I have no interest in getting into trucking, but I can’t stop watching these videos. This whole trucking thing is an art form; I’ll make sure sure to give you truckers a respectful nod when I see you on the freeways.
I like fact Junior takes it nice and easy... he teaching the proper way. I am sure if Junior wanted to he knows how to hall ass down that hell no problem and control the truck, but he is trying to teach and show its okay to go nice and slow, don't rush when you're new. Dude is outstanding teacher, Prime is lucky to have him.
Junior Honduras I have been watching since early 2016. I decided this year to enroll in driving school. I graduated this week and test next week then off with a trainer. This video was played by our instructor which I saw when you originally uploaded it. The instructor explained the reason for showing the video for us to observe how it's done, he then said in this field you will bond with people. He told the story of Rodney. The class was moved. Thank you for doing what you do and inspiring me to embark on a new career. I hope to catch you on the road one day to shake your hand..... sending love from Houston Texas.
Wow...that is awesome and I really appreciate you watching. Tell the instructor I said thanks for playing my videos. I wish you the best on your journey and yes Rodney is missed very much 😔
know this. When going down a 6% grade, 6th-7th gear is where you want it with the jake brakes on. Having low RPM going down this hill is bad. Higher the RPM (NOT PAST 1500 RPM). The higher the RPM, the more the oil pressure. Jake Brakes work off oil pressure, more oil pressure the better the Jake brakes will hold back and work properly. This is loaded heavy. (Hot brakes = No brakes). This is how trucks catch fire. They lose their brakes cus they used them too much and not using the proper stabbing motion. (slow the truck to posted speed, stab the brakes firmly till speed is 5 mph lower than posted heavy truck speed, once the truck reaches the posted speed, repeat the break stab back to 5 mph lower than posted speed limit for trucks. Most trucks catch fire due to failure safety procedures. They hold the brake and when they noticed that their brakes are slowly not working, they hold the brakes down trying to stop and they wont. If you some how make it to the bottom of the grade and your brakes are smoking, DO NOT STOP, keep rolling and get them brakes cooled or call the fire department to meet you a few miles up the road that way they are there when you get there and the load will be protected from a fire. Drivers make the mistake of seeing the brakes smoking and they stop thinking its gonna make the brakes cool, That is false. the wind is what cools the brakes, if you keep moving, all the brakes will do is smoke, you stop, the wind stops and the brake will produce more heat and tires will adsorb the heat and will burst into flames. REMEMBER THIS.
I want to say to all truckers out there I respect y'all as a trucker myself I see y'all out there I'm currently in California kinda got myself in this situation. Now I learned my lesson to not ever ever use cbd oil for pain or whatever . Now I'm paying the price by taking education classes with SAP well the time almost comes for me to take the class and I am happy to say that everytime I see y'all out there just now I'm there to help out by backing if I ever see someone struggling . California has some tight spaces. Thank you for the video once again
That’s very true my cdl school just made sure I didn’t touch any curbs, cross any lines or speed they never even mentioned hills found out about hills once I started driving with my trainer in San Diego at night while raining lol…hope it’s going well for you
Tbh, it’s not really a CDL schools job to spend a whole lot of time on steep grades, especially if they are in a state that doesn’t have much of them. That’s why the company you go to work for has that orientation/drive with a trainer. If they are going to send you through the mountains, they need to train you on them.
This reminds me of my question to a school representative about putting off school until I could take advantage of winter training. They aren't to keen on the idea of endangering their instructors or equipment with rookies behind the wheel in knowingly dangerous situations. What I got out of it is they'd rather take the safe route for themselves and let rookies learn on their own, in time.
Thanks Junior, I’m currently in my tnt phase but I know there is a lot I’m not being taught by my trainer. Almost every experience feels like sink or swim. He’s a great guy but just not as passionate and involved as you are when preparing students for the challenges of this job. Grateful that I was aware of your videos before I started and can refer to them when I need to. It’s obvious you put your heart into what you do and it’s not just a paycheck. Thank you!
