- One of the endings of Elden Ring was mistranslated. In this video, I explain the mistranslations, confirm with outside sources that they indeed are mistranslations, and talk about the lore implications of the original Japanese lines that FromSoft wrote. Spoiler: the Age of the Stars is still the best ending.

I feel the translation issues change the meaning / feeling quite a bit. The difference between "me and Ranni" going on a thousand year journey of fear, darkness and loneliness, and "all of humanity" going on such a journey, is extremely significant. Feels like I failed humanity in the latter, and a self sacrifice to save humanity in the former.
Definitely. The official lines from Ranni imply an anti-humanist ethic where we are all see our individuality dissolve into an amalgam against our will, while the better translation offers quite a different picture.
The other ending I'm curious about is the one involving Fia, because that one seemed to me like it might be the best in the sense of restoring death to its rightful place in the cycle of souls, but all we get is a generic "Age of Dusk" and no explanation when choosing it, which makes it seem like it's intended to be received as a bad ending, because death is inherently looked upon in a negative light, unduly. :)
@@AlexandrosV88 "where we are all see our individuality dissolve into an amalgam against our will" is literally the Frenzied flame Ending as that is what the "One Great" essentially is. Ranni is against that ending so simply due to the process of elimination that shouldn't be interpreted (and isn't) what the in-game dialogue is implying.
The crux of the mistranslation is that rather than saying everyone needs to go "on a thousand year journey of fear, darkness, and loneliness" it is just Ranni and potentially your tarnished that needs to do it. Let us assume the mistranslation is correct for a moment, the "Journey" Ranni talks about could be purely metaphorical in nature in which case what Ranni is saying is that Humanity is entering into an age of "fear, darkness, and loneliness" due to the absence of the order in which she took/planned to take away not that humanity was going to lose all sense of individuality.

It is, for what i understand its kinda like the english imply that WE all are kinda fucked in this ending, doomed by diving into some loneliness darkness privated with feeling, souls and so, making ranni quest a kinda sad and evil end as we all fall because of her quest.
But the original ending seems to imply that life itself is a mix of various stuff good and bad and that to prevent the bad stuff from humanity SHE exile herself with those darkness and so goes on a loneliness path to save us all, making her kinda a saint and the big hero sacrificing herself for us all.
Its weird as a misstranlation has a massive shift in the story making a pure saint into a little bitch cursing us all, thats a little BIT massive in term of mistake !
I like the latter option more because it means all of humanity gets to experience it all together not being labeled tarnished or being slaves as an omen. Also those feelings are a part of humanity and without the golden order some people would be uncomfortable in those ways.
Actually, the Japanese text makes the best ending seem even better in my opinion.

@@belisarius6949 Ranni and the tarnished existence prove that there is free will under the greater will. Ironically Blaidd is one of the people who are proven not to have free will. the endings from all fromsoft games weren’t meant to be perfect. Ranni literally got her entire fate stopped because radahn existed. The age of the stars will come to a end like every other age and it will be ultimately meaningless.
@@DrooledOn Blaidd doesnt have free will...BECAUSE of the greater will. He's a sleeper agent meant to kill Ranni if she steps out of line. Thats what motivates Ranni, removing the greater will from the world so people can make their own destiny. And Ranni would know what its like having destiny thust upon you, its why she killed her physical body.

Im sure Ranni would think it was worth it even if people only got to live free for a little while. They will have at least got to experience it and maybe that would be enough for people to fight to keep it.

