- Giant surf at the Wedge (Newport Beach, CA), shot during an epic south swell on July 24 & 25, 2009. Waves sized in excess of 25 feet, created dangerous conditions at this world renowned bodysurfing break. A small number of bodysurfers, bodyboarders and surfers rode the Wedge during the swell. Tragically, one bodysurfer died in the massive surf, despite heroic efforts by Wedge Crew, Point Panics (HI) bodysurfers and Newport Beach lifeguards, to save him. Video: Seabear. My son grew up sponging The Wedge. 1 Hr drive, arriving before sunrise till 10am kick out. It takes balls to drop in on those huge faces knowing you're gonna get hammered in 2 more directions before you're through. The body surfers are really fun and hilarious to watch starting at 10am. I have nothing but respect for body boarders. Represent!

This is one of my favorite wedge videos. I few it several times a year probably. Love the footage and the crowd reactions. Top notch stuff man - ty for the filming and excellent job capturing the scene.

Good to see some old school body surfers. Back in the 60's it was a rare sight to see a "belly board" as they were called back then... and you never saw a surfboard at The Wedge. I bodysurfed here from 1963 - 1970. I returned in 1998 to bodysurf here and celebrate my 50th birthday. Good to see my old stomping grounds again. And to hell with you haters... the respect you get is equal to the respect you give.

I went bodyboarding on the 24th of july (my birthday which was a great present) at Crescent bay in laguna which was only tops... half the size of the wedge that day. And it was nuts. There were 7 people in the water , 3 of which were my family. Almost snapped my elmnopee
Spent most of my youth body surfing.boarding this break at every single big swell that ever came in. (it gets bigger and nastier.)The single most fun place to bodyboard hands down. Big drops, huge barrels, and a quick paddle back into the lineup. And like Ikrux said the sand is just inches under your board in the barrel. Best time was riding the barrel for a few seconds after it closes out on you, then the wave collapses and you slide up on the sand and ready for the next one.

This place is so steep that you don't need a board. I bodyboarded it and bodysurfed it, its scary either way. I can't believe this video got any thumbs down and criticism, The Wedge is a freak of nature that happened by chance, enjoy it or shut it donkeys.
I was there midday during the peak after they blackballed it, and it was absolutely epic. I saw multiple 100 percent makable, clean, top to bottom barrels 20 ft. plus on the face. It was a damn shame you couldn't surf it, cause it was the best huge Wedge I had ever seen. Bodysurfers weren't going, and it literally looked like maxing Pipe. I think they should do away with the blackball there when it's THAT good, cause it's only once in a decade or 2 that it happens
FWIW, the boat guys from :35-:40 could be posterchildren for the "Don't let your boat get caught here!", campaign. That is perfect form to get rolled in the channel during a high surf event. Follow the wave with your boat!

Buried five feet under the sand! LoL......................I was born in Newport (first year baby at Hoag) and went to HS there. I got no balls, never went out when it was that crazy. Live in Vegas now, sure do miss the beach!

First thing's first: RESPECT to all who put The Fear past them and charged it with a smile, especially Mikey from gleneedan beach (don't know the spelling) oregon and the only cat to dropknee it from what i saw (not in the vid), travelled all the way from up north? damn this really is THE spot

did some waves like this around 1970 - was gonna say you didn't catch any of the rebound off the jetty, but there it is @3:03 - quite a mix up when the two waves collide.
i dunno dude, if your talkin about North Carolina when you say NC, that place produces some of the heaviest waves on the east coast. Hurricane swells can produce like 8-10 on 2 foot of water. Heavy Stuff

3-4 ft deep; sand. It's a backbreaker but the funnest wave of your life, no matter what your ridding.
I agree with BZbodyboarer...try the S curve in Rodanthe...before, during and after a hurricane...barrels there are A-lining, not closing out.

@NOOBKILLER192 some people have died. but most of the tome when the wave throws over and hits the shallow bottom, it desperses and gets forced up and out to the sides. so when you get pitched, instead of hitting the bottom, you get tossed around

the wave came up so high that they had to move back the lifeguard post back 15 feet
I tried to go out in the wedge wen it was about four or five feet and the waves were still super powerful
does this kinda surf happen on a regular basis...ie every july. I would love to come out there just to see that. I am from Toronto and love California, Thanks

Mavs is huge at 20-25ft - thats double overhead beachbreak right there, Peurto gets bigger. Sure its big for the wedge, but not 25ft.

no names, but some folks used to do the Wedge on acid (likewise the Pipeline on a board).

@Beanerman808 not very deep at all, 3-4ft in places. One of the heaviest shorebreaks in the world. It's quite heavy even in a minute swell, let alone one this big. I've never seen it huge there. Every time I'm in SoCal it's flat as.

I know someone that survived surfing there. Not boogie board, he stood up on a reg. Surf board, they had to call emergency services for him but IDK. IS THAT really a rare thing for people to do at the wedge? Surf instead of boogie board?
