Many compressors have a duty cycle. The cheap one you toasted probably has a two minute on five minute off duty cycle. If this is followed the plastic piston last longer. I'd be curious to what the instructions on that compressor say. It would definitely take much much longer to fill a tire but in a pinch or lack of funds it is better than a bicycle pump!!!

Every time I see a compressor test I hope to see the Viair dual 400 go up against the ARB dual, but nobody seems to know it exists. It's about $300 so almost half the cost of the ARB, and has higher volume than the ARB -ie airs up tires faster. The only drawback is it's rated 33% duty cycle vs the 100% ARB (note Viair does offer it as 100% as well with a reduced volume). HOWEVER - I've used mine to air up 10 tires back-to-back (playing in the dunes with friends who didn't have compressors) without overheating and most people report they've never hit the thermal cut-out. The 33% is EXTREMELY conservative and I've never come close to hitting the thermal cut-off doing one truck/4 tires. I've also 'raced' mine against identical trucks with the same size tires and yes, it's faster if only a bit. But again - half the price!
I can only guess people don't use it in the comparisons because it requires you to mount it yourself instead of coming with pre-fab bolt in no-drill kits like the ARB? But come on - we're wheelers here. I thought only mall-crawlers needed pre-fab bolt ons?

Thank you for another great episode! An important thing to remember when comparing price is that a Power Tank is sold as a complete system with a hose, brackets, and tire inflator while most compressors sell those items separately for an added price. Also included in the price of a Power Tank is a limited lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. No other portable air system gives you that. There are folks out wheeling with Power Tanks that are 20+ years old and have outlasted the vehicles they were originally mounted to!

Arb has given me excellent customer service on my dual arb. A phone call has always gotten me replacement parts or an rma with a prepaid way ill from Canada to send it in for repairs. My compressor is now 8 years old and with a phone call and telling them my sn arb shipped me a complete motor assembly after asking if I prefred them to ship the part or rma the entire winch. To say that compressor manufacturers don't have good customer service is really not fair and is a bit of a low blow coming from a manufacturer. You are quite fair to mention the added cost of brackets, hoses, and chucks though.

Consider adding a small tank to your dual arb. I run mine with 37s that I usually drop to 4psi I kick the compressor on while I'm getting my hoses out and have a full tank ready when I start filling. Then while you are switching wheels your compressor is still doing work and speeding up your fill even faster.

I have the big portable compressor from harbor freight, which was about $60 i think. had it for about 5 years. first use, we just ran it till it overheated and had to wait for it to cool off....took forever. after that i set out to improve it's cooling. I added a small heat sync from an old computer to the top of the cylinder and actually modified it so that it draws air through the motor to help cool it. after that it aired up 2 trucks with 31's before overheating. but then I knew it was gonna take forever to cool down and air up my truck with 33's, and I had a genius idea to take a wet rag and cool it off faster. it was so hot the rag was sizzling when i touched it! but that did the trick and ever since I always use a wet rag to help cool it off, plus it gives you something to do while waiting for it to air up.
my old truck had 33's, my new truck has 32's and it takes about 20 min to air up from 12-15psi to 35psi. with my slick water cooled trick I have run it continuously for over an hour doing 3 trucks when I was the only one with a compressor! maybe i need some better prepared friends. lol

It's quiet and takes like 30 seconds or so to fill up my 33s. It's expensive, but I believe in their product and I expect it to last a long while. You have to swap the tank every few trips, but to me it's worth the speed and the sound. You also have the ability to move it and use it outside the Jeep, run tools, and even re-seat beads. (obviously I don't need to be considered for the giveaway)

I use a VIAIR 450PA, works great and I built a hose to fill 4 tires, or deflate 4 tires, at one time. From 15 psi to 30 psi takes just a few minutes. I never timed it, but it is a great compressor that has been around a while. It has 100% duty cycle and uses battery clamps so it is portable. At the time it was about $100-$150 cheaper than the ARB. It has an automatic shut off when the hose hits 150 psi, and it also will shut down if the temperature gets too hot. VIAIR is a very good compressor.

That's a setup I've really been considering, however I don't think the valve is slowing down the compressor. The reason I say this is I run a small 1L tank with my dual arb. By the time I finish a tire I have time to put the valve cap back on and move to the next tire and take its cap off and the tank is still not quite finished refilling. This is with standard valves.

I bought a pair of portable heavy-duty dual-cylinder portable air compressors made by Tirewell off of Amazon. They have a duty rating of 10 minutes on, 15 minutes off. I actually bought only one initially, and found that it takes about 5 minutes to inflate a 31" tire from 15 psi to 35 psi. That meant I had to do two tires, and then let it rest for 15 minutes, and then do the other two tires. That meant that it took me almost 40 minutes to inflate my tires. So I bought a second one and I run them at the same time. I've had them for a few years and have probably aired up 10 times and they show no indication of having issues. My process takes about 10 minutes now, and the two compressors combined cost about 130 bucks.

Check out the MoorFlat kit to level pressure on all tires at once with the digital gauge. It's built like a TANK. Clip on vale adapters, etc. So worth the money, especially with honking tires of that size. You can also air down all 4 tires at once to the exact size you want within minutes.

I really like the idea of the dual ARB. The power tank is fast but comes with some extra hassle and a hard mounted air compressor is always there, doesn't need refills or much checking and takes up less space and you always have it. You're not gonna take it out when driving around town day to day and hit a nail and wish you had it. And cheaper in the long run because free air. Maybe if you're airing up and down constantly and those few minutes are super important the power tank would be worth it?

