I had a very serious hand and wrist injury on my fretting (left) hand as well, my cast was only on for about 2 months but i needed a month of physical therapy to be able to move my thumb and index again. I never played much guitar even though I had a nice Ibanez sitting around but as soon as I injured myself I just felt such a strong need to play... and just like you after I was able I started learning again :P This was only about a year ago tho so I'm sure I won't be able to hit any Satriani's any time soon
SgtBot DUDE musically turning your therapy into an enjoyable activity makes the pain worth it. I can totally recommend the stretches and activities from John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline" instructional, too. *which i had on VHS because I'm ancient.*
I'm computer savvy I'll probs find a recording somewhere on the internet :D But oh yeah I tried to do all the had movements they told me to do and squeeze stress balls a lot and shit, but after 5 minutes of that you don't even feel like its worth having a working hand anymore.. but playing guitar made it so much more enjoyable, and if I was learning a song where I needed to use my thumb or index in a weird way I would just do it and I didn't even care about the pain. It was fantastic I hadn't even touched a guitar in like 5 years before my injury and now I play every day
"you won't be able to play the riff if you can't move your fingers to the right place fast enough" "that goes for every guitar riff" that made me laugh. you seem like a great guitar teacher. this video is actually very helpful for me as a beginner :)
That exact same lick from "For Who The Bell Tolls" kicks in at the very end of Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boots". Their influence is extremely obvious there.
Almost the same riff (the first two notes are switched). As soon as he started playing the riff, I felt Sabbath deserved an honourable mention for their influence there.
You’ve over complicated how to play Every Breath You Take. Watch any video of Andy Summers playing the song and he shifts his fingerings during the first two chords from fretting the bass notes (A and F#) to fretting the notes on the third string (G# and A, respectively). It makes it a lot easier. Barring the second fret when playing that F#m(add9) is hard as fuck and unnecessary.
When he said that its hard, I was surprised. I remember the song not be too complicated. Then I saw the way he plays it, and he definitely is making it harder than needed. It surprised me, because I am not that good at guitar and this song was not hard to learn (doing what you described)
if you play it with a capo on 2nd, you can shift fingerings to open chords too... Thing is if you want to play it barred, you should leave the bass fretted for the sustain imo.. if you play it on electric tho, presuming you play it with effects, its not so much important... it will tell on an acoustic instrument tho.. point tho, the way guy plays it in video(stacatto), theres no need for it to be barred all the way also, any decent guitarist should try to develop a stretch for a 9th chord(if you can physically reach it ofc) and get them clean
the metallica "From whom the bell tolls" part from your video, is a bit easy for me. Maybe its because i'm not as skilled as you and that's why is easier for, because you are a experimented guitar player and your tendecy is to do something but the lick commands you not to do that. Its very interesting when you are used to do something in a way and then you have to do it another way. I understand you, it has happened to me before. Thanks for your video, its awesome.
Actually if you watch Wendy play her part of Purple Rain, it’s intense on your fingers if you play the Eb portion as x681086 because you’re barring the 8th fret with your second finger and trying to arch your pinky enough to get the 10th fret. Even if you tried to fret the 8th string notes with your second and third fingers, then the pinky, it’s intense. Not only that, she has a funky F shape she only plays once in the song at the beginning THATS a stretch as it’s 135211. It’s mostly because the song was written on piano.
We play that Back in Black section completely differently. For me it's: d-----0------------------------------------ a---------4--2--4------------------------- E-0------------------3----7-5-7-6-7-7 I find the string skip makes fingering the 4-2-4 part super easy and moving up to 7 on the E makes fingering that section super easy too. The difficult part in Back in Black is nailing Angus's exact phrasing and vibrato on parts of the solo. It's more of a timing thing than a fingers thing, though.
