@Jinxks no disagreement there. I meant for the non-enthusiasts that never care for their cars properly, an automatic wash every once in a while is the LEAST they should do.

Hey @thedetailgeek ! As a detailer let me share my experience with you. In my opinion you used too much chemical (that was too weak) on very neglected wheel ultimately leading to wasting chemical. What I would do would be using the right chemical with lesser amount - the one that works for me well is Koch Chemie Felgenreiniger extrem. With low PH you simply: - rinse and clean the wheel first - spray on “FE” - let it sit and desolve the imbedded “crust” for 1-2 min - rinse off This way you minimize the efford and time needed for deep cleaning the wheel. You can take off all of the residue but it takes a shit load of time and a really high ph mag cleaner. I did one couple weeks ago and it was a pain lol
which is the best chemical? tried that sodium oxide stuff, it works, but needs alot of scrubbing with a strong/hard sponge and brush. more than an hour per wheel, at least, to get em like new, down to the clear coat. powered tools seems to be the better way of doing things, but the proper harshness of the brush seems to be the main thing to get right so as to not spend half a day on it..
never leave your tire this bad bc as you can see it leaves bad stains that marks the tire and imagine the back of the tire, watch ChrisFix he shows you how to fix stuff like this
Here in Germany we have "AluTeufel" (AluDevil) and after 3 passes even these Rims will be like Brandnew. We used it on burnt in Mercedes Rims. BUT: Only useable with long sleeve Gloves because that Stuff is so incredible Acidic your whole arms will Itch. Afterward thouroughly rinse and everything is fine.
This is easy compare to chrome plated rims used many years without cleaning. Anyone who has ever done it knows how many hours it takes to do such a renovation.
I cleaned a friend's car at the weekend, their wheels were the worst ever, could not remove the baked on dirt/ brake dust, so i used soap pads, after checking with them that it might leave slight scratches, I got it all off. 👊
I bet you anything that wheel would’ve been clean as new without scrubbing by rinsing it off spraying aluminum brightener on rinse and repeat 2-3 times and there ya go 🤷🏻♂️
When it comes to Wheels like that that have been heavily neglected I always do a wheel off. Meaning I take the wheel completely off the vehicle and I clean them up inside and out. Getting all of the brake dust and debris off. Which also means I usually use a much stronger acid on them
Almost every aluminum wheel on a chrysler that I've worked on has this problem. I can get them back to 100%, given there's no damage. But I charge $100/wheel or $350/4
@BUT SKIIUEEPP I don't use acid bases because there's no telling what condition the wheel will be in after using it. Spraying products at the problem can only do so much. A good, well-mixed degreaser, iron remover, and polish are key for sure. But, how you agitate, scrub, brush, etc. are key components to getting good finish.
@@savageSSG1320 true but after how much elbow grease? And truthfully if a clients car is that neglected then a few blemishes form acid aren’t gonna change anything. Time is money when you’re a business owner.
@BUT SKIIUEEPP It takes quite a bit for sure. There are plenty of neutral based cleaners on the market that work as well as acid base cleaners. That's true, and my detailing business is a side gig. If I'm getting a car that I'm going to detail inside out, I mean wash, clay, paint correct, wax, seal, shampoo, vacuum, steam, etc. That car is staying for a day or 2 already, and I'm banking $650 minimum from that job. Wheel restoration is added on top of that. Yeah, neglect is obviously an issue to consider. I personally just dont like to use acid based cleaners. Today, you can get sued for the dumbest $hit. I have seen customers try to lawsuit scam my shop owner at the last civilian shop I worked at, he was able to beat them with his attorneys, but over people trying to make unethical monetary gains. SBA owners have a lot on the line as it is than to have to worry about dumb lawsuits. That's why I take pictures of everything before and after, and do a full walkthrough before and after annotating every scratches, blemishes, tears, holes, etc. Hard to argue the use of acid on aluminum wheels in court. Even if you proved you didn't know, negligence will get you because it says right on the bottle not to use on aluminum wheels.
Brake dust that has oxidized. Neglected rims after so long get like this. Hotter the climate - the worse it appears. Usually requires an acid to fully remove off.
The resadue left behind me could actually be fixed with polish and a clay bar, the only way it couldn’t have been fixed is if brake fluid somehow got on it
I honestly thought those wheels were bronzed!
Yep btw giving u first comment
i thought them were two tone wheels
me too

those residual stains are from brake dust i’d assume so some mguires all wheel cleaner with iron in it should make EASY work of it
Acid diluted 4/1 would have taken the rest of that off easily. Been my go to for 10 years would look new
