We take a look at our newest build, the pro varmint CZ 457. We baseline the rifle in the facotry condition with no changes made, not even the trigger settings.
We will utlimately build this 457 into the ultimate ELR / PRS CZ rifle with a chassis, trigger, barrel, and other supporting mods.
We will take this rifle from the box to the winners circle (Hopefully haha)

One thing that rarely gets mentioned, is to always clean the rifle, including the bore, before shooting a new rifle. You may e surprised at what those patches look like.
Here from Midwest Long Range. This is exactly the setup im starting with. Had the Athlon scope on my 1000 yd. Centerfire rifle and loved it. Just now getting into rimfire and the CZ457. Thanks for this series!!! Subscribed.
Great choice Josh looking forward to this series of mods and tests
Thank you
Looking forward to seeing your build on the rifle. Good start for the series.
This should be very interesting. Great idea Josh.
Watching your tests has help me narrow down my choices for my .22 rifle. I am defiantly thinking CZ at this point. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks Craig
Hey Josh- great way to start a new year! I’ve followed your lead on my new build and couldn’t be happier with the results. CZ 457 is a great action to base the build on. I went all in and put an Erik Cortina turner on mine as the final piece of the build. I’ll just say… small groups are fun.
Thank you again for your advise and content.
All the best in the new year!
Hey Mark. I appreciate it
Great shooting with the new CZ!
This is going to be fun watching this build. 👍
Super cool. Looking forward to it
Merry Christmas and thanks for the great vids in 2021!
Great video and excellent demonstration of how accurate these rifles are strait out of the box
Thanks
I love my CZ457 and anxious to see what the upgrades will do! Thanks for producing another great video,
Thanks Carl
I won't alter my 457 Synthetic, use it for pesting and fun target. It is one of those stock/barrel combinations that the maker got just right. Its LOP, grip, adjustable trigger, all suit me fine. Enjoy your videos though, shows the world what we 22lr fanatics can get from a rifle that does not break the bank.
Awesome
Great start, loking forward to the build
Thanks
Really like that CZ model can hardly wait for the transformation and up grades . Keep the content coming Josh and merry Christmas, best wishes in coming new year
Thanks Dean
Great start to the series!
Thanks
Looking forward to a step by step build. I can live vicariously thru your endeavors. Hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas. It's been in the upper 70's here in central Texas , just doesn't feel like Christmas weather
Hey Terry. It got unseasonably warm here as well.
Very excited to see what you do with this rifle and how those changes affect its functionality
I'm pretty excited about it as well
Picked one of these up a few months ago. Definitely my favorite for long range and small game hunting. Plain and simple and is a tac driver with cci subsonics
I’ve been shooting this for a year it’s been a great gun.
I got my 457 yesterday, mostly because of your reviews. Can't wait to fire it :) Stock is kinda crooked on it though 😳
Fun Fun Stuff! Thank you Josh
Thanks brother
Great choice. I have this rifle and feel it is a good choice for base class and Building it into an open class rig is a natural progression for a lot of people. Can't wait to see the progress. Keep doing what you're doing Josh!
Can’t wait 👍
Having owned a Pro Varmint, I would highly recommend this version of a CZ 457. The only reason I sold mine was that I wanted a Bergara B14R and I was able to recoup my entire purchase of the Pro Varmint due to the fact that I got it new for a really good deal. I've had better luck with the 16.5" version of the 457 and currently own a 16.5" MTR outfitted with an Oryx chassis. But I did enjoy the Pro Varmint while I had it and initially regretted selling it until I purchased my latest 16.5" 457.
I look forward to this build sequence.
So how do you like the B14r?
@@nosteponsnek2238 If you have the budget for one, I’d highly recommend it. It’s the most accurate .22 I’ve ever owned. The Trigger Tech lightweight trigger I installed to it makes it even nicer to shoot. If I can move one of my other toys, I’m going to get a carbon barrel version to compliment the steel barrel one I already have.