So I'm completely self taught when it comes to guitar. I've been playing instruments my whole life and was never really all that determined to sit down and play guitar up until about 2 years ago. I thought because I know enough about music theory from my time on drums and piano that it wouldn't be THAT difficult to pick up and learn. So there were only a couple things I used when I first started. Tabs, to get ahold of how the guitar worked, and my snarkman to figure out the notes on the fretboard. From there I started learning all the various beginner songs, and some songs that I love (such as Roulette by SoaD). Here's where my problem came in. I tried using a pick the first two weeks, and found that I felt more comfortable just using my fingers. And here I am 2 years later. I still don't know how to use a pick. Everyone I know has always told me that I can't use finger style to play songs like Unholy Confessions and Snow (Hey Oh) but somehow I've been able to do it and I honestly don't know if what I've done is good or bad. I have recently tried to use the pick and teach myself to use it, but just get frustrated and throw it onto my desk. Is the pick really that integral to guitar that I should learn to use it? Or am I fine without, and have just found my unique style of playing? I honestly have no idea.
The guitarist of The Police actually plays the arpeggios in Every Breath You Take in a way that is a lot easier to play, as can be seen in live versions
Hello! For "every breath you take" I've watched them live when I was learning the song, and the index finger is moving, it's not "barre" and it's much easier. I can't play it like you anyway :)) (also, you should point out the mistake with the A add9, you said "here's the ninth" but you point out the third). Sorry for the long comment, cheers!
I don't think that's a troll at all. One of the biggest problems I have with most metal music is the fact that the lead guitarist thinks between every breath the singer takes he needs to add a lead fill. I use Opeth as the perfect example of a band that figured out that just because they're metal doesn't mean every moment of every song has to be a face melting experience. If a band figures out that simple concept they end up rounding their sound out as a more complete composition. Hell that's why the rest symbol exists in sheet music to begin with...
also the thing about snow is that its INTRO, VERSE, MAIN RIFF, VERSE before you are finally released to move on to the pre-chorus. like 2 minutes of the same thing basically. and frusciante sings backup vocals during all that. GODDAMMNIT.
I always assume every chilli peppers song with John is insanely hard (maybe even their current guitarists too I don't listen to them myself but have seen them with the current dude and he seems to be good. Doubt he 'd of got the gig if not). Haha I knew you had to be talking about back in black in the intro to it ,i always thought it was deciving since Angus is so good at guitar.
Nice one! I would add “Stiff Upper Lip” by AC/DC! 🤘🏻It’s a tricky one and I can only play it with my fingers. Never succeeded on using the pick with this one! 😆
No, only Angus plays the intro. The technique he uses is hybrid picking, the old blues guys liked to use it. Merle Travis picking is what you hear in Dust in the Wind.👍
"Crash" by Dave Matthews is surprisingly difficult. Lower frets with a large stretch, moving bass line and string skipping. After about 30 seconds my forearm is killing me.
I agree. Dave Matthews and his inverted chord fetish have embarrassed many players who thought it looked simple. The song #41 will stretch out your fingers and strain some ligaments.
Nope, I play at an expert level. I didn't say I couldn't play it, but If you are not playing a watered down version of this, it is tough. He was looking for suggestions, and I gave him one. What song do YOU think sounds easy but is not?
The last one is so true. It's actually kinda sad how true is it. Every part of my day (at everyday) I just wanna pick up the guitar and play and it's almost impossible for me not to do that. Only guitarists will understand this, all my friends don't get why I always play the guitar, and I can't explain - you need to be a guitarist to understand. Edit: it's like slow sweep picking, it sounds so easy for none guitar players but actual guitar players get how hard is it and you can't explain and even when you explain it sounds easy -"you just need to do this motion and mute the string right after that"
Snow (hey oh) is HARD! I just started to learn this song and wow... But it gives me encouragement to know i wasn't going crazy thinking i sucked all of a sudden lol
@@reigndrops4090 heck yeah man! Practice makes perfect! Some days i just lock myself in my home and practice on my guitar for 2 to 3 hours. And it may take me a week or so to learn a small portion of a song, but hey I still learn it! The awesome thing about it is, it never leaves you!