The Japanese one just clearly states Ranni's Goal of "Separating the Practical Divine Intervention" that the order imposed.
The Chill Night is the path of unknown that would become knowable through the thousand years of voyage. Kinda like Evolution or Years of Progress of Humanity.
The removing of senses of humans to the gods mirrors our reality, that humans can't literally see, hear, or touch god. And can only take guidance through self or communal interpretations.
Our and Ranni's voyage has already started in the cutscene, hear me out guys.
I would call this whole situation a "misinterpretation of the translation", because as soon as I read the original Japaneese dialogue, the one that was translated started to feel very similiar and make so much more sense to me. It's just not that straight forward, which is good in my honest opinion, leaves more room to interpretation. More or less. I think we just should not take Ranni's words literally when she says about the "chill night" and a "thousand year voyage", because it was never about whole humanity (even if she does mention whole humanity in the English dialogue) going into space, rather it is about humanity living in the same place and the same plane of existence as before, but without having the Golden Order and it's rules at the reach of it's fingers (see what I did there). While our beautiful Moon Maiden restores the head of Marika and the whole order of the world, she has already taken it (and us too) far away from the sight and touch of humanity. That way all of life is protected from being "too close to god" and it can be enjoyed undistorted and un-manipulated.
I honestly dont know how people interpret this ending as ominous or dark. She is straight up making an oath to all living things to bring about an age of stars. Naturally occurring things that can be used as guidance as opposed to looking towards gods or grace for guidance. She is saying that the journey will be cold, dark and lonely because it will be difficult for the world that has been led by the greater will for so long and nobody is used to that.
The speech Ranni gives in her rise can make it feel like you are living behind a world without emotions, sight, or touch. Granted I hadn't paid too much attention at the time, but it seemed to me like you were leaving a desolated world while going on a honeymoon with Ranni in her journey to ascention. Of course it was possible to deduce the correct meaning anyway, but left a lot more room for error in understanding.
That's not what it seemed like, seems more like we are destroying everything then separating people from emotion and fear then finally taking there souls . Lol seemed bad

Not necessarily, the stars in the game also mean astel, and the voidborn, who seem tied to both rannis quest and ending, so it could be another horror in a way
@@Dongufo15 to me it sounded like what she was removing was not emotions sight and touch, but the cosmos themselves in a way. making the ability of interaction with the distant cosmos, and thus other outer gods, and impossibility.

Ok so instead of leading the new order we take the old order away so that life in the lands between may find their independence. And the player goes on an eternal honey moon with Ranni. So it’s more or less the same ending.
I definitely thought it was odd that it felt ominous while also behaving as if it was a " good " ending. I think this is a big deal, not at all is this slight. Still love the game for sure , but the translation is important even vital
A big clue for me was the inscription Ranni left on the dark moon ring. "Whoever thou mayest be, take not the ring from this place, the solitude beyond the night is better mine alone." This didn't match with what the ending implied and her taking her order away. I wasn't surprised when it turned out there was a mistranslation.

what I got from the en:
the chill night is not beginning? yes it is, when you finish the game (with this ending)
"encompasses all" is not referring to the people but for all aspects of existence like the old gold order
when she says in en "reaching the great beyond" is the same as "be kept far away" from the jp
when you have your god literally on you backyard it becomes a certainty, if you don't believe you're a heretic because you can literally see it every day, no questions asked, your faith must be certain, so for Ranni is better to "have the certainties of sight, emotion, faith, and touch... all become impossibilities" (about the order as you said 2:21)
and the journey of "fear, doubt, and loneliness" is for everyone in the sense that you're on your on now, no great order dictating your life, so prepare to feel all those things without something answering back

Actually some Japanese think the English version is correct. One guy on tweet said the plot was originally written in English so the Japanese version is wrong.
Not quite sure about the collaboration between development teams, so it's hard to know the original intention though
For what i understand the english is NOT the game story, its just lore, so george RRM wrote the lore, like describe the land between, write various characters, their personality probably and stuff, but then fromsoft based on that pick each elements and tide them to create the story.
So the english cant be right as the english dont have the story they have the lore, which arent the same, lore is part of the story but the story is the big everything including the lore
That doesn't make much sense, most of Elden Ring was written by fromsoft wich is japanese, and Japan isn't europe, it isn't common for a Japanese to speak english fluently so it definetly doesn't make sense for a native japanese studio to write the script in english. I'm an European who has studied english for almost 10 years at school + watches a tons of videos in english and I still didn't know some of the words in Elden Ring's english version, I doubt it would have been a wise choice for the studio to write the plot for Elden Ring in english
The english translations do obscure quit a bit, like how the jp version directly states that okina is shura from sekiro

I prefer the english version of the final speech, but the original version of the one in the room makes the biggest difference clarifying that it's the greater will's order wich is being removed

this whole thangs been confusing. i keep seeing comments from japanese-english speakers saying that the way the fan saying it's mistranslated translated it is missing contexual cues that the english translators tried to include, and that the english version ingame is basically closer to the sentiment of the text than the word-by-word version the fan came up with. unfortunately, i dont speak japanese, so who knows lol. that said, i like the english translated version, i think it gives the sense that ranni is being honest with the detriments that come from her intentions, rather than painting it in an ideologically rose colored tint. likewise, i think it fits her character better as someone ruthlessly pursuing her freedom to whatever detriment may come, rather than as some kind of idealist.

