    Heather Thomas had me tuning into The Fall Guy every week. Strangely enough, I wasn't into electric racing sets or even electric trains for that matter.

    My favorite track was a slot less track. You could change lanes to avoid a tractor trailer that went in the other direction and a ramp that had a section with no metal so you had to jump far enough to keep going

  • @grife3000
    @grife3000 2 года назад +7

    I'm sure that there were some kids that could use the trigger to perfectly regulate the speed to make the corners without jumping the track. I was not one of those kids.
    Set-up to disappointment ratio was far less than the vibrating field football players game. You set up the play perfectly and when you apply power every fool goes every which way.

    Although a much earlier race track set, when I was a kid I had the Captain Scarlet race car set (two Spectrum Patrol cars. One red and one yellow).

    I had the A-team set. It worked exactly as it advertised. If you gunned the cars in the curves were the yellow extensions are you could make it whip around and go the other way. Actually a lot of fun!

    We had one called the Snake Track with two jeeps. You could bend the glow-in-the-dark "snake track" into curves and hills. Worked great for a long time, but eventually the metal rails starting popping out of the bendable track.

    I have a CHiPs boardgame with that same Ideal artwork. I've never seen the racing set.
    I don't think I ever saw the Star Wars racing set in any store. I think I would have loved it.

    I had a Dukes of Hazzard _slotless_ racetrack... as the cars whipped around the track, they'd switch lanes as they hit the curves from the centrifugal force & keep going... very simple figure 8 track, worked well enough, but yeah, got boring pretty quickly 😄

    I used to have the Knight Rider race set in 1984. Played it until the cars no longer worked. Most of the race sets I got as a kid didn't last long. I would throw them into the garbage can. Fastforward to 2003, I was collecting unopened race sets. I like race sets best when there are sealed in the package.

    HO is the scale of the cars/track, and it's from the model railroad scales.....which has O and half of O, which is HO, and N, and G scale, and I think a few others, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head, but HO scale is VERY close to 1/64th scale which is what most hot wheels/matchbox car is

    How well they worked depended a lot on who the manufacturer was. Aurora under the AFX Branding and Tycho generally had very good sets with well made fast cars. They also both made HO scale electric trains so these were scaled to match the train sets. Back in the day you could get special crossing pieces so your trained and race track could intersect. Creating wholesale disasters for your town. The other brand that was decent and holds up better than most of you get one of their sets is Ideal Toys TCR racing. That was the "Slot-less slot cars" you could change lanes. They were merged into Tycho so the later TCR sets were Tycho. Many of the other sets such as Galoob were just shit. And the Johnny Lightning Cyclone (the tower with loops thing) was more like a HotWheels track.

    The best set was most likely the first set you showed because it was the only 4 Laner track! The majority of those gimmick slot car tracks all sucked. Ta really race, you had to have a large "No Gimmick" track that was made with the goddamn slot cars in MIND!! Lotsa guard rails, lap counters and tons of track! Those old "pistol-grip" controllers were mostly bunk too. Technology wasn't there to have sensitive enough speed control over the cars. You can't believe the shit they got today! It's wicked crazy! \m/

Just reminded me of catching a Richard Pryor movie about him running moonshine and becoming a famous African American stock car racer. Not sure why my 7 or 8 year old ass watched it. They are a terrific tool for teaching the lesson of “the Ideal versus the Reality!”

    HO is the scale or size. We had one where there was a “Jam” car that just always went slower than normal and the controller had a switch that allowed you to switch tracks and pass the jam car. Problem being which ever track the jam car was on robbed you of juice and allowed the other car to easily pass both of you. It was slot-less and had three rails. Had one with off road trucks, hills and a jump. We would also used to make jumps by disconnecting a section of track and using bread ties to jump power across the “gap”.
