Love it! My dad had a 91 Eddie Bauer some years ago, and I got myself a 93 XLT with the manual transmission and I couldn't be happier. Please keep updates on the truck! It's great to have someone doing things that we can learn on our projects too!
My dad had a '99 4.0 4AT that I bought off him for my first car (gave it back to him because I didn't want to wreck it off road, it was in mint condition). Loved that thing. He sold it after putting another 100k because the trans was starting to shift hard. Current owner is still driving it on the same transmission. I would definitely buy another 1st or 2nd gen if I look for a 4x4 trail rig.
I have had my 91 for over 21 years. Same 4 door and exterior color as yours but with the tan interior. I bought it when I lived in Washington for $1100 with 150K miles and it now I live in Arizona and it has 425K miles on the original 4.0 OHV that has never been out of the engine bay. I have been using this as a daily for years. 6" lift and 33" tires will take you anywhere a Jeep with $40K worth of modifications will go and even some places the Jeep can't go. I don't feel it is an issue, but I have personally have had to rebuild the A4LD transmission 2 times now.
When I was looking for a new camping rig I looked at a second gen V8 Explorer, I wanted the V8 because it has the more reliable auto trans than the V6 but for some reason Ford made the V8 awd only, makes no sense. I definitely would of bought an Explorer for a beater camping rig but no 2 speed transfer case made me look elsewhere.
Just a quick note.. all 1994 explorer models had egr added as well as sequential fuel injection.. this was to solve the spark knock the 4.0 inherently has. (It really didnt help)
I daily my 95 5.0 5 speed Mustang with some tasteful mods in the summer. An my 91 4x4 5 speed Explorer in the winter in Utah stock with newer brakes shocks an tires clutch. I can afford newer vehicles but having cheaper insurance an no payments with comfortable reliable vehicles is awesome! lol 😂 Plus I can find parts for both cheap!
I'm driving a 92 explorer that is even cleaner than this one with a 3 inch lift. Head liner is mint. I do wish that mine was manual transfer case though. While I do like manual transmission for the road, I would rather stick to my auto trans for off road. Some of the hills I've climbed would be a nightmare with a manual trans. I've been so inclined that windshield washer fluid was leaking out onto my windshield and all i could see was the sky. It can climb like a mountain goat in 4 low.
I love these things. Been trying to find a buddy who'll do a cheap truck challenge against me for a little while now and I think this is just the type of rig I'd like to use. Maybe controversial a little bit but I think these are better than Jeep XJs. Now how rare is that lever shifted transfer case in the explorer? I've seen 5 speed explorers pop up here and there but can't place when I've ever seen a lever shift transfer case.
They are pretty uncommon to have the manual transfer case, but not impossible to find. I looked at 2 others in the last year, they just were not clean enough for what we wanted!
Beautiful car but aren't you concerned about saftey hauling your family around in there? Saftey tech has come along way in 30 years. Even the difference between the mid 90s and mid 2000s was pretty big. Improvements in crumple zones and airbags. If your kid is an infant and you invest in a quality car seat then maybe its no big deal but I would be nervous putting any kid over the age of like 5 in that car for a long road trip.
thats a steal for $2000. manual / manual explorer has to be pretty rare! i also have only owned manuals for 25 years of driving. i have a couple 90's f150's with 300-6 in 4x4, its my go to half ton truck. do these have the ttb front end?
@@HighDesertDerelict so its basically a ranger in every meaningful way, just like the bronco was an f150. do you know if the explorer followed the ranger for the next generations, or did it diverge? i know they eventually ended up with independent rear suspension. i wonder if it shares the transmission / tcase with the f150. i know the rangers have had some spotty reliability though the years, and ive heard the same about explorers, but ive always been intrested to know more and mabey know what to look for / good years, especially because the broncos are getting so expensive. i know a fair amount about 80's and 90's f150's because ive had a few. I had a 91 2wd ranger that wasn't great, and it probably soured my opinion.
I’ve never seen one with a manual transfer case, even on the 2 door models. Was it swapped in? I wish I could find one like that. Good choice on the Ranger grille, I hate the Explorer grilles too.
That's a nice Mazda you got there 😂 I highly doubt Ford could of done the suspension geometry themselves in the late 80s. Thank goodness they took over the B series chassis
Twin Ttraction beam came right out of the 1980 full sized trucks. Twin I beam (2wd models) came from the mid 60s f100 and as of 2024 is still in use. This and the ranger are 100% Ford. B series became badge swapped rangers. The Ford courier was a Mazda pickup but ranger replaced it for 1981-ish
I'd consider anything without a carburetor modern it's new enough you can't fix it without a computer but old enough it's not reliable the only new but old company I'd buy from is Toyota a 10 year old with 150,000 miles is just getting broken in but Americans they are just breaking plus ford's no way there's some specialty tool for everything and they been making car's for 100+ years and still haven't gotten it right

That’s the PERFECT first gen Explorer! Wow!
What a find, that's a gem! It is so difficult to find a first gen Explorer or Ranger in the NE. Miss my '87 ranger every Fall and Winter.....
Thats a clean machine!!!
Talk about rare with the 5sp and manual transfer case. Beast!
about 3 months in on my 93 eddie baurer edition

Explorers definitely are overlooked I believe.
Would definitely be my first pick when it would come to a budget, all around rig!

Do you still have your red ranger?

Do you have any suggestions on one that has had its window tracks taken out on the front doors, because my windows don‘t work because of that.
My best advice would be to find another explorer to get the parts from that you need. These explorers are common in junkyards near me.
@ alright, thank you for the reply!

The ford 300 is my favorite engine! Yes these have the Dana 35 TTB front axle.

Firestone exploding tires 💥
Love manual transmissions!
Just don't try to take a turn....

it’s hilarious to hear you call the most uniquely ford suspension ever made a mazda parts bin special lmao
