this scene really puts into perspective how young she is. she responds to aunt lydia in an almost petulant tone, and when she screams for her to leave and flails, it looks like she’s throwing a tantrum. because this is what she is: a little girl expected to fulfill an adult woman’s role.
As Lawrence said, Gilead doesn’t care about children, Gilead only cares about power. Because their whole ideology behind God and the rise of the birth rates is only a distraction cover for what they’re really trying to achieve: complete and total theocratic and authoritarian governance over everything and everyone.
As Lawrence said, “Gilead doesn’t care about children. Gilead cares about power.” Their whole ideology they’ve put in place for their society is really just a distraction from what they’re trying to really accomplish: a complete, total patriarchal and authoritarian regime that controls everything and everyone.
Her reaction is completely justified and understandable. She's a CHILD who was raped, molested, victimized by dozens of men, if not hundreds of men. She was forced to lose her childhood. She's been imprisoned since she was very young. She was most likely taken from her family like Hannah was from June and Luke. She was abused and violated by dozens of men, all of them much, much older than her. She's a victim of child marriage and now, she's pregnant with a baby she doesn't want that happened out of yet another disgusting rape by a man much, much older than her. Along, with that, she's now a sex slave who will eventually have her baby taken from her, that is if she or her child survives, as she herself is a child and her body is obviously not mature or grown enough to handle pregnancy (I'd be surprised if her baby even survives or if she survives.). Whether or not her child survives, she's stuck in a prison, unable to escape or break free, because of the metaphorical and actual chains binding her. And on top of it all, one of the many, many women who lets this happen to herself and thousands of other innocent women has the audacity to even attempt to apologize or comfort her.
Hell most adults would have cracked way before her. Anyone who tried to say that her reaction is immature aren't getting the bigger picture (although I haven't seen anyone say that). I hope her character isn't forgotten about in the final season.
I felt so bad for Esther. It's so disgusting what Gilead put that child through. Although it was mean how she treated Janine, I don't blame her for being a wrathful ticking time bomb who believed she suffered the most. If Esther ever got out there, I think the lack of understanding of how to help her, is the second saddest part.
I love this scene because it's one of many that really highlights how Aunt Lydia had justified and truly believed in her own twisted ways that this societal structure was the way to go. She's abusive for sure, but there's also a lot of grey area and nuance which is what this show does so well. In a messed up way, she does care about the women she's in charge of and i think this scene illustrates one of many moments where you see her faith in the system starting to unravel.
The doctor said the pregnancy was 3 weeks along, BUT pregnancy age is not started at conception (it varies and can happen same night or days after intercourse, and no way to know exactly when). Medically, the first day of a pregnancy is the date of the start of the mom’s last period - and a “3 week” pregnancy would actually only about 1 week after conception, likely barely visible. So, unless this is changed in Gilead, they have their date of conception wrong.
They think women are the sole blame for infertility. And the God ordained them and that’s why their commanders make babies, and if they don’t it’s the handmaid. Come on now. Medicine relies on logic and reason. This religious government takes what it believe is correct and throws the rest away. Like Republicans and religious zealots alike.
@@ladymondegreen There are stories that this has caused problems in real life, where dads who don’t know the odd way of dating pregnancy start and who travel a lot think “wait, I wasn’t even in town on day 1, how can it be my baby!” when this actually works out fine,

Despite how fucked up her beliefs are and how blind she is to the atrocities that the handmaids undergo I do truly think Aunt Lydia is sorry for what happened to Esther.
S5 has seen a lot of development for Lydia. She is slowly becoming more and more awake to how bad the handmaids have it and becoming less strict. When was the last time we saw her order one of her cruel punishments like forcing them to stay out in the rain, burning their hands, using her cattle prod? Even the scene where she doesn’t shout at the handmaids for singing “It’s A Hard Knock Life”. If I remember correctly, she’s the only character we’ve seen struggle with her faith in the scene by Janine’s bed side. I think the final season will see some breakthroughs for Lydia’s character.
No. This is a load of crap, similar to how they try to paint the main wife as redeemed despite being a hypocrite that breaks the rules she passes on to others, driving, threatening to kill a kid of another wife, disobeying her husband, reading...I would make some sense if they grew up in this society that you could say they were brainwashed and not to blame, but this is a case of justifying abuse. F**k that.
@@ramo._. Oh, sorry. Well bascially the woman knew that some men were r@p!ng girls, and the girl in the hospital bed was a victim. The girl in the hospital bed knew that the woman knew and wanted her out of her sight basically.
No she met June at her home when June and some marthas were hiding (?). Esther was actually a wife, and had killed her husband with poison. @@honeybadger1810 For starters, rape exists even in marriages. Also, even if this were long removed from the actual event, trauma runs deep and having to explain it can be like reliving it for a victim.

She thinks it's a holy ceremony and it's tough but it's tough luck. They have to do it.
