Dam Square is actually the place where Amsterdam began, all those hundreds of years ago. So it’s the heart of the city. The Royal Palace was built as Amsterdam City Hall in 1665, and it’s one of the most important buildings from that era. When it was opened it was the largest public building in the world, and it was one of the centers of power, when the Dutch ruled the waves in the 17th century. Dam Square was also the site of the worlds first stock exchange in 1602. And it serves as the place where our current heads of state (king or queen) get inaugurated in the Nieuwe Kerk(New Church).

Hi! Some corrections here. Its actually MoCo Museum, not MoKo. I'd skip that one to be honest, its a bit of a tourist trap. Next door is the Stedelijk Museum and thats the main modern art museum of the city, featuring works from Chagall, Picasso, Mondriaan and Koons amongst many others. It has been completely renovated and it has a new main entrance in the shape of a giant bathtub... Secondly, its not the "Rex Museum" (lol wtf?) but Rijksmuseum meaning Statemuseum more or less. Not trying to be an insufferable know-it-all, just trying to be helpful. :D
Best tip I could give any visitor is to just rent a bike, yes even when it rains, just get a poncho. The city is made for cycling and its a great way to see a lot in a short time and cycling will easily allow you to go and explore beyond the tourist centre and see more of the real Amsterdam.
A great way to do this is to take one of the free ferry's behind Central Station. My favorite one is to the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam North. The huge warehouses over there are now occupied by artists who use them as their studios. Very interesting neighborhood with all these old industrial buildings and harbour equipment like cranes, all brought to life with new modern art. Great way to spend half a day when you are on a budget because both the ferry and the NDSM art areas are completely free. And its not something everybody does when they visit Amsterdam, so youll have a more unique experience to share with your friends.
