Angus doesn’t play on his vocal parts for this song. He flings his hands up in the air while singing his little parts.
Try playing La Grange by ZZ Top while singing the intro lyrics
Find a guitar player who can play the intro correctly. Even Gibbons fudges it up live.
Not that hard..
@@alexwoolridge94aw what are you talking about? The intro is not hard. Any semi-good guitarist can play that perfectly well.

For a drummer this is a common thing. But its really hard to learn, its something every good musician will learn at some point of their "studies".
Very true.
Syncopation is a hell of a thing
Us drummers do this all the time... It's kinda our thing. I get that it's a bit of a mind-melter if you're not used to it!
Yeah, Malcolm and Cliff (Or Mark) weren't playing while doing the "OI!" You're right though. It's bloody hard.
Usually Angus starts the song with his hands in the air hyping the crowd while doing vocals only.
cigarettes don't give you cancer - picks do.
When it was played live, Angus didnt play while doing the Oi’s
@@Hamer4114 Only the bass is playing during the chorus Oi's and that's just rumbling along on the E.

It sounds nice though
@@jessicabyard3507 Fair, but give me one example of ACDC using an acoustic guitar...
The Chad Pad there is a video I watched the other day on RUclips with angus young playing an acoustic guitar :) nothing is wrong with acoustic guitars AC/DC can play them you can play AC/DC on any instrument you want
The Chad Pad they also do a acoustic you shook me all night long 😊
haha...So true... My band covered this song years ago and the only one that could get the Oys in time was the drummer... Glad to know Im not alone! hahaha
Even harder: play the riff, sing the "oi" and sing the lyrics at the same time !
Oi means Cucumber in Korean, and this video just made me laugh all the time. Thank you~! Loved it.
That's hilarious!
In Australian it means ‘hey you!’
Really Mr. Lee? North or South? Or same for both? I might have to let my jindo play with an oi. Are jindos somehow related to dingos?
*edited to improve charitable yet condescending tolerance.
Mark Swarbrick I always think it is unwise to use terms like ‘you fool’ in comments on the internet. Especially in circumstances when my own understanding is limited.
In Australia we speak a language known as English. This is the language of the British Islands, you see Australia was once a British colony. However it should be acknowledged that English derived from Latin, Greek, French and other Germanic languages. I am not a linguist but I know these things. So the majority of the English language did not originate in Australia, but it also did not originate in England!
Now when exactly do you think Australia began to ‘exist’? Was it when Captain Cook landed there in 1770? Was it when Arthur Phillip brought the first British exile criminals in 1788? In fact Australia as a land mass and continent is ancient, far more ancient than the English language.
I think I understand your point, you interpret my explanation ‘in Australia oi means hey you’ as ‘Australians were saying oi before anybody else’. I respectfully suggest you need to work on your comprehension. Why should I speak a language from the other side of the planet if the people who live where it originates can’t understand it?
Ps who’s the fool now? Best.
Brazilians also use "oi" for hello. i'm not sure if the Portugese do it too, or if it's just a thing in Brazil.
performed live the "Oi's" are shouted by lead vocalist and non-playing guitarist as far as i can tell. i absolutely agree it is sheer luck to get that right while playing live. keep on rockin' leon!
Well its malcom playing thats why
Brian Johnson has confirmed he is working with ACDC on a new album....2019.......😎😎😎😎😎
That makes me excited
That's badass
@@LeonTodd there's been alot of speculation. Since they were spotted in vancouver people have straight up assumed they are back with a album and full tour. But it seems like there is insurance issues regarding the tours, and whether or not they just plan an album.
Yeah.
Bon Scott > Brian Johnson
This video was made by Scott Ian when he was young in the 80s. He has just made the quality good of the video. Don’t get fooled by the quality and the date. Can’t you see all the old school shit he has in the background.
"Scott austral-ian."
Everyone knows Scott Ian was goku's character designer, it's great to see his original artwork here
Funny thing is that scott ian is also a big AC/DC Fan (even got tatoos of Malcolm an Angus on his arms)who talked a lot about the actual difficulty of the Acdc songs.
Poké- Champ yeah I know that’s why i said that. I was just about to type it but I didn’t wanna go into details.
