Watching you uncover yet another challenge I imagine the work and money that needs to be poured into it to fully restore it. No wonder many are sold for a steal of a price. But on the other hand, you are helping to preserve history and give the chateau another few hundred years to be enjoyed by future generations and that is super admirable.
Wow....hard decision to take down the ceiling, but a wise one. Some of those beams looks really rough and I am glad that you will have someone come to look at them. You always do the right thing and look forward to see how this goes. You are doing an amazing job.....well done and both of you deserve a nice glass of wine....🍷
My father in law, a Spaniard, had a saying regarding home projects, "Any one thing is seven things". It's SO true with renovations. Love your videos. Thank you for being so real. Hope to be in your neck of the woods by 2025, but not with a reno but with a plain 'retirement' place. Love it there!
It’s the stove that doesn’t wanna leave. When in doubt duct tape it.😂 Lincoln you are very patient, and hard-working man. 👏🏼 You never know what lurks above the ceiling. These are pure gold. Thank you
You are both very entertaining, but quite mad! Doing a renovation in order to do a renovation is completely crazy! I always wait impatiently to see what madcap idea you will come up with next. I think this week will win first prize in ultimate craziness! Good luck! 💕
I had to laugh when you said you didn’t burst into flames going into the church. I love your sense of humour, Amanda.🤗🇨🇦 And OMG such a lot of work to do in the cottage. But you might as well do a good job and save yourself time and effort in the long run.
That cottage is so charming so at least now you know it’s structure. Hopefully it won’t require much to have it be structurally sound and put up a new ceiling for your temporary kitchen. I was shouting duct tape when you said you got the duct tape! Thank you for sharing the Celtic history in Brittany. You must get the chills when you see the centuries old buildings, and statues. There’s no admiring how disposable we Americans are when it comes to our old buildings. It’s in my opinion disgraceful how we can tear down beautiful old buildings to put in a shopping center or a hi rise. I admire your decision to change your lifestyle.
Bless you for showing some of the Breton culture! I have been to Brittany four times, mostly in summer, and have attended several Celtic festivals. I encourage you to check the schedule for next summer and go to some. Many young people participate, in full costume and playing in pipe bands [or bagads, as they call them]. The bigger fetes are in Lorient and Quimper, and have big parades.
Dear Amanda and Lincoln, thanks for this video and all my best with the huge amount of work to come ! If I may, as a small information : before the conquest by the Roman legions, the population of the Gaul (territory of modern France) was already Celtic (and still today, French population is mainly of Celtic descent). But you are right when you say that Celtics from Wales landed in Gaul, while trying to escape the Saxon invasion of England. The barrier between Brittany did not thus come from difference of origins but language, when Bretons kept their Celtic language whereas the rest of the Gauls adopted the Latin then later French 😉 Have a good evening, and enjoy the Advent !!!
You could hook a donkey up to the stove, they could move it easy if you had the harness necessary. They are meant to do heavy work not just for their adorable looks.
I can see that your life in France is very different from living in San Fran, however, it may be heightened in some ways, more space, pride of ownership and of something quality with heritage. Bravo.
Great job. I know afterwards, I'd want a tub filled with hot clean water to soak my bones and indulge with an alcoholic snifter of something very soothing. Your giggles are always welcomed sounds and keep the joie alive despite any new challenge. The concert was lovely.
Love the Breton culture and music in this vlog. The cottage demo is quite the undertaking. Glad you’re getting someone to check those beams. As always you sense of humor cracks me up (so happy you didn’t burst into flames)🔥 😂😂😂😍😘
You would make such fun neighbors! And, thank you for a glimpse of Breton culture...I didn't know that about the Celtic influence! Beautiful inside the church...would've loved to hear the music. You and Lincoln handle everything with such aplomb! Say "hi" to the donkeys!
Perhaps the stone sink could go in one of the cottages. It could be too heavy on the upper levels. Another massive chateau owner removed a heavy stone bath because the structural beams were compromised. Well done!
It's so great to see the life and opportunities you are providing for your daughters. And your hard work, stamina and problem solving is a great example too, especially when it makes more mess. I feel for you two every time I see a new renovation project. Hope hot baths and more of that mulled wine helps your recovery to begin again !
