I've got some specifics as to *how* Generations neutered the Egg Dragoon's music track:
-The original's sporadic breakbeat drum n' bass percussion is watered down to an easy-to-follow rhythm with little punch.
-The opening melody is no longer performed solely by brass instruments (which bring alarm klaxons to mind), which instead take a backseat to strings, which lack the bright timbre. Speaking of strings...
-The high wailing of the violin from the original is cut entirely. Before the original fight even starts, there's a scene where Sonic struggles to find his bearings while in freefall backed solely by the percussion and violin solo, before Eggman descends in time with the song's climax.
In Generations, it truly feels like Eggman and Sonic are just going through the motions. No showmanship and no substance, reflected perfectly through this Diet Egg Dragoon track.

To make it all worse, the final cutscene ends with a stupid Colors quip about "Durrr I beat u evritim like itz muh jawb or smth" to drain any shred of climax away even further.

What I love about Egg Dragoon:
    1. The fight in Unleashed seems to be made to kill regular Sonic, since it limits his speed and overall reach.
    2. The fight in Generations seems to be made to kill the Werehog since it's about speed and mobility, things that the Werehog lacks.

I think the funny thing is, Eggman built the egg dragoon as a Sonic the HEDGEHOG counter, and data didn’t pick up on Werehog with the use of heavy armour and firepower . Meanwhile he built the machine again in Generations as a Werehog encounter not a Hedgehog one, by applying more mobility and evasive tactics, alongside a freezing weapon to hold him still. Well that’s how I see it.

So, in defense of the Egg Dragoon boss fight in Generations.
The fire laser *is* used, most videos however don't demonstrate it because Robotnik needs enough time to finish his Ice Shockwave attack in the 3D sections (this includes not grinding on the Rails) to say "BURN!" and use that Arm Cannon properly, which is entirely dependant on if you have Boost or not. In phase 2 same deal. As for his Drill Attack, you *do* actually have to sidestep it because you CANNOT jump over the explosion it causes. The boss fight in Generations *knew* it couldn't match the Story Intensity of Unleashed, and instead went ham in the gameplay department by making the Egg Dragoon a final exam of Modern Sonic's gameplay (which is done fantastically because unlike... Y'know, some Eggman Bosses, you're actually doing something, and the fight can QUICKLY turn sour, I recall losing a lotta lives when I first met this boss, wheras I don't think I could lose to the Unleashed Egg Dragoon once, even casually). 3D sections, 2D sections, Walljumping, Rail Grinding, and Freefalling all in a single boss fight, the Egg Dragoon in Generations is the *real* final boss of that game, the Time Eater is more of a finale.

While Egg Dragoon theme still does feel a bit more watered down in generations than unleashed, I still liked that they kept the orchestral feel to it. I think outside of a few level tracks and the final boss fight it is one of the few that doesn’t really incorporate much synth into the theme. Not that synth in music is bad, the rest of generation’s soundtrack is still amazing, but when it comes to the egg dragoon, I feel it’s important to keep that orchestral grandness it had in unleashed because that was part of its identity, which they did do which was more than enough for me to enjoy it in gens despite having removed some really good parts.
Now imagine my surprise when it shows up in forces and its theme is now ENTIRELY incorporated of synth and digitized instruments with not a single orchestra instrument to be heard with no grandness or tension in its theme. They really did make the egg dragoon feel like just another eggman mech here

Something I like to think is that the Egg Dragoon in Unleashed isn’t finished and the generations version is the finished product because of the amount of things the generations version can do that the unleashed version can’t and I think it adds to Eggmans desperation for him to use a robot that isn’t even finished yet.

Btw: dragoon is an actual word. from what I could gleam from Wikipedia, it means something akin to artillery or cavalry or special unit etc. essentially meaning “big guns”. If this is true, the egg dragoon would be named so due to its arsenal, being equipped with a fir shooting Gatling/ cryo cannon and a lance/drill launcher.
I now contest the title as biggest egg dragoon fan by having simply googled the word dragoon.

I like to think that the unleashed dragoon is eggman's flaw of being impatient coming full circle. He rushed the awakening of dark gaia, forceing him to regather it parts. He rushed ejecting sonic into space, neglecting to grab the chaos emeralds. He rushed off after Sonic confronted him in Mazuri, accidentally leading Sonic to the first gaia temple. Things like that just keep happening until he decides to fight sonic in the prototype 1, "prototype", as in it is literally not finished. That may explain things like why the shield generators are in an exposed spot or why the controls can be locked up simply by punching it. Eggman plan was great, but he was too eager to beat Sonic, and he made careless mistakes at nearly every opportunity, leading to his utimate failure.