Dude this is a crazy coincidence because every once in a blue moon, I’ll go back and get on an AC/DC kick, and they were the ones who made me wanna pick up a guitar, so I’ve been playing a lot of their stuff lately and tried to play this one just the other night with the “oi’s” and I was like, “God that’s hard!” Saw this video and I was like, “Is he gonna say it’s hard for the same reasons?!” Sure enough! AC/DC, among other bands get shit for their songs being “easy” but they’re so not, if you actually wanna play them right.
Angus and Malcolm are the gods Of guitar!!
Yeah even when AC/DC play this song live, the intro has Malcolm playing the riff and Angus singing "Oi oi oi"
this is why AC/DC is "classic" their simplicity is invincible!
Ramones have even easier songs lol
went to a paul gilbert clinic and he did this and said he sang and played that riff for practice

I’ve always said this about “Come as You Are” as well. It’s deceptively difficult to do cause of the 2 different swing feels of the guitars and vocals! Great vid man!
This came up in my recommended. Thought it was an April fools joke. But no?
In my experience, most guitarists I come across don't have the rhythm right. Some are too loose. Others are too tight, almost robotic. It's interesting listening to others play it. I know I ain't perfect with their songs neither, but once you know how/why AC/DC works, you can start to see where others fall short.
It's all about the Malcolm Young/Phil Rudd/Mark Evans connection. That early AC/DC stuff is so rhythmically deceptive (especially when discussing backing vocals) it's often taken for granted just how amazing that early rhythm section was. And to think think that when Evans left that they found a more than adequate replacement in bassist Cliff Williams is pretty crazy. AC/DC are the kings of "their songs are so simple BUT..." But that's what happens when you have a band that was stylistically on the cusp of several genres (rock/blues/proto-punk) and possess higher than average skill-sets. Also, it's interesting to watch early '76-'77 footage of the band playing "TNT". They often handclap to keep time. Everything about the band ends up being deceptively simple. Yeah, the riff progressions are great intro-level stuff but when you put it ALL together the band was far from as "basic" as many label them.
Easy fix, just bang your head to the rhythm of the oi and concentrate on the riff.
Malcom Young .
What A Man.
The Greatest Rhythm Guitarist In Music History.
Step 1 learn to play and sing TNT
Step 2 learn to play and sing Holy Wars
Step 3 give up
Profit
The holy wars solo is god tier and more about just nailing the aggression of it than the accuracy really
This is an overlooked skill that probably seems boring to a lot of guitarists, but is pretty important for any working band. It's not a flashy thing that anyone will ever notice you individually for, but strong, tight vocals is a thing audiences will definitely appreciate, imo. It's worth putting in that work in and, like anything else, gets easier over time. "TNT" is a good place to start. I just tried it and it's tricky. What I normally do is, first, know the guitar part well enough so it's kind of on "auto pilot", which makes the vocal easier to get and, hopefully with enough practice, your not thinking about either part, at all. Something you definitely want to avoid onstage, if possible. The other thing that I find helpful is to count in double time so your feeling, in this case, 1/8th notes instead of 1/16th's. Cheers.
@Cory Trevorson Hey, for the record. I did try the "Oy's" while banging out the chords and your right, it's harder than I thought. So, good choice. Going to edit my comment a bit for that.
@Cory Trevorson Hey Cory. For the record, I did end up trying later and it was more challenging than I originally thought. So, with all due respect, I edited my comments to reflect that. Thanks for the post.
Why HAPPY BIRTHDAY is technically imposible.
This riff syncopation paired w the 4 on floor rhythm section is the heart of AC/DC and bands like JET, Black Keys, and many more. If you need to palm off backing vox to the bass n drummer it’s a small price for the awesome thump n groove it produces when the band plays tight
Angus primarily does the "Oi" and does not play while he does it. In the studio version, the other backing vocals I'm pretty sure were just layered on top. Live, it's just Angus and the crowd, with Malcolm (now Stevie) playing the rhythm guitar behind it.
Handy hint: if tapping your foot on 2 and 4 is too difficult at first try alternating feet, left on 1 and 3 and right on 2 and 4. Then when you've got that going drop the left foot.
