    I got the Mach 5 in summer 2022. I have logged 250 miles on them to date. I routinely run 5k-10k at a time, and I recently ran a half marathon, all in these shoes. I ran in the mud, in pouring rain, on a track, on a treadmill, and they have stayed durable with no significant appreciable deficits on the tread. They are very durable, very comfy and easy to train in, and I believe they even helped solve issues with my plantar fasciitis (likely multifactorial). I stand by Hokas, this shoe in particular.

    Just passed 350km on my pair (using them as a daily trainer) and they're still brilliant! The outsoles have definitely worn down in places, but I never slip in them despite running in pretty terrible English winter weather (rain, frost, wet leaves etc.) I was hugely skeptical when I purchased them, but have to say the durability (and grip) has massively exceeded my expectations. For anyone thinking about picking up a pair in the sales, I'd say go for it.

    Absolutely appreciate the detailed review and insight. I’ve had the Mach 5 since it came out, and only recently tallied the miles at well over 350. As others have noted, there is initial wear and outsole fraying, but it seems to just reach a point and then stop! I’ve had innumerable trainers for serious training miles over the last year, but I keep grabbing the Mach. The cushioning, as you point out, is just always there - nicely tuned no matter the type of run. I also appreciate the stability from the flared midsole - in both heel and forefoot; and the heel bevel is perfect (and appears to be copied by other brands - as was hoka’s rocker, toe spring, etc.). I am on the lighter side at 130lbs., but do use the Mach on both gravel roads and trails - nothing gnarly, primarily mtn. bike trails. Gotta say, love your format!

    Ive been using Nike pegasus shoes my whole life. I feel like as the years pass the worse the quality gets. The shoe was also very narrow, didnt have great ventilation, had mediocre cushion, and would tear easily. I just wanted to try something new and sent it with the $140 Mach 5's. Its bizzare too me how comfortable, lightweight, and roomy those shoes are. The only "down side" you pointed out was an upside for me.

    Great review Kofuzi! I took my Mach 4 to 430 miles - so I know exactly what you are talking about with regard to rubber coverage on the outsole. The outsole didn't look pretty at that point, but I'd say that the midsole was quite alright up until 325-ish miles. Once I crossed 350 miles, the midsole felt quite dead to me. I do virtually all my running on paved roads.

  • @cookinginpawleys
    @cookinginpawleys Год назад +17

    I’m a heavier runner with average (at best) mechanics and run on sandy, rocky asphalt and I took the Mach 4 to 400 miles. Cosmetically, the outsole looked bad by 250 miles, but the wear was even and the shoe felt great until 350-375 miles. The last 25-50 miles were still fine, but the shoe was relegated to easy runs as I phased them out. With the improvements to the top layer of foam, I would expect to get that many miles or more in the Mach 5.

    Well I am glad you asked! 😁Mizuno Wave Sky 4, used as a daily trainer for over a year, 1200 km, outsole still looks like it has plenty of life left, midsole a bit less. Mizuno Wave Rider 24, used as the fast days shoe and triathlon racer in the same period, 820 km. Outsole again still holding but midsole feels dead.
    This year I have a more diversified rotation, and no Mizunos but it makes me smile when reviewers do a durability review after 160km. That's, like, the shoes' post-warmup.

      @@kofuzi Over the past 6-8 years I've been alternating between a year in Mizunos (they were my first running shoes, that won a certain degree of loyalty) and a year in a different brand, just to see how the competition stacks. I liked the Rider a lot, my relation with the Sky was 'meh, it's the daily trainer'. This year I am on Novablast and I think they won me over, at least in the daily trainer category and if they survive at least a year / 600km.
      My point tho is something else, IMO 160km is no longevity test, I am sorry. I know this is pretty much the 'industry standard' among YT reviewers and I am not trying to single you out here. I am complaining here because I follow you and not many other.
      My bet that for the vast majority of people who have a one-shoe rotation, maybe two, the goal is to replace them once a year, tho this might not be representative of the audience of a running channel, who actively go out seeking shoe reviews 🤷

    I've just hit 200 miles in mine, and despite a couple of spots where there is some visible wear, I've not had a single issue with slipping on any road surface. The only time I've had any slip was through a local woodland path which was muddy and would have caused any non-trail shoe to slip. Cushioning seems as good as day one, and I still love running in them. I've used them for long runs to intervals and have found them brilliant for everything. Super impressed and would highly recommend them to anyone. The only downside is the fact I have to crank the laces right down to get a snug fit as you say, but that's not a reason to not buy them and I do have rather narrow feet.

      I think there’s a big disconnect between HOKA’s trail and road lines. For example, Hoka says the road version of the Clifton is the Challenger ATR, and that makes very little sense to me. The Torrent as the trail version of the Mach also doesn’t quite seem to be a fit. Perhaps the Zinal?
      But in terms of picking which shoes might pair well together, I look for things that would be fun to have in the closet at the same time or that would otherwise be complementary. They don’t have to be betrothed, matchy matchy pairs

    Impressions? The shoe is very light, you don't feel it on your foot when you put it on. It fits comfortably and has a fairly flat insole, which I like. The shoes are surprisingly wide. I tried on the Clifton 8 once and it was tragic - too narrow. I don't have any such problems here. For comparison, the Mach 5 are much wider than the Triumph 20 and slightly wider than the Clifton 9.

