The way I found this video is. This morning I checked on my Orchids I mounted to a Ti tree and seen something that blew my mind. I had made my own bio char and left it chunky before adding it to a pile of compost for 6 months, so I took a handful of the compost bio char mix and put it into a double layer of coffee filters, tied it into a little ball, and mounted it to the Ti tree next to the Orchid roots. This morning when I looked closer than usual I noticed that some of the roots had grown right through a chunk of bio char in multiple spots and made it out the other side in multiple spots not following straight paths. My theory was always that nature would break down the bio char for me once its in the ground but I didn't think the Orchid would be willing to do it in a tree. I can't wait till summer to make some new bio char and get it charged up for some new orchid mountings. Btw guys I didn't see it mentioned in the video but DO NOT try and do this with uncharged or inoculated bio char as untreated bio char will only do bad things to your poor orchid.
@@vc400Not true. Pure charcoal with zero additives (fragrance, ingintion accelerator, etc) is charcoal. Especially if you make your own, which can be done in small batches using 2 tin cans. Zero impurities. Look it up😊
Can you please tell us where we can get that Schultz Charcoal, +AuSable Botanicals Ltd. ? Am about to repot my babies and want to add charcoal to the mix but am not sure which one to buy. Thanks!
Hi, This charcoal could absorbed nutrient from growing media, isn't it? What type of charcoal would you recommended? Is it suitable, Charcoal from carbonizing of coconut nut sell ?
I'm wondering this too. I hear bark is quite acidic so it can help balance it. I don't know if it would make too alkaline still though. Did you find the answer to this question yourself?
@@treasuresofplantz9203Not all...many brands out now just charcoal. Super easy to make in small batches using a can with a lid and a hole to allow fgases to escape or 2 tin cans with one inserted into the other, also with small gas escape hole. Easy and fun! Hundreds o' videos out there
In truth, it can be referred to as media or medium. Both are correct terms in the horticultural industry. I know this because my cousin is a horticulturist and owns her own garden nursery.

Since charcoal has a Ph of 12-13, can it make the soil too Alkaline?

Make you’re soup mix and then cover it with water, pour out the run off water and ph it and see what your ph is
Great informative video
I heard it can also help lower ph, is that true?

Omg is this MI gardener
It's growing MEDIUM not media y'all.

Both ok. Media is indicative of more than one type of medium, but terms can be used interchangeably. 😊
But Ca and Mg are added in salt form as fertilizer to orchids
