  • In my opinion one of the best value vehicle on the market today. Especially in the family friendly, 4 door SUV category. Let me know what you think beats it!

My dad had a '99 4.0 4AT that I bought off him for my first car (gave it back to him because I didn't want to wreck it off road, it was in mint condition). Loved that thing. He sold it after putting another 100k because the trans was starting to shift hard. Current owner is still driving it on the same transmission. I would definitely buy another 1st or 2nd gen if I look for a 4x4 trail rig.

What a find, that's a gem! It is so difficult to find a first gen Explorer or Ranger in the NE. Miss my '87 ranger every Fall and Winter.....

thats a steal for $2000. manual / manual explorer has to be pretty rare! i also have only owned manuals for 25 years of driving. i have a couple 90's f150's with 300-6 in 4x4, its my go to half ton truck.
do these have the ttb front end?

When I was looking for a new camping rig I looked at a second gen V8 Explorer, I wanted the V8 because it has the more reliable auto trans than the V6 but for some reason Ford made the V8 awd only, makes no sense. I definitely would of bought an Explorer for a beater camping rig but no 2 speed transfer case made me look elsewhere.

Explorers definitely are overlooked I believe.
Would definitely be my first pick when it would come to a budget, all around rig!

Talk about rare with the 5sp and manual transfer case. Beast!

I’ve never seen one with a manual transfer case, even on the 2 door models. Was it swapped in? I wish I could find one like that. Good choice on the Ranger grille, I hate the Explorer grilles too.

I'm driving a 92 explorer that is even cleaner than this one with a 3 inch lift. Head liner is mint. I do wish that mine was manual transfer case though. While I do like manual transmission for the road, I would rather stick to my auto trans for off road. Some of the hills I've climbed would be a nightmare with a manual trans. I've been so inclined that windshield washer fluid was leaking out onto my windshield and all i could see was the sky. It can climb like a mountain goat in 4 low.

That's a nice Mazda you got there 😂 I highly doubt Ford could of done the suspension geometry themselves in the late 80s. Thank goodness they took over the B series chassis

Twin Ttraction beam came right out of the 1980 full sized trucks. Twin I beam (2wd models) came from the mid 60s f100 and as of 2024 is still in use. This and the ranger are 100% Ford. B series became badge swapped rangers. The Ford courier was a Mazda pickup but ranger replaced it for 1981-ish

I'd consider anything without a carburetor modern it's new enough you can't fix it without a computer but old enough it's not reliable the only new but old company I'd buy from is Toyota a 10 year old with 150,000 miles is just getting broken in but Americans they are just breaking plus ford's no way there's some specialty tool for everything and they been making car's for 100+ years and still haven't gotten it right
