Actually Arri does have kinda computational DR in the sense that it has a separate photosite readout in the sensor for just capturing the highlights info and a separate photosite readout that just capture the mids and shadows which then gets stiched up into a 16 bit file image that's why you get those crazy highlight rolls offs, its called a dual gain architecture something that the Canon C70 has adopted as well.

For the difference in price I don’t think that matters at all. Most just want good video quality and not trying to film the next blockbuster movie. Just simple RUclips videos.
Always love seeing the bro collab. When I started my photo/video journey, it was all around nerding out with my bros and trying to figure out what the hell aperture actually did before social media and RUclips was ever a thing. :)
This goes to show that color grading plays a big role in the "cinematic" look because some of these color graded iphone footage I've mistaken for ARRI footage.
Just as I’ve bought a dedicated camera. Honestly tho, on RUclips it’s difficult but the level of detail on even my little dedicated Sony ZV E10 (that I bought on your recommendation and am happy with) is just much more crisp and clear than any phone is going to achieve. Sometimes it takes pixel peeping but still. It’s kinda like using a 60hz phone vs a 120hz phone. Some people can’t even notice a difference but those who do-they REALLY do.
Sony ZV 10 destroys iPhone cinematic mode by a mile. iPhones aren't good at reproducing natural Bokeh effect artificially. It's absurd people are recommending a phone to filmmakers instead of dedicated cameras. Even $600 Sony EV 10 destroys iPhones on every category by a mile.
@@awesomestuff2496 right? Like yeah the phone is absolutely impressive for what it is but it is absolutely not a substitute for a whole camera. Like I might use the iPhone for a shot in a video where a camera simply couldn’t fit, such as like gliding through ladder rungs or pushing through columns of a handrail bannister, but there’s no way I could recommend to someone who wants a camera to “just use your iPhone”. It simply doesn’t compare.
@@Shot4ShotPhoto YUP exactly. But all these so called filmmakers nowadays recommend getting iPhone instead of a dedicated cameras. These filmmakers think iphones destroy entry level mirrorless cameras when in reality it's no where close.
It's like pitting a Lamborghini against a Corolla in a race to the grocery store; sure, they'll both get the job done, but you're not really tapping into what makes the Lamborghini extraordinary.
The fact that this is even comparable is incredible, and a strong testament to just how spoiled we are as creators nowadays. Any serious filmmaker that wants to make money will add one of these phones to their arsenal right next to the Arri.
Hey Matii! -I'm also a almost begginer cinematographer, and i've been experimenting with footage and videos these months. I've learnt a lot of stuff back in, such as, lenses, focal length, bokeh and more stuff. It's been a large journey till this day but i'm still keeping up. I'm not also interested into filmmaking career, i also want to study optics. And that's why i'm really in to this world. And i tell you, i can spot the difference, let me tell you. -I can say (with all my skills that i've learnt for the past months) i can spot the difference. One of the differences that i see is with the color. Arri has lie a more advanced color than the iPhone, but still both of them are good in that. Also because the Arri has more colors going on (16 bit) than the iPhone. -Another difference i can spot is the Bokeh. I know both have already lenses with the same adjustments in them, but i can really see the bokeh on him. Arri's one, is far cleaner and smoother than iPhone one. I can notice this because i'm a iPhone user, and i've been using it's good camera, and i've seen it's Bokeh many times. So yeah. -I might be wrong in this one but, Arri has more quality than the iPhone, but in this situation, you might have set that in to the same quality as the iPhone, but yeah. That's pretty much it. I love your videos man, this is real content for me! Thanks.
It’s crazy, even as a filmmaker it was nearly impossible to tell on the first watch, if you don’t look up closely. As watching it on a smartphone in vertical mode has not much sceeenspace and it’s also a fast editing style. For sure if you want to see it you will find some feature that will tell you which is which especially in challenging shots. But as it’s daytime with good light the iPhone is performing very well. It’s absolutely mind blowing how well they’re matching for a format like RUclips or social media in general. 🙌🏾 What a fun matchup. Even tho speaking of shooting logistics the iPhone is for sure no competitor for an ARRI. But the specific marked phone cameras are targeting its mind blowing powerful.
That wasn't silly - that was one of the best objective bits of advice I have heard for years: You have to learn your craft and the iPhone makes that possible. It isn't a competitor to the ultra-high-end beasts, but rather, a really good route to them. You are dead right. And twinned with things like the Blackmagic Camera App (free) and an external SSD, it really does open up so many possibilities for learning the craft.
