Use earbud replacement covers on any screw that hits the arm. Also with your thread stand, you might want to put thread spool on one of the uprights at the bottom of the holder for better feeding. The mustiness in your case is between the wood outside and the waterproof liner.
I love the little mouse you received as a gift! Such wonderful people.
For your mushroom tree, I think a white painted twig tree would work year round. You are really getting a bunch of them and some are not tiny.
If you’re still willing to try getting the smell out of the case, try kitty litter. It’s what we use at the library when someone donates a particularly stinky book. Put some in, close it up, and let it sit for a few days.
I thought about that, too, but didn't comment as I felt someone would anyway. I didn't read all the comments, but my first thought was baking soda.
I used a combination of kitty litter and coffee beans … added a little aromatherapy 😊
@@linvallier2269 Oooooh coffee beans!!! What a great idea 😊😊
Howard Feed & Wax will rehydrate the case and eliminate the smell from the dried out hide glue.
You can put a bumper - clear sticky backed dot, used on the back of picture frames - on the faceplate screw to protect the bed finish.
I put my opened, Featherweight case and trays out in the sunshine, on my hot tub. The sunshine and fresh air took away the musty smell.
i tried that, it didn't work on this one
Good afternoon
Regarding your featherweight case, my husband told me the smell may be coming from the oil in our machines . He was a tool and die maker and knows a thing or two about oil and machines! Also, I've been told it's from the glue they used to attach the fabric to the case. The glue is supposably made from horse fat or bone marrow! You remember the old saying about horses being taken to the glue factory when they got old. Nasty right. So, if anyone has had their cases refurbished and had the smell come back, please chime in with some feedback!.
Hi Pat!!! I'm sure you know, you can buy a plate with measured markings on it for your sewing machine. Barb
I am finding this lots of fun. I am 73 years young and the first machine I sew on was a singer treadle machine that was my dads. When you sew on old machines all the time these are things that come naturally to me.
OdorBan is a great spray product that is used to deal with smells from all manner of sources... A heavy spray down with that and then dry out on a sunny day may be worth a try. If you were my neighbor, I'd bring the bottle over for you to borrow! Thanks for the inspiration! My featherweight was my grandmother's and was produced the month that my oldest cousin was born. I also have the 1968 Singer that she bought when the last two of us were born. It's awesome to have the machines she got to make things for us starting in 1955!
such great memories!! I have a few things i'll try, thanks for the tip!
IT's so cut I think I'll make one too .
Hi Pat, the bag is darling. I have heard that if you put a musty book in the microwave it will take the smell out. Thanks for sharing
I’m getting back my Janome M7 Professional sewing machine back from getting fixed tonight!! Been using a small Brother, which sews fine but so much smaller.
Your Contessa is a few months older than me. I will be 77 on January 1, 2024. Merry Christmas and happy New Year, Pat!.
Happy Birthday to you! The Duchess is a grand lady, 77 is a good time!
Have you tried crumpling newspaper up and putting it in the featherweight case to get rid of the smell? That’s a suggestion they used to make for Tupperware that got “smells” in it, and it would work!!!
i did dryer sheets for months, sitting outside in the sun. I think it needs more help
I just read that Rosemary essence oil with water will clean mold. Maybe try rosemary in the inside.
I put a stick-on dot of clear rubber on the screw of my featherweight in order not to scratch the paint.
Charcoal also helps absorb odors, as does baking soda.
Check out sew steady, they have a table for the Featherweight 🥰
thanks!!
Love the bag!! 😍
Pat- in my research about featherweights, the glue used in the case is what smells!
I just put my spool on the thread feeder stand
You might try newspapers wadded up in it.
Pat, have you tried putting a box of baking soda in the case? You could also dump the box of baking soda into the case, close the top, and leave it for a week or so. Good luck.
Suzanne
yes i did, no change, also dryer sheets and sunshine, no change
My local fearherweight lady told me the smell is from the horse glue they used back in the day. ?!?! I've tried many of the things you mentioned to no avail. However mine accidentally got a mist of rain once when I forgot it was outside and that did help a bit. Not recommending getting it wet by any means! I may try the kitty liter/coffee method next.
We had a refrigerator with an awful smell in the freezer. I read to wad up newspaper and sprinkle with essential oil, whatever flavor you desire. I used lavender. Put it in the freezer for a couple of days and, success! My freezer has never smelled better.
This is worth a try for your case.
Good luck! 🎄🫶
I think the smell is from the old hide glue used in the manufacture. The spray from the Featherweight Shop worked well but needed several applications and sitting in the sun after spraying helped a lot. But I don’t think you can completely get rid of it without removing the paper and glue from the inside.
I have had a featherweight for years. Use it for travel/group gatherings. Regarding the 2 holes on the base near your decal...I have inadvertently lost pins down there. I cover mine with washi tape. Also, the feed dogs don't pull fabric evenly, hold on to your pieces when sewing.