The chord based part isn't the hard part it's the strumming on the main riff that's difficult. I can get the first part then as soon as I change chord my right hand just goes nope and slows right down
I still can't play Snow perfectly lol. Its actually my dirty secret that sometimes when I'm lazy I throw a capo on the 4th and just use E A G and C to play it with little flourishes and hammer ons. If you want to get super basic you can do the same thing and just use straight chords lmao but I can't bring myself to be that cheap :P
For Whom the Bell tolls is definitely deceptively hard in places. It took me a long time to get it right, even more since I had to sing too. Still it's a cool song and it brings back memories of high school playing it live.

YES. Play “Every breath you take “. In a band Rehearsal... over and over It freaking just Hurts if you don’t have Spider leg fingers. But... that was the time that I discovered That my Technique Was good and clear I’m a guitarist.
Here in Brazil (and in my opinion) one of the rock legendary bands from here and from 90's and 2000's, is the "Charlie Brown Jr." band. An example of music which sounds cool, sounds easy but is hard to play is the song called "Lutar pelo que é meu". And the link at the end of this comment, is a sample of a a guitar lesson made by Thiago Castanho (the Guitarrist of this Band for 20 years) who is one of the most skilled guitarrists here together with Mozart Mello, Kiko Loureiro, Edu Ardanuy, Juninho Afram and others, all of them big guitarrists (I think Edu Ardanuy was Thiago's guitar teacher, but I'm not sure). So, here is the sample -> ruclips.net/video/vUZ6rFs-LqE/видео.html
I think the Back in Black riff is played straight, but just sounds like there's more going on because Angus and Malcolm are playing in unison and they drift occasionally.
Funny thing about the Every breath you take riff... That's not how Andy Summers actually plays the riff, he uses the index finger to play both the root and third of the chord shape, you just have to change your finger right before you play the note and the fluidity will still be there, thus the notes are palm muted. In the end the riff is not that big of a stretch with this trick.
My suggestion: 'licks that sound hard but are actually really f******* hard'. For licks/songs that are harder than they sound:: Led Zepplin's '10 years Gone'. It is veritable 'you pick 'em'. Hard to finger the EbDim7 at the 5th fret when I was learning for starters. But the King of sounding easy but hard to play of all songs ever written(I checked) is the part after the single note run in the third part of the intro. It sounds incredibly simple to play but it isn't. Try it you will be surprised, if you don't already know it. Starts at thirty-five seconds. ruclips.net/video/kWbO9a1_Z3U/видео.html ....aaaaaand if that wasn't enough it is in drop D, but doesn't have to be...wut?
I have very small baby hands. Was told by a friend to learn Little Wing because it’s ‘not too bad’. Thanks a lot, dude. A C chord is a killer at times. I love modified chords..
Hardest thing for a beginner guitarist - being able to confidently and properly do an F chord in standard tuning. Also power chords to stretch out those hands. To combine both of those ergh things? Smells Like Teen Spirit main riff that we all know.
That For Whom The Bell Tolls lick part...God I felt that, because I just learned that the other day and it took me at least 20 mins to not only learn it, but play it for as long as Kirk does. I got so frustrated that I had to take a break.
I was hoping Snow would be on this list! Hard to decide between that and Can't Stop. Granted, you can probably do a whole video like this just on RHCP.
There's a sneaky trick for the first chord of every breath you take. Use the same fingering as the f# chord, and on the fifth beat, move your first finger from the root note to play the 3d on the D string, then move it back at the start of the first bar.
The intro to Question! from SOAD is something to try! When I learned it I didn't realize I was over my head. Once you have the shifts down the speed is what really gets you.

I think the riff from Edgar Winter group’s “Free Ride” is particularly difficult, and thought it sounds really easy.
Why does that Snow riff make me tear up?? I mean almost every time I hear that damn song
Just saw that thumbnail that had the 2 songs I was just practicing...
Thing is if you want to play it barred, you should leave the bass fretted for the sustain imo.. if you play it on electric tho, presuming you play it with effects, its not so much important... it will tell on an acoustic instrument tho..
point tho, the way guy plays it in video(stacatto), theres no need for it to be barred all the way
also, any decent guitarist should try to develop a stretch for a 9th chord(if you can physically reach it ofc) and get them clean
Agreed. The notes are individual. They don’t ring over one another. Think really slow sweep.