  • @Dots988
    @Dots988 5 месяцев назад +29

Actually, eggman DOES use the fire strip attack in generations. It just circles around the whole tube and forces you to jump over them if you take too long.
I think gens and unleashed respected the robot and understood why it was hype
Unleashed is supposed to represent how both sonic and eggman have grown and eggmans involvement in the story. Eggman finally creates eggmanland and finally has the power to rule the world, meanwhile for sonic it represents how the mech he once struggled with now has the ability TO defeat it with a transformation that sonic was first struggling with. Its THE final boss fight for both characters, the culmination of their arcs throughout the game.
Meanwhile gens is more of a nod to what the robot was intended to be, the peak anti sonic mech. Now the mech is going faster than sonic always being infront of him, and its finally finished instead of being a prototype. Unfortunately, yes the fight is lessened in intensity because of time eater but i also think its because of unleashed that the fight is the way it is. Now instead of this fear of “oh boy, this eggman mech i fought in the beginning of the game that i needed to go super so i could beat them is now fighting me in werehog form” its instead “I’ve faced you down so i know what i gotta do, but you’re still pretty strong.” Both characters know that this isn’t the same threat as before. Sonic WILL save the world and eggman is fighting just for the satisfaction of finishing his ultimate mech yet which is why he says “I was supposed to beat you this time”.
Forces is just disrespectful in every way. Before with how they handled it in gens, MODERN sonic could take it because sonic UNDERSTOOD how to fight it and used his strength to win. No offense to classic but LITERALLY HOW DOES CLASSIC WIN IN THIS SCENARIO?! Its true that sonic overtime has gotten stronger, and because of that he’s able to take larger foes. SO HOW IS CLASSIC SONIC FIGHTING *THE* ANTI SONIC MECH DESIGNED TO COUNTER MODERN SONIC. No dire song to panic to, no engaging challenges that the boss represents, and the dialogue is just a nothing burger.
All together Really good video! I do hope you get to play eggdragoon soon!

Good video! I did spot a minor error here though, Egg Dragoon in Generations DOES fire the red laser that's shown in the opening, he just sometimes never does it. He mainly does this when he splits in two, I think it's more likely to do it if you decide not to jump on the rail and run up close to him, though he can end up doing it either way. Though if you're on hard mode, he goes ham with it like there's no tomorrow! Or at least as I remember it, I used to play the game on my PS3, which means he could have a higher chance of doing it there than on other versions. [likely due to wacky porting, the boss fight is already jank at times, so this doesn't seem entirely unlikely to me]

fun bits about the unleashed dragoon - eggman has not seen the werehog in combat during the entire game. the dragoon was built with only data on regular sonic. likely it was designed to be fast enough to be out of sonic's reach, and even then, the cockpit was the obvious spot to target. if sonic were in his comfort zone he would have gone straight for the cockpit. however, due to his slower speed he had to actually think about his approach. additionally, he would have had a much harder time ripping them out without the stretchy arms. it's seemingly built for range and to be high up as well, taking into account sonic's lack of flight (ignoring how he has all the chaos emeralds here). however, the continent is still floating here, and dark gaia is complete, so all evidence suggests eggman has won, despite sonic's resistance. (side note - if sonic and chip had visited professor pickle one less time they would have gotten there soon enough to prevent dark gaia from being released). however, he seemed to have run out of time to design it since the gens version has the ice feet. canon-wise that was likely a cut feature from the dragoon, but during gens eggman has the opportunity to finish it, although it still wasn't enough. and then he mustve designed the forces version with a brain injury since it completely loses all ferocity and gets beaten by fucking classic sonic. went from one of eggman's greatest creations to a monument to the fuckup that forces was.

Adding to the point you repeatedly brought up about how the original Egg Dragoon fight had a sense of urgency and desperation about it, it also had a hidden auto-kill attack if the fight carried on for too long, with Eggman destroying the final platform while laughing maniacally and taunting, "There's nowhere left to run! Time to end this, Sonic!"
Granted, its rather unlikely that one would even come across it unless they intentionally stalled the fight, given that it takes a little over nine minutes to reach that point, but at least the threat of impending doom was there, which the other two fights seriously lacked.

I don’t think you’re really doing the Generations version justice, and I do recommend you play it. Obviously it loses grandiosity the same way every boss but Metal and Silver do, but that’s just symptomatic of putting end-game bosses in Generation’s lack of story. The boss is still animated excellently, and it feels like a real menace.
The gun arm is used for an attack! It does a huge rotating-fire-laser-cage thing, and it’s pretty cool. Just about all of the guides on RUclips beat the phase before the attack comes out tho. Shame, as it’s probably his flashiest attack.
I think its only real failing is its pacing. There’s a badass attack phase where the top and bottom halves separate and bombard you with ice waves and fire lasers and it’s AWESOME, but if you’re keeping pace with the boss (and especially if you’re using the jump pads that launch you up to the grind rails) he’ll almost never use it.
In conclusion, it’s an awesome boss and you should definitely give it a go. It’s a real shame that beating it optimally means you don’t see some of the awesome stuff, and I really wish there were better videos showcasing them.

