We have these in bunches on my college campus in the Carribbean! I love playing with them, so cool watching the patch "disappear" and patiently waiting for them to reopen. I read that they do this to hide from being eaten and are also used as a bush medicine.
They also grow in my dad's village in Veracruz, Mexico. They call them Vergonzosas, the direct translation to English is "shameful" - but by their connotation it translates more like "shy ones". I love them!

What decade did you grow up in? I grew up in the Jamaican bush in the 80s and I didn't like them at all, because they were a number#1 contributor to my Daley injuries. They have small, sharp barbs that always got stucked in my bare feet when I went to tie out my goats. I always carry a machete to chop them out in those days.