I run a 15lb P/Tank on my Raptor. Factory 35" tires and when I air down it's 24psi front and 22 in the rear. I'll air up to about 32 psi to get home. My local Airgas will fill while I wait. NOTE: the only way to really know how much CO2 is in the tank is to weigh it, P/Tank has a new smaller and less expensive digital scale for weighing tanks.I love this setup and of course I'm done airing up all 4 tires while most are still on their first tire...BUT this is not for everyone...you got a compressor?...you will never run out of air.
    Fun video thanks..

Out on the trail maybe? But after 'Tyre Extinguishers' have hit, all 4 will be down to 0, so thanks for the video. 11 minutes seems a hell of a long time all the same!

Just bought myself the larger Smittybilt portable compressor. Haven’t had the chance to use it yet because of obvious reasons lol but I’m on 35s plan to jump to 37s or 38s. I feel like it’ll perform well for the price. Dual ARB will happen one day. When my electric lockers are toast ad I go to air lockers most likely.

the Cheapo Portable air compressor is still really good on Bone Stock tires. 255/75R16 or such size for Light Truck / passenger car to help you get your Hauling truck out of the parking lot and to a gas station to get better air. I have a $30 Walmart bought compressor that i have used a number of times, to help friends and co-workers. Only takes a few minutes. There is no need to air up your tires in 1 minute or less, unless you are blocking a road, Your friends on the trail will understand.

Another good use for the power tank and the large air valve is if you roll the tyre off the bead and are able to half re-seat the bead you have enough flow to pop the tyre back on in most cases

Wow! I’ve been pushing my portable, but that could be a bad thing to have on the trail. Need the twin arb. That aired up so fast. I know I watched a sunset go too complete darkness waiting on my tires to air up once, and I’m always down to help out my group I’m with.
This is definitely a video many have thoughts on just because depending on how much you wheel may be the reason you go for one over the other, and then there are air lockers you can hook up also.
    Awesome video!

the bigger harbor freight portable compressor has impressed me since ive gotten it. i can air up all 4 of my 31s from 8 to 35 psi in under 20 minutes and i even aired a buddy up after working it so hard. it is a 30 amp air compressor tho you cant use the cig port you have to hook it to your battery.

My York compressor on my JL mounted to the harmonic balancer, without sacrificing anything, like A/C. Available from Off Road Only. I got the full air suspension from Steve, so it requires the longevity that an electric pump just can't keep up with.

Great video... I just got my arb twin put into my JT. It took 2 min 30 seconds per tire to fill from 13 to 25 psi on my 37’s... why did this take soo long... I was close to 9000 feet up in the mountains of Colorado. Cool to see that the compressors work faster at different elevations.

I work at a dealership and had my low tire light pop on today couldn’t find a nail and was like well maybe this will help me out on the trail this weekend just need to air up 😂

I run the ARB single n my TJ and a 20# co2 tank in our JKUR all on 35s. I love my tank but I will say that ARB customer service is outstanding an very helpful. I was 3 years out of warranty, had a piston failure and call them asking for a rebuild kit. they said they would send me a new motor unit with the built in piston...Far and beyond customer service. Forever an ARB customer when buying lockers and such in the future.
My 20# tank is from a home brew store and re do tank exchange for $8 per tank. Got the regulator off Amazon and been ballin for 2 years...I can air up a 35 about 28 times from 12 to 32psi (about 7 or 8 wheeling trips) per 20# tank.

There's going to be a difference between front tire and rear tire due to weight distribution. Which brings up another point, besides tire size and specification, vehicle weight is a factor. Your tests apply to Jeep weighted vehicles, which I get it, it's a Jeep channel. I found out when I went to a 3/4 ton Burb from a TJ, the single ARB would overheat and shut off midway thru the 4th tire and those were 33" BFG KO2s. I would run them at 55lbs on that truck, so a lot more air up time and weight to contend with. I had a little trick. I poured water on the compressor to cool it, and I could restart it to finish. I'm in a 7,000 lb + Power Wagon now with 37" Toyos, still with the same single ARB. I haven't really tested it out yet. The Toyos have really stout sidewalls so I actually run lower than the Burb. I run 45 front and 35 rear. It will be interesting to see how the single ARB does with that. In the long run, I know the dual ARB is the right scale for the heavier trucks not only in duty cycle but also speed convenience. It's no fun cooking in the heat and humidity while your waiting for tires to fill up.

I have 37s on my Ram 1500. I was going to get a Viair 400p or 440 portable, but I managed to catch someone selling a 10lb PowerTank for a REALLY good price and I picked it up. Takes me less than 5 minutes to air up all tires from 20psi to about 35-37psi. Now I want a 20lb tank for less fill ups because room isn't an issue for me, but I have to find a place to refill the tank for a descent price.

I have a portable Viair 400P for my Jeep, but I also have a Ryobi battery compressor I use for my riding mower, wheelbarrow, yard wagon, grandkids bikes, and it will even handle a passenger car tire. The little a Ryobi is extremely handy, but I would smoke it on the Jeep.

You do not need to remove your ac to run a york. You just need to run a mounting bracket under the battery box and bolt an auxiliary pulley onto the alternator to run the compressor. The york has an electromagnetic clutch attached so it dosent constantly stay on. The whole system can be built for a little over 100 bucks and it blows any other system out of the water with flows up to about 30cfm. The best setup is a york 210 with standard air compressor fittings drilled and tapped into your rim. 4x 35 inch tires can be filled from 5-30 psi in under a minute.
