On the West Coast, the situation is very much changed in the last four years or even more. Getting any at all, even for dental work, even one days worth or two days worth, has become increasingly difficult. The pendulum has swung so far to the other side that it’s hard to relate to some of the clips out here regarding this matter. One thing I will agree on though - It is a huge disaster and area that needs to be excepted and treated without judgment in stereotyping of people, especially those who got into that way without any knowledge of their own due to excessive Scripps from doctors.

You are awesome for turning something tragic into such a positive thing for addiction. It is something that needs more attention than many issues. The ripple affect from addict to family to community is devastating and needs to be priority in health care. I believe mental health issues must be addressed while in recovery. Thank you for your time to discuss this difficult topic.

Julia Picetti speaks with such knowledge and wisdom here - due to her experience of addiction with which her (late) daughter (R.I.P) was so seriously afflicted - the end result that sadly & inexorably - led to her terrible premature death.
Addiction is an ILLNESS - it is NOT a MORAL issue. This mantra should be repeated over and over in the minds of so many ppl so a true understanding of the illness of addiction - is finally recognised - & thus tackled & treated with a positive mental attitude. Too many lives are ruined because of a dangerous tendency towards denial and - more often than not - for the addict to feel they are being punished for - finding themselves with an addiction they've lost control over - and by NO FAULT of their own. They didn't want to be addicted - yet this is where they have invariably ended up. Thanks to Julia Picetti for her superb talk about addiction and heartbreaking story. Rx

Well my drug of choice was prescribed by a doctor that told me it was a non habit forming medication and it was safe to use long term. These physicians have made becoming an addict so incredibly easy, but they arent so willing to help in the recovery. My appointments and meds were rather cheap, but when i wanted off the meds i went thru horrible withdrawal. I had to report this to my insurance which ultimately dropped me. Getting help is so outrageously expensive i cannot afford what is asked for in a lump sum. When i said i can make payments they sent me to a methadone clinic. I would give one of my limbs for a treatment that worked. Methadone is not the answer. As for u and ur situation i am so sorry for ur loss and ur right something needs to change!

Methadone works, its the gold standard of treatment. I find it funny that even “addicts” cast stigma on a medication that can and will help save other addicts. Just look at the actual statistics of people in methadone treatment vs detox/rehab only. It is around 9x more effective in stopping all destructive behavior, lower relapse, lower crime, lower Hep C, HIV, the list goes on.
MMT was the answer for me, it helped me get clean and ive been methadone free for years. So for you to try and discourage an addict from any treatment that might save them is wrong and irresponsible. When in fact the treatment you suggest is what is not working.
MAT and therapy is the gold standard...period. All statistics show this.

    • @rickjames9477
      @rickjames9477 4 года назад +9

Michael MMT may work for you, but everyone is different - many people put on insane weight and it totally ruins their natural hormone production and also stunts digestion. I’ve never had an opioid feel like poison in my body, methadone however to me feels like poison.
      Different strokes for different folks!

Yes, I understand you 100%, I can relate. I have now somehow survived 7 years of this hellish torment. Life was wonderful before this. I had 8 years in the military. Best years of my life. I now feel so lost somedays. It gets so dark I can't even see the light. I try so hard. I know so many people who have tried so hard... So many have come so close to triumph and success, just to slip up and overdose. I just don't know what to do somedays.... I got so much to live for.... All I can do is to keep trying... Get the help I need and then fight..... It truly is the darkest before the dawn... Deep inside I know recovery is possibly. I must pursue it as I used to pursue drugs. WHATEVER IT TAKES AND AS SAID HOWEVER LONG IT TAKES....

It may be different for everyone as every BODY and BRAIN is different. I was lucky that my dad saw me get clean before he passed last year. But now from heaven he sees me clearly as "I am now". Clean but changed, damaged, sad, suffering every min of everyday! About 3 months ago, he started to guide me to a possible answer. He told me to my core that I needed to re build, re wire, re generate my body, brain, and cells with every healthy habit I could find, and believe it to be so true that it is working to the point that even if it wasn't, I would trick my brain and body and soul to make it true! Its not free unfortunately. Life will never be as before when i could do little maintenance and be so happy. But I am willing to pay the price for that happiness again. Eat clean, completely clean! Almost Vegan. Have a routine and don't compromise it. Its a way of life now..... sleep fully and wake early and have a routine. Work out, its not an option. And above all......re wire your brain and body back to the positive reversing the damage that opioids did! READ PSYCHO CYBERNETICS, WATCH MEL ROBBINS, PRACTICE SLEEPING WITH SOME OF THESE AUDIO BOOKS SPEECHES EVERY NOW AND THEN AS SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING. I Started to feel stable happiness once again, about a month ago. I am happy! My brain and body and soul are rebuilt stronger and better than before! Its possible! - May God Bless you. My dad always quoted " Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it and our attitude and choices.