Similar problem: Can you feel the speed difference between Kia Rio and La Ferrari? In heavy city traffic are both near identic fast. :D But when you go to the race track - the difference is brutal. Some here. Comparison works only if you reduce conditions to level optimal for the weaker equipment.
the only one I could truly tell was the shot where your finger shows in the left corner of the screen, that was the iphone for sure. looking back at it again you can tell for sure on a few but by color alone it stacks up pretty well.
Love this. Smash them together and you prove that, unless pixel peeping, with long shots, you can't tell. Another "tell" is that the phone continually adjusts the color science in the shot.
As someone who makes a lot of wild videos, I’m a big fan of the iPhone. No color grading, and when paired with a good microphone the iPhone is 90% correct 100% of the time. My Sony cameras require some skill that I am slowly learning, but have occasionally left me with poor filmed to low skill level. So, if I need to make sure I get it right in one take, it’s the iPhone.
One of my friend bought a iPhone 15 and they don't have any idea about stuff like this but we're in a band together and this is absurdly the absolute best gear purchase ever. I can't wait to rig this thing up and shoot some mind blowing vids!!!
As someone with not a lot of camera experience/knowledge, I really couldn't tell the difference at first watch. I think professionals can easily integrate iPhone video into their work now without most of the population noticing at all.
The phone cuts SUPER well. A lot of affordable cameras can produce a good REC709 video look now. I can't tell the difference between a lot of these shots. I wonder how much work would it take to produce a Deakins kind of look with the phone that would hold up on the big screen? If it's even possible at all.
I think you nailed it, that isn't isn't comparing bad to good, but anymore it is comparing good to really good. In the whole clips sequence I just kept thinking, no one outside of technical folks would know the difference, especially with such closely matched color. A few gimmies on dynamic range, DOF, and the like. But again, not that the iPhone is bad, it isn't. The Arri is just really that good. Definitely could see an iPhone as an enter camera, frequent b-roll or action type cam. etc.
The craziest part is at 5:22 when he was saying "The Arri looks so much better in every single way" in my head I was like "yeah it is obvious"-then I look down and realize my eye was gravitating to the Iphone💀 I think the main thing here is Image quality is more and more accessible. It is comparing apples and oranges where you take a bite of either and it is juicy and delicious. The difference is the usability, the adaptability, and reliability of a professional camera. Also, I am sure if a colorist graded both sets of footage the difference would be massively more obvious than rec 709 luts
The wide angle iPhone shots are easily distinguishable from any cinema camera because the lack of DOF and the sharpness. But the tight close ups are a bit difficult to tell especially when viewing in a phone. All in all a great comparison and good for thought
In this times, when 90 percent of people use their mobile devices to watch youtube - it's almost no difference 🙂 It chenges when you want shoot film for bigger screen. Funny comparision - I've liked it! ❤
For real. I stopped watching this video on my phone just to move to my macbook to try to see the actual differences. Its absolutely wild. No chance I would notice any of this if it was a regular video about something else, the iphone footage is that good.
This is absolutely crazy! Almost makes me regret purchasing my sony a7iv lol. But i was just wondering, was this shot on the pro or pro max? Are there no other differences on the cameras than the telephoto lens?
The reality is that most non-videographers can’t tell the difference and the most video consumptions are on the small phone or tablet form factor devices. The most important part of video consumptions these days is story telling and a small iPhone can capture most of those moments quick and easy instead of carrying an enormous professional camera around.
It was a lot easier to tell the difference with the indoor clips, however the outdoor clips were very difficult to tell the difference. I actually thought that a lot of the outdoor iPhone clips were the arri. Whereas the indoor clips were more obvious which camera was which.
I missed the angle behind feet because I saw the shaking and thought that would be the iPhone. Outside of that, I could see. The iPhone had, mostly, a phone look. The colors were good, but I am impressed.
telling if its arri or iphone is basically telling if its matti or teppo, if you know what youre looking at then yeah its easy. but every once in a while....
Amazing. I think, outside of dof and the softness of the Arri cam, without context, probably almost everyone wouldn't question whether or not it's an iphone film or something else. There are many tools that can be used to make your shots look like that of an expensive dedicated cinema cam. Imagine having pros in their respective fields (DP's, editors, Directors, colorists), with all the right tools, shooting in all the right scenarios, shoot a film without any context. I doubt most people could clearly say that it was shot on an iphone. You may have a few, but the majority of movie watching people, who don't care what you shot it on and only want to see a good film, would absolutely not know. Great shots, by the way. Thanks for the comparison and time.
The only real problem with these phones is depth of field. You can immediately tell which clip is on iPhone because the image is always flat. Xiaomi has wider aperture cameras with their Leica smartphone camera, but otherwise all phones have this problem, and this is the next challenge that will need to be solved. Until then you have to shoot in a different way with smartphones to get depth of field in some close up shots and give the illusion of that cinematic blur.
