What a great song. It came out in 1973. Little did I know it would come true for me one day. Although it took a lot more than one summer. I met Penny when I was 16, and she was 30. It was the summer of 1977. We eventually ended up working the vast majority of our EMS careers together as EMT/Paramedic partners for decades. We were a great team on and off duty, building a successful life together. I knew Penny for 43 great years. We lived together for 30 years, married 15 of them (I was her second husband). Unfortunately, she passed away suddenly in May 2020. I can tell you they don't women like Penny anymore. I love and miss you, my wonderful wife. But life goes on. What wonderful bitter sweet memories this song brought back for me.
Oh, That would have been hard for you. I hope you find your comfort with this, as I have too, although we both moved on. Similar with the meaning to this and the age between us. Yes, it brings back memories.💔
Oddly I've heard of the movie because of the theme. I never put the connection together until I read your comment. I know want to watch it. I got a glimpse of the ending and it looks sad as "f."
@@StanBennet ..YA have to see it, Go to any Library throughout America and they will lend it to you...THAT MOVIE IS SO NICE, GREAT STORY LINE, SOME REALLY FUNNY AREAS, AND VERY VERY SAD....
This happened to me when I was 17. One of my parent's friends was having trouble with her marriage and she came to stay at our house for a few weeks. I was 17, she was 29. Her name was Linda and I'll never forget her❤
Never mind "not knowing what to do or say when you're young" I STILL don't know what to do or say even NOW in old age🤣. Anyway, great classic song, one of the deepest and best songs ever put together. Many thanks.
She was by far the prettiest girl at work and i was the immature scruff who doted on her. everyone wanted her, but she chose me, 46 years ago. I still miss her. cc. x
I knew the recording engineer on this track. He was worried about the orchestra arrangement, that high pitched sound at the beginning. I think it gives it the perfect feel.. sizzling 👍 great job Ernie Winfrey RIP brother🙏
This song brings back memories for me. I was 25 living a block away from the beach, Huntington Beach CA. I had just got home from work. It was a overcast cloudy day. For some reason, something inside me was telling me to go down to the beach. I went down, it was deserted. I was just hanging out watching the surf. Then way down the beach to the south of me. I saw a figure walking my way. The figure was too far to even see if it was male or female. As it got closer, I could see it was a female. But she was still to far away to see much of her other then she had silky long dark hair. Trying not to look at her make her feel weird. I looked out at the ocean. Then I heard a woman's voice. I turned to her, looked at her. She was a gorgeous woman with a warm perfect smile. We talked and laugh for close to a half hour enjoying each others company. Then she said she had to get heading home. I ask if she lived far away. Just my luck. She lived on 11th st. The same street as me, but closer to the ocean. I walked her home. When we got to her place. She said: Wait here for a minute, I'll be back out. She came out handed me her phone number. Ask that I call her before I went over. She was a beautiful woman, I will never forget her. I can only remember her first name was Cindy.
Great song. When this was a hit I was 17 yrs old and my girlfriend 17 yrs old too. We loved this song, we were so in love. By the end of the summer I was a Recruit on Parris Island with the United States Marine Corps. I missed her so much. Great time to be a teenager. I'd do it again.
@colleenross8752 thank you Colleen. I tell people the same thing, it was an honor to serve our great Nation and beloved Marine Corps. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant. BTW this was a great song. When I was 17 years old.
The summer of 1942 was a great period piece of a film and I love it so much. It is so bitter sweet that it hurts, but I can’t stop watching. I bought it on Prime, my guilty pleasure, to watch a bygone age. My 83 year old mum loves it too x
Totally agree, and I'll bet you will agree with me on this. It reminds me of "A Summer Place" with Sandra Dee and Troy Donohue. The movie 🎥 isn't considered a masterpiece/academy award winner by critics, but it's almost a symbol, and an anthem for an era that can never be duplicated again, and now it,and it's theme song have become legends in music and filmlore timepieces.
I love this song and I'm 66. I heard this song as a young man and it inspired some background for 4 characters I was writing about. They were kind of like Young Detectives or something. Hardy Boys inspired, but more physical. They all had their own fighting styles. I know no one cares. The 4 guys were Chinese, White, Black, and Latino. The Black guy was named Billy Ray.
"The Summer of 42..." A great movie but the book that this is based on fills in the blanks. A great book. Please, if you can get a copy read the book. Makes this video all the more bittersweet.
Heard this song many times and saw in another site that someone commented on what if it was the other way around! Who cares Men go after young woman all the time so why cant woman. 17 isn't that young way back in buggy days they were married off younger than that.
I go back in my mind for the very first time, feel the touch of her fingers. I've posted before I got intimate with many older single, separated and married women and always miss the one who's no longer here
