Aw that was aweful, really felt for you. You are such a lovely lovely couple and at the end of the day you were being kind and helpful which most people on the canals are. As a yogurt Pot owner we tend to get abuse from nbs who have no understanding of handling a different type of boat. My 18ft cruiser has a 25hp engine which is too powerful for chugging along the canals but I need it to get up the Trent when it's fast flowing, so even on low revs it can churn the water a bit and a small craft like mine doesn't steer well at very slow speed. I have a speed app on the boat as a guide so I can keep below 4mph but I have been shouted at a few times, but once some one starts swearing I switch off and let em rant. Take care guys I think you are great.
I had that time or 2, a friend of mine had that from a fisherman he was running at tick over as well. He just opened up the throttles to show how much wash could be generated. Last we saw he was running like the wind up the bank with his gear, 3/4 on the plane tends to create a little wash :D
I've been CC for 16 months now and it's great to show life how it is on the canals. Not met Mr Angry yet but best thing to do is smile and wave as you potter along. I have met boaters who dont follow good etiquette, especially when moored up and just as you are untying lines, they race to untie theirs to get to first lock before you. Makes me smile, thinking they have not adopted canal time yet. 🤗🤗🤗

Fortunately for him, he picked the right people that wouldn't moor up and pummel him. Hi, Peeps are strange, and love a shout, I find the best is to look at them, cup a hand round one ear trying to hear what they say, then look at my watch and shout back 'half pat two' ............ sometimes I add a loosely clenched fist making vertical movements...........have fun. PS if you really want to wind them up, blow a kiss at them.
You both handled that situation very well ,you showed a lot of restraint ,and that takes a lot of strength not get drawn in to that, if you had taken his road it would have escalated, where their are people you will always get one like him, love you both, and take care.
You'll always get the occasional tosser in any walk of life. There are a lot of people on narrowboats who seem very eager to shout at others, especially if they feel their boat moving slightly as you go past. They might be better off in a caravan.
These incidents and angry people are everywhere. It is just occasionally our turn to accept the twist of fate that brings us face to face with them/it. On the roads, people who would never confront you face to face, indulge themselves in road rage frequently. I've had a similar experience myself! (One in nearly around 60 years of boating, so not bad!) Travelling through the moorings at the end of the Stourbridge arm, at tick over, which I've adjusted down on the governor, to minimize speed, so couldn't go slower, and the extremely rude man from the boatyard, can screaming along the wharf shouting about speeding. With 2 or 3 boats moored abreast, there's bound to be a little movement on the outer boat but he thought I should take the boat out of gear and drift past! Didn't seem to understand the problem of steering when out of gear!! I’m afraid to say my reply was in similar language to his comments!!🤭 Sharnt be going back there again!!🙁
I have to agree, the older I get the less I feel the need to react. Can you imagine the reaction you would have gotten if you had just smiled and waved? The rage would have gone viral lol. Keep up the good work, waiting for next vid. Pete.
You're so laid back it's wonderful. Isn't it frustrating when people won't listen and prefer to talk over you rather than consider that they might have mis interpreted the situation. I understand hoe the frustration gets inside your body and can fester.
As an ex narrowboater I sympathise. Although these instances are rare they are non the less frustrating. Just needed his teeth rearranging . Great videos. Enjoy your life. This might help, might not, but here goes... I used to work at a group home for autistic boys. Many many times when taking them shopping we would see people obviously not handicapped using the special parking spots forcing us to park in harder places to accommodate our charges. With this backset, one Christmas we were taking the boys shopping and as we approached the last handicapped parking space a small sedan with no handicapped sticker/plate, etc. zoomed in and took it. We went to the rear of the lot where cars were parked very tightly and struggled to get our boys out of the van without damaging surrounding vehicles. I was incensed over the incident and made several derogatory comments about it as we struggled and walked the long distance to the store entrance. As we approached the sedan parked in the spot we had wanted I noticed a mother placing her daughter in a wheelchair and immediately felt very very small. I learned that day that we can not know the entirety of facts in a given circumstance and it is best to reserve our worst take on peoples intentions.