It does beg the question of what else is mistranslated in the game tho.
Justice to Ranni's questline should be done. Mistranslation on this fragmented lore is unforgivable, it will leave room to open to more interpretation to already convoluted narration.

@@onthespiral4054 yeah i knew it from the start just after i bough it and watch the introduction that the naration was way different than other soul game and was gonna be a mess. The more i play the more i felt that, and apparently the game is filled with so many mistakes more than ever, that kinda ruined the experience on a game that is already flawed in various aspect.
The game is still overall fine, especialy as it has absolutly no contender as devs those day cant make real game and story anyway so, elden ring is still one of the best game we actualy have, but it leave a kinda bitter taste to know that there are that many mistake and especialy that heavy into the game
@@Shiirya I will say this: I have played it again but online. My first run was solo and offline. The game is far better in that regard and designed for it.

At 1:22 the only difference I can see is that the "correct" one says it's infinitely far away, while the "incorrect" one says it's already there surrounding them

Is the name of Ranni's ending officially 'Age of THE stars' or 'Age of stars'? Both the achievement and Ranni say Age of THE stars but the official guide and many users use the truncated way Age of Stars
For how the game treats stuff this is clearly a huge thing because if this is wrong imagine how many more things are wrong, like it's like taking a old story translating it to a different languages and then conbining it in one text wich the translator doesn't have any understanding of the actual real original story. It's a very interesting the combination of G.R.Martin and Miyazaki, so then how would two different people react when they have different ideas on the advancement of the story or the endings, and then it's just a thing that not even the game texts are correct. Maybe is a fun challenge where we need to ask what is the most important thing in the game related to lore, the visuals, NPC's or just text that each item have.

I think this changes much about what we know about Elden ring itself but if there ever is one it’s sequel. Assuming this is the cannon ending, and the lore and story of the sequel would follow this ending, there is a very big difference between taking the fight to the greater will and going to a place where the greater wills influence can’t reach. Those are very different things and I think the latter would be harder to make a sequel out of. Interesting either way tho
It may be a fault in myself, but did you clarify that by “order” she literally means the physical Elden Ring? This object of power that defines physics in the Lands Between and begets envy and greed and lust for power is the root cause of the problems. Redesign/repair the ring but take it out of reach for a while. Thousand years go by, come back and see the progress. Make changes if required, head out again. The best way.

Nice to have that cleared up, and you're right, the mistranslation stands as the absolute version. I actually like the semi-sinister nature of it myself.
It does make more sense that what Ranni wanted was to throw off the shackles of the past and let people determine their own destinies, rather than plunge the world into eternal night (though still free from the Order) as implied in English. This just reaffirms I made the correct choice following my witchy waifu.
The only question is how much of the game is actually mistranslated?

@@heuvelke1065 There'll never be a sequel to Elden Ring. The only reason there was sequels to Dark Souls is because the higher ups at Fromsoft started the project without Miyazaki's knowledge while he was working on Bloodborne, and had to call him back to do the DLC to fix their mistake. Miyazaki *hates* sequels, and with the level of prestige he has right now, there's no way they'd go over his head to make an Elden Ring 2 the way they did Dark Souls 2.

I’ve been discussing this thought with others about the idea of if mistranslations are even worth looking into. From comments I received on my video about this, it was pretty split 50/50 between people that understood the English and those that thought it was ominous. I agree with you, if English is the only audio recorded, then English should be the main concern.
Although the line about making senses all become impossibilities was very egregious IMO.
Yeah the impossibilities line really needs to be stretched in english to get to the original meeting. I am sympathetic to looking to the japanese cause it can have a clear and intended answer, but at the same time the english voices are all we got. If theyre really un-understandable, then going to the Japanese can help.