Robert Goddard do you have a video of you playing in drop d? I would like to see it just because that’s what I play in for the most part
Robert Goddard This was my exact thought. Those chords sound so cool with drop D.
the metallica "From whom the bell tolls" part from your video, is a bit easy for me.
For me it's:
d-----0------------------------------------
a---------4--2--4-------------------------
E-0------------------3----7-5-7-6-7-7
I find the string skip makes fingering the 4-2-4 part super easy and moving up to 7 on the E makes fingering that section super easy too. The difficult part in Back in Black is nailing Angus's exact phrasing and vibrato on parts of the solo. It's more of a timing thing than a fingers thing, though.
When I build my house, I want a room like this: full of music instruments and gear and of course, soundproof so no one can bug me about the noise ;)
TheGreatDjoker my room would have a triangle
Every string you breack
Will Come and haunt you for rest of your life
SO breack so many strings you just can
So I'm completely self taught when it comes to guitar.
From this chord to discord
The guitarist of The Police actually plays the arpeggios in Every Breath You Take in a way that is a lot easier to play, as can be seen in live versions
Hello! For "every breath you take" I've watched them live when I was learning the song, and the index finger is moving, it's not "barre" and it's much easier. I can't play it like you anyway :)) (also, you should point out the mistake with the A add9, you said "here's the ninth" but you point out the third). Sorry for the long comment, cheers!
Alexandru Mîșu
It’s still hard either way
Whenever I heard snow, I had always thought about how hard the riff must’ve been to play
what's a guitar?
I don't think that's a troll at all. One of the biggest problems I have with most metal music is the fact that the lead guitarist thinks between every breath the singer takes he needs to add a lead fill. I use Opeth as the perfect example of a band that figured out that just because they're metal doesn't mean every moment of every song has to be a face melting experience. If a band figures out that simple concept they end up rounding their sound out as a more complete composition. Hell that's why the rest symbol exists in sheet music to begin with...
Sheet what? Is that a euphemism for farting in bed?
Juvenile and in poor taste? Of course I am.
also the thing about snow is that its INTRO, VERSE, MAIN RIFF, VERSE before you are finally released to move on to the pre-chorus. like 2 minutes of the same thing basically.
and frusciante sings backup vocals during all that. GODDAMMNIT.
Sure hope smoke on the water is on this list
Every breathe you take is ridiculous!
every step you take sucks! 😢😬
Message in a Bottle, same kind of chords but much harder rhythm
I’m a drummer, but I kinda want to start learning guitar just because of Snow (Hey oh). I love that song so much.
Danny Stark he’s really good but he’s no frusciante
Merle Travis picking is what you hear in Dust in the Wind.👍
fingerstyle>picktrums-every time...I only own three now, I haven't lost one in a while because. NEVER use them...
But "Crash" isn't a good sonf
Sounds like you're holding your guitar wrong
Nope, I play at an expert level. I didn't say I couldn't play it, but If you are not playing a watered down version of this, it is tough. He was looking for suggestions, and I gave him one. What song do YOU think sounds easy but is not?
bbop aloobop whatever
Mat Baker same but I’ve been practicing it for the past 3 months and I’ve just started to get to the point where you can tell it’s snow
Mat Baker yeah but maybe it will take you a week to learn the bridge but it’s gonna take you a little longer for that wrist-killing riff
@@reigndrops4090 same man
The chord based part isn't the hard part it's the strumming on the main riff that's difficult.
Add every Jim Croce song to this list
For Whom the Bell tolls is definitely deceptively hard in places. It took me a long time to get it right, even more since I had to sing too. Still it's a cool song and it brings back memories of high school playing it live.
ive been practicing snow hey oh for a week, and my ring and little finger dexterity has noticably increased. good riff for anynone to practice ( im really d level guitar player )
Snow is the hardest riff I ever learned on Guitar.
