Gojo is not the last of the Gojo Clan. He's a "one man team" in that he's the head of the clan and the only user of 6 eyes and limitless so he's the one with all of the power and influence. I think that Mechamaru is totally aware that he is dead, and is conscious using that thing and almost like talking or existing beyond his death is temporary, or like using his remaining curse energy imbued to these puppets he left. Probably the reason why Mahito realized that Mechamaru's nearby because it only took time to activate itself when Gojo was officially sealed.
Basically, the Mechamaru we have now is him but simply using the remaining energy he has, as he planned. Knowing he conserved curse energy for years as seen in his fight against Mahito where he use the energy he conserved, we can say that this things will only be effective/active upon Mechamaru's will, yet by the time the energy is out it's useless.

Based on irl feelings, I would think that the Ocean curse would be significantly stronger than the other curses. Based on that, they should be 3rd strongest in the show in terms of cursed energy levels, behind Gojo and Sukuna. I hope I'm wrong, but don't tell me whether I'm right or not. I do find it interesting that they've been hard sidelined this whole time though, hopefully the anime will reveal soon