+Ron B 😎 I appreciate that and thank you 👍Also thanks for watching. I am sorry to hear that you are going through that and wish I could do something about this situation but I cant. Do your best and learn as much as you can. I will continue to make videos with the smaller details that many people don't pay attention to that could possibly help you and a lot of people out here.
+BIG MIKE Thank you very much and I am glad I was able to show you a little something. You are absolutely right we always learning something new. You be safe as well and be careful out there 👍👍
Great instruction...... I watched a news report where a trucker going to fast down hill crashed killing someone and now is being charged with Vehicular Homicide. Thanks Junior
patient, patient..... I love that you don't pay attention to other truckers who fly by you, and their loads could be light or so, but who cares, you watch after yourself, what is safe for you, your comfy zone.
I've taught students on that same hill. Seen more than a few "Pro" drivers smoking their brakes down that hill. I do keep my CB on though. I have no trouble ignoring idiots who wanna talk trash (they generally don't) but I like having it on in case someone wants to tell me something I don't notice (ie; problems with the rear of my trailer, traffic jam around a bend, etc.).
I think this was a very good representation on what to do... dont want to be o n the breaks hardly at all...stab a little but shouldn't hardly touch the breaks at all going down the hill...good job sir
Good video man. Very informative. I'm in truck driving school right now and we talked about this but now that I see how you use the engine brake it makes more sense. Thanks for the video.
What I learned from you in this video is downshifting going down hill normally I leave it in a gear that holds it slow the whole way. But you worked it more smoothly.
Thanks for this knowledge my man! I'm taking my class in November and wanted to see a visual on how to do this. Don't want to overheat those brakes and have something bad happen. Thanks my dude! Good stuff
Excellent driving Junior. I always loved trucking sims as a kid, Hard Truck 2 and 18 wheels of steel were my favorites. Never did became a trucker though.
I'm guessing you're 34 years old right now. It's not too late. I'm 34 and just got my CDL. Just went down my first mountain yesterday and almost crapped my pants.
I just finished a run from NYC to N. Cali. I did the I-80 Donner Pass route, moved a family member. No engine brake and a automatic 7 speed. Just wish I had the Freightliner I used to drive. Thanks or the video, new as well as longtime drivers could from time to time use videos like this.
Junior one more thing, a video like this would be even better if you had a second camera watching what your feet/gear shifter hand are doing, then you could play the video side by side
I went down that mountain a couple of months ago. It was a piece of cake. Ran down it with 42000 lbs on and used 8th gear. Ran down it about 1500 to 1800 rpms. Never used the brake but twice. I do have a 3 stage jake and I was smart enough to stop at the top like you are supposed to.
lots of different dynamics go into these grades, but you go down however you feel comfortable within reason so to speak... a driver has got to know his or her limitations.
Thanks for the help with the exact location , I moved to Salt Lake on 1 November 2015 and all I know is it was in the Wasatch Mountains , so was that I - 80 ?
Phenomenal video! I hold a Class-A and don’t go down any steep grades like 6% but it’s always good to know. I did do contract work this last summer to North Carolina and I went through the West Virginia turnpike. I was driving a straight-truck but still that was an experience. I definitely was doing stab braking but I was letting it rip down those hills. I wouldn’t be doing that with a combination lol
Jr Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Currently going through TNT @ Prime. Had to get off my first truck as I hardly ever felt safe doing anything I was doing behind the wheel. Pretty much being let loose to figure this all out for myself, and when I do wrong comes the "teaching" I actually went down this very same mountain on my first week on his truck at night alone upfront and having no clue about how exactly to manage speed or the operation of an engine break... I'm finding your videos very helpful insightful & educational. Thank you.
great video Junior having that commanding view on your video makes me feel like I'm driving and I also learned , looking at that the way you explain things and the way you make a tutorial as you're driving Makes Me Wanna get up and start driving a rig and have instructor like you I know i would be in good hands keep it up Godspeed to you sir
Yes it is beautiful and can be dangerous as well. I am showing you guys how to do it safely and with this way you can do it multiple times. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Thank You Man, for explanation I'm about to start my CDL career and this is important to me to learn as much info as needed to operate safely .. Safe travels and hope to meet you in future.