Dave Willard Thanks, all comments help👍.I feel that my angry man would have still shouted at the mother for not displaying her disability badge. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment

I spent a summer in England in 2013 and I did two weeks on a narrow boat. Some of the rudest people I met unfortunately were on the canal. Everyone else was lovely
im not a boater myself but spend lots of time fishing on the canals and must say 99% of the people i see on boats are nice friendly people like yourself. i have been unfortunate enough to meet the other 1% in the past though and once had a guy threaten to throw me and all my gear in the canal!
Being an avid fan of the late, great George Carlin, he sums it up best with one of his quotes: "Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience," You handled his abuse perfectly. As you've already deduced there was no reasoning with him or getting a word in edgeways. In situations like that, smile and move on. My genuine hope is that you're right, he's a good guy who was having a bad day. As it's June 2020 now, hopefully he's calmed down by now. Well, hopefully he has.
As I'm a VLK I would say you will always get one. Please do not let things like this spoil you cruising they are very few and far between. Thanks for the vlog
Way to not escalate. You are a better man than myself. Good on ya. It would have been en entirely different story if it had been me the bully was trying to holler down. JS - being American has its advantages - not many mind you, but this is one particular situation where they would have come in handy. Keep on keeping on, you two. My wife and I love ya and are in the beginning stages of panning a summer on the canals in few years. Hope to see ya there!
Jeremy Wilkerson Thank you, we have met quite a few Americans this year on hire boats. Hope when you guys have your Narrowboat holiday it is idyllic and incident free👍
As you say, we have all come across angry people in public who can’t or won’t be reasoned with. We may even have been that person on occasion! 😄We don’t know what has happened before you arrived on the scene to put him in such a bad mood. He has got the wrong end of the barge pole and you have got the sticky end. Not your fault! The roads are full of these angry characters. Best not to respond to them, except to wonder why they are quite so desperate to have a heart attack. Keep smiling!
Blimey, You can't even get away from these knuckle draggers on the canals it seems. Normally they're on the road. I think you did amazing keeping your cool. I think I'd have treated him to a bit of his own abuse and put him straight.
He's on holiday with his family and not getting his leg over mate lol, great content as always guys, your better than me, I would of gone back and put him in the blooming cut lol but that's just me, iv lived in London to long, take care guys.
I've just subscribed to your blog as interested in life on the canals. So quite dismayed to see you also have tossers along the way in that walk of life too. You did the right thing not arguing. It just adds fuel to the fire when you have idiots like him screaming at the top of their lungs. I might have been inclined to throw a winding handle at him personally! Probably not the best idea. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos.
Mr Asb-oater probably does this a lot.... less so if you were stood on the tow path.... You may find he lives on the canal to avoid past confrontation. He will probably suffer a stress related incident soon 😵 Don’t let his uniquely unbalanced display put you off..... Carry On !! 🙂🇬🇧
Your too nice. Making excuses for him when really there aren’t any. The only thing you need to do is feel sorry for him if his life makes him so angry that he treats another human being like that and also feel sorry for whoever has to live with him. Chin up and take care. Xx
I think it's safe to assume that's his default setting 🤬 and had nothing to do with you at all. So sorry a lovely couple like yourselves had to be at the receiving end of that 😔 thankfully he is one in a million 🚫as are you two 💑 enjoy your lovely life and don't let anyone tell you otherwise ❤
It was not your fault in anyway, you were just being considerate towards the following narrowboat. That man probably goes through life with an inferiority complex. Karma will get sort him out at some point in his life. Keep smiling😊😊😀. I love your videos
Don't fell bad, I had that happen every day here in the U.S.A. I drove what you call a lorry ( tractor/trailer) here for over 35 years. Dennis from Delaware U.S.A
Firstly Sticks & Stones etc etc. As I’ve become older, I now just smile. I attempt reasoning & continue to smile. Years ago, If the assailant continued verbally abusing my wife and or me, I would quietly & simply drop them. To be honest he was a bit lardy, so you did the right thing. Just smile & make a nice cup of Tea, Yorkshire preferably! By the way, what does TWAT/Tosser actually mean? 😊😊
totally agree with the smile and cup of tea part, otherwise I would have ended up just as wound up as that poor chap. Not quite sure of the Oxford dictionary definitions of his expletives 😂😂
The trouble is in today’s sad society none of us know what someone else has taken, whether that be prescription medicine or self medication. Let us hope that now you have provided that person with his 5 seconds of world wide fame if you do ever pass one another in the future he will feel sufficiently ashamed of himself and offer you his sincere and profuse apologies! One can only live in hope. 💐💐

When I was a kid, Mr Angry from Purley used to be on the radio, wonder if they are related? Needs an anger management course, methinks !
