Truly a beautiful peice of wood and sheer artistry in the work. Now I'll be trying to find my own and see if I can match it. I can't help but wonder how it would look with clear rose colored resin in the openings.
Just Beautiful
Cheers Curtis 😉👍🏻
Tough looking piece of log to start with. You whipped into a beautiful piece. Love how the hoods, inclusions and design came together. Wonderful!

It’s a gift to look at a clog and see what’s within.
I am going to guess you meant to say log? I think the only thing within a clog is a foot 🦶 😉👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning 😃, I’m Scottish 😃and in Scotland they are actually known as cloggies” 😃🏴
Well I did not know that! I have Scottish lineage as well. I feel a little ashamed. 😂
@@JackMackWoodturning no I’m the one ashamed, I’ve burnt many a work of art in my fire… I’m really enjoying your art, I’m delighted with your finished pieces.

Jack that’s beautiful your a good craftsman, those openings would have looked good when done in resin, but they look good now!
The effort you put in to your work is astonishing. I would have been to scared to tackle that piece of wood. You truly are an artist. The grain is spectacular . Thank you for answering my question. It’s truly a gorgeous piece of work. Stay safe and will be waiting for your next video thanks

Looks great!! As much as I love all kinds of burl I've never heard a crotch called burl before.

Sorry dude I don’t follow you? What do you mean by “a crotch crotch called burl”?
Thanks for the 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning My bad I read it wrong. For some reason I thought it said burl Sorry I'll change my comment after you read this
Oh… I see you thought I’d said this was a burl ?? No problem, I miss read things all the time. 😆
It’s a crown.. in this case top of a grafted plum tree.
Glad you enjoyed it mate 😊👍🏻

Nice piece of crotch wood. Nicely turned

Please tell me what drill bit or forstner bit you use here to start the center hollowing. It looks very different from mine and seems more efficient, even allowing for the video speed. Thank you!