I’m sure Angus & Bon done the “Oi” in the intro and then through the song it was Malcolm & Angus
You have crept up to become one of my absolute favourite guitar channels. You are a likeable guy (bloke?)
Your also a great guitar player. Thank you
(Nobody paid me for this. )
Agreed. Seems like you could just walk in and grab a beer, sit down and start shooting the shit with this guy. Talented too.
I really enjoy your channel. I especially love the parts of your different videos where you a figuring out something while recording it makes me feel like I can and need to take things slow and work it out. You also show some vulnerability which I like also.
I appreciate that mate
Hey Leon. I think I see the Atomic Amplifire 6 in the background there? This is my main unit and I learned a bunch from your videos on dialing them in. Forever gratefull for those!!!
Can confirm-getting AC/DC backing vocals to sound good is way harder than it seems. I was in a Bon Scott AC/DC tribute act here in Perth in the early 2010’s and can testify that many hours were spent in rehearsal getting the backing vocals right - George and Harry were the masters of simplicity and the boys learned from the best
Have a chat to your local drummer...
It's nice to have a guitarist acknowledge some of the struggle drummers have to deal with all the time.
You just perfectly described every Friday night
That's why Angus shouts the "Oi"'s, while Malcolm plays the riff, in the intro part.. when Live..
AC/DC is the eighth wonder of the world!
I'm not good at this. I can do the Oi part, guitar is like breathing, but that shit together might as well be in Sanskrit. Papa Hett can probably pull it off. I'll just let my guitar be my voice and save some headaches.
In live shows, it's Angus doing the Oi Oi at the start. For the rest of the song, Mal & Cliff doing the backup vocals.
Fact: Oi is also the Indian way of referring to someone.
Singing Day Tripper while playing the riff is a similar problem for me. Sir Paul makes it look a lot easier than it is.
Wrong, George plays the riff on lead guitar, Paul plays bass but I feel you on that the riff confuses me sometimes and I fuck up a note
Haha oh well, Im also a drummer so this is incredibly easy for me...but I can imagine how hard it must be...
Yeah man, it’s very difficult. The guitarists we are used to follow the groove, not being in it? I mean we just follow what are the drums playing or following a metronome or just making a “four in the floor” with our feet. I highly respect the drummers and those that sing at the same time... they are just gods.
My english is not perfect and I’m trying to get better, so... I’m sorry if you don’t understand what I was trying to say.
"this is where the link between ac/dc and jazz comes in." Wasn't expecting that.
Back In Black is one of the greatest guitar riffs ever, it seems simple, but there's something absolutely devilish in the timing.
How I learned.....Practice first tapping your foot on the beat then by counting out loud “ one - two - one - two etc” while playing then by saying “one - oi - one - oi...” then keep the one in your head and vocalise the oi.....
Awesome video. Got a new subscriber, bud! BTW, never had to play and sing TNT (well, I did, but on the bass, which isn't played for half the song anyway), but Come As You Are and Man In The Box were very difficult for me at the beginning for the same reason.
Are you hiding behind the scenes at my cover band's practices???? We're having the same exact problem with those confounded OY's!
Great video.....and you're right, it's hard as hell to get the timing right while playing!
Keep up the good work mate!
As always, Peace and love from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.
You sometimes hear "Oi!" used in Scotland too. Angus, Malcolm and Bon would have been aware of it before they left Scotland for Australia.
I’’m sure it’s originally a British saying taken over to Australia and made it there own. We use it a lot here in England in every day life but it’s definitely made famous by Aussies... we’ll let em have this one ;)
@@tomrose6395 Definitely a Brit thing, those Aussie convicts are still nicking stuff off of us ;)
No they wouldn't

The "oi " part is something used alot by the punk, and skinhead bands in England in the 70s. And 80s. It was normal around that time TNT was recorded.
Still is here in Australia

Fun fact - that's why angus does the intro oi's live and malcom plays the riff by himself. He actually uses a mooer booster pedal on this song only to push his sound a bit harder (Activated by his stage tech). Also, the "damnation" backing on rock n roll damnation is also a bit tricky. Our rhythm guitarist leaves out the fingered notes during this.
This makes so much sense!
@@LeonTodd if you watch "angus youngs rig run down" on you tube it's super insightful. Talks through every aspect of angus and malcoms setup including amp settings.