Good video josh
You a very good shooter. I see the ammo does make a difference in that rifle.
Very excited to see the progress you make on this one Josh! Have a few guys/gals looking to get into the sport (KYL bench), and this is a rifle I am keen to recommend.
Nice
Looking forward to this! I can't even find a CZ rifle anywhere. When I do I plan on upgrading as best I can.
Awesome
Great looking gun
Nice choice. It will be interesting to see the build and what changes give the most benefit. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Paul
CZ 457 PV with Athlon Argos has been my precision rimfire for the last couple of years. Added an ARCA rail to it and a Yo Dave spring, but it is otherwise stock. Been pretty happy with it. Just picked up a B14R as my open class starter rifle. I'll slowly accessorize it over time. Same model Athlon Argos on it and already added the ARCA rail. Trigger is next, then probably a better scope. Looking forward to this series!
Awesome
Love my 457 pro varmint with my athlon midas tac. Just put mine in a mdt chassis! Hoping to see the same here
I have this exact same rifle. I'll be watching this!
Awesome
Hey Josh! Awesome choice, I just got the exact one earlier this year. Put a Matthews Fabrication cheek riser, YoDave, Athlon BTS, stock everything else.... shoots 1.0" groups @ 100yds all day long w/ RWS Target, FGM, SK Std +. Looking forward to seeing you kick this bad boy to the next level! Happy New Year!
Awesome
Following! Great video
Every CZ I have ever owned and I have on a few. Has always out shot the test target
Same
Same here, as well
This is gonna be a fun series. Looking forward to it. I've got a T1x in an Oryx chassis, otherwise it's stock and it'll probably stay that way. Thinking about a 457 to give the T1x some competition and depending on the model, it'd remain stock or mostly stock for a while at least but it's gonna but fun to see how you go about getting the most of the the 457 action. Merry Christmas!
Thanks
That was a pretty good series
Thanks
LOOKING FORWARD TO IT JOSH!!👍
😉👉
With any luck I will be filming episode 2 tomorrow before this goes live
@@PursuitofAccuracy awesome!!
I am looking forward to watching this project, I am upgrading my sons CZ 455 so I may borrow some of your ideas
So far we are at a MDT LSS RF chassis we have had that for a while
Have a 20” 1/12 IBI Barrel on the way
Looking at trigger upgrades (prolly a timney)
Don’t tell my wife how much I have spent
Looking forward to this build. I've yet to see a CZ 457 or 455 that wouldn't shoot great right out of the box.
Yes sir
Hey Josh Merry Christmas to you and your family,
Thanks for the update Mate , this is going to be a very interesting build , I’ll be watching very intently to see how you go about the upgrades and what components you change out to achieve the accuracy you had with your other 457 , i have been looking around for a 457 over here but can’t find one anywhere the at moment when I do I intend to follow your lead with the rebuild and use it for bench rest and retire my 455 , looking forward to the next update, thanks again Mate , Steve .
Awesome thanks Steve
I’ve already committed that I’d like to see the MDT ACC chassis and the Ckye-pod. One thing to remember is with the ACC chassis it comes with a full length Arca built in and CKYE-pod comes with the Arca head and cleated feet which makes up for the pricing.
Id like to try the cyke pod.
Who would have thought it would be a tac driver out of the box, well not the voodoo guys at least. Great work mate thanks for the Xmas present all the best to you and the family mate..
Haha. I was kind of hoping for a little more breathing room but with a .3 start its gonna make me work for the upgrade results lol
@@PursuitofAccuracy yep a little bit of lot testing and your work is definitely cut out for you.
Man I have a cz457 that I have built for benchrest competition here locally. I have used it for a year and now don't get me wrong it's a great shooter. Last week I started looking for that cz 457 pro varmint you're using in this video and can not find one. You one lucky dude.
Great idea. I keep scrolling through videos with fantastic custom jobs but I don’t want to just clone a rifle. I want to build one at a pace I can afford for reasons that suit my needs. Thanks.