Thanx man, I finally got to figure out Snow :) I think keeping the rythm in this part is somewhat challenging also, practicing it with a metronome helped.
12:26: “This is the hardest thing to play” *Home Depot add*
Put the video on the end wait for the repeat button press it the video will restart no adds
YES. Play “Every breath you take “.
In a band
Rehearsal... over and over
It freaking just Hurts if you don’t have
Spider leg fingers.
But... that was the time that I discovered
That my Technique
Was good and clear
I’m a guitarist.
Jogar e Tocar é Arte mad props for mentioning juninho... definitely one of the most underrated guitarists out there
Keep up the good work I love ur videos great to watch before school and work.
MRSAVAGE -56 and before playing guitar as well?
I think the Back in Black riff is played straight, but just sounds like there's more going on because Angus and Malcolm are playing in unison and they drift occasionally.
Can you add more delay please?😀
Like that it sounds super great, i love how it sounds, i hope i could make a sound lile this.
Its reverb
Reverb dude
@@ilijatufekcic8263 it's actually both
Nobody ever thought Snow was easy? To take things up a level, John sings over the riff. Holy...
“new guitar because we’re getting a little dirty”
My suggestion: 'licks that sound hard but are actually really f******* hard'.
For licks/songs that are harder than they sound:: Led Zepplin's '10 years Gone'. It is veritable 'you pick 'em'.
Hard to finger the EbDim7 at the 5th fret when I was learning for starters.
But the King of sounding easy but hard to play of all songs ever written(I checked) is the part after the single note run in the third part of the intro. It sounds incredibly simple to play but it isn't. Try it you will be surprised, if you don't already know it. Starts at thirty-five seconds.

....aaaaaand if that wasn't enough it is in drop D, but doesn't have to be...wut?
Purple Rain
Painis Cupcake Bingo
I must attempt it now. I love Prince, but don't know any of his stuff.
Guitar Memoir Cliffs of Dover
I'm a music major and I don't really care to hear about all of the theory stiff but I think it's awesome you are introducing people to theory
Backing guitars to always with me always with you by Satriani.
I have very small baby hands. Was told by a friend to learn Little Wing because it’s ‘not too bad’. Thanks a lot, dude. A C chord is a killer at times. I love modified chords..
Just add every Sting/The Police song that you can find.
Hardest thing for a beginner guitarist - being able to confidently and properly do an F chord in standard tuning. Also power chords to stretch out those hands. To combine both of those ergh things? Smells Like Teen Spirit main riff that we all know.
5:57 Tyler flicks his guitar off
Not really saying tear in heaven is a super difficult song to play but I think it’s harder than it sounds.
Yea because you start crying half way thru it.
Literally the song I was trying to learn before watching this vid and Im only a beginner. Its hard but I enjoy it
whenever i play every breath you take i just capo the 2nd fret it saves your fingers
The algorithm is really putting i. Work for you, your videos have been at the top of my recommended a couple weeks now
I like how he always says his hand hurts. I literally dislocated my thumb from playing double bass so much.
The last one hit deep...
That For Whom The Bell Tolls lick part...God I felt that, because I just learned that the other day and it took me at least 20 mins to not only learn it, but play it for as long as Kirk does. I got so frustrated that I had to take a break.
Thumbnail got me Every Breath You Take is super hard especially on my acoustic with super high action
The smiths -this charming man ! Not easy at all
Also not a good song
I didn't say if it's a good or a bad song ... I said that this song not easy at all to play
@@docsavage8640 That song alone is better than every other song on this. Just saying.
Not a good song, a great one
Johnny Marr is one of the most underrated guitarists of the last 50 years. What seems simple is anything but. Def in my top 10.
Message in a bottle. Another simple riff with insane stretch
I think Kirk Hammett actually down picked that riff...not sure tho, anyway, great vid!
He used to down pick it. not sure when he changed but in resent shows like 2017 he was alternate picking.
Don't worry, if your name is not Hetfield, nobody will notice...