Here's what people don't seem to understand..
The brain scan of a person with an addictive personality is different than a person who is not.. this shows how there could very well be a predisposition to addiction. There have been numerous studies which prove it is all in the wiring of the brain, not something the addict "can help" like people want to accuse them of..
A perfect example are the studies which prove that twins who were adopted separately and raised by different families in totally different environments could still both become addicts because they're genetically predisposed

Kudos! All respect to this remarkable woman who after merely 22 months after what must have been an earthshattering, for most of us unfathomable loss was able to use this loss not only to come here, pull herself together and perform this talk before thousands of people about it...but - actually decided that something needed to be done about this problem; AND did it!
I've been off opiates/opioids now for 7-8 months...(without any 'substite-drug', ie. methadone/subutex) for the first time in over 20 years!
Unfortunately I cannot say that I've even begun to heal, in any way, shape or form (I even suffer from some physical abstinence-symptoms, still). But - I am firmly grounded in the knowledge/realization that the life as an addict isn't even worth living! And, I at least have the hope of getting better with time (even though that hope wildly varies in intensity...to be honest)

California has just passed senate bill 855 2020 which is effective 1/1/2021. This mandates ALL insurance carriers must provide coverage for substance abuse disorders the same as any other disease such as cancer. This also applies to disability insurers. The insurance commissioner has required all insurers to provide a copy of their policies by 12/31/2020. The bill is very specific that carriers cannot restrict coverage which is deemed medically necessary. California is now the leading state in healthcare for SUD. If the carrier is a HMO or has network providers only they must still provide coverage, even if they provide care outside their network. Anyone in California can read the bill online. If any carrier tries to deny or restrict coverage they are breaking the law and subject to huge penalties.

The reason why its hard to defeat addiction is because only an addict can talk to an addict. Why do you think AA and NA is basically ran by addicts that have been clean for while. Because they know how it is to be an addict.
If an addict vents to a non addict about addiction, the non addict will have no clue how they feel. Therefore, they will not have the correct answer, Or any answer at all. Even if they really genuinely wanted to help.
And the problem with addicts speaking to addicts is that everybody has their own way they think they can beat the addiction. Thats the problem in a nutshell. Any solution will be theory, but You have to master self and discipline while and after detox to survive. And get a new set of friends.

sal galvan Hi Sal. I'm not trying to be rude or to argue just for the sake of arguing, but what you wrote about methadone & Suboxone (being unhelpful "crutches" for addicts)is not only UNTRUE but it's also one of the most dangerous things to say.
What have you learned that is making you say opiate assisted therapy is not helpful for addicts?
Let's pretend you are right and that methadone and Suboxone are nothing but "crutches"...is it not acceptable to let sick people use crutches?
Are you aware of the failure rate of recovery
for opiate addicts who do not use methadone/buprenorphine as crutches? That number is in the high nineties...I believe it is 97%. Remember, that means 97% of opiate addicts FAIL to get better.
Your statements about methadone and Suboxone are dangerous because you are feeding into the stigma surrounding using these life saving medications in order to help recover from opiates. It's cruel to try to make people who are desperate to save their own lives feel guilty about using the best tools available to them. Many opiate addicts are ashamed as it is and we need to facilitate recovery instead of making it even harder. 97%...it doesn't get much harder than that.

  • @hesedken

I have 43 years clean. I have noticed that those who make it a couple of years seem to have learned how to handle the compulsion and temptations by that time. Many go on much further but they still have to realize chemical dependency is 24/7/lifetime. Overconfidence can lead to a relapse, which sends the addict back to the ground zero stage.
Even though the monkey on the back is theoretically there, it may not even be noticeable after a little while of sobriety. So, all addicts can have hope of a future of restoration and feeling good in recovery, but they must remember their vulnerability.

I've been suffering from anxiety and depression for 26 years, appr. For the last 8 years I've been addicted to valium and obiode medication just to make life somewhat bearable. 3 weeks ago today I came within minutes of overdosing. I was only saved because my dog Sammy started to cry and howl which alerted my mother who was able to bring me around by pouring basin after basin of water on my face. When I started to come around I was surrounded by ambulance men and could just barely make out my parents standing in the corner of my room. The look on both their faces is etched in my brain. I now know what affect my death would have on my family that most people who od will never know. I have tapered down to 20% of what I was taking and hope to be clean in the next few months. But I really don't know if the tremendous amount of guilt I feel is going to last and I cannot say for definite that I will be better. Just absolutely don't relapse and remember if you do relapse your tolerance is right down so don't take massive amount or you could die. It's a pity more people don't know about clonidine. I can semi-relate...Sounds as though you have a dependence a bit more than an “addiction” though - Meaning - you must have your doses every day to function, but you don’t get an increase tolerance or you are getting more and more and more weather legitimately or not, just to get the same relief. I’m glad that your Doctors respect you’re responsible use and have not cut you off as is the case with so many other chronic pain sufferers. It is indeed interesting why long term use can work for some people and not others. Best wishes!

@@bestiefswlady5251 Thanks 😊. Yes I am very fortunate that I've not been cut off as it's life saving for me, I could never handle going back to being covered in psoriasis again, my IBS coming back or handle the withdrawal after this many years on it... I originally use to get "extra" ontop of my prescription, but I've not done that in nearly 2 years now.. how I keep my tolerance in check is on weekends or times when I don't need to be fully functional, I will cut the corner off my pills so I end up taking say 20mg less for a day or two and then go back to my prescription dose and therefore it remains effective and my tolerance doesn't climb any further than what it is now Which is 160mg of Oxycodone per day. I don't go chasing the high as I don't and never really have gotten a high off opiates.. maybe a slight antidepressant effect / mood lift but no euphoria compared to other drugs like amphetamines etc

The system needs a reform focusing on treatment of addiction, instead of worrying so much about whats happening in prescribing offices. The government is targeting the problem in wrong places.
