In the Boundary Waters, they allow live bait. However, in Quetico, they do not. If you want to use live bait in the BWCA, just bring some size 4 red octopus hooks, some size 6 octopus hooks, and some size 2 octopus hooks. Also bring some split shot weights to cast further and keep your bait down. Bring some bobbers to help with bite indication. Slip bobbers work best. Look up a tutorial on how to put a bobber stop on your line. Once the bobber stop is on there, just slip the bobber up and put 1 split shot weight about 8 inches above the hook. I like thill slip bobbers. Other lures that work really well are Mepps aglia inline spinners in any size. Bring the size 00 - size 1 for brook and rainbow trout, as well as panfish. Bring size 2-3 for smallmouth and some light pike fishing, and bring the mepps aglia LONG in sizes 4 and 5 for northern pike. Spinners with a hair dressing catch larger fish, but not quite as many. Another good lure to bring is the river2sea whopper plopper. I would use the 75 size to catch smallmouth, and I would use the berkley choppo, a similar lure from a different brand, in the 105 size for pike. Always make sure to have some 1/8 and 1/4 oz jig heads. You use these with the curly tail grubs mentioned above and they can also be used with live bait. The storm 360gt search bait is also great paddle tail. Use the 3 1/2 inch size for smallmouth and walleye and the 4 1/2 inch size for pike. If you don’t want to carry live bait, a good alternative that will catch perch, sunfish, and maybe some crappies are the berkley Gulp! Alive waxies. In terms of areas to cast into, rock piles, boulders, rocky shoreline points, weeds, and fallen trees are always the best places to start. If you have a portable fish finder, find drop offs and fish along those for suspended fish. Humps and ditches are also good. The best live bait all around would be leeches, but I would bring some red worms (not nightcrawlers) as well to catch smaller fish. The original floating rapala would also work great.
I hear the pike get much bigger in Europe than they do in America. I'm going to have to try and fish there some day and bring my own wooden lures. Chris
hi i love pike fishing in ireland can you make pike lures out of wood id like to see wat you can do if you do sum lures can you post one to ireland thanks
Did you mean to say Quetico when you said no live bait or barbed hooks? I've been to the BWCA 3 times and never heard you can't bring barbed hooks or love bait. People everywhere have leeches in the BWCA.
Chop With Chris I think inline spinners get a bad rap because they are used by inexperienced fisherman so much, they are easy to use. I have caught plenty of fish with them, I use them as a search tool.
@@timlee1293I know I’m about 8 years late to respond to this, but I totally agree. The same thing often gets said about things like beetle spins and even live bait. They flat out catch fish. Having fun fishing is all that matters, whether you’re using a leech under a bobber, a Texas rigged worm, a whopper plopper, or a mepps aglia
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm heading back to the Quetico in July and looking forward to it.

Thanks for the advise!
@@ChopWithChris no problem! I’m kinda sorta 8 years late though, lol
😄
Thanks. If you look through my videos I have a canoe trip video where we are catching fish - you may enjoy that as well.
Chris
helpful video for a guy planning his first trip to the bwca
I'm not even interested in fishing but I could listen to you talk about anything, Chris.
Fly fishing is awesome! My brother makes how own flies.
Chris
The black flies die out in Canada by June so July is pretty nice. Lots of mosquitoes but they are manageable.
Chris

I actually have never made a fishing lure. Maybe in a future project.
Take care.
Chris
how about for flies in the northwest?

Sorry if I was not clear. Restrictions apply in the Quetico.
Barbless hooks only required in Quetico.
True
I was surprised you did not mention inline spinners like a Mepps. Have you ever tried fluorocarbon leaders with a swivel?
I've just never been a big fan of spinners. I do like the fluorocarbon leaders.

Ever consider carving fishing lures?
No but I should!
Chris
Live bait most certainly IS allowed in the BWCA
Not in Quetico
if i used a spin cast rod this would have been helpful
thanks, my grandpa taught me when i was 10 and i loved it at first horrible cast
They just don;'t work as well as Mr Twisters!
Went in 2012 had 6 dozen crawlers never heard live bait want allowed we bought them from an outfitter in 2012
+Moretti Pyrotechnics and Kayaking Boundary Waters is OK, Quetico now is not 😖
Chop With Chris I wonder why? They basically touch is that because its Canada?
+Moretti Pyrotechnics and Kayaking They just want to be extra careful so nothing gets in there that they can't get out.
+Moretti Pyrotechnics and Kayaking Its so hard to catch walleye without worms 😇
live bait isnt allowed? since when...
In the Quetico region it is not allowed. If you’re on the Minnesota side you can!
Anyone still watching 2021 lol
Always!
but i love fly fishing
Bout 10 years - this is the Canadian side, no the US side
It's called details is how it's pronounced but it's spelled rapala
Repaulas
I hope you don't catch a big nordern!
Ha!
