Fixing Minecraft's RPG Progression System

  • Minecraft, the world's biggest game with over 300 million copies sold, offers limitless creative potential and holds a special place for many due to the fond memories created with friends and the satisfaction of completing builds or farms. However, despite its vast appeal and the countless hours spent in-game, there seems to be a persistent feeling that something is missing. The author suggests that this void could be filled by a comprehensive RPG adventure system, addressing the game's inconsistent difficulty levels during the early and mid-game phases and providing more motivation for players to engage beyond the endgame, especially those uninterested in mega builds or large-scale farming.
    The early game, characterized by exploration and resource gathering, lacks significant challenges, making the rewards feel somewhat unearned due to the ease of obtaining high-tier gear and overcoming mobs. To combat this, the author proposes locking gear progression behind dimensional progression and adjusting regional difficulties to make the game more engaging and challenging, encouraging players to explore and strategize more carefully. For the endgame, suggestions include expanding the recent updates that aimed to enrich this phase with more content like trial chambers, adding a repeatable dungeon feature, and cosmetic enhancements to sustain player interest and provide new goals. These changes aim to address the common trope of servers dying after the dragon is defeated by offering continuous progression and challenges, thereby enhancing the overall Minecraft experience.

    For me, killing the Ender Dragon often feels like it's the beginning of the game instead of the end. I think it would be interesting if they made a change similar to what Terraria does. When you kill the "final" boss, your world evolves in different ways. Mobs are more difficult and new items can be found and/or crafted. This, in comparison to Minecraft, gives a sense of purpose throughout the whole game, whereas in Minecraft, the motivation can fall off if you don't make goals for yourself ahead of time. Really interesting video! Good job :)

    I'm working on a datapack + resource pack to try and fix this exact issue. It doesn't quite follow your guideline, but we came to a similar conclusion. The knowledge of recipes is a powerful way to control player progress, and we work to lock those recipes behind existing minecraft content to entice players to interact with all the game has to offer. Instead of making a beeline for the end

    Oooo.. those are really good points. I also want to add my idea here. For an open world game where you have to progress your way to be stronger than before, it's very weak in that aspect. Sure you get stronger and stronger each time you explore the world, but it's just too simple. It's just wood→stone→iron→diamond→netherite. That's it. It's way too simple and can get boring really quick. I feel like what it needs is more options for you to choose, similar to Terraria where there are tons of armor and weapons that you can choose which makes the game not boring.
    By giving more armor and weapons, that'd open more possibility of stuff that each player can do and more possibility means it'd hook players with the game longer. It doesn't even have to be hundreds of armor and weapons like in Terraria. 10 or 20 of both armor and weapons should be enough. And each of them doesn't even have to be above one another. Some could be in the same tier.
    Another one is to make some unique armors and weapons. Give them unique stats that you can't even get from enchants. Like for example a cactus sword (ik, very original of me) would deal the same amount of damage as a stone sword and can swing faster than it but its durability is the same as a wooden sword, or a wither sword made of bones of wither skeleton where it could give wither effect to whoever got hit by it, etc etc. Things like this are the reason why people love Terraria's combat even though it's mostly just spam. There are so many weapons that you can get and each of them are unique on their own. Not only that, players also have to go out there and really explore the world to get those weapons. Give us a reason why we should explore the world. Give us special weapons made from different types of ingredients from different biomes and special loots that can only be found in specific structures.
    Speaking of loot, loot in this game is pretty bad. Sure you can find a golden apple in a dessert temple, or a golden apple in a jungle temple, or a golden apple in mineshaft, or a golden apple in bastion, did I mention a golden apple in a woodland mansion?
    Joke aside, I think you can see the problem. Most loots can be found in multiple different places. There's very little exotic loot in the game. Even if some places have exotic/exclusive loot, it's not much. For example, in the ancient city you can get stuff that you can't find anywhere else such as the blue disc, sneak enchant book, and blue compass. Now, I don't want to sound like an ungrateful bast4rd, but that is very little exclusive loot for the biggest structure in the overworld with very tight security that they've been hyped up for years. They even delayed it and yet we only got 3 new loots from that place. One of them is useless in hardcore, one of them is useless if you're not interested in lore, so that only makes it one loot that is useful for everyone.
    For the next update, I genuinely don't mind if they only fix the loot in the game. Just add a bunch of new loots where each of them are exclusive to some structure. It's absolutely fine to add goofy or lore related loot, but make sure it doesn't get in the way of the actual loot that'd help your playthrough.
    I really want to talk more, such as them adding big biomes with very little native flora and fauna that'd make the game feel more alive (looking at you scraped firefly and birch biome) and mob vote, but this comment is getting way too long and that's unrelated to the topic. I just wish that they'd learn from their mistake and start fixing the game, slowly from the core gameplay to the atmosphere.
    Oh, one last thing. Dodge button. It's a small thing but would be a huge game changer