I mean it is, you know that you can write the same 2 sentence but by just switching side for 2 word you can literaly change the whole meaning of the sentence but still having the exact same words in it right ?
But thats not even what happened here, because when you translate, you generaly cant have a full literal translation, you have to rephrase some words to feel more organic to the receiving language, and thats where the tricky parts come, because you have to changes, add or remove some words to feels more natural in the translated language BUT with keeping the original meaning fo the sentence.
Mistakes happen a lots during this process, its a bit sad that it happen in a game like elden ring where story is actualy one of the strongest point of souls gamen and a shame that it happen on something as important as an ending AND ranni's one as its one of the main NPC

the only differences lie in the analysis of the "journalist" who did the original article, which are completely arbitrary and full of emotional biases
funnily enough those emotional biases are exactly how ranni tries to manipulate the player into doing her bidding

I still don’t get it, how does the golden order prevent freedom. Many characters and tarnished follow other than golden order. With the restoration of the elden ring endings there is a number of options, goldmask, fia? Doesn’t that show it doesn’t inhibit freedom or isn’t in a position to do so, even if it wanted. I feel like Rannis ending showing a freedom of choice being afforded requires a lot projecting.
The Golden Order/Elden Ring/Greater Will etc. had a lot of influence. Wars were fought to bring the Order to power. Shadows were given to Empyreans to keep them in line. The Two Fingers dictated how people should behave. People who opposed the Order were hunted down and killed, or worse. The Elden Beast was an agent sent to the Lands Between to subjugate the world. Restoring the Ring means continuing the cycle of oppression. This was what Ranni rejected.
Not saying the world would be "better" without the Golden Order. But at least people could now decide their own fate, rather than being under the thumb of an alien entity.
I think you misunderstood the meaning on a fundamental level
What about the greater will and other outer gods? The whole point of the age of stars ending is to escape their control
The Golden Order, and by extension, the Greater Will, saw heresies everywhere. Forces that would threaten their order were persecuted and even genocided. The Fire Giants are all gone save for one, who was cursed by Queen Marika herself. The Godskin Apostles wielded a Black Flame that could rend and burn away the bodies and souls of even gods. The dragon cult that formed out of Godwyn and Placidusax's friendship lead to Dragon Magic and by extension, thr dragons themselves, being accepted and seen as in line with the Golden Order and not heretical beings born outside its grace.
Speaking of being born outside of Grace, Omenkind was seen as a curse. Their very existence was made into a shame that could only be righted by casting them away, devoid of the Erdtree's grace and connected to a powerful magic we still do not understand. Regardless, they were hunted and used as fodder for the armies of the Order. For no other reason than the Greater Will "decreed" their existence offensive to the Golden Order, and thus were abandoned by their families, their horns violently removed (unless you were of noble birth), and casting them into the sewers of Leyndell. The Greater Will had anything it didnt see as perfect violently dealt with. And those of Empyrean flesh were tied to the motives of the Greater Will, never able to go against its wishes. Ranni casting away her empyrean flesh allowed her to escape the path the Greater Will and the Two Fingers had in store for her, and when we aid her in killing her brother, General Radahn, we set her destiny as dictated by the stars back into motion.
Its not so much the Greater Will and the Golden Order prevent freedom, it is more they only allow freedom within the confines of what the Order and the Greater Will decide aren't heretical. As a certain Pope Turtle once said; All Things Can Be Conjoined.
Ranni was clear that she didnt want company on her dark path. She should walk it alone. To take all of life with her wouldnt make much sense. It was a personal journey of her and her alone. By the end of her quest she even asks if you actually want to still be by her side on this path. She is certainly not enforcing it into anyone. I was a little confused with how some of her dialogue contradicted itself by the end. Like why she wanted to take her order to the stars separating it from life and soul, but then also taking the life and souls with her and her new order away from this soil. Kinda negating the whole separation on the first place.
This translation makes way more sense to me.
I agree that the "more accurate" Japanese text really doesn't change anything.
With their experience, budget, and attention to detail, I doubt FromSoft considers this is in any way a case of "mistranslation." They know what they are doing, and they love to keep things vague and ominous. That's... kinda their thing.
I disagree that it doesn't change anything. The more accurate translation alters a major perception of Ranni removing the ability for people to experience emotions and senses, into her taking a great burden upon herself to move a source of power and corruption out of reach for the hopeful betterment of the world.
And considering there haven't been serious mistranslations to the degree as this one in previous fromsoft games, combined with the coverage that this is getting, I would also disagree with the video's take that there is a low chance of it being changed. With the popularity of Elden Ring, and especially the popularity of Ranni and her ending, the outcry of this mistranslation could be enough for it to actually be altered. At least it has better chances than I think people might expect.