Wha- no I was supposed to beat you this time! At the end of the boss

16:05 A "dragoon" was a type of mounted infantry that carried blades and firearms and could fight either mounted or dismounted. They were less specialized than traditional cavalry but were faster and cheaper to train and could fill multiple different roles on the field depending on what was needed. It's a fitting name for the Ultra-Hyper Prototype 1 since it's a real swiss army knife of a mech.

Most people don't see this as an icon. I see the egg dragoon as an icon, as someone who first played the Sonic series with Unleashed. I have replayed this game for over 15 years (PS2 save file was corrupted last year and I need to get a disc drive to get a copy I can play the story in now bc mine's got scratches from the amount of times I played it) and one day, while playing it, I noticed something with both the Egg Lancer and the Egg Dragoon. The Egg Lancer, as you stated, cobbles together both the Egg Beetle and Egg Devil Ray (tysm for noticing it), but what isn't really talked about is the Egg Dragoon does something similar, at least in PS2/Wii versions. The three attacks when he's not breaking the platform are ALL BASED OFF OF THE PRIOR THREE NIGHTTIME BOSSES. The fireball projectiles that home in on you just like the feathers of the Dark Gaia Phoenix, the icy blasts the Dark Moray charges up at you that can freeze you are here too, fired as a charged attack from the gun and the electrically charged hammer swing from the Dark Guardian (Sidenote: That boss is PATHETIC, I have a record of UNDER 20 SECONDS on it) translates to the electrically charged drill swipe. And even the drill could be a refrence to the opening cutscene, with the earth broken apart. Just bc we don't have the voice lines PS3 and xbox 360 have (I will get the xbox version one day) it does not downplay the epicness factor, especcially as you get TWO CHANCES to regain lost health (rings) and they're when you're freefalling
I have never played Generations, but the boss fight looks tolerable to me
Sonic forces just butchered my boy, I literally was like 'I'm disowning this Egg Dragoon fight' as soon as I played it
Wyvern from Frontiers... Well, it's too similar to be a coincidence, right? But if it is actually related, then it's a return to the Unleashed form as the fight was EPIC

Actually, Infinite is supposed to be another Shadow thing (fake memories and a fake past made by Eggman to give him the will to be a seemingly normal mercenary that is oddly way stronger than the rest), except him and his team are made of a weird and possibly digital material (final judgement) before Eggman has his hands on the Ruby, and Eggman’s plans backfired so hard that Infinite almost killed him.
He’s an in-between of a mech and an organic lifeform, just like Sage. A great vessel to be fused with the phantom ruby energy.

Sonic Generations’ Egg Dragoon is in my opinion a great boss battle. In Unleashed its intensity came from the setting and dialogue. In generations this intensity comes from the mechanics. The boss fight is like a final checklist testing to see if you understand the different mechanics you learn over the course of the game for controlling modern sonic. When watching gameplay of the fight a lot of this is lost but when actually fighting it you kinda understand. Sonic Generations is one of my favorite sonic games and i have really fond memories of playing it when it first came out. The bosses in Generations exist sort of in a vacuum when you fight then but I feel the game does a good job of recontextualizing the boss fights

One little mistake that you made: Eggman can use the fire strip in generations. You only showed footage while being on the rails and since eggman knows he can’t hit you there with the fire strip he doesn’t use it. But while running on the ground he can say something like: „Burn, burn to ashes“ and use the fire strip. Later when you already did a lot of damage he starts using the split attack where he splits his mech to use the ice and fire attack simultaneously.

Same boat on never getting to Egg Dragoon in Unleashed, but the fight in Generations is actually my favorite boss fight in the game. I remember playing it about 3 time a day. I think it might be the fun aspect, that Sonic and Eggman were having fun. I get that it's not as serious as the original fight, but it's not supposed to be. The Eggman in in Generations isn't livid anymore, it's the 300 IQ Eggman that's planning to lose the battle for the war
The Dragoon fight in Forces, however, was irresponsible.

