Girl! I have made fried squash too many times in my 46 years and I have always struggled to get crispy fried squash. A lot of times I just wind up making unbreaded fried squash with onions, but you might know that that’s more sautéed, I reckon. I am going to have to try this technique! By the way, I’m on the other end of the state from you down in Carteret County. I just found your channel last night and I love it! ❤️
Hello neighbor!! Just checked out your channel as well, we should definitely be friends, sounds like we are both 2 old souls 😊 thanks so much and just subbed to yours! ❤️
@@TrueGritAppalachianWays ❤️ Yes ma’am, old souls, indeed! I was thinking the same thing when I was watching some of your videos. You just seem exactly like my kind of people! 😁 I was fascinated with the frying collards video because I think that’s such a neat idea to just cook a small mess of them and fry them right up. We will definitely fry them, too, but that’s usually warming up leftovers. But it is some good eating either way! 😋 Do y’all do cornmeal dumplings out there? (I have a couple of videos on my channel about that if you don’t know what I’m talking about.) Hmm… 🤔 Maybe at some point we should do a collaboration… maybe different ways we do things in Eastern and Western North Carolina. I know barbecue immediately comes to mind but I reckon there are a number of things that we both do in traditional, but different ways, and then other things that we might do very similar. And thank you for the subscription! I subscribed to yours too, of course!
I put my cut up squash in bowl with buttermilk….let them sit a bit while my grease is getting hot…I put cornmeal mix..(already has a little flour in it) in a zip lock bag, put a little salt & pepper and onion powder into that mix…drop a few squash from the buttermilk into the bag…shake till coated…then put in hot grease..repeat till I have all my squash battered ….everyone has a little different way of doing things…I say whichever way works best for you….I don’t like my breading to be thick…Hope you have a good day! Brenda…..ps…..I’m living in Florida but grew up around Sandy Ridge & Madison, NC
Wow, nice to meet you! My husband prefers thick batter to thin so I started doing them this way and they were a hit! Thank you for sharing your method, I’m always looking to learn new ways, I’ll definitely be trying this!
Another way to test the grease in to just flick a speck of flour off your finger. If it sizzles, it’s hot enough. Not as dangerous as putting water in the hot grease and it doesn’t splash all over. Not criticizing just sharing info. I do my squash separately into egg bath and then into the flower and meal but I am definitely gonna try it this way. I also don’t use self rising flour so I will try that too with the soured milk. Looks like you make that pretty batter. thanks for the tips. Always like to try new ways 😁
Megan I've ve never seen that method, I think you have found it. Do you do your Fried Chicken the same or different? Would you demonstrate your way for Fried Chicken please?
I have never had good success with canning or freezing squash for frying, I try every couple of years but don’t much like the texture of either. So we usually just eat fried squash when we have fresh coming in
YOUR NOT ALONE I TO STRUGGLE. SO MY EARS ARE WIDE OPEN THANK YOU ❤
Hahaha Andy peeking in the window 😂😂
Thank you. I haven't tried this yet, but I thought you had to coat in egg, but those look great. :)
Looks so good Megan. Going to give that a try. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.

My mother always used a brown paper bag when she was frying anything. Those were the days before plastic bags.
Nice easy recipe. Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.

Honestly I'm not the best at frying chicken and am still trying to perfect it, this method works ok for chicken but not my favorite
How do you can squash for frying?

Siiiigh. I love your videos, but it hurt me to like this. Down with squash and broccoli!
And the whole squash came apart from the breading
I’m sorry to hear that happensd