    Everyone kept recommending Hoka for me. I don’t run but walk and at the time I was walking 9.5 - 10 miles a day and my metatarsals were just burning. I break my walks into a shorter am walk (3.5 - 4.5) and an afternoon walk. I try to have 2-4 pairs of shoes I can cycle in a day and week. In the early spring I got 2 pairs at REI super discounted. One looked very similar to the Mach 5. The other was a trail shoe and it’s really good on light rain days. They were super comfy, especially in the metatarsal area. They were a bit wide but I broke them in. The tread lasted waaaay longer than my adidas. My adidas’ not only lost tread quickly but the padding around the heel just disintegrated super fast. My ASICS also had the padding/tread go but lasted longer than the adidas but shorter than the Hoka. Sadly I got my Hokas at a ridiculous sale so I’m not sure when I’ll ever be able to buy them again. Thanks for the review!

      @@kofuzi brought my Saucony speed 2 out of retirement. Thought they were ready to hit the shelf at 400 miles but they are still a better option even at that mileage. The tread is still excellent but the midsole has softened up a bit. But they still pack a punch. Especially doing back to back runs between that and the mach 5. Also have the NB rebel V2 which in all regards is in the same playing field and the mach 5 as far as "purpose" goes. And I find those to be more comfortable as well as able to tackle long miles without compromise. The fit of the mach 5 is great but I found the ride to be rather flat and uninspiring. But of course each shoe works for some more than others. Just not a fan of Hoka road shoes. My Clifton 8s felt rather dead after 100 miles and they became casual shoes at that point. On the durability front, I've got 496 miles (~800 km) on my Hoka Mach 4's. I am a light runner and my shoes tend to last well. The bottoms have worn in the same areas as my other shoes (outside heel, ball of the foot, and big toe). In the high-wear areas the shallow/light grooves in the bottom are worn away, but the deeper grooves still have some depth left. The main pattern of the tread on the bottom is still apparent. I like the Hoka Mach 5, though I ordered a new pair of the 4s. To me the previous iteration is more firm and prolly the profly + too squishy for me underfoot. Even walking around with both shoes, I prefer the the 4s, but that's a personal preference. I hope this trend of squishy marshmallow shoes doesn't extend to all running shoes, and brands keep the responsiveness of a shoe on the firmer side.

    My Mach 5 has around 150 miles (241km) on them and I still feel like my running on clouds. Sure the outsole doesn't look brand new but it's holding up just fine for me. Appreciate the recommendations for the race day shoe and other comparable daily trainers

    These were my favourite shoes ever. And I too luv em on the trails. Lock down was 💯 great for me and toe splay and room in toe box are great. I actually think the no actual rubber on the outsole makes it better because it provides better ground feel and it can twist and mold to the surface beneath your feet for example rocks and jagged edges. And I'm happy with there longevity for the comfort and versatility that you get. I stocked up on a few at the boxing day sales because I think the Mach 6 is going to be a bit different to these one of a kind sneakers. God bless you and have a blessed 2024.

    I got like 60 miles of running on mine (on top of regular daily use) and they are good for long running, I just don’t like the arch, wish I would’ve noticed it before I bought it, plus the Dino design in the heel feels a little weird lol.
    Oh, I have used it for all types of runs too, not just the longer run, lol.
    The rocker part and the width together keeps you from tripping, very well.

I still use them for the slow runs but usually go with my Cliftons for that. I'm just wondering whether running in Rincons as well as Machs makes sense. They feel very similar and the RIncoms are much cheaper. But the Machs are my favorite of all shoes and have been for 3 years. What I really need is a daily runner designed to run slow. All of these Hokas roll you forward making it hard for me not to accelerate out of my planned slow run.

I just bought Hoka Mach 5 and and Hoka Bondi X. For Ironman marathons I'd aim anywhere close to 4 hour marathon, so I guess speed shoes aren't as big of a factor because I'm slower? Anyway, wondering if I should switch to Bondi 8 for comfort or consider Hoka Carbon x3 ... or another shoe in their lineup.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  Год назад +1

      I think it's splitting hairs a bit, but I would disagree. I think the SG5 has a bit less stack height in the forefoot that makes it feel like it has a road shoe drop. it's a bit more snappy and speed oriented than the Mafate 4, which makes me think the SG5 might line up well with the Mach 5. I think maybe the better road/trail pairing for the Mafate 4 would be the Clifton (I know Hoka says the Challenger is the trail Clifton, but I would have to disagree).

    Customs tariffs
    Remember those fuzzy soles on shoes ? ?
    By covering 35-50%? of the bottom sole the manufacturer changed classification to slippers !
    Classification is by sole and uppers.
    Slipper tariff 7-12% ?
    Rubber/plastic soles tariff 30%-
    Early 2010s tariff law changed where the material of sole could be different material/ textile- more on Google.
    So no those bottom soles aren't by pure design.

I have two pairs of these and both pairs started consistently making clicking noise when run in, right around the 200km mark.