Happy Christmas Josh!!
😱 I thought it was looking good for a Tikka build 👍 💪.
Hope you do keep shooting that t1x.
I’m still waiting on a part two.
Good shooting buddy!!! Good video, as always!!!
The tikka is coming soon..........very soon
Can’t wait for that 👍👍
But you certainly sell the cz well, Top shooting 👍👍 you make it look easy!!!
@@adamhenley7297 My local shop has one but I got to make a few dollars first
@@PursuitofAccuracy very cool. I was hoping for a T1x build as well. 👍🏻
Josh, if you need an outlet for the stock barrel I’ll buy it when the time comes!
I love it
I owned this rifle. I was a great shooter. Sold it to upgrade.
You have a shooter, Josh...don't mess it up!
It was great seeing how the light weight and balance is effected on the tank trap.
Where do we go from here? Looking forward to the build.
My CZ loves the SK Match.
Hey Kent. Its a good shooter for sure. It will get a trigger, barrel, and stock or chassis
Last present to open 👌🎁
I see the T1x barrels are a bundle of laughs to change !
I can attest to the quality of Athlon scopes! I have two Talos 3-12x40, one on my CZ 457 American and one on my Bergara B-14. Good tracking, holds zero, and the optical clarity best I've seen in their price range by a long shot.
Waiting to watch because that is the same model I have.
Awesome
I Have one and love it .
Its a great rifle
Merry Christmas, I am waiting on a 457 LRP model. I can’t seem to find any so my local gun stores are trying.
I think out of the box the barrel, action and trigger are very good, good enough for most backyard plinkers and small hunting.
Right! How much better can it get? Shooting the wings of a fly?
When you shot off the barricade I was like " whew thank goodness Josh is actually human" because I can never keep my rifle as still as you do in almost all your videos. Great vid.
Lmao thanks Francois
Sir, I suggest you link to your website in the description. Excellent video - looking forward to the rest!
Thanks and will do. Typically I link the website. Just forgot haha
I have a 457 MTR IT is stock except AT1 STOCK, hope I can see and learn alot
Steadiness in the target cam amazes me.
Thanks
Hey Josh, Hope you are having a great holiday with the family. What would be cool is to try and maximize the performance of the gun with each new upgrade so they can be evaluated separately. From the bench and from the different positions. Obviously a fair amount of work but it would be interesting to see just what each adds to the base performance of the gun. Obviously the barrel is likely going to be the most significant. Take it easy!
Im trying to do that while also keeping the videos somewhat digestable and interesting.
@@PursuitofAccuracy You're nailing the content so far so keep up the good work.
I'm hoping you do some shooting at each step of the upgrade so it is easier to judge if the trigger makes a big difference . . . or the barrel . . . or the chassis . . . or whatever.
Definitely will be shooting for each upgrade. The proof is in the pudding as they say
Any gun that shoots .320-.450 straight out the box is a damn good base to start from.
I've just picked up a new mtr timber stock for my 457, a vortex venom, I will eventually do a nice barrel too but they'll be purely my bench rifle.
I also get my vudoo/strike eagle/triggertech in 2 weeks.
Merry Xmas to me hahahaha
Awesome man
Have a cz457 At-One that should be in this week, hoping the kids can use it and eventually do some silhouette etc locally at izaak walton. I just wish more of these stock started with a shorter LOP like 11". The KRG Bravo for a 10/22 starts at 11". I can't afford to drop as much or more than the rifle for a stock for the kids .22, I may just take the rear butt pad out and gain then a little. Talked to a local rimfire guy at our Scheels store and he's hoping to convince management to get some SK and Ely in as they only have some basic Ely and then CCI.
At my skill level, I would be happy with the stock gun for a long time. Great little shooter for the money. Spend the build money on ammo
Hi Josh! First congratulations for the content it’s really a great source of information for me! I would like to know based on your experience if a CZ 457 with a synthetic stock performs different (accuracy/grouping) than a wooden stock?
