  • For this who do not believe in the benefits of purchasing an oil catch can. FYI I filled two of the cups you see in the video
    Why should you get one?
    Best explained by Needswings :
"The 2 smaller (one on each bank) valve cover ports feeding into the bottom of the throttle body are pulling oil into the intake stream through the venturi port on the bottom of the throttle body. This is coating everything after the throttle body with oil. For those of you that have looked at the inside of your intercooler, intercooler, air distribution ypipe or intake manifolds will know what we are referring to. This oil coating is causing inefficiency to the cooling and flow through the intercooler and hinders flow through the ypipe and manifolds. The spark plugs will eventually foul as well due to this oil. The IAT and MAP sensor get coated with the oil, and the oil also makes its way into the combustion chamber.
Even if you were to do an oil change every single day this will still happen. its dirty vapours and oil residue we don't want in our engines...

Whoa. Thanks Paul! How many of these cups did you fill up in one oil change? Is this can big enough?

I have a 2002 SLK 320, same motor as the Crossfire. Had to pull off the air intake recently and discovered the inside of the intake was wet with oil. My mechanic didn't seem to concerned. Said it was pretty normal. Car runs perfect. Is it worth installing a catch can at 125k miles in your opinion? Am I really going to avoid problems or extend the life of the engine by adding a catch can? Also, the oil separators on top of the valve covers are supposed to catch the oil and drain it back to the heads. Is it just a poor design or are my oil separators potentially gunked up allowing the oil to get to the intake? Is it really "normal" on these motors for this to happen? Thanks

Prevents having knocking, pre ignition, will keep contaminants (carbon build up) from accumulating on your valves and pistons, keeps your engine intake and throttle body clean from oil vapors coming from the crankcase. the cleaner those parts are the better you will keep your engine running to as close as maximum performance.

Still interested in learning more about catch cans. Are they specific to 32AMG engines or applicable to all engines. In long term say 150k miles on an engine, what benefit do you believe it will provide?

they are for just about every car out there, Prevents having knocking, preignition, will keep contaminants (carbon build up) from accumulating on your valves and pistons, keeps your engine intake and throttle body clean from oil vapors coming from the crankcase. the cleaner those parts are the better you will keep your engine running to as close as maximum performance.