    • @alaincraftjava

      Some solid points and honestly, I’m like really surprised by the choice to add a new weapon to the trial chambers. Have you seen the new snapshot with the mace? I really didn’t think we’d get a new weapon unless they did a combat update. I think the trial chambers and the new mace are an amazing step in the right direction. Like if they updated all the old structures with the trial spawners like I said in the video and made new unique weapons for each one, it’d be awesome!! And honestly, I’ve always kinda disliked the thing where people just say “you can get mods for that” because modding it is complicated and you end up needing to wait for the modder to update the mod every time. But I am tempted to try the terarria mod that I’ve been hearing about that adds everything from terarria to minecraft

    • @gdottothegamer1001
      @gdottothegamer1001 3 месяца назад +1

      @@alaincraftjava ehh no. When I was writing this I genuinely didn't know that they added a new weapon and a unique one at that. Glad they actually did it. Even though it's only one, it's a step forward in the right direction.
      The trial chamber is also another good addition to the game. Although, I feel like they could do a bit more with it. Like 2-4 more new monsters and more unique loots that players can only get in them. Hopefully they'd give it more content in the future.
      And yeah, I absolutely agree that they need to upgrade the old structures and give them unique loots, including weapons. And after seeing the mace gameplay, it gives me some ideas. A new better pyramid where we can find khopesh sword. The sword deals more damage than an iron sword but less than a diamond sword and it can pull and stun the opponent for one second, just like the real sword. Or a new better jungle temple where we can find a spear in it. It deals less damage than an iron sword but can hit 2 blocks further than a sword and its ability is thrust in which the wielder will instantly move 3 blocks forward and will hit anyone in its path. The ability can also be used mid air where the wielder would move diagonally. Alternatively, the spear can be just a normal craftable weapon. The recipe is similar to the shovel but it's diagonal. And since both weapons' abilities are much more powerful than the normal sword, they can just make the cooldown a few seconds longer. Also, when I said "a new better [structure]", I mean keep the old ones but make a bigger and better version of them. Kinda like how we have the mansion and outposts.
      And about mod, I 100% absolutely agree with that. Mod makes the game feels different than vanilla. It just doesn't give me the same vibes, y'know. I know there are so many good mods out there that can enchant my playthrough, but I still want more and better contents from the original vanilla game.

    There are so many rpg focused modpacks that add in a skill tree system and item qualities for weapons and armor - it makes looting more difficult bc you could find a really powerful diamond sword with mending and a attack bonus but it loses durability rapidly and has other debuff's like a lower luck % or crit chance and can make you move slower when holding it. Theres def a demand for a better way to approach Minecraft's progression while still making it feel like Minecraft without just adding on new things and not adding on things to old items and mechanics

