When you consider this film came out in 1978, and the filmakers had ZERO CGI to work with back then, the special effects are truly incredible. Legendary movie.
@@peterlenham3180 I know but Superman 1 won the Oscar because the "visual effects", without computers, there's a another making showing all effects in this movie, Superman didn't use computers, only visual effects with cameras. It's a Cinema Masterpiece.
IMO, he lived up to his cinematic counterpart. His fight & the will to keep going, is the closest thing we can really come to an actual, flesh & blood Superman. RIP to the real life man of steel.
40 years later and he's still the greatest. Henry Cavil, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh etc, they're all 10/10's in their own ways but Christopher was the living embodiment of Superman. There'll never be another.
Agreed. Christopher will always be that iconic Superman. He was born for the role. He had the perfect look for the classic Superman. While I enjoy some of the others, Cavill, Welling, and Routh, none of them are Reeve. I wasn't happy with Margot Kidder as Lois though. I think Anne Archer is a far better actress and much prettier...just my opinion though.
Christopher Reeve is the greatest Superman ever. RIP. My favorite Superman. The way he fly is so smooth. The scene with one hand holding a helicopter and the other holding Lois Lane wow what a scene. His scream when losing Lois still give me chills. Greatest superhero scream ever.
Donner said that in the scene when Chris first flies out of the Fortress in costume, he surprised Donner when he naturally banked in the turn to off-camera because he didn't know that Chris was an actual pilot...
I was only 8 yrs old when this movie came out. Christopher Reeve was then and still is my only real crush. I have never had a crush on anyone else then and today as I have on him.
I was also 8 yrs old when I saw the movie in a town called Utrecht, the Netherlands. I did not understand half of it but it was the most magical experience ever.
Richard Donner is such an underrated director.. A guy thats made The Omen, The Goonies, Maverick and The Lethal Weapon franchise arguably 45 years later still holds the greatest depiction of a Superhero on screen.
One of the greatest movies from my childhood years, the cast, the story, the effects and the music, it all still holds up today and for generations to come
I am a child of the 80's and Reeve will always be my Superman. All super hero movies to this day owe their success to this film as it truly pioneered the genre. Such an amazing film made with such heart that could not be replicated sadly after the first imo. It was always great seeing Reeve as Sups through the late 80's and 2 through 4 had their moments but the first film just holds such a special place in cinema history.
RIP to one of the greatest of all time whose immortal spirit still soars with us with class, grace, and the ability to show us all that the impossible can simply be conquered with love and courage 👑.
Its the best masterpiece and visual effects of the 70s.The music score is perfect and one of the best opening movie films of all time. Watching from Saint Lucia, Caribbean
This movie ranks as one of the top superhero movies and better than many of the more modern superman movies. Great acting and storytelling beat CGI every time.
49:05 Quite an honest moment from director Richard Donner. I admire him for that. Even if he nevertheless stuck to his opinions, I admire him for his raw honesty
Richard Donner and his crew created film magic without CGI way back then and is by far the greatest of all Superman movies to date. Rest in peace and thank you, Richard for a timeless classic.
They can never better this film, It's cast , it's crew and the movie itself. Christopher Reeve will always be the benchmark for Superman. As is the film.
Loved this so much! what a treat! Still my favorite hero movie, my childhood defined. Thank you and bless you Christopher Reeve also known a Superman!!
I can’t believe this video only has ~100k likes. There’s no doubt that Chris Reeve was a handsome man, but from what I know of him, he was beautiful on the inside, too. May he rest in peace.
Wonderful documentary! Never knew it existed, watched the movie zillions of times and this magic documentary answers to lot of questions I had since I was a little kid
When Elvis appeared I thought there was no other male human being who was created in such perfection in physical appearance... until Christopher Reeve came along to take over the torch.
I remember when this finally arrived at our local cinema…huge queues to get in and indeed the movie made the 6 o clock news headlines. Back then there was only one movie to match it…and that was ‘jaws’
still one of the best pieces of acting is Gene Hackman looking at his watch and giving the head shake after Valerie Perrine says "Lex, my mother lives in Hackensack".
I was lucky to be born in this time of movie magic. The imagery of Star Wars captivated my one year old self but Superman inspired my soul and I was blown away
@@adamwest3266 yes believe it or not. I do not remember moving from Los Angeles to Alameda county in 1977 when I was 5 months old. I do not remember as a newborn infant but perhaps a few months after the move I can trace memories of the following years, definitely 78', we must have seen star wars in the re release that year when they changed the title to new hope as they began working on Empire. So my memory definitely goes back to the zeitgeist of that era as toddler being among the youngest in a young family.
Of course I wasn't aware of new hope or empire in the making as that is retrospect. At that time it was just Star Wars. It was an awesome time to be alive and a child
“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.” Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996. What a Super Man.

I still wonder how they made this movie with all the challenges for that era (no cgi) .
Marlon was right about “searching” the right words. When we memorize sentences we shoot them. But when you have the words in front of you, you choose when to pause and where to look. I actually like that idea
Well you can visit the News building in NYC on East 47th with the big Globe in the lobby. I’m sure I can’t be the only Superman fan that visits and takes souvenir photos to this day. And Grand Central of course. On my first guided tour there I pointed out that Lex Luthor lives underneath.
What a fabulous BTS special. Pretty that’s ABC TV’s network announcer narrating this. And of course John Williams’ magnificent score! His best ever! The Love Theme is so epic ♥️

Richard Donner also directed LADYHAWKE (1985) amazing medieval action drama
I think he was born to play this role. What an incredibly beautiful man he was. No other reincarnation, reboot or rehash comes close to his Supe.
When "Lois says, "youve got me? Whos got you?" Reeve gives this barely audible chuckle which is just brilliant acting