Maybe they weren't mistanslations maybe they decided to change the lines at time of recording in order to make it less straightforward
From the beginning Ranni’s path felt right to me so I just went for it then looked up the other “5” endings after 1st play through to see if I was mistaken, which I was not. The Japanese translation strengthens that choice. Awesome video, subbed.
I like that Ranni's lines become more ominous in English because they also feel a lot more in line with existentialist philosophy. Can't remember a single existentialist writer that didn't say something similar to the whole "fear, doubt, and loneliness" lol.

Ranni in both languages says the same thing.
Sure not word for word as that's not possible given the difference in the languags but both convey the same stuff.
The japanese speakers in the article and that I know irl and had look it over were like yeah this is a mistranslation. So i dont think we can say she's saying the same thing. That said, I got the correct intended vibe/direction from the mistranslation, so it can be the wrong words, but not so wrong that it necessarily leads to a wrong interpretation. But for many it did, so Id say the issues are real
I had a feeling at the end when she said “a new age of darkness and loneliness” or sum like that, that it wasn’t a good ending. Never knew why people automatically assumed it was the good ending and she was doing good without ever thinking twice about it and what she said.
I think that meant moon is gonna protect the land between from the outer gods influence
I don't get why people lack the ability to think abstractly. I figured she was talking metaphorically and that she would remove the order to a distance away. Where people cannot directly interact with it. Allowing them to build their own order and decide for themselves what to do. It would mean there would be no certainty if what they were doing was right. An age where people would live in fear and doubt because they have to make their own decisions. No gods to hold their hand.
Between Goldmask and Ranni, what do you think the big differences are?
If I understand correctly, Ranni removes the golden order entirely from peoples lives. The machine of the universe still works, but no one can interact with it directly. Whereas Goldmask removes the fickle nature of gods. The order is no longer bound to human-like whims.
Goldmask turns the elden ring into a machine, more or less. The Golden Order has no influence from gods or emotions. if mistranslation, either intentional or accidental, weren't already a really big problem in media- such as games, manga, anime, and at this point who knows what else considering the track record of translators- i would be more inclined to agree with you.
the fact that it is so rampant indicates to me that it's a much bigger and more serious issue than you seem to suggest. for example, what if someone translated this review into japanese and it ended up changing the meaning so that it seems to suggest you thought the frenzied flame ending was the best? i can't see how that would be acceptable in any way.
whatever else media may be there is a significant part of it that is art and the intentions of artists should be respected. the fact that in many cases these "mistranslations" are in fact intentional, and the translators make these changes to express themselves instead of the medium's creators is stunning, gross, and shouldn't be considered appropriate in any way.
this kind of reminds me of a similar situation in Evangelion, where dialogue that didn’t make it, for one reason or another, into the finished product can change ones perspective.
there is a song with lyrics written by Evangelion director Hideaki Anno called “Everything You’ve Ever Dreamed” that was intended to be the “sister song” of Komm Susser Tod, but was cut. The original Japanese lyrics give an unprecedented level of depth to the relationships between the protagonist and the supporting cast, but the song was cut, and not many people even know the original lyrics exist.
Isn’t this just the Age of Men from Dark Souls? I e no gods, but humanity is plunged into a long darkness/night, and people tend to agree this is the bad or at least worse than being than the Gwyn one, so why is this one “positive”?

I remember going on the elden ring reddit and finding this article, and it cleared up my confusion.
From the 3 endings, this one is definitely the good ending.
I found the Frenzied Flame ending more of a punishment to everyone just for sticking it to the Greater Will and it doesn't solve the anything, just destroyed the world. The normal ending just keeps the status quo, where the greater will is still in control and doesn't solve the issue in the game. Plus all the things before can happen again one day. Age of the Stars is the only ending that fixes the problem in the Lands in Between, which is how far strick order can really mess things up. You take away order so that people can think for themselves and won't be discriminated, just look at the merchants clan who summoned the Frenzied flame because of the Greater Will being a dick.
All in all, hands down one of my all time favorite games, both story and gameplay
since the specific lines regarding Ranni's ending have become so publicized I would be genuinely amazed if we never saw this fixed in a future patch. I'd bet they're literally working on it right now, even.
I highly doubt they're gonna get the same voice actor, or anyone for that matter, to record a proper translation of any mistranslated dialog. That has never been FromSofts way of doing things likely out of stubborn pride or something.