Look at this a school bus...Bump it...I'm going.....LMAO..Good job junior. Mark Prono here, I live on Raton Pass in Colorado, kinda like that one but 6% all the way down and more twisties. I can let my car idle down and it gets up to 85 MPH. I-25 CO/NM Border. I live at exit 6. Have you ever been over that one? I don't think I told you this but I was a Colorado Port of Entry Officer for two years at the first port in northbound on I-25 in Colorado.
The one good thing about learning way back when in ca is that there is a mountain anyway you want out. After the second time going over them it was easy mode
What? Yes they are, the noise ordinance starts at the bottom of the hill on the west side because by that point you shouldn't need them. I take this route twice a week
Nice video Junior, I remember that I80 stretch very well when I was training over the road about 6 years ago. And it scared the shit out of me!!!!! But I would really like to see you do a video of a decent on a 6 or 7 percent downgrade in the snow, in the worst possible weather conditions. NOT to see you in any danger, but to show everyone how it's done. Because you and I know we can't use that engine brake in the snow, and every OTR driver has to deal with that eventually. PLEASE, use the same head camera you did in this video, but only record it on the worst possible day for a snowstorm downhill decent. You know the day will come eventually, and that was the scariest damn thing I ever did. If you film it right, you'll probably get the most views of any of your RUclips videos. Just a thought. Stay safe out there man, you got balls of steel staying OTR. I couldn't take it anymore after 2 years. I'm local now.
Junior, good video, excellent driving. Well said, you have control of the vehicle.. like Captain on a ship...and your humor with Rodney B. By the way.. I think, you would make an excellent aircraft pilot. Peace.
I'am going to be a fledging truck driver. The only thing that scares the piss out of me is steep downgrade hills like in this video. The urge to ride the brakes is the worst. This week i'm getting my DOT physical done and my permit. I'll be driving with Schneider trucking hopefully.
I have been watching these videos and I really like Junior as a trainer he is tough and no nonsense..I am getting ready to start my truck driving career just have to decide if I want to go to Prime or CRST...
+RebelBubba Vlogs hey my apologies fornnot getting back to you any sooner. Send me an email at Honduras81@live.com and I will send you information on primes training program. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
+Bill H wow I don't think I have been over that road or Mountain during the summer or winter. If I have I am not aware of it because as you may know I don't know my name's to the mountains I go over. Unless I see a big sign posted saying so-and-so Summit, lol. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Junior you should drive with the engine brake on at all times. Any good driver can change gears with the Jake on. If you need lessons come to me and I'll get you changing them gears with the engine brake on all the time. The engine brake is your friend, it is meant to add braking power to help you stop the truck at all times.
+Richard Harms Yes you are right and its not good because at that point the RPMs are so high its hard to catch it in gear. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
I'm fairly new to artic driving hear in the UK, the roads are a lot different over hear but still some great info on safe careful driving. thanks for making some great videos
One of my customers who is an older, retired trucker told me the best way to go down a mountain is to keep constant pressure on the brake and that way they wouldn't heat up. He said going down a mountain the way the CDL manual recommend was wrong
Your customer has shit for brains. That’s the exact formula for getting brakes to fail. Going down hill with 80,000 lbs, any amount of pressure on the brakes is going to cause them to heat up. As they heat, they expand; as they expand, you’ll need to apply more pressure. More pressure more heat, until the brakes fail. Stabbing the brakes gives them a chance to cool down.