They could just put one big sensor in there and make the lenses rotateable. You wouldn't be able to change between them instantly, but imagine having a MFT sensor on a phone lol.
Awesome video! What would you recommend for some filter kits stabilizers microphones etc. Or is it a matter of looking at some of your old videos? Thank you!
Not mentioned is which camera would you want to be hiking up a mountain with or hanging out of a helicopter or riding a bicycle. There's your answer. Try to take a big camera like the Arri or even a 35mm size Sony in a public building or museum and you'd be stopped at the door. Which camera will you choose?
My issue with recommending an iPhone as a beginner camera is the fundamentals of shooting with it are different. You basically hit record and go. With a 'real' camera, you consider aperture, shutter speed and ISO, things that aren't even though about when shooting footage on a phone.
Yes but you can still learn composition, lighting, tracking, etc etc with the phone. Then you can see what you style you like and then pick are "real" camera. I will say you can get a BMPCC 4k for cheaper than the iphone max and that image cuts really well with Arri, has for years. More options are always better IMO.
Impressive phone! The only difference was when the depth of field was too good was when it was clearly the ARRI. But I appreciate that you can now take cinema like shots with the phone and editing them is a lot more flexible.
now that you said it perfect for beginner..you should compare it to beginner entry level mirrorless camera like Sony A73, Canon r7 and so on, because although its a phone at the same time..its still much more expensive compare to some beginner.. DSLR or Mirrorless.
Maybe you can only guess easily when a lens flare comes in. Expensive cameras and cinema lenses really show their quality in very difficult light conditions, but... Wow!
In close up looks nice the iPhone footages but in far angle you can notice the difference of the quality sensor that ARRI is much better, but is unbelievable how the new iPhone can get this quality with a tiny lenses.
I’m not even surprised by the results. Half of these so called “Professional Photographers” or “directors” on instagram or RUclips are complete nonsense half the time. They think buying expensive equipments will make their videos look more professional… it’s like a painter thinking buying a $1000 paint brush is going to change the fact that they don’t know the basics of painting or how to composite the colors together. Thank you for the video!!! Great comparison!!!
0:44 I believe that is a finger on the upper left of the frame. That gives the clue that it is iPhone. Btw, you can save all your videos directly to external hard drive, nvme gen4 would be a great fit for the ProRes video.
@@he.smile_ its probably the same setting that filmic pro uses that allows switching from local to global tonemapping, while not as bad, can still pulsate exposure. this is all api restricted until apple allows os modification.
Great comparison and the shots moved quickly and was hard to tell the difference in some parts. Would like to see a darker environment comparison. Either way the end user wouldn’t know the difference in this scenario.
It's the sharpening of certain textures like the beard that give it away. In wide shots with a good colour grade I think it's less easy to tell, like you would have to pause and take a look at highlight roll off or something, but when you're in close up you can see how the arri has this slightly dreamier buttery smooth image but still with all the detail, whereas the details in the phone footage look exaggerated. I imagine with a refinement of apple log, and a little bit of techno-wizardry the images could be even closer. Of course the iPhone has huge limitations as a professional tool but the reality is, if you work within those limitations, you can create great looking footage that would not look like it came from a phone. Wonder what the 16pro cameras will be like??
This is why when I ordered the phone and saw those videos, it gaves me the idea to start making videos. So that’s gonna be my beginner camera. At that video speed, I missed a few times. This is insane. The sensor is so much smaller, it fits in your pockets… Sure you see the difference, but like, except if you view something at the cinema, I would argue you could use the phone as a backup camera, for sure.
BE HONEST! How many did you get wrong???? Were you as surprised as I was?

Is this a Pro or Pro Max? It looks big.
One of these days ARRI will get colors almost as good as Fujifilm….
Yes!! Totally agree, best beginner camera for sure!
Is it bad that I thought it was a trick and the whole thing was filmed with the iPhone? 😂
😂😂😂
it shows how overpriced these pro cameras are
I'm blown away and hate to admit that I was doubting myself for quite a lot of the shots and was guessing for most of it.
Haha I think that’s most people
It's like pitting a Lamborghini against a Corolla in a race to the grocery store; sure, they'll both get the job done, but you're not really tapping into what makes the Lamborghini extraordinary.
The only ones I got right were the ones where your finger was in the shot.
Is this a 15 pro or 15 pro max?
the only one I could truly tell was the shot where your finger shows in the left corner of the screen, that was the iphone for sure. looking back at it again you can tell for sure on a few but by color alone it stacks up pretty well.
it is lovely to see teppo on Matti's channel again
Love this. Smash them together and you prove that, unless pixel peeping, with long shots, you can't tell.
Another "tell" is that the phone continually adjusts the color science in the shot.