The wood stocks are more consistent with poi. There is a lot of flex with the polymer stocks
Josh, on this build, can you list the retail price of the parts and options as you go along, as most are amazed at how
they shoot, but don't realize the cost involved........
Yeah i will try and remember that going forward
😎👍
My CZ Varmint Pro love SK Standard and SK match the best.
Great shooting, trying to find some 10 round mags for the cz I have on order
CZ mags luckily are no longer an issue. Look at the L3I cz mags and the nds shooting cz mags
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
If my mtr would shoot like that, I would never touch it. .450 is the best it will do. But I'm going to do exactly what your doing. Stock, barrel, slugging the barrel. And bedding. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
You will get it brother.
Looking forward to the upgrades, I just got a 457 Synthetic. I could have got the one you have but I didn't like the 16 inch barrel and the Synthetic was about $175 cheaper. I plan on upgrading it later on.
Where are you getting the SK ammo from? I can only find Eley at the moment from Killough Shooting.
I havent bought any in a while
Josh, Merry Christmas and thanks for the video. If I wanted to use this rifle in the base class where would I find the MSRP? Do I just keep and turn in my receipt? You mentioned not even messing with the action screws? What do they usually come torqued from the factory and what do you traditionally prefer them to be torqued at? Thank you.
They go off of msrp from the cz website.
I torque to 25 in lbs for non pillared, 30 for pillared
Josh, I am really excited to see you start with this rifle. I bought the exact same one with the intent to rebarrel and install a new chassis. But the rifle is shooting so dang good< I'm afraid to touch the barrel. I just don't like the look of the 16" . Are you going to go with another Lilja? I've had a lot of guys tell me to go with IBI or if I just want a 20", order an MTR barrel from CZ. Most are saying their Lilja's and IBIs didn't out shoot the 20"MTR barrel I can't wait to see where you go with this. My vote for chassis is MDT XRS!
My lilja outshoots my mtr barrel
@@PursuitofAccuracy Lilja outshoot a lot of other barrel 😁
Thanks for the great info. I've been looking at a rifle for NRL22 Base class, and this may have just made up my mind. Have you ever done any videos about maintaining the CZ 457s you have (Including the bolt?)?
I have a how i clean my rimfires video on the channel
This 457 PV with a vortex 4-24x50 tactical put me at 1180$ 1200$ is the limit! So $20 to spare! Lol!
I have one and thought about putting a Lilja barrel on it.
Lilja barrel is really good.
Right now the 21” bull barrel is on back order till mid January
I hope the new barrel is the last part to go on. It would be a great comparison for the rifle to have all the goodies with the factory barrel directly compared to the rifle with all the goodies and the new barrel.
That will depend on when the chassis gets here.
I love the channel as a PT/MTR shooter myself, I look forward to like-minded enthusiasm for the platform.
But, I have to ask, at this point, how much of your rifle is still CZ ?
Other than weight savings and slight adjustments, what's the real advantage of a chassis? Not discounting those two advantages, but you can already shoot .3 MOA with sorted ammo and your current setup.
Go old school brother, give us some iron peep groups.
Yes I know how counter productive that sounds.
Only the factory action will remain.
The benefit of the chassis is being able to increase stability, add a lot of weight and balance the rifle easily. All of that makes it a ton easier to shoot accurately off of props for positional shooting.
The factory barrels are great for 100 yards and in but the aftermarket barrels generally produce better results from 200-500 yards
Creepiest video I've ever seen. I bought this rifle a little over a month ago. I've been using Athlon Optics for a few years - I'm using a Midas TAC on my build. Now I bought the 30 mil Area 419 rail. Waiting to proof this thing in the Spring but considering a Lilja barrel.
Subscribed and watching with intent interest. Thanks for the channel!
Thanks Thomas I appreciate it
Great video, I’ve been on the fence between this rifle and the wood stock heavy barrel version of the CZ 457 Varmint with the 20 inch barrel. Looking for a factory class ARA rifle.