  • @asherfeinstein6942
    @asherfeinstein6942 3 месяца назад +12

    I think this is a good time to bring up a big fault in Minecraft where a lot of the time the structures in Minecraft really don’t have a reason to go back and visit them. Once you get the items you need/want There really is no need to go back. I think recently they’ve been doing a better job if you want Notch apples or something but, generally a lot of the other items are either used for a one time purpose or are just not interesting. I think the ancient cities are a good example of this. There are some items there that kind of make it worth it to go back but, generally speaking there really is no use. Honestly, a lot of the features that Mojang adds have been really just adding one time items making it really uninteresting or motivating to explore. From what I’ve noticed, people tend to look at the new items added in updates go, “Oh wow cool!” And then not even really use the items or just not use them that much. Mojang needs to add new features that will actually be used multiple times that even can be a one time kind of item but, can be used multiple times (cough cough quivers cough cough).

    i dont think that making the game harder is the answer. there are still kids that play the game, and if the game starts to feel too challenging to them theyll feel discouraged. the majority of players arent as good at the game as the people you hear from. the majority of players are actually casual players and kids, what i think would make the game feel more rpg-like would be actually explaining things to the player and a very minor knowledge system. crafting a book to read to show you the recipes for potions, the use of the ender eye, how to get into the nether etc. because there are no real ingame explanations for these and it takes away the immersion when you need to look stuff up. i think a huge part of minecraft feeling less rpg-like is mostly on the lack of immersion. we need slightly better visuals (like water re-texture and colour) more ambient sounds, better explanations of redstone than the nonsense "redstone room" in the ANCIENT CITY. if you play the game without any prior knowledge, and no wiki, you wont know what redstone even does or what half the components are even used for.
    if you lock certain armour behind dimensions people will get incredibly frustrated, to me that sounds like a feature that could be used in "harder-hardcore" or something lol, that concept strays too far from minecrafts classic concepts. people who already had a difficult time getting ancient debris got even more frustrated with the need for the templates because it forced them to go to bastions that they struggled to fight in.
    i think when considering what changes should be made you should keep the "weaker" and younger players in mind as well. not to mention, if the game is starting to lose the rpg feel there are mods that remedy that in ways similar to what you brought up, and modding is an option for all players now. the game didnt have features i wish it had, and i know they wouldnt add the features im interested in because it would make the game too busy and complicated so i modded my game. anyone can do that! i do think this video is a great concept, and maybe your next one could be about great rpg mods you found for the game to combat the issues you brought up here incase other people like the ideas you shared and want to see them in their game.

      I guess I wasn’t really thinking of the younger players or the people who aren’t as good and struggle to beat the game with the current difficulty. It would kinda suck to make the game even harder for them. I was more thinking about my friends and I playing and how we still die a lot in the beginning cuz we aren’t super good, but once we’re fully geared, the whole game gets super easy except for the warden. The early game difficulty ideas are based on some other rpg survival games I’ve played and might actually make for a better mod concept than a full update to minecraft.

    I think combat feels so easy in minecraft right now because of how the hostile mobs in the game scale to the player. A shield and decent food can go a long way in a playthrough. The shield is pretty OP and the hunger system could use a rework but that's just a piece of the problem. I think a bigger problem is the lack of overall enemy power and variety. There's many issues with the way the player progresses in a world but I'd like to see more of a focus on enemy variety instead of buffs to existing ones. There are no mobs that charge towards the player, no jumping evasive ones (yet), no enemy that can grab the player or immobilize them. Mobs like the ghast, the breeze, the warden are more interesting to fight and id like to continue that sentiment to existing mobs and new ones in the future. I still want the main 4 (zombie, spider, creeper, skeleton) to keep their simplicity but just tweaking it a little bit. Zombies could be slow but overwhelming and could spawn mostly in hordes (wandering or spontaneous). Spiders should turn to be parallel with the surface that they're climbing but should be pretty fast. Skeletons could switch to a sword if the player is within a certain distance acting more like a wither skeleton. Creepers could try to sneak up on you and maybe sometimes only explode if they're in the player's line of sight. Some tweaks like this would be cool I think. Also combat changes for the player.