My trainer didn’t drive into any mountain 🏔 and we were 2 students we basically drive all the time but I remember driving for almost 4 hours in the Rocky Mountain Colorado and the truck was over heat and smoke. I was so scared cause it was my first time seeing something like that. I was watching this video before that I could have an idea of how to do it. Thanks for sharing
Every grade I ever go down, I never have to touch the brakes. I pick a speed, and cycle between the stages on the engine brake. I can keep it within 1-2 mph of the speed I decided on. Works fantastic, if you have a two or three stage engine brake.
@@betogarcia9823 I’ve used that method in an I terms too Al, and also 2018, 2020, and 2021 Freightliner. All with three stage engine brake. Start off on stage one, if you pick up speed, switch to stage two, and if needed stage three. Then if it slows too much, switch it back down to one or two. Keep cycling between stages of engine brake to maintain whatever speed you are shooting for. Works great.
Thanks for sharing I'm about to start truck driving school and after seeing the young man being sentenced to a 110 yrs I want to make sure I am trained properly 🤔
It's Twin Peaks of Mt. Timpanogos Range. Bunch of crazy speeders. Just an FYI in some states it is against the law to run with your flashers on unless it is for a true emergency.
Im in school now..my instructor says whatever gear it took to go up the grade you drop down one more gear when you get to the top...kick on your jake breaks and DONT take that truck out of gear until your rolling flat again..or..(southern accent)..that thing will take off like a rocket down that mountain and you wont be nothing but a greasy spot on the road...lol
+Richard McMahan You most definitely have to do your research as to what company because everyone is different. Example: Prime may suit your needs but not the other person. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
The other question I have is how come some people don't even know about using decent control which consists of using 1, 2, 3 stab brake . Then jake brake to where you think you need to be. Be in like 9 or 8 gear. 10 a little high. Then set cruise control that automatically puts cruise control now when I was taught this nobody know what I talk about . Atleast some trainers I went with. I had a good trainer with CR England who taught me that . My other co worker I checked to see how she was doing and she didn't know what decent was. I always want to make sure my rpms isn't over 22
Dude ur such a great teacher n patient as cn b ... N some things ur sayin I alrdy tld myslf... I plan on going 2 prime n Nov 2020 ( nxt month).. Wats ur referral code I'll b gladly use u as a referral I learn alot frm ur vids
And for these empty or light weight guys who are experts who fly down the mountain free fall you should have some regard to a slow moving vehicle with his proper light flashing in the correct lane. Cause as 2 million mile driver I'm always gonna take the slow man rout down a very serious mountain like in Denver and 8 out of San Diego
The higher your RPMs the more engine breaking force you have. Don't be afraid to let the RPMs get up into the 1800-2000 range. That's where the truck will hold the speed without having to stab the brakes so much. Also 25 mph in a 40 mph truck zone looks very unsafe.
great video and helpful tips . the funny thing is that i was just here the other day driving this in the dark for my first time solo i seen even other truck passing me up i thought they was crazy or they really had to use the bathroom lol . my trainer always told me its your world you do what you need to do to get home safe . its dont matter what the DM or the COSTUMER wants there not driving you are!!! keep it rolling ... i dont know if its ok to ask but i believe that i met you before when i was a WIL-TRAINS have you worked there at one time ?
+Trucker Steve That is true, you are the captain of the ship and your life is priceless. Nothing in the truck or trailer is worth your safety or life. I have not worked at Wil-Trans, you got me thinking now. Somebody else out there looks like me. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍

Rodney had a death grip on that door handle😂😂 I can't blame him.. I've been driving 5 years and still don't like steep grades
21 finger grip.🤣🤣🤣👍
For those people flying by you...like you said..."hey more power to them". Thanks for driving with sense my friend!
better safe than sorry.hold the Jake the whole way down and use your four ways. don't cater to other drivers. your the one with the CDL
So true Hold those JB's with your 4 way flashers on going down 6% mountains

They don’t really. You learn all that with the mentor
I usually just put my four ways on and just let the engine brake do most of the work and keep my foot away from the service brake

+Ross Dickens Thak you very much and thanks for watching 👍Yes we may come across and if we do don't hesitate to say "what's up"
Good video. Just got my CDL in Colorado. We’ve got some mountains here and I’d rather go slow steady and safe.