In the og dragoon theme, there was a subtle droning violin that added a sort of urgency, and the main trmpet sounded quicker and sharper.
In the genorations version, the violin was replaced by a deep tuba, almost as if to give off a sort of grandiose feel while the trumpet sounds smoother and less panicked

What I can say about each version of the egg dragoon is that eggman is increasingly calmer, and the most remembered thing about the first battle is that he was completely unhinged and even more so with the original theme you could tell this, given the fact that eggman He rushed and used a prototype before fully testing the robot, I feel that the next one in generations was the full version of this plus it added more functions to defeat Sonic. In generations this essence is completely lost but it is complemented by the fact that Eggman now improved it and even if he loses, he knows that he has a time eater for later, literally the guy improved the egg dragoon for this fight and this is completely ruined in the execution of the battle for the rails that leaves all the creative attacks such as the lines of fire or the freezing rays that he launches from his feet in the background. In Forces it is more or less explained why he is so degraded taking into account the dialogue that he lost 10% of his abilities but Tails calls him a liar, maybe this egg dragoon is only what Eggman was able to restore from the original and it is not complete , it lost all the charisma and could have been more creative about it with this issue, I only feel the essence that Eggman once again uses an incomplete robot to defeat Sonic but this is lost since it is classic Sonic and how the execution of the boss is very disappointing

Excellent video. Just one thing I wanted to point out: back in Unleashed, Eggman promised to build a "Prototype 2", and he actually kept that promise. If you examine the Egg Dragoon from Generations, you will notice that it's not the same robot. It's way bigger and has new attacks, which serves as a clue to Eggman's involvement in the overall plot, since the only bosses with strange changes are the Death Egg Robot (is way bigger than the Sonic 2 one) and the Egg Dragoon. But other thing that you can notice in Sonic Forces is that the model of the Egg Dragoon is slightly dirty and is identical to the model we see in Generations, showing that Eggman didn't even bother to fix it properly, so he quite literally did Egg Dragoon dirty.

Imma say it. I really like Eggman land and feel like it's the perfect partner for Egg Dragoon.
Eggman has been talking about Eggman land for over 10 years at this point. And when you finally get to the end of the marathon you see this beast of a Mecha.
Probably Eggman's coolest mecha. It doesn't look like his other mechas. And the soundtrack is amazing. The beats intense and bombastic, constantly ebbing and flowing. Remember your falling to the earths core. This is do or die. It's a perfect fusion of cinematic and gameplay.
You may or may not know, but the boss is "timed." In the second phase, eggman will intermittently destroy the stage. Till leaving you with just one. At which point desperately Chip and Sonic will point out it's the end of the road. If you still fail to beat him, he will destroy the stage and you will die.
I will say this in defense of generations. I think the change of theme is just to the dynamic of the fight. Now being a high speed chase, instead of a 1v1 brawl.
Frontiers is just bad lol. Reskin it as a Random Giant Egg pawn, and there would be no difference. Nothing about this is Egg Dragoon.
I hope they don't try and "normalize" it as just another mech he always has on standby like his Eggmobile

I'm so glad you made this video. The Egg Dragoon is my favorite Sonic boss in so many criteria. Like you said, I love the atmosphere SO so much. Sonic in his more aggressive Werehog form, having destroyed the mechanical paradise his nemesis has spent so many years trying to realize, careening down towards the center of the earth on rubble as Eggman is so mad he's no longer toying around with their rivalry as usual, actually fighting to kill for once.
Outside the classics, this is the first time it feels like Sonic and Eggman are truly and earnestly giving it their all against each other, going head to head purely for the sakes of their egos and hatred for each other in that moment. They are no longer obstacles in each others' way; they themselves ARE the final objective. It's exhilarating.
And musically? It's my favorite boss theme of all time. I fell in love the first time I heard it as a kid, and that love has only gotten stronger with time. I even appreciate the Generations remix; it's inferior to the original, but I love the song so much that I will graciously take any crumbs, any remix and mashup I can get my hands on, official or fanmade, to experience my favorite boss battle song in a new way.
So imagine my utter disappointment when my favorite Sonic boss was announced to be returning in Forces, only for it to be reduced to the disappointment it was, and its theme NOT EVEN BEING A REMIX OF THE ORIGINAL SONG.
Glad there are other Egg Dragoon lovers like me out there. Even if it never returns, I do hope we get a Sonic/Eggman clash as heated as this one again someday, and with a theme on par with, if not surpassing, the Egg Dragoon's.

At this point in the series, eggman has had enough of sonic, even says during the fight “just give up and DIE already”. He isn’t holding back, he wants Sonic DEAD, all his work, all his plans, to him this is his magnum opus, his ultimate weapon.
And sonic knows this too, no quips, no jokes, this is serious.
Even the setting, a platform falling into the very core of the earth, this is it, he wants you dead. This is between sonic and eggman, one last fight, eggman has sonic where he wants him, and the only way out of this is through HIM

There’s a really interesting fact about the fight in Unleashed HD a lot of people would miss: you’re actually on a timer to beat Eggman. Through out the fight, Eggman will use his drill missile to destroy the platform you’re standing on. If you take too long, you’ll eventually run out of platforms and Eggman gives a terrifying victory speech. “Ga hahaha! There’s nowhere left to run! It’s time to end this, Sonic!”
