- Insoo Kim Berg, one of the founders of solution-focused therapy, speaks about the miracle question, at the Asian Pacific conference on solution-focused therapy in Singapore in 2006. After listening to her you will understand why people sometimes say that the miracle question doesn't work. It's because for this question to work, it needs to be presented in a particular manner, in a manner that evokes the imagination of the client.
Thank you for sharing Ben. I enjoyed listening - particularly around the importance of the 'timing of the question'. The way I see it is that the question needs to be asked after the Unconscious Processes of the Mind have been 'primed' and invited to participate/play. I also benefited from reading the comments. Thanks again 🙏
Rest in piece Insoo Kim Berg
"Pauses, by the way, they're as important as the questions you ask." So true.
My take is that ppl can only say the right thing right time when they are sincere and really care fully otherwise they want to imitate things and limited car shows itself this way. This is a quality that can’t be taught it is about ppl heart
Yes, this was at our first Asia Pacific Solution Focused Approach Conference that the Academy of Solution Focused Training organised in Singapore. We had over 300 people were there. It was an incredible experience listening to Insoo as she talked about the power of the Miracle Question. I have a lot more video clips of her at this conference that I will post soon! We recorded almost the entire program.
Thanks Ben, Insoo Kin Berg is such an amazing person. Learn a lot
Her speech is pure Art instead of lecturing theory...
The Miracle Question needs to be asked when the client is in the Left Prefrontal Cortex (I.e. in the positive, Intellectual Mind rather than still in the Primitive Mind).. If asking the question whilst the client is still in their Primitive Mind, they will say ‘don’t know’..
David Newton, is that you? Or just one of your many drones, reading out one of your many scripts. Tell us more about polar bears!
It is interesting that she mentioned at the 9:55 point of the video that she does not know about it being like trance work, because she did not study hypnosis. I believe that this is a half truth. Steve de Shazer and Insoo were influenced by Milton Erickson MD that did hypnosis trance work. Here is the problem with her statement. The Miracle Question is a repackaging of Milton Erickson's Crystal Ball Technique in which Steve wrote a journal article in 1978 (Journal of Clinical Hypnosis). The Miracle Question was developed in 1984. "The miracle question can be seen as a modification of a hypnotherapeutic technique invented by Milton Erickson and described in his paper entitled “Pseudo-orientation in Time as a Hypnotherapeutic Procedure” published in 1954 in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis." I believe that I am quoting you directly here, so it appears you know this as well. Thanks for posting, Brian Milliken
Brian, you are completly right, Steve de Shazer gave a speech about the crystal ball technique as a source for the miracle question for the ME Foundation. I have it on audio tape - he clearly refers to MHErickson.
Very good video, informing for the miracle question, which Berg explains and demonstrates very elegantly
Thanks Ben for the video, great!
♡ thanks a lot!
Thank you Ben.
Love her
I love it 😍
Thank you :)
This is why I do not like musicals. The whole time I'm boiling in impatience thinking, "Say it! Just say it!" Took me till 6:30 before I heard her say anything.
Good job its not a musical hey paddy. Maybe open you're ears and accept patience. She is a genius