Dude, have you ever tried to play Constant Motion?
No video has made me want to visit Australia more. Thank you
my guitar teacher always said that only bad musicians are counting by tapping with their foot.....But he also said you have to practice since your fingertips are bleeding.
I'm late at the party here, but it may help to tap the beat with alternating feet. L R L R or R L R L. The 1 and 3 foot can help you lock onto the beat, while the 2 and 4 foot helps you time the oys.
What makes angus so good is that he manages to play his own bad ass riffs perfectly while running, jumping, being carried, and rolling around on the floor
Another great example of the riff being super easy but singing to it is really difficult is come as you are
So that’s why you have your other members do the Oi as you play the riff.
Oi is from Britain
Let’s not forget that the Young’s and Bon were immigrants who were from Scotland
Same thing lol
Who tf cares
Fucking ay this is a FACT. I was lead singer/rhythm guitar and I'd always have the bass and lead player do the Oi's at the start while I 'd play the rhythm figure and say SFA.
Powerage is the greatest and most underrated album imo. Here's a funny story that showcases that and what happened to me in 09' standing in line at the venue getting tickets. They were playing ACDC on the speakers and Gimme A Bullet came on. One of the dudes turned around and looked at everyone and had asked if this was off their new one (black ice) jesus almighty. I said unless you consider their new one 30 years ago lol.
Such underrated players! Total teamwork. Malc especially, RIP.
I have the same problem trying to sing "breaking the law" while playing the guitar riff from that song!
This is of course a great lesson. And very well done. As a guitarist who has done a few AC/DC tributes I will say “this is a Malcolm problem, not an Angus problem.” Carry on!
Holy shit you’re right this is difficult! I’m a guitarist/singer/drummer and I’m having a really difficult time with this!
Hey, could you tell me what Chords youre playing TNT on?, or are they the same ones you would play on E Guitar?, so E Power Chord, then E String 3rd fret, and then A Powerchord
Do the members of AC/DC use regular size guitars, or kid sized guitars?
Please tell me you have the other foot doing 1 and 3...yes?
battery with vocals is harder
*change my mind*
that's just it. singing won't work for me either because messes up where i am in the playing. same goes for too much talking. If it's not a Yes/No answer you want from me...forget it.
See me ride out of that sunset on color TV screen!!
Now imagine trying to play the bell in 'Hells Bells' while trying to play the guitar riff!
It’s not just me!!! I feel much better, thanks!
It’s the whole tapping the head while rubbing your tummy thing. It’s not too difficult if you find the method that works for you. I noticed that you have no issue banging your head to all 4 beats while playing the riff, so use that to your advantage
Can you do one on back in black and how a backing track makes it 1000000% easier to learn?
To this day hearing even pros play without a track or band the lick always seems off and in the exact same way almost every time.
Maybe it starts on an off beat 🤔
My favourite thing about ACDC is that they use a lot of open chords. It's more fun than the powerchords that make up most rock music and it sounds so good
(Edit) Emily Remler is my favourite guitarist. I subbed to you just cos you know who she is 😂
Emily's playing is simply wonderful!
I think you had it when you bobbed your head to your right on the 2 & 4 @3:19 . Just add "oi" while bobbing, then start playing the riff.
Playing and singing the intro of All My Life by Foo Fighters still makes knots with my brain to this day
so randomly find this video in my recomended in youtube, i click it , all of the sudden im grabing my guitar and trying to "Hoy" playing that tnt riff at the same time and i find out how ridiculosly dificult it is and laughing my ass out xD you just earned a subscriver "HOY" xD
I actually found a reliable way for me to do it. Learn the riff good. When you stand by the mic you start to headbang. On ones you move your head back, this way on twos and fours your head will be close to the mic and it's easy do sing Oi. It works for me
As someone that's grown up playing jazz trombone, counting and tapping my foot on 2 and 4 is pretty much natural for me no matter what crazy rhythm I'm playing up top... as for playing the guitar, well, this song's riff is still hard to me lol
I thought this was going to be dumb as it's only three chords. By adding the OIs, yeah, it's tough to get through that a few times without messing the timing up.
Actually, my first one-stringer was Smoke on the Water. And I bet I'm not the only one...
