece!
