    Why is it required to have 3 crew?

      It's because an upbound transit is a bit more turbulent due to the rushing water into the lock. Going from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario is downtown and it is less turbulent going down in the locks. Therefore the Canal requires three people on the boat. Typically one is at the helm and one at the bow and another on the stern. 😃