Thanks for the history lesson. My grandfathers family moved from Brittany to the Isle of Jersey after persecution for being Huguenots in the early 1500s. I always thought of them as French, but I bet they were Celts. My Ancestry DNA results makes more sense now.
Dominic should be helping you guys I would grab a leash, harness. Strap A trustee, carrot in front of him and you won’t have to worry about the mud.❤️❤️
Wow ! The ceiling ! 🤔😵. What will you have to do as a permanent solution ? All this to make a temporary kitchen so you can restore and renovate the chateau kitchen. OMG ! 😮 Change of plans ! Stay safe and sane !💖😊
You guys constantly amaze me. You're so hard working and never seem overwhelmed. Lincoln is doing an incredible job. Love watching you two breath new life into this Chateau. The villagers will be very happy if they are like the ones near my mother in laws place in Soffin near Authiou.
I actually like the rough edges of that piece of wood that was the bar top. They have a nice, rustic feel. You'll find just the right place to use it again! That demolition project on the ceiling really turned into a mess! But you're right, it's better to do that before renovating anything else in the room. Making the structure sound has to be the first priority.
You are a hard worker Lincoln and so even tempered for all the frustrating jobs you end up doing. Seems in the Chateau fixing one problem leads to several other problems. Good luck!!
Lincoln is so laidback I’m surprised he can stay horizontal 👍😊😊 a roll model for all men on how to be love watching your renovation of the cottage and chateau
The thin wood that came out of the ceiling makes great kindling. I’ve also seen other chateau owners reuse the plaster as a base layer for a parking lot and pathways. The building is beautiful and will make a wonderful gite one day. I love the layout and feel of it.
If you don't have to replace the beams, you can sandblast them and give them some coats of Osmo and leave them exposed if that's the look you want to go for. And for the floor above to be straight you can add a piece of wood above the beam ..
Amanda, I have to compliment you, the production quality of your videos has really become exceptional. Your use of light and color, along with wonderful use of music, leads me to think that you and Lincoln may want to consider a trip to Cannes. I swear, when this video began, I thought for a moment that I was watching an episode of Succession. Great work!
I just love everything about living there, even with all the work. You and Lincoln work well together and eventually everything gets done as you need it or like it. I hope it stops raining there a bit before it starts snowing. This has been so hard for everyone trying to renovate. Get some time to relax😊😊😊❤
Unbelievable. You just want to renovate the kitchen in the chateau. And I say just. That's a whole mission in itself, but you have to have somewhere to cook in the meantime and then that needs renovating. When you looked outside from your temporary kitchen, I thought oh no they need to put in a driveway to move the old stove. I must admit, I watch you each week and still didn't realise how much work it is. You will do it and make it beautiful too.
Every time I watch your videos I love your home even more. The colors are perfect, and your renovations are so well done. I admire your drive to get it done and not give up!
I really enjoy your channel. I am very curious as to why you are doing a temporary kitchen at all. It seems like you would just go full force on the chateau kitchen and be done with it-eating PBJs along the way. I know you said you were going to renovate the cottage eventually, but it seems like more work and expense before the main kitchen gets done.
I had a good laugh with you watching the major stove wrangling. It was a beast of a thing.😂 All the best with this new reno. Love this room and the windows are beautiful.
Wow! Had to wear my safety googles for this one!…lots of work, yet much needed… appreciate the effort and care in restoring the buildings…I have a feeling the temp kitchen is going to look amazing.. great history lesson… love the filming… we got our donkey hat and wearing it proudly!❤
I love everything that you have done, but I will say it looks Like it is going to be a bigger task to renovate the temporary kitchen than what it would be to just do the main kitchen, but I am sure it will be beautiful when you get finished with it. I admire your patience because neither one of you seems to let setbacks bother you.
Spray the beams for wood worm, strengthen what needs to be strengthened and “crack on” . It is only a slight delay which adds to the charm. Really what else would you be doing? Keep up the great work.
When I had to replace a beam like that in my home I cut an opeing into the wall to pass the beam from outdoors into the interiror. With a lot of help from others in my family we safely removed the old beam after placing temporary supports and put in the new to re-support the roof above. Good to have a structural engineer look at the project and provide a safe plan of action. The general rule is 1" of thickness per foot of beam. The old beams may be over span and part of why they are so sagged. Best of luck and safety to you guys as you take this on. Brian