Have an old sewing machine I didn't even know about, lol
I ordered a table for my two Featherweights from Sew Steady. They work great and give you a lot of workroom. Love my Janome, but my Featherweights are so cool. I also have a Singer 301 in the original table ❤ I did learn from you today about the thread stand, I’ve been using mine wrong, I didn’t realize you could just keep the thread on the machine and put the thread back to the holder, I was putting the thread on the holders on the bottom of the stand. Hoping this works. Thank you for this. I’ve used Featherweights for years and still learning.
That mouse is PRECIOUS!!!!! If there is a pattern, I hope she(you :) will share where to find that pattern!
So happy you showed your bag today, I was in the exact same spot, now motivated to finish mine today! :)
My 1st close look at the design Marie put on the Duchess...very pretty. Scarf pretty, you matched the quilt behind you 😊. I've made 8 of the same style of bags but instead of quilting I added a pocket in front for the card! Remember to brush your teeth after all those sweets Pat and Greg! 😂 Merry Christmas 🎄💞
I love your Duchess! I have had one for several years now. Her name is Lizzy. Because I was afraid to use the handle on the case because it is quite delicate, I bought from the Featherweight Shop, a canvass carrying bag to put it all in- case and all. Actually I just leave the case in the canvass bag(bubblegum pink!) so I am not likely to pick it up by the handle of the carrying case. The canvass bag is quite sturdy and it is easy to carry all of it inside that.
My Featherweight case smelled so bad I didn’t even want it in the room. From my research discovered it’s from the hide glue used to adhere the cloth covering. I used Howard’s Feed And Wax. Slathered it all over inside and out. Did about three coats. Smell is completely gone.
thanks! does that feel a residue?
@@PatSloan it didn’t on mine
Try spraying white vinegar in the sewing case.
thanks!
Have you tried news paper in you featherweight box to remove the mildew smell. Leave it inside and should clear it. Stuff it with the newspaper
i have done dryer sheets for months and sunshine. i think it needs a heavier solution
I so enjoy your videos. I feel like I’m having coffee with a friend, and learning stuff at the same time. Merry Christmas!!!!
thank you!
The crow bag came out so cute! I’m sure your friend will be thrilled with it.
Hi Pat, cut open an white union. Leave it in the case for a few days. Then a green apple. It will absorb some of the smell
Love the crow bag you made. The mouse is darling!
Thank you! 😊
I ordered a Sew Steady extension table for my featherweight. 😊
I love your thread holder. It’s so pretty.
For your featherweight case you might want to source some zeolite. It’s small rock pellets about the size of the tip of your thumb that absorbs odors and even better afterwards you can put them in sunlight outside to release the odors and reuse them as needed. It does a bang up job on musty smells.
I’ve done all of the things you mentioned to get rid of the smell. It has lessened but it isn’t gone. 🙄
Lori Holt carries a plastic that she puts on her machines to mark a 1/4 inch seam.
Thank you Pat for all you do!!! I'm so glad you got yourself that beautiful cup and ornament ❤
Good visiting the Sloan Zone today. Dutchess looks so good! See you online tomorrow 😊
Try using charcoal in the case, but make sure it doesn't have the lighter fluid in it. Thats what i used in mine. It may take a little time, but it did work for me.
thanks!
The pink crow bag turned out so cute! Your friend will be excited to receive it and the matching mug rug.
I got my Mom's old sewing machine this summer. I'm not sure how old it is but I remember seeing her sew on it as a kid, so maybe early/mid 1960's. You've inspired me to do some research on it and getting it cleaned up. The case sits down over the top of the machine and latches on the bottom. I don't trust the latches so I cradled it when I carried it into my home. It's very heavy so I don't think I'll be mailing it anywhere. I'll talk to my sewing machine specialist when I take my Janome in for annual maintenance in January.
You get so many beautiful and unusual cards, I would start saving the best ones in a folder! I collect old valentines, so I'm a collector at heart. Merry Christmas to you and Mr. Greg!
I often wonder what she does with all those cards!
My featherweight case smells a little musty, not real bad but when I asked my repairman how to remove the smell he said “oh no, that’s part of its history. He liked it.🤷♀️😁
If you make a deeper bucket bottom, don’t forget to raise your block higher on the bag. Ask me how I know…. I’ve been making pillowcases as gift bags but the drawstring bag will make a nice alternative. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas!
Pat , I use a piece of cotton batting over the end of my featherweight when I fold it up. Works great. I hope you purchased a new foot pedal for the featherweight as I could not function with that small knob on the pedal. They must have had small feet! 😅
Did that same thing at Thanksgiving Pat. I honestly thought I had another week. I got a ride awakening and had to make a quick adjustment. Holidays come up to fast
Lori Holt’s seams so easy seam guide will give a sewing guide line and also extend the bed of the machine. Bonus!
