  • What does it mean to be an Adventist? Who decides who's in and who's out? Is there room at the table of Adventism to disagree while pursuing the same mission? These are the answers we search for in this new series from Seeking What They Sought. In episode 6, we're joined by Randy Roberts, Senior Pastor of the Loma Linda University Church.
Have a question you want us to discuss? Comment? Maybe you disagree with something we said? Either way, we'd love to hear from you! Shoot us an email at: seekingwhattheysought@gmail.com

Teresa Beem, here. For some reason, I haven't seen any of you guys engage with my numerous comments on your other videos...I get why you'd ignore my comments. No offense taken. My sister, Lee Lee Dart is a former SDA pastor from the Colorado area. (Adventurer Church?) And I knew Randy fairly well in Keene. (He may not remember, but we even went out on several dates! But I was a Fry back then. Randy worked for my dad in building our house near Keene when Randy was in school at SWAU.)
I DO love your show. Enjoying this series immensely. My family, who many are still Adventists, claim that Adventism is YOUR kind of Adventism and not the Ted Wilson kind of Adventism I was raised in. I certainly PRAY that Adventism does continue to evolve closer to the gospel and pray you guys will be forefront in taking them there. So your videos are very hopeful for me to watch. I think you guys are sincere in your love for Christ and I think we would actually be friends if we knew each other.
Now on to my reason for commenting:
I wanted to point out (I'm only at 8:13) that there is a REASON Adventists do not see the "longing" to be with God in other Christians in the same way Adventists long for the Second Coming.
One reason is that most Christians have always believed that they would see God after death. They are not awaiting the Second Coming for their souls to be united with God. The Second Coming means something different to them, depending on the denomination. So obviously their longing to see Christ would not be less than Adventists, but placed at a different point in Christian history--their deaths.
Also, Catholics and Orthodox and those who believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, experience a small "second coming" at each communion service. The Bride of Christ has moments of actual encounter as often as they partake of the mystery of the sacrament of The Lord's Table. This longing to be with her Spouse, Christ, is satisfied to a degree by uniting with Christ in the Holy Eucharist. That would be the reason Adventists would not see this "longing" Randy is talking about.
It is not that we do not have a true and sincere longing to be united with Christ, but the Second Coming is not that fulfillment of our longing. For most of us, the Second Coming is not as important as His FIRST coming but the Second one is expected with anticipation because we will see the end of all sin, when Justice will reign and Christ will wipe every tear from our eyes.

Seeking what William Miller & Adventists sought fills my heart with hopefulness. I am an African Adventist Baha’i. The Adventist Christianity in me is that I practice Ellen White’s counsels on health & daily living. The Baha’i in me constitutes of my participation in building Christ’s Kingdom on earth. I am caught up in speeding up the process of Christ’s coming so that “all eyes” can see Him in clouds.

15:00--re: Randy speaks of the "flipping of the triangle."
St. Augustine in the 4th century is traditionally the author of, "Unity on essentials and charity on non-essentials." Randy is just rewording this quote.
But the problem is this triangle of essentials is different among Christians and no denomination has the same set. Unity among the Body of Christ has been tried and failed since the Marburg Colloquy. We are not united on essentials such as the Eucharist (transubstantiation/consubstantiation) freewill vs. predestination, infant baptism, abortion, homosexuality, women's ordination. Oh, the endless theological list of things we divide the body of Christ over! And that is no insignificant thing. When Randy spoke, he listed some of the preferences. Where would he put the Investigative Judgement, the immortality of the Soul and Ellen White as prophetess? The SDA church places them at the very tip of the upside down triangle-- as essential. Adventists BROKE from other churches because of these convictions. So there is no way to actually unite on the essentials of Christianity NOR the convictions. I agree that this sounds good on paper and spoken in church, but it is a false consolation for the broken Body of Christ.

