The fact that she is able to describe the horrific abuse thats happened to her, but is uncomfortable with saying "penis" shows how young she really is. She's just a child.
From the moment I first saw her in Designated Survivor (with Keifer Sutherland) I knew she's gonna go far in this business. Girl's got skill. And (at this moment in time) she's only 14 years old.
She seemed so proud of this performance and the message of activism - that this happens to girls all over the world. I was 15 yo when my grandmother started talking about arranged marriage. Thankfully I'm thousands of km away so they can't kidnap me, and my parents would never allow it. Ten years later, she's still asking about when I'm going to get married (I'm now a worthless spinster in her eyes - I should be home having babies). Also, 15/16 is when I started to get involved in activism. So good for this young actress that she has such a human view of the impact of this role.
this episode is a reminder for June for what's in store for Hannah if she doesn't get her out of Gilead. This is what the Serena Joy and Fred Waterford have set up for young girls, and why she won't stop until she gets Hannah out. Serena Joy was an adult when they started Gilead. These new wives are adolescent/ young teen girls being subjected to sexual assault.
This scene also goes to show that Esther Keys had never asked to become the wife of a Commander man who's far too old for her. Esther Keys was forced marry when she was 12, 13, or 14 years old. What was even worse is that poor Esther was abused and raped by her husband's guests. He allowed to abuse to happen to her. He didn't even protect her. So I was glad to see that Esther started to slowly poison him.
It was in these moments that I was reminded, after all the circumstances of her being a wife and what went on with Janine at the dining table, Mrs. Keyes is just a girl. A poor scared little child who was victimized, brutalized, and traumatized in a way that no child (or anyone) should ever be. Earlier, we sort of see her as a progressive yet domineering wife, but we are reminded of the child that she is, and that the evil of Gilead does not draw the line at child marriages. It's breath-stopping.
Esther sitting with her knees held to her chest vs June sitting cross legged emphasized their size, Esther being so much smaller because she is a child vs June being larger and the adult, and they are both equals in that they are both fully aware and have experienced the worst parts of humanity Gilead broke my heart
I remember seeing her in “I, Tonya”, filmed when she was around 9 or 10, and thinking “good lord, that kid is damn good at this”. I’m glad to see her genuine hard work and talent is getting her more prominent roles now!
McKenna might have been 13/14 while filming this, but she being a mrs in Gilead, smoking cigarettes and talking about rape & assault broke my heart for the child. Sometimes i think an older actor should've played a 13 year old for this sensitive role. And now she's a handmaid 😢 Edit: Eden had it better than Esther
, but it's realist till this day teenagers are focused to sleep with older men and have to endure physical and emotional abuse we are supposed to be uncomfortable
They want us to be uncomfortable, the drama shows things that happen in real life and that society pretends it doesn’t. They put light in real problems
they definitely need mental health professionals on set when these children preform roles as dark as this one, but it would defeat the purpose if she was visibly older than she was supposed to be because these things happen in real LIFE. They are actual children. It’s meant to make us feel disgusted. It was needed to have an actress that was the age of this character. it has more of a powerful impact on the audience.
Omg somehow I’ve seen Mckenna Grace so long ago I coudn’t believe it’s her but somehow I associated the actress with her and when I found out she plays this role I wasn’t suprised for a moment. Her performance is mind blowing. She’s going to be the one of the biggest actresses of the world.
"None of this is your fault...none of this." Only words another woman could give to another woman. If you know you know. There are a particular group of people such as displayed in this show that proves getting your ''rocks off'' at the expense of another person is f-cked up. Not to mention how seriously abused women were back in the day. Like I am not kidding, the marriage at 13 , 14 was not uncommon. Birthing children at 12, 13,14 was not uncommon. STILL happens in other parts of the world. Not to mention s-x trafficking. Something I love about this show is how it brings ''seemingly'' passed problems that are actually going on TODAY into light.
I'm only on the first episode (UK viewer) - something doesn't add up between Mrs Keyes and her old fogey husband. Either he's pretending to be half senile and not recognising his victim, or she is stretching the truth. But one of them is manipulating June.
@@nationalinstituteofcheese3012 she says that in the beginning he was using the drugs but then that didn’t work so he brought in other men. She was poisoning him to keep him weak.

@spikejonzelover420 The Radical Left Democratic Politicians are destroying our country and no doubt are involved human trafficking. Her husband couldn’t get her pregnant (still don’t know why. Couldn’t find anything about him being infertile) so he had eyes, guardians, and commanders rape her.

I'm honestly blown away with how demanding this performance must be for someone as young. Mckenna Grace really takes the stage here.

She’s an incredible actress
And she has been nominated for emmy😍🔥

I was kind of shocked they let her to this scene.

@Snake In The Grass I like Serena actually. She's an interesting character and adds a lot to the plot.

Well not really. In the Testaments she becomes an aunt and eventually gets out of Gilead (as a grown woman) and tells her side of the story
@@matejaem is that a spoiler or part of the book's plot?
McKenna just got nominated for an Emmy for this role today. I’m telling you, this girls absolutely amazing. So much talent at only 15 years old
She is very talented! sure she gonna take Oscar in the future😌🖤
I wonder what Sheldon's doing in the Texas Republic...
And, she killed it in Ghostbusters.

Mckenna Grace already has so much of an amazing career, I can’t wait to see her future roles as she gets older. She’s so talented!