Went down my first mountain. Mount eagle. It's super easy. Just activate your engine brake and be on 7th gear, and it's a smooth sailing down.
+Richard Figueroa Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Richard Figueroa monteaglebwas my first mountain too!
My God, what a beautiful area. LOVE IT
Yes it is beautiful and can be dangerous as well. I am showing you guys how to do it safely and with this way you can do it multiple times. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Thank You Man, for explanation I'm about to start my CDL career and this is important to me to learn as much info as needed to operate safely .. Safe travels and hope to meet you in future.
awesome video, one of the best video of mountain downshift i have ever seen, clear
+Jose Peralta Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Y soy Catracho , quien dijo Miedo, thats how i want my truck to look like Jr.....
+Jose Peralta Si verdad. Gracias mi hermano y quien dijo miedo papa, gracias por ver los videos 👍
+Mark Blake I have been over that way but it's been a minute. Port of Entry officer 😐 interesting 😉😃
The one good thing about learning way back when in ca is that there is a mountain anyway you want out. After the second time going over them it was easy mode
Thanks for showing us how to shift down hill. I forgot how to do it. Been longtime since i drove a semi- tractor
Amazing patience and skill. Nice job bro
Yo junior I like to see someone speak slang or ghetto the homie talk lol and still doing shit right like a real man good shit bro!
Heading west. right after Park City, this is Parley's Canyon - AND - engine brakes are not allowed.
+OhItsJustThom Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
What? Yes they are, the noise ordinance starts at the bottom of the hill on the west side because by that point you shouldn't need them. I take this route twice a week
The goal is to.not just get down the grade. It's to get down the grade safely, with your brakes still functioning.
It's not a damn race.
I love cascadias! I might even get married to mine! Love the videos bro drive safe :)
Thanks for this videos Catracho. I try to get my CDL. N u give us good n important info.
+hugo orantes 😎 I appreciate that and thank you 👍Also thanks for watching
Great video, your videos are helping a lot of people out.
+Greenriver Utah Thank you and I'm glad they are. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
IMHO.. There is no comparison between the two. Prime is head and shoulders above CRST. I liken it to Major league baseball and T-Ball. Go with Prime.
+Mark Blake 👍👍
I think the worst grade I've been on was in Colorado US 50, Monarch Pass 7% grade in winter conditions with chains. Hair raising to say the least.
I have a strong feeling that was my brother in the CRST truck lol
+Lambochaser lol, Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
well done , it is better to be safe than just speeding up, great job, thanks.
Seen a lot of those tankers flying down that hill, wow just wow
+Richard Duran Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Junior you should drive with the engine brake on at all times. Any good driver can change gears with the Jake on. If you need lessons come to me and I'll get you changing them gears with the engine brake on all the time. The engine brake is your friend, it is meant to add braking power to help you stop the truck at all times.
Great video as always, you are the best trainer i have seen.
+BIG JONES Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
junior great video as always safety first most important thing
I
+Matthew Brugger Thank you very much and thanks for watching 👍
Very good tips. Everyone should take this very sireously.
I kind if thought you did not want to down shift while going down hill. Its good how you include those camera shots of the mirrors.
+Matt Gibson Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
One of my customers who is an older, retired trucker told me the best way to go down a mountain is to keep constant pressure on the brake and that way they wouldn't heat up. He said going down a mountain the way the CDL manual recommend was wrong
Absolutely not. Constant pressure means constant heat if you continue moving.
Worse I been down so far was in Utah think it was called rattlesnake pass. Tight, winding, 8 percent for 12 mi.
+Yosamitty Sam Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Had to do this just now going east on I70 in Utah. There was one hell of a grade there along with sharp turns.