You drawstring g bag turned out so nice! I'm sure your friend is going to love it. I'm thinking about trying to make one for a last minute gift. Wish me luck!! Your little Duchess is so beautiful. I'm thinking about maybe getting my little girl done. Happy sewing today.
Put a bar of zest in your case for a week or so and then, after that, you need to keep dryer sheets in it for life! That will help!
Sprinkle a few spoons of sodium bicarbonate into the case. Leave the case in a dry
airy place it could help getting rid of the smell.
Love your crow bag you made, the print is amazing. Just in case this works, baking soda is suppose to absorb Oder. Worth a try, thanks for sharing for sewing projects. 👍❤️😊
I was told that the moldy smell in the case was not from the case itself being moldy but that the oil filter never being changed. Now that your machine has been cleaned and I'm sure that the filter has been changed and is new - you will find that your moldy smell with dissapate. This was my experience.
I have that same thread stand!!!
For the feather weight machine case & manual, you could try sprinkling in baking soda & closing it up in a bag for several days. Worth a try?
The bag is cute. I am going to make one for each of my family members to use as “stockings”. Things fall out of stockings when you take them somewhere, so hopefully this will be a fun alternative.
The Featherweight Shop has a thread guide that attaches to your machine fir that kind of thread.
i saw that, thanks!
Always such fun to learn new things! I saw you with that Fancy thread stand feeder a few years ago and purchased one. I just love it, especially as I seepw so much that I need to use the king cones of Aurifil thread (which don't fit on top of my machine. Thanks
Your bag looks fantastic! Instead of bags, I'm using the pattern to make quilted cushion covers. Today, I'm making the binding to get the 4 covers in progress completed. They look so cute 😍 If I had more time, I would have made them for everyone, lol. I also made a bunch of those no sew star ornaments for gifting.
Love the bag! Was going to make drawstring gift bags but had surgery on wrist. Maybe next year. 😊 So cute!
I am loving the bag. ..now I think I may have to make one....soon😊
I still have some of my Grandma’s old small wooden spools of thread. Probably brittle now and I shouldn’t use them. Just can’t part with them.
they would be so nice to put in a jar to decorate with
The bag turned out so cute.
Hi Pat . I wonder if you sprayed with the mold spray. We can get here in Ontario at Home Depot so maybe you can find at your Home Depot. Hopefully you can get that smell out. Fingers crossed
I am really enjoying your updates on the Dutchess! I don’t have one and do not plan on getting one at this point, but learning about them is fun. Keep us updated on how you fare with the case. Is it salvageable? There are things to be learned from that also.
What about baking soda and vinegar for the smell?
there are a bunch of options i'll have to try .. thanks!
Please let us know what eventually works or if nothing will work for the mustiness in the case. I checked the price for a reproduction case. Not too bag pricewise. In fact, they are on sale right now.
I had a featherweight case from 1937 that smelled horrible. I talked to a knowledgeable sales person at a quilt festival and I’ve used his recommendation, and it worked wonderfully to get the smell out of my case! The smell is from the horse glue that is breaking down, so use a good quality liquid, black shoe polish and coat the entire inside and outside of your case with it. I did that twice and the smell has gone. It seals the smell underneath the shoe polish and if it reoccurs, you can always reuse the liquid shoe polish. The smell has not returned in 5 years!!! I believe I used his recommended Kiwi brand liquid polish. On the thread topic, I bought a thread spool adjuster from the featherweight shop, which allows the Aurifil thread to lay horizontally, and then I didn’t need the thread stand.
thanks!!!
I'm not a pink person nor do I care much for birds, but your crow bag is so dang cute!
My Feather Weight case smells bad. I have tried everything, smells still. Might get a new case. I had to put it out in my garage.
Just curious-why do you have your thread on your machine and then running to the thread stand? It should be sitting on the thread stand. The featherweight store has a product to spray in the case for the odor.
I will try both ways and see how it works
Pretty thread stand. Is it tall enough so that your thread is now spooling off the top of the spool? Or maybe the thread can sit down on the stand vs on the Dutchess?
Can you explain the thread stand? I’ve never seen one before.
it lets the thread spool UP for this cross wound spool, which keeps the spool STILL so it is not banging from side to side. Try it on your machine. they are very common in sewing
@@PatSloan thank you so much for explaining. Now I get it. I’m going to try one.
Use kitty litter.
Maybe you could try baking soda.
Several times in this video you said there was two other videos that did all Sewing I watch Kendall but who is the other person?
Hi Kendall is one of her ambassadors that help her. He lives in Australia and help her alot. Merry Christmas
it is linked in the description box, sew lux
Do you like to eat mushrooms also?
yep! do you?
i'm so jealous of your plastic McDonald's straws. Ours, in Canada, are cardboard and feel so gross in your mouth and collapse when sucking up a milkshake. I've resorted to carrying around a stainless steel straw in my purse