Wow, I remember mr Angry, on the Steve wright show, must have been 30 years ago because my eldest was a baby and she's 34 now
If you two lovely people are ever going onto the chesterfield canal, give me a shout, you are welcome to use our mooring with free electric and the water tap is within a hose length away. The canal is a beautiful stretch of waterway, that can be completed in 7 days or 7 months, no stress here.
Kind regards Martin & Di
Marty 086 Wow, thanks for your kind offer, I will have to try and remember that when we eventually get that way👍
@@welldeckdiaries5610 You are more than welcome, it's no problem at all. We only use the mooring from about Nov till March depending on the ice, and stoppages.
I can't post my tel number on here, but my boat with me and my Dear wife is pictured on Google images.
Nb Florence. So ask the Lock keeper when you get in off the Trent, he knows us.
All the very Best.
P. S
The Trent is Not difficult, just heed the info from the Lock Keeper at Cromwell.
Cheers
Martin and Di
You showed your courtesy . He showed his Ignorance sorted .lol
👍
Don't worry about it mate, we have a boat in Rippon sometimes the unexpected will happen, just concentrate on being happy can't please them all 🙏just pray for him.
will do 👍
Not the sort of person you want to be around! Indeed a very Mr. Angry. Such a shame.
Like we said, an isolated incident
I love it when angry people have a good rant, you should have laughed that would have
probably sent him purple faced 😡
He would of had an aneurism
I spent a summer in England in 2013 and I did two weeks on a narrow boat. Some of the rudest people I met unfortunately were on the canal. Everyone else was lovely
Sorry to hear that
I would take no notice of him he obviously didn't get a bit the night before you two are such nice people he doesn't even deserve the airtime.
ha ha 😂, never thought of that one👍
im not a boater myself but spend lots of time fishing on the canals and must say 99% of the people i see on boats are nice friendly people like yourself. i have been unfortunate enough to meet the other 1% in the past though and once had a guy threaten to throw me and all my gear in the canal!
wow
Haha what a bell end .should have reversed back and watch him run
.🤣😂
Being an avid fan of the late, great George Carlin, he sums it up best with one of his quotes:
"Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience,"
You handled his abuse perfectly. As you've already deduced there was no reasoning with him or getting a word in edgeways. In situations like that, smile and move on. My genuine hope is that you're right, he's a good guy who was having a bad day. As it's June 2020 now, hopefully he's calmed down by now. Well, hopefully he has.
Costas very well said, and I’m sure he has calmed down by now 😁
"I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND I DON'T WANT TO KNOW, I JUST WANT TO YELL AND SCREAM AT YOU WITHOUT ANY EXPLAINING ON YOUR BEHALF!!!!!!!"
🤣😂
My husband and I are going to be calling each other the T words for the next week and laughing.
Its Debbies fav word for me at the moment
Well done for keeping yourselves cool. He's an energy vampire, Karma will kick back 10 fold. I just think you guys are great. Keep the vlogs coming. 💜
Thanks
A display of madness on the tow path lol nice piece of editing.
👍
Thankfully people like that are few and far between. They always have a limited vocabulary. The good far outweighs the bad. Keep smiling.