Good stuff!!! On my 8th day of training was on I 81 hills in va wv area not like that. But was alot to me being a rookie
Every grade I ever go down, I never have to touch the brakes. I pick a speed, and cycle between the stages on the engine brake. I can keep it within 1-2 mph of the speed I decided on.
Works fantastic, if you have a two or three stage engine brake.
i constantly have to hit the breaks. im driving a freightliner automatic. any advice?
@@betogarcia9823
I’ve used that method in an I terms too Al, and also 2018, 2020, and 2021 Freightliner.
All with three stage engine brake.
Start off on stage one, if you pick up speed, switch to stage two, and if needed stage three. Then if it slows too much, switch it back down to one or two.
Keep cycling between stages of engine brake to maintain whatever speed you are shooting for.
Works great.
Awesome video 1 of the best video I see so far
Thanks for sharing I'm about to start truck driving school and after seeing the young man being sentenced to a 110 yrs I want to make sure I am trained properly 🤔
Yes amd thank you for watching 👍🏽
A few years ago there were 2 Swift trucks in the Same Run Off on the Bullhead City road. The Smoke was terrible but funny at the same time.
It's Twin Peaks of Mt. Timpanogos Range. Bunch of crazy speeders. Just an FYI in some states it is against the law to run with your flashers on unless it is for a true emergency.
RIP Rodney 🙏.
Great video 🙏.
Yup once you attempt to change gears going downhill you will never catch and will be basically a giant hot wheels cars
The east side of the Salt Lake Valley has the Wasatch Mountains , so what you were going down was probably the Wasatch Mountains
i want to go to truck school looking for the best place.. nice video
+Richard McMahan You most definitely have to do your research as to what company because everyone is different. Example: Prime may suit your needs but not the other person. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Thank you, your a awesome trainer. Good advice, I would trust you with my life.
I always want to make sure my rpms isn't over 22
Better to be safe than sorry. Nice work man.
also as a new driver the engine brake can screw u up shifting up and down but I have enough experience that I Jake shift and float gears
+Jonathon Brewster ohh okay. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
Great video Jr. Can u do a video of coupling & uncoupling?
-sauludos
+Saul Cruz Dele yo hago un video así como me lo pidió. Gracias 👍
Dude ur such a great teacher n patient as cn b ... N some things ur sayin I alrdy tld myslf... I plan on going 2 prime n Nov 2020 ( nxt month).. Wats ur referral code I'll b gladly use u as a referral I learn alot frm ur vids
Man those trucks passing were flying
I hope when I get to prime I get you as my trainer.
Okay I just got the answer at 12:25. Thanks for the great video!!
+Randall I appreciate that and thank you 👍
The higher your RPMs the more engine breaking force you have. Don't be afraid to let the RPMs get up into the 1800-2000 range. That's where the truck will hold the speed without having to stab the brakes so much. Also 25 mph in a 40 mph truck zone looks very unsafe.
I really have a respect about those trucker that fly downhill at 75 or 85 ..man I keep it under 55 don't care who's coming behind me
Tire marks going over the cliff at 10:52 someone died...
Perhaps. But it doesn't look that far of a drop. More like a steep slope or something. But then again the speed might make the difference.
great video and helpful tips . the funny thing is that i was just here the other day driving this in the dark for my first time solo i seen even other truck passing me up i thought they was crazy or they really had to use the bathroom lol . my trainer always told me its your world you do what you need to do to get home safe . its dont matter what the DM or the COSTUMER wants there not driving you are!!! keep it rolling ... i dont know if its ok to ask but i believe that i met you before when i was a WIL-TRAINS have you worked there at one time ?
+Trucker Steve That is true, you are the captain of the ship and your life is priceless. Nothing in the truck or trailer is worth your safety or life. I have not worked at Wil-Trans, you got me thinking now. Somebody else out there looks like me. Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
this is why you give trucks as much space as possible.