It seems such a waste of time and effort to be renovating the cottage in order to renovate the chateau but I can see where you are coming from the beams look bad to me but I am no expert ..I love your enthusiasm and humour along with it I admire you both ❤
Intrepid. That's what you both are. I've been dithering/delaying painting two ceilings. You just get on it with it. Here's to a temporary kitchen, soon. Thank you for sharing the lovely window on Breton culture.
you were right to bring down the ceiling otherwise you were at the mercy of a generalized collapse.. in these old buildings it is better to make sure to control the structures .. You should cut the wood stove with a grinder ..Good luck for the future🎄🎄

Now they live in the beautiful homes we did together and laugh when we sit in front of their fireplace reminiscing of the good, bad and ugly we overcame with sweat, muscle and lots of love. Yay, two videos in a week! Duct tape the door! lol. OMG I'm psychic! What I think would make an interesting video for you guys to make is to let us know what you moved to France with. Did you sell everything or ship some furniture? How much did you take? And if you brought much, how did you do it and how much did the move cost? Inquiries minds want to know (for future reference). Love the donkeys
One never knows what they are getting into until the work starts. This is a huge job as well, but I am sure you guys can do it. I am rooting for you both. Thanks for the lesson on the briton dancers. Also, that church performance sounded lovely.

Or three!!
The renovation BEFORE the renovation. "Do you want to bang it with a banger?" 😂
You are the only channel that puts tarp down for the rubble. Makes light work
Well I can honestly say that your channel has taught me that I never want to renovate a chateau. And poor Lincoln has all the fun of the grunt work.
You guys are so brave. Tearing crap out, moving ovens and taking charge! I'm loving it!
So much work for this hard working man. God bless you always.
I just loved that music. As for the beams: over Christmas pin some tinsel on them and don't look up. :) :) :)
LOL!! Tis the Season..🎄🎄🎄🧑🏼🎄🧑🏼🎄🎄🎄
It’s the stove that doesn’t wanna leave. When in doubt duct tape it.😂 Lincoln you are very patient, and hard-working man. 👏🏼 You never know what lurks above the ceiling. These are pure gold. Thank you
Lincoln is the man 😘💪
You are both very entertaining, but quite mad! Doing a renovation in order to do a renovation is completely crazy! I always wait impatiently to see what madcap idea you will come up with next. I think this week will win first prize in ultimate craziness! Good luck! 💕
Maybe it would be easier to renovate the grand salon and the dining room, and then wait for the summer to do the kitchen and cottage/outdoor kitchen?
In the heat? Hell naw!
After a bad day due to health issues, watching a video from you is a blessing! Thanks for sharing your routine and experiences with us! ❤
Thank you for watching :)
Lincoln looking like a ' Wirling Dervesh ' on the scaffold. ; )
😍Thats what I love about living in Europe, the architecture, the history, the traditions!! 💖💖 Involving the next generation is key!🥰

Oh the open can of worms of renovations. I find your cottage/outbuildings really enchanting. Thanks for the cultural lesson of Brettony.

That was hilarious 😀

I never knew about the Celtics settling that area. So very interesting for sure.

For a minute at the Church concert I thought one of the guys standing up front was Lincoln.

Easily one of my favorites of your videos. I just dig the dry humor that both of you share😀. And I love the get the hands dirty approach.
There is something so satisfying in watching someone else do demo.

As someone who should, in theory, burst into flames as well, Lol I absolutely love the beauty of old churches and that music ❤
Right? So lovely.
I thoroughly enjoyed today's vlog. You made me laugh when moving the stove. You guys are great. 😂
Looks like the wood has a live edge. If it’s in good condition, I wouldn’t mess with it. A slab with a live edge could be very valuable.