To be honest, the iPhone is very competitive in those closeup shots since it has a lot of bokeh now.
This face shot got me.
Some ARRI shots are easy to spot, cause you missed the focus :P
Are you using the dzo anamorphics? If so will we see a review?
Definitely could see an iPhone as an enter camera, frequent b-roll or action type cam. etc.
Imagine if Apple made their own Camera 😮
@apple has entered the chat 😈
that would be a threat🤣🔥
They did in the 90s in collaboration with Kodak but that was a different Apple
I predict Apple will buy Blacknagic Design
They already have, it's got different names 11-15 pro
The fact that you did the comparison means only one thing…. iPhone is leading industry and is going places
He could've done the same comparison with the Xiaomi 13 ultra or the Samsung s23 ultra and gotten better results.
true, especially with tools like motioncam@@compteprivefr
@@compteprivefrHere comes the android fanboy 😂
@@compteprivefrin camera videos ?are you serious?everyone knws that iPhone camera are the best one available
@@Omar-kl3xp Keep dreaming lol - We got RAW video on Android and monster sensors like the IMX 989 and GN2 amongst many beasts 😊
Also, I am sure if a colorist graded both sets of footage the difference would be massively more obvious than rec 709 luts
haha exactly the same at the 5:22 comparison, I thought Arri is way better here and only then noticed it's actually the iPhone
Wow that’s crazy!! 🤯 Never thought the iPhone would compete this good, it’s really incredible how far technology has come 😍🤩
I think the big take on this comparison is the difference is not jarring - like you said. It's utterly competent to mix b-roll shots.
The wide angle iPhone shots are easily distinguishable from any cinema camera because the lack of DOF and the sharpness. But the tight close ups are a bit difficult to tell especially when viewing in a phone. All in all a great comparison and good for thought
In this times, when 90 percent of people use their mobile devices to watch youtube - it's almost no difference 🙂
It chenges when you want shoot film for bigger screen.
Funny comparision - I've liked it! ❤
Haha Yep! All part of the fun. I hope people realize they really can make the things they want with what they already have 🙌🏻
For real. I stopped watching this video on my phone just to move to my macbook to try to see the actual differences. Its absolutely wild. No chance I would notice any of this if it was a regular video about something else, the iphone footage is that good.
I stopped watching on ig reels and put the video right into my 4K TV but its still harder to say for some shots.
The thing is it’s 1400$ vs 100,000$.
It obviously a notable difference....but being able to mix without making anyone puke is a huge compliment.
The Boys Are Back!! Great to see Teppo!
It was a lot easier to tell the difference with the indoor clips, however the outdoor clips were very difficult to tell the difference. I actually thought that a lot of the outdoor iPhone clips were the arri. Whereas the indoor clips were more obvious which camera was which.
Would love to see this comparison again using the "One LUT" with the iPhone footage.
I was so confused at the beginning 😂 I was like am I watching 2 versions of him ? 😂😂
Hahaha 😂
Quick edits and RUclips compression actually keep it from being so clear-cut.
One of the best giveaways is the thumb in front of the iphone camera lol
I noticed that some shots from Arri are not In focus. But overall the picture is the same. As much as I can tell after RUclips compression.
Skin tones from the ARRI look way better but apart from that they both look fantastic!
Does Xiaomi give you the ability to record in ProRes LOG or LOG footage to be able to colour grade?
Awesome video! What would you recommend for some filter kits stabilizers microphones etc. Or is it a matter of looking at some of your old videos? Thank you!
It's awesome that we're all alive to experience something like this.
Wow!
In close up looks nice the iPhone footages but in far angle you can notice the difference of the quality sensor that ARRI is much better, but is unbelievable how the new iPhone can get this quality with a tiny lenses.
okay u said its comparable/ better than alot of aps-c cameras. But how does it stack to fullframe from some years ago? a7 iii? a7s ii?
The days of “oh your uncle thinks he can shoot the wedding with an iPhone” are almost truly here
Would you rather have consistent high-quality HDR or equivalently high dynamic range?
Would love to see the same comparison with the new Blackmagic Camera App! Makes the iPhone look even better
Haven’t checked it yet!
There’s less of the automatic software corrections/sharpening that the default camera app applies
An Arri Alexa 😉 @mattihaapojaa
The sensor is so much smaller, it fits in your pockets… Sure you see the difference, but like, except if you view something at the cinema, I would argue you could use the phone as a backup camera, for sure.
you can match colors and exposure/dr from an arri alexa to any camera... these comparisons are sptd.
To a non filmmaker it might difficult to tell, but personally I could tell right away
I really was digging your watch face and can’t identify it. What are you using? It looks clean and simple, I like it!