😁
I think Mr Angry may have picked the wrong lifestyle with that much anger inside him.
My sentiments exactly
As I'm a VLK I would say you will always get one. Please do not let things like this spoil you cruising they are very few and far between. Thanks for the vlog
VLK ? now I'm curious
Volunteer lock keeper
Howard Platt So obvious now you say it
That guy is lucky he did not meet my wife. She would have a few choice words for him. You guys did well.
😂🤣
Haha, we have that every weekend running a bar, looking forward to it on the canal.. sooth them lol
Wow 😮
I do hate the sticky end of a pole😂, I would have loved to taken his blood pressure reading
OOO I see you have your Christmas lights up!
👍
Such a shame...must be awful to be living in his skin to be so angry...good on you for keeping cool.
only just kept my cool😁
Blimey, You can't even get away from these knuckle draggers on the canals it seems. Normally they're on the road. I think you did amazing keeping your cool. I think I'd have treated him to a bit of his own abuse and put him straight.
Luckily these are isolated cases
In every hobby/pastime there's that one guy who has to act like a dement crossing guard.
very true
God bless yous keep on smiling keep the faith chill is the way to go well done❤🏴👍
Thanks ❤️
He's on holiday with his family and not getting his leg over mate lol, great content as always guys, your better than me, I would of gone back and put him in the blooming cut lol but that's just me, iv lived in London to long, take care guys.
db d Ha Ha, never thought of that one
You’re too polite! He would have been swimming if that been me !
Im getting soft in my old age😂
I've just subscribed to your blog as interested in life on the canals. So quite dismayed to see you also have tossers along the way in that walk of life too. You did the right thing not arguing. It just adds fuel to the fire when you have idiots like him screaming at the top of their lungs. I might have been inclined to throw a winding handle at him personally! Probably not the best idea. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos.
Phizzyt Thanks, at least this is the only bad incident in 12 months of cruising👍
Mr Asb-oater probably does this a lot.... less so if you were stood on the tow path....
You may find he lives on the canal to avoid past confrontation. He will probably suffer a stress related incident soon 😵
Don’t let his uniquely unbalanced display put you off..... Carry On !! 🙂🇬🇧
Its water under the bridge now 👍
He probably acts the same way on the motorway. Thinks the world revolves around him and everyone else needs to stay out his way.
Glad I don't have to negotiate motorways anymore
What an idiot! Shame you had to go through that, but to be honest you probably did him a favour - he looked like he could do with the exercise 🤣
He certainly had a cardiac workout
Your too nice. Making excuses for him when really there aren’t any. The only thing you need to do is feel sorry for him if his life makes him so angry that he treats another human being like that and also feel sorry for whoever has to live with him. Chin up and take care. Xx
I have said I hope what troubles he has in in life to make him so angry have been resolved
We have recovered by the morning and now look back on it and smile
It was not your fault in anyway, you were just being considerate towards the following narrowboat. That man probably goes through life with an inferiority complex. Karma will get sort him out at some point in his life. Keep smiling😊😊😀. I love your videos
Just hope whatever problems he has to make him so angry have been sorted out
Don't fell bad, I had that happen every day here in the U.S.A. I drove what you call a lorry ( tractor/trailer) here for over 35 years. Dennis from Delaware U.S.A
Feel sorry for Lorry drivers, without them there would be nothing in the what you call stores (shops) for us to buy👍
Ranting and screaming like that would probably put some boaters of witch most probably has thankfully it's just a tiny minority at the moment....😀😀😀
The guy shouting and screaming defines the term Twat/Tosser.
Fingers crossed
He probably needs a mooring pin to the back of the head!
Unfortunately if he picks the wrong person, that might happen
Your a lot more restrained than I Gungahlin I would have let rip, these a.h are nothing but bullys once they get away with it they wont stop.I once had a joker try to anchor on my anchor so he could fish the same spot,he didn't last more than a few seconds .These bastards are all over the world and they think they don't have to answer to anyone well I've got bad news for them.be safe and good boating from western Australia👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