    This is why I love mods, you can almost do everything you said with mods, there are 2 mods that I know of where you can lock gear behind a level system (Just Leveling and ProjectMMO) then there is recipe stages where you can lock recipes behind till you got an advancement or completed a quest added by FTBQuest. The Higher DIfficultys are solved with Majrusz's Progressive Difficulty mod, then you could also add Progressive Bosses, so each time you fight a boss it gets stronger. Which mod I also really like is End Remastered as it forces you to explore and search for the ender eyes as it has 12 different ones that spawn or can be crafted differently. Then you can throw in some world gen mods (Terralith and Tectonic are my favorites) and add some mods that add more Structures for you to explore. You can also add way more mods to make the game more interesting/Harder or just straight up better. For the Combat there is better combat or epic fight (epic fight is my favorite)

    People already ignore the enchanting table for villagers. That won’t make end game enchantments harder it will just further nerf the table. And dear god, I do not want to be punished for wanting dark oak wood or wanting to live in a roofed forests just because sometimes super ultra mega rarely there are mansions.
    Also armour is dimension locked. Why should netherite be moved from bastions to end cities when bastions are harder. And you just said you can skip the piglin brutes. You cannot because that’s how you get the end game armour. Moving an entire material from one dimension to another will fuck up the lore so badly too.
    And finally Minecraft isn’t an RPG - it’s a sandbox. It could truly be improved with more adventure elements but that doesn’t make it not a sandbox. If you’re a player who gets bored after the dragon because they don’t wanna build a big base and such then go play Terraria. Really. It’s an 11/10 game. It seems like Minecraft isn’t your game.

    • @alaincraftjava
      @alaincraftjava  3 месяца назад +1

      You seem a little upset which is fine, we can have different opinions on this, but let me address your points. With the 1.20.2 enchanting villager updates it’s gotten harder to just ignore enchanting tables, and bring villagers all over the place to be librarians from different biomes is more time consuming and harder. You can still do it, but they also won’t give you max enchanted books anymore so you’ll need to spend a lot more experience for them. And you really won’t be punished for wanting to live in a dark oak forest especially if you wanted to play in that world for more than the 63 days it takes to turn the whole world to max regional difficulty. I wouldn’t drastically increase difficulty in those biomes, I would just set it to the max regional difficulty of your game difficulty in some of the better loot biomes. And when you reach end game and have max gear, is a slightly stronger zombie or skeleton really that tough?
      And I wouldn’t move netherite, just the trims to upgrade them. I assume the lore you’re talking about is the “ancient builder civilization” and I guess if we’re following the pattern of how they’ve been adding structures and everything connected to them is in the structure, it wouldn’t make sense to move netherite templates to the end without updating the end, so I should have also called for an end update in the video, but I didn’t want to list every single update that Minecraft needs rn. For skipping brutes, I meant it as being able to skip them completely in order to beat the game, but to keep them relevant with my idea, they could move diamond armor templates to just the bastions and not the fortresses.
      And I don’t think it’s fair to categorize minecraft as only one game type and just label it “sandbox” especially when most of the additions to minecraft are focused on exploration and adventure. I think minecraft could be considered a sandbox, rpg, survival, and maybe even open world game instead of just sandbox. I’d say sandbox still reigns supreme as the main thing people do in the game because once you beat the dragon, that’s all that’s left. I wasn’t addressing the sandbox part as I believe that is the best developed part of the game.
      And Minecraft is my game, I enjoy redstone and and big farms and builds and getting to put my creativity to the test with bigger and bigger bases and I enjoy flying around to explore and find new things and hang out with my friends on my private server. I think many aspects of the game are amazing and this video was about what’s missing for me and that’s the RPG adventure system. I play minecraft consistently because I love it, but when I feel like doing some RPG adventuring, I have to pick up a different game for a bit and it’d be cool to get some more of that from Minecraft also.