I prefer the wood mtr to the pro varmint
I had to go with the PV because MTR with scope put me over base class in NRL22!!
I've got that exact cz
Awesome
Have you tested any CCI green tag out of your MTR. Loved your amok testing and my MTR like Eley match and Tennix
I have not
I'll be in the middle of our Christmas lunch BUT I'll catch up after that.
Are you going to show the baseline and then the changes?
Yeah this is just the stock rifle before we change anything
What scope camera are you using if you don't mind me asking?
Looking forward to your build.
Its the sideshot scopecam with the gopro they sell
I've been trying to buy a ProVarmint for about a year, hard to find at the gun stores in my state, seems like CZ pumps out 10 pistols for every rifle they ship.
Thats the truth lol
I know you said that you don’t like the shorter barrels… I have 2 CZ 457 MTR’s…my 16 inch MTR chassis barrel is much more accurate than my 20 inch MTR barrel over a wide variety of ammo when both barreled actions are in the same chassis.
Yeah its just a look and sound volume deal for me. Ive gad 16" barrels that were hammers. Just dont prefer them
I wish I could hold that steady.
Haha I apprefiate it
Awesome now where can I find a cz 457 been looking everywhere in pa man .. I’ll find one Iam sure I’d love to do this build with u as Iam getting serious about 22 lr . This was awesome but I herd u say you don’t like 16 in barrels . Is it just looks u don’t like ??
Looks and they are liud compared to the longer barrels
I have the CZ457 MTR. The pillars looks rock solid. I’ve heard of people changing them out to aluminum. Will that affect accuracy by changing them. Also would you recommend bedding the action. I shoot ARA rim fire 50 yard bench rest events with a front rest rear bag. Thanks
I dont see the need to change them to aluminum but you could and shouldnt hurt accuracy.
You could bed it but not sure youd see much gain in accuracy from it
I like that gun you are shooting . My friend I really like to buy one for small games hunting. What guns shop you bought from?
Local gun shop, mace sports
I'm shooting targets from a bench with a bag testing the accuracy of the scope tracking which is better 457 MTR or the
AT ONE or your choice under a grand...
I personally dislike the at one stock combo so mtr
Are the stocks the same from 22 lr to 17 hmr on the Heavy barrel models
Yeah the stocks are the same across the .22 and .17
Not too bad, but I’m very interested to see what you can do with it! This is going to be a cool series
I am happy with the stock performance but would like to see it shooting .2's at 50 and be much better off of the tank trap.
This is most likely a dumb question but I figured I would ask because I cant find the answer anywhere.
If I wanted to build a cz 457 for prs and was gonna go as fully custom as possible. Does it matter which 457 model I start with or are all the receivers the same? Hypothetically if I could buy just the bolt/receiver for a 457 would I end up with the same performance as the high end cz 457 once I do all the part swaps?
Yeah all the receivers are the same so get the cheapest you can find
I wonder if you are going with IBI 1/12 since you talk about faster twist barrel .
Or would be totally custom barrel from shilen or benchmark or Lilja ?
IBI 12 twist is going to be tested for sure
@@PursuitofAccuracy nice . I was about to order between Lilja or IBI 1/12 for my next built.
But my Vudoo , CZ457 LRP, KIDD10/22 and RPR with Lilja , are already keeping me busy in the gun range .
No sense in building more rifle unless it is significantly different than what I have already .
Just like you going to build something that is totally different 😁
Hi Josh.
I'm in proccess to build my cz 457 mtr. I pick you build as example for me. Unfortunatly we have no Athlon optics in our stores. I found that only
VORTEX VIPER PST GEN II 5-25X50 FFP EBR-7C MOA, is similar to Athlon you use. It is about $1200 in our local stores. How do you think, does it worth this money? May be it is better to add $300-$500 and look at leupold, or night force?
As long as it has the features and clarity you need your good to go
On the bench at the start how do you hold the crosshair so still? With my face on the stock my crosshairs pulse with my heart beat.
Really not sure honestly