I really really hope they get the Actress to re-record her lines with a better translation: Because I LOVE Ranni's character, and I feel that her motivations and goals are Awesome, and I don't want non-superfans to misinterpret her as "evil". I think the original translation is great, it’s just being misinterpreted because of this really unofficial translation claiming to be different.
The unofficial translation is almost exactly the same, just written way more plainly. The original translation makes the assumption that the player will use context and tone when interpreting what Ranni is saying.
Way too many people read the original as evil or antagonistic.

Iirc all the other games were first written in English and then translated to Japanese so if Elden Ring was written in the same manner, that further complicates the translation issue.
Sekiro may be an exception to this idk, but I know for certain that Bloodborne and DS3 were first scripted in English.

I like the English because it's similar to the dark endings in Souls, where we have to face uncertainty - negative emotions - in order to cut a new path. The Japanese makes it all a bit too simple, a sort of "everyone can be happy" because we'll go off and do our new order over here.The English makes Ranni feel more megalomeniacal, which someone has to be in order to impose a new order on anyone.

Bottom line is, whatever is in the game is canon, regardless of original written intent. Until such time as Fromsoft re-record the lines. Which they won't.
I don't know if I would interpret the translated ending as implying that people have any more freedom or individuality than before, just that they think they do because they will not be able to see and interact with the order that dictates their lives and fates
Starving to death because nature just wasn't on your side (you got unlucky, you didn't plan well) and starving to death because the person in charge of food just arbitrarily decided you shouldn't get any doesn't change much for the dead but I'd say you are much more free in the former.
I think it makes sense the witch from a culture of inquiry and science prefers the order of nature, where you have a chance to improve life you can only figure out the way the rules work. We see in the Greater Will seemingly banishes and punishes people for obtuse and changing reasons. Rewarding people who are useful, tarnishing them once they aren't. Genociding races that oppose them. The Greater Will tarnished a believer such as gold mask for unknown reasons when it was powerful, and was willing to let someone as deranged as dung eater take over if it means it meant it could regain its power. The Greater Will doesn't seem like something you can learn about, it has its own goals and treats you as a tool to be used or discarded.
@@TombaFanatic Sure, but I took Ranni's line about life and souls being tightly bound to order as implying that that was inevitable, in which case its a choice of being controlled by a strange order outside of your understanding or being controlled by a very present visible order that also actively rules the land you live in.
There's also all that stuff about how fate used to be determined by the stars (like in our-world astrology), and the Carian royal family's fate being in the stars, and also a lot of hints that some, if not all stars and celestial bodies are actually sentient organisms. So in light of that it seems like Ranni has recognized the obvious flaws in the Greater Will and has decided to cast her lot in with the other powerful but more mysterious forces that her family has long been fascinated by (but also sort of become one of them too? seems unclear what exactly Ranni and Tarnished get up to out there...). It sort of seems like there isn't really an ending where the lands between are free of the influence of one lovecraftian space being or another- Goldmask's actually seems closer to that than Ranni's though.

To me the Frenzied Flame ending will always be the best one. Clean slate. Burn everything. Let whatever can rise from the ashes on its own, and destroy all the forces that broke the world into what it is. Also I appreciate that Shabriri, unlike everyone else, does not lie to you. I appreciate the honesty. Chaos should take the world, because that was always its natural state of being.

Sekiro had some heavily implied lore hidden within the Japanese. Which is warranted it is a game set during the end of the Sengoku period. Japanese history can be read and understood by outsiders but it isn’t our culture that we lived with for years.
Every Fromsoft game has translation issues. Both Bloodborne and DS2 has large chunks of lore that is not in the English version. Bloodborne because of how it is written in Japanese and focusing on a concept exclusive to Japanese culture. DS2 because it had three separate Translation companies do it.
Example for Bloodborne. It's about the concept of Kegare which means spiritual uncleanliness brought from menstruation, and child birth. and the game is steep in that concept and idea with the Healing Church seeking to destroy it entirely.
DS2 is just an incompetent and inconsistent translation. For example, Giant's Kinship is named the Resonance of Giants in Japanese. And the Giant King's soul makes it clear they are attacking Drangleic to reclaim what was stolen from them with not interest in conquest.