In other words those who will be part of the ‘remnant’ or saved will become Adventists at the end of time - therefore all will be Adventists - unless they have died before hearing the ‘Adventist’ message ie 3 angels message/sabbath/health message etc 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@Karen61165 No! People can call themselves whatever they want, the TRUTH is what will bind us together. There is only one truth, and God’s children will be united in that one truth. Now how we define that truth is what has the church of God so divided. Offcourse everyone including Adventists believes they have truth, BUT Adventist believe that all of God’s children all over the world in all denominations will be united in Truth. That’s why the time we have now we should be studying our bibles with the help of the Holy Spirit. We don’t claim to know it all. We do know what our job is, which is that the Lord has call this movement to teach the Sabbath Truth which had been lost during the dark ages. People can call us all sort of names and make fun of us all they want. This will not deterred us from the work we know God has call us to do. But I pray we do it in love!

No! Adventists don’t believe as you think they do - I suggest that you look again at what the denomination teaches about Christian churches - they believe ( as Ellen White believed ) that they are apostate - they believe themselves to be ‘the’ remnant - a view shared by other groups who also appeared in 1800’s such as Mormonism & JW’s
I pray that you will look carefully into the teachings of the SDA church to discover their teachings about other churches & themselves as having ‘the truth’

Gods love is unconditional but as we all know love that is not reciprocated is not reciprocated can be a very cruel love . Our obedience to Jesus is a condition that we love Him. It is only natural . A marriage is people doing things for each other to make them happy. God has said He is our Husband Jer 31: 31-33 . If we obey Him we glorify His name. If we disobey Him (sin) we profane His Holy name Exekn36. In Psa 91 God has promised to look after us come what may in the world. If we honour God He will.honor us. If we glorify God He will glorify us at His coming and we can live for ever with the Jesus we love to trust and obey . He knows more than we do .

My one question for Pastor Randy is,the African SDA church recently in Africa supported African leaders and other church's to pass a law making homosexuality a criminal offense punishable by civil law.Forget that homosexuality is a sin,as it is,and no worse than other sin,and without doubt God will settle these accounts .I ask,is supporting these laws criminalizing homosexuality and other sins not wrong.Silence on behalf of the US SDA church in my view is complicity, and greater in nutureing a system that will bring about a system that will enforce MORALITY, this is the beast and False prophet referred to in the bible.

    “King James Bible
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
~~ I left SDAs many years ago. The driving impetus was the negativity. Fear-mongering, nightmare inducing, looking under every Drivers’ license number & UPC code for the pathological dread of The Mark of the Beast, The Sunday/Blue Law, The Shut Door, The Close of Probation, ad mental breakdown. Whatever psychopath who wrote that vile little book, “NOW!” has a special crevice reserved in Hell…

    An Adventist is:
Part of a church that teaches that “Sunday keeping” or worshiping Jesus on Sunday will ultimately lead to the mark of the beast.
Teaches that Michael the archangel is Christ.
Adheres to the teachings and writings of a “prophetess” by the name of Ellen G White who when tested by Scripture proves to be a false prophet.
Teach that Satan is the scapegoat.
Rejects anyone to be in leadership if they want Christ Alone and The Bible alone-you MUST subscribe to Ellen White and her writings to be in leadership. You can not lead out if you want The Gospel alone.
SDA teach you must keep the law of Moses.
SDA was started by date setting-and built on a false prophecy.

Not sure what's wrong with teaching that the scapegoat, to be let out into the wilderness, is Satan. I certainly wouldn't want Jesus to be symbolically left out to die in the wilderness, instead of symbolically sacrificing on the altar, which represents dying for my sins❤

well for sure building a church that looks like a circus and sells coffee when we are not supposed to drink for starters and people go sing in the front like they are meeting at a park, you should be ashamed to allow that in a church as a leader. trying to attract people to God by the same method as the other groups then you are just a manager of a group of people that want to be entertained for 45 minutes and go home. all that Lomalinda stands for now is sad and that have no faith in the holy spirit to work and bring people to God.