Fantastic work done on this piece the natural wood look is stunningly beautiful.
Thanks Kobie. 😊👍🏻
I would love to see what this would look like with some Blu pearl resin. :)
I wouldn’t. 😂
@@JackMackWoodturning
Lol
Probably a redundant question, but have you ever made a lamp out of your wood?
I have, there are videos of lamps on my channel
WOW Jack, simply stunning and no resin. The grain and colouring of the wood are beautiful, nice to see a pure turning without resin. The shape is classic, what are you going to use it for? Thanks for sharing
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it. This piece sold but I imagine it was used as a decorative item. Definitely no good for corn flakes
🏴👍
🤙🏻
The outside looks amazing but I'm not fond of the inside. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Not to worry. Thanks for the feedback Steven. Al least you liked half of it. 😁👍🏻
My favourite.. gnarley peices of wood! You dont get that figure in a straight blank from ebay etc
Amen to that Gav. It’s like treasure hunting! Thanks for watching man 👍🏻😁
Another beautiful piece, what would this sell for?
How much would you pay? 😁
£10,000
You don't show your finishing and end results or products .but the work is great
Hi Raymond. There are pictures of the final result. I’m not sure what you mean. The finish was Danish oil. Thanks for watching buddy 👍🏻😁
@@JackMackWoodturning ok now I know what the finish is because you told me still dont know what grits you use to get that beautiful finish I watch to learn . Thanks for replying
I don’t include all information in the video as they are not intended as tutorials, simply entertainment, but I’m always happy to answer any questions..
on this piece I sand from 240 up to 600 and then finish with danish oil.
Any other questions just let me know.
Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Gorgeous piece Jack! I’ve gotta say, when I saw you painting the inside I wasn’t real thrilled with it, but you proved me wrong! It looks amazing!
Curious, what was the MC when you started? Or do you even know?
- Seth
Hi Seth, thanks for the kind words. Iv made countless pieces like this over the years and find that when you really want to show off the beautiful grain on the outside of a vessel it’s often best to make sure there is high contrast behind those voids. It seems crazy to cover up the beautiful grain inside too I know but when you don’t the detail of the piece can be lost against a backdrop of the same colour/pattern.
Moisture… it’s green.. for my if it’s green it’s green, it all turns and moves pretty much the same so iv not taken a MC reading in so long I honestly couldn’t find my meter if I spent a whole day digging.
This piece moved a little while drying but not a great deal, mostly I’d say that’s down to twisted merging grain direction of about 7 branches… and thin and even walls are a must of course. 😊
Thanks for watching dude 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning Its my pleasure man!
I get what you mean about the high contrast within the voids, and it makes perfect sense.
Thanks for taking the time to respond!
The pleasure is all mine matey.. thank you for following along. 😊
Loved your work. What was the finish you applied and the internal 'black'?
Thanks Peter. The finish was danish oil and the black on the inside with acrylic paint.
Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Beautiful piece of wood, what kind of sealer do you use
For sealer I usually use a home made shellac sealer.
Hi jack, fantastic piece I love your work. This is green wood right ? How do you dry the wood ? Or ovoid any further crack or deformation? Thanks
Hi thanks for watching.
Yes the wood was green when turned but the finished photos at the end of the video are from 3 weeks after once the piece has sat in our home and has dried almost fully.. that is to say all movement ( warps and potential cracks) will have happened by that point.
Avoiding cracks is fairly straightforward, the key is to have even thickness down the walls, through the transition and into the base. The thinner the walls the less likely they are to crack as removing wood also removes stored tension.. this tension is what causes cracking as the piece looses moisture and contracts.
I could talk all day on the subject but those are the main things to shoot for.
Thanks for watching.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
😊👍🏻
3 weeks only! I dry my pieces for months ! Anyway thanks a lot for your feedback, all the best !
Drying depends on wall thickness .. ie less mass less drying.
Are you turning green wood to finish or are you twice turning your bowls?
Twice turned bowls are left thick, this removes a large part of the tension in the Wood meaning you can turn them again once they have dried.. this is how I use the turn bowls for sale.. many years ago, before I discovered the wonders of green turning. Yes, if you are twice turning your bowls I’d leave the roughed out blanks to air dry for months.. I would spend 2 solid months turning up to 1000 rough bowls then leave them for a full year before re-turning.
That method has its place in woodturning for sure but I found as I developed my style I no longer wanted to make Chucky heavy bowls and instead my work got thinner and more refined.. at that point it became apparent that turning “green” would give nicer and more natural results, and the colour of the finished bowls is far superior. 3 weeks in a heated home/workshop is more than enough for a thin turned bowl to “dry” , again, that is to say “do all it’s movement” .. dry is a somewhat subjective term as dry would imply 0%MC And as you’ll know that is not what we aim for when we dry bowls..
If you are green turning and then leaving your work for months before you sand and finish it I’d suggest you start to play around with finishing the green wood in one sitting, if you struggle to sand the wood you can blanch the surface using a torch or hot air gun.. after 3 weeks if you’ve turned it right you should see slight to extreme warping (depending on grain orientation and complexity) but zero cracks.
Check out
“Natural selection studio” on Instagram to see results of a similar process.
Until now I have mainly twice turned, but listening you and watching the results of your work, I will definitely try it more often. I also don’t want to become a production turner but create more artistic singular pieces (I start sculpturing some of my pieces). What thickness do you recommend? On every type of wood or mainly burls like in your video ?
Thanks !
For thickness I’d say 5mm and under. But really you can get away with much thicker if the wall is even. I’m yet to find a green wood that doesn’t respond well I favour cherry and sycamore, beech and oak have more of a tendency to split (oak especially in areas of twisted grain)
But don’t avoid green turned oak.. as it dries after sanding and finishing the grain becomes beautifully textured because the summer growth shrinks more than winter growth.
The best thing about it all is your not massively invested in it, financially or emotionally so you can flex through load of form in a day and then see how you feel about them in 3 weeks,, then tweek your approach..
I source (rescue) a lot of my wood from the firewood industry so it’s not super expensive, I buy in volume too again that keeps the price down..
and when I’m done I send all shavings to be made into compost so the life’s work of the tree isn’t diminished.. keep all that carbon locked up for our grandchildren’s children. 😊
Have fun with it.. and remember making shavings is more productive than making bowls (in the long run😉)
What if the inside was blue or green
I can’t even begin to imagine that !! 🤯

The top of a tree where the main stem stops and the branches begin is called a crown. 👍🏻