I took Rannis ending to mean "I'm taking the Elder Ring far away from here, away from the Greater Will and Outer Gods. Humans will now be in their own, alone in the universe, with only the stars to guide them" its a very Nihilist ending. Ranni is Nietzsche confirmed.

i saw it as ranni is the switch from a theistic worldview (greater will) to a deistic/pantheistic worldview (the primeval current as revealed by the study of the stars, with the moon as mediator). think she's more spinoza than neitzsche. neitzsche seems more like the current state of the game, everyone battling to be top ubermensch in the face of the death/corruption of god, and the necessary fracturing that comes with it. i kinda love that they don't sugar coat it and pretend the turn towards pantheism will produce some wonderfully free world, instead focusing on the 'fear, doubt and loneliness' that comes up in the existentialists.

@@MadLuigi Well, in my opinion it is because it eliminates order. In the base ending the Golden Order remains the same, in the Age of the Stars ending it's just replaced by an order under the Moon, in the Age of Order ending it's just made even more orderly, in the Age of Despair ending everyone is cursed but the order remains, and in the Age of the Duskborn the Rune of Death is simply returned to it's rightful place. But, in the Frenzied Flame ending, order is wiped out, a truly unique outcome compared to the rest. Also, the Age of Stars ending, while seeming the best, is basically just a redo of the Golden Order but different, Ranni being in control like Marika, having a consort like Marika in the player, etc... The only real main difference is that the order will be out of the reach of the people of the world, which is debatably a bad thing. Instead of having the Erdtree which is a tree that can be harmed via certain means and be overthrown, the Moon cannot, the people no longer can rebel against the order because it is out of their reach. These are all just my opinions though.

You’re kind of missing the theme if you think “order equals evil” when it’s really saying “absolute order is just as bad as absolute chaos”. Ranni’s ending balances the two extremes.

Even if it's a mistranslation, I think it's a Death of the Author situation. What the characters in the story actually say with their mouths is the final canon, not what the intention may have been from a script that doesn't exist for English players.
Seems strange not to care about about mistranslations. If you don't care about what the author/authors meant, you essentially only care about your own headcanon.

It's not mistranslated, it's just written in Middle English.
I don't think middle English is enough to change Ranni and Tarnished going away on a journey of darkness, fear and loneliness (japanese) to saying oh well this new order will bring darkness, fear, and loneliness to humanity. JP ver basically says she's going away and will go though that darkness, fear, and loneliness so that people don't have to. When the meaning, the message changes from one language to the next, it IS a mistranslation.

For heavens sake, this isn't Demon's Souls. From is a big deal now. The people doing the localization for this game understood what they were reading, and were likely directed to preserve an aspect of mystery to the character. They did so without changing the base meaning.

Japanese text is literally ALWAYS more accurate. This is basically another parallel with anime/manga in general where the English language manages to obnoxiously dilute profound concepts in translation.
Matter of fact I’ll even go a step further in saying that English has done this with every concept known to the ancient man. English is a drab, heavily trivialized language with TONS of bastardized short forms, simplifications & Ofc the more spin-off gimmicky words derived from ancient languages (e.g Sanskrit, Akkadian, Latin, Hebrew/Arabic etc).
Fact is most English words would’ve come about it in disagreeable ways that could’ve been considered rude or disrespectful, but they managed to just.. stick, in vocabulary (which is how all languages evolve).
To put it simply (ironic): in general, from the Concept of time.. to Elden Ring the adventure video game.. to Anime series.. to the BIBLE & holy texts themselves, you just cannot fully trust an Anglicized translation at face-value. It’s kind of a copy cat, descendant, relatively new form of communication which just makes everything else ... *richer* when gotten from their source, so to speak.
Most people who speak 3+ languages will tell you English is the easiest one. Know why? Cuz it’s diluted. Which isn’t a bad thing. Makes it a very good reference point. Also Makes it easier for most people to engage in.
I hate to break this to you, but if George RR Martin wrote all the lore......the Japanese version is the mistranslation.