    I love this idea! It feels like a good sense of progression without ruining the sense of the vanilla game. If I ever get better at coding I would love to implement this as a mod! I've always been a fan of slower game progression and this is a great example. I think more overworld and nether mobs in general would make things far more interesting. Not just variants of existing ones, but something a bit more alex's mobs style to increase the variation between biomes. I loved your idea of regional difficulty and gear progression from overworld to end. That would mean players would have to either be able to break obsidian with iron picks in some way or would need a reliable way of making end portals early on. I actually think that could be way more interesting. Starting out, before they get diamond gear, players would have to use the existing nether portals, but after getting diamond, they could make whatever portal they wanted wherever they wanted. That would provide a sense of progression in both gear and base customization.
    Additionally, doing this system probably means making villager trades a bit less op, as right now getting all that sort of stuff is grindy, but easy with villagers. I think it would be good to have trades capped at certain levels and expand them by giving the villagers different items like templates, trims or enchanted books. You would have to sacrifice some of your valuables, but afterwards theres a chance of the trade appearing later during some kind of trade refresh.
    I would love to see additional weapons in game, as I think they did a great job giving the axe, trident, bow, sword and crossbow some unique flair each. They all have advantages and disadvantages. I'd love to see a knife or dagger, maybe a spear, a slingshot and something like a mace. I feel like that would provide good weapon variety. Offhand tools for combat could also be super nice, as I get tired of carrying a shield just so I can deal with skeletons. Currently, making horse armor and saddles craftable in this system would allow for players to actually use horses reliably early game, then things like diamond and netherite horse armor are unlocked with player armor. This way horses are an actually useful way of early game transportation.
    Possibly the best way, in my opinion, for mojang to increase the sense of progression is through personalization. They already did this with trims to some degree, encouraging exploration, and in the above concept adding a nether portal to your base could be a flex about your adventures in the nether. Combined with something like End Remastered, where players have to gather special eyes from different locations around the world, progression could have a much more adventurous feel.

I do love the idea of adding in a Mace to the game, but I was hoping it was gonna be a material tier based Mace, like from Wood to Netherite: It would start out as a Wooden Club, then a Stone Club, and then Iron, Gold, and so on. The Iron up to Netherite Maces could be expensive, requiring a Full Block of the Ore needed.

    I think making diamond armor nether progression based is wrong. But I do like the idea of slowing down the pace we obtain things. It might be to big of a change but I think making reaching the nether necessary for enchanting your tools could address two problems. Obviously it slows the pace down, but it also entices players to explore dungeons for enchanted gear that could make add to the existing early game exploration loop, but make it drastically more important once you've already made a starter base

    Big oversight in this video: Villager trading is easier than using the enchantment table. Locking the enchanting table behind the end would not stop anyone from getting S tier armor. I can get a villager trading system and iron farm set up within 20min to an hour of starting a world. It's not hard.
    The Warden is not a boss. The devs have started multiple times that it is not meant to be fought.
    Whenever I watch a video that mentions Minecraft's progression, I always think of the survival game Valheim. I really wish there was a Valheim mod for Minecraft because then it would mix the best aspects of both games. Valheim has great gear and food progression, and this is complimented by the biome progression- the biomes scale in difficulty and each one has a boss. How Valheim does its progression would address Minecraft's food and gear progression if implemented into the game. Valheim's progression gives a reason to farm different food and gear progression takes time. In Minecraft, there's no reason to even craft leather armor. The only wooden tool I make is a pick to get stone and then I get iron. In Valheim, I spent over two weeks at least just with early game tools and gear. Minecraft should be the same.
    Using armor templates is one idea, but another option could be locking gear behind bosses. This is something else Valheim does. Minecraft players always say they want more bosses. There could be overworld bosses for unlocking copper and iron armor, a boss in the Nether for gold and diamond armor, and then netherite. Diamond armor could be unlocked by killing the wither while netherite is unlocked by killing the ender dragon. Personally, I don't like locking netherite behind the end.
    I know copper armor and tools aren't in the game, but if the progression system was fixed, then there would be a reason to add it. Also, copper was the first metal used for armor and tools by people.

