    • @mangoshake
      @mangoshake Год назад +9

      @@richardhaselwood9478the advantage of threaded BB isn't even that it doesn't have problems. Everyone admits that.
      The advantage is that a home mechanic can install and remove a threaded BB with just a BB wrench. No need for a giant bearing press that will take up room in the tool kit/room/shed and the installation isn't as technique-sensitive as press-fit.
      Both BB types bave their strengths and weaknesses. Threaded BB's are that much easier to service or replace.

      @@mangoshake You're broadly correct, but but there are waaaaaaaaay too many people that do say that threaded BB's are some pinnacle of mechanical perfection, but, that's a different topic....
      My issue is that, PF is simple, not that complex at all to service for home mechanics (with the right tools, which don't take up that much space). And more importantly, are a better option mechanically for carbon frames, as bonding an aluminium sleeve into carbon is a bad idea.

    Funny, long straights with tight turns at the end are why braking bumps exist. Braking bumps are usually caused by poor trail design. They are also caused by riders not knowing how to properly use the front brake to slow down quickly and instead do heavy rear braking and skidding.

      Ban gravel bikes. A view rides ago a gravel biker told me to turn around cause the forest path I was riding on would end in a 100 meters. Actually there was just a puddle of water going up to the middle of the upper thigh. Not much of a problem for my BMX-MTB-crossbreed. So don't ban gravel bikes obviously, but ban telling others what to do based on your bike experience and capabilities of your bike.

    Brake bumps (in the bike park) could be immensely reduced by two main measures. ABS brakes on rental bikes and (somehow) keeping people who aren't up to the task (going actual trail speed) off of trails above their pay grade.

    I agree with restricting new models every year, because the only reason for it is to make bike companies more money, as the only people that would get real advantage of it are the professionals and many of them aren't actually paying for, them or at least not in the same way normal people would that have a brand-personal loyalty because they like a rider. Gravel bikes have their use, they are good more long distance trail/road cycle tours but not impossible for short rough trail, they just have much less travel on the front and they're a hard tail.

      I suspect as the engineering design of bike manufacturer has become more intense, engineers with automotive background and experience have crossed over and have bought with them processes and ways of working into the industry. New MY's are common place in automotive for the same reason you mentioned- To keep the financial income stream on target. Given the life span of a bike though I find it very wasteful unless there has been major amendments to the design, past aesthetic changes. Nothing stopping them skipping MY though. As it should just be used as an identifier to version and not something to make people view the bike as obsolete or unfashionable.

    Ban propriety stuff. Pretty much everything that is not part of a frame should be in some kind of open standard (think UDH). Then everything that dones't have a good reason and is part of the frame should be part of a "standard set". So frame bearings, nuts, bolts, washers and bushings. No one should have to look thought internet archives to find out what bearing, bushing or nut they need because the manufacturer is no longer providing them and when they did it cost 10x the actual value.
    Ban not releasing cad/technical specifications of propriety stuff that actually makes sense that are property (frame-specific inserts eg. flip chips)

  • @ennokanScottwalker

    Why banning anything? There is no need for banning if really the great majority doesn´t agree with how it is - whatever it is.
    If noone buys bike year by year, then the industry will adjust the release cycle. If people are that unsecure with an older bike - sorry, all that matters are skills. Riders complaining about old bikes of other riders are suckers! And most often with a lack of skills. Have fun, have a ride with the bike you want to use. That´s all that matters.
    If noone wants to ride with moaning people, the moaning one has to ride on his own or stops moaning to join the others. I don´t care if my biking buddy rides with lycra or loose shirt & shorts. I don´t care about shaved legs. As long as we have a fun ride, no moaning and a beer or two afterwards, fine! If I don´t like the trail with a long fast stretch and a sudden 90 degree turn, then I don´t ride it. If a bike park offers such bad trails or weird northshore but people still ride there - there bad! The park will adjust if noone comes over to ride and spend some money! Btw. the really crazy and high northshore did disappear - because it was too crazy for most of the non pro riders. And there are still black, double black or pro lines in bike parks. Because there are really advanced riders with amazing skills. If you´re not advanced or pro these trails are dangerous, too!
    In my opinion you don´t need to ban anything (as long as you´re not the f***ing UCI). Just go with what you like and skip the stuff you´d bann. If most of the community does so, then it will disappear on it´s own. Otherwise it´s a problem noone else has ^^