      Not trying to be rude, but I’d put money against you being able to set up a villager trading system capable of making one max enchant armor piece within an hour with the newest villager trading system and no enchanting table. If you found like the perfect seed, it could be possible but in a random world, there’s no way.
      And sure the warden isn’t technically a boss, but it has the highest health and damage of any mob in the game, an effect he puts on you based on proximity, and can only spawn based on certain conditions. Sounds to me like a boss even if Mojang says it’s not, so I generally consider it as a boss. If the elder guardian is a boss, I don’t see why this can’t be called a boss casually just out of respect for the amount of work it takes to try to kill it.
      And I wasn’t clear on this in the video, but the goal was to make minimal changes without calling for a ton of new assets like mobs or biomes or bosses or weapon and armor types. I wanted an idea that was made by more or less shuffling or adjusting the things already in the game to make it better. So my ideas are loosely based on valheim as that is one of my favorite games without 100% copying them and just making tweaks to what exists already. I also knew that if I made a comment about adding new things to the game like copper armor, all my comments would be “get X mod, if you want copper armor so bad” so it really was just ideas on how to make adjustments to existing things without getting too far into mod territory.
      Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching the vid!

      Maybe if they make the new change, it might take closer to two hrs. I've literally never used the enchantment table to enchant my gear though. Locking the recipe would mean nothing. Villager trading is still easier even after the next update. If Mojang wants players to use enchanting tables they should add exclusive enchants. Currently in my vanilla survival world, I have full enchanted netherite armor but no enchanting table.
      Personally I think Minecraft needs an overhaul to add something for non-builders. Right now, if you aren't a builder or redstoner the game gets dull quickly.

    I like your ideas. However In thinking about these very issues I came to a different conclusion and that is to treat each of the dimensions as scales of difficulty and technology.
    The dimensions would be in order of; the Overworld, the Aquatic world, the Nether and the End, and to to get to one would require portals &/or resources collected from the previous one.
    So to getting to the End would require finding the End portal in the Nether as an example, and the difficult of getting to the next dimension would get increasing more difficult as you go trough the game. Getting from the Overworld to Aquatic is as simple as finding an ocean, but getting the materials to get to the other dimensions might require getting drops off many mobs, finding rare items in chests or or killing a boss.
    Of course for this to work properly it would require a new dimension between the Aquatic and the Nether, linking the two. Something like a dimension of hot spring swamps full of luminescent giant mushroom forests where creepers & slimes come from and their variants. Harder than Aquatic but easier than the Nether.
    Each dimension in order would unlock new technologies, such as Potions in one, Redstone in another, Enchanting in another etc, as well as new blocks and of course a boss for each dimension. This is also where the idea of crafting unlocks (iron gear, diamond gear etc as you said) could be tied to dimension level. Ideally there would also be a Beacon/ conduit device that you can build from local materials to assist you living in that dimension, each one able to be combined with the previous one for even greater effects.
    With a total of 5 dimensions each one harder than the previous one, getting to defeat the Ender Dragon would then require real feeling of progression through the game and real rewards. This would also allow you to be able to play at the difficulty level, aesthetics and technologies to suit your play style. Want to build a functioning base and villager town in the nether, doing it this way would be possible.

    Not on the topic, but why are some RUclipsrs adding subtitles onto the video itself, where there is a special feature for it in RUclips. So it would be easier to make a Shorts out of the full video?

    • @alaincraftjava
      @alaincraftjava  3 месяца назад

      I did it because youtube messes up the automatic subtitles and even if I manually put the subtitles in using youtube’s system, I don’t get to style those. So I wanted to style them basically. I also used clips from Mojang’s video that had subtitles on it and wanted to obscure them so that they don’t confuse people. And that’s what made the most sense to me to cover it up with. And with the cinematic and kinda minimal style of the video with no on screen graphics over the footage, I figured it looked too simple so I think this works.

    For me the combat is just a chore, it’s like the unfunniest and most boring combat ever made.
    And given that you lose your items on death, you don’t really want to engage in fights you’re not sure you can’t instantly win because of the massive punishment it causes.
    You can’t even like run back where you died and start fighting again because the inventory would all be fucked up.
    To me a gravestone or something that just restores your inventory with the same exact organization you had prior your death would be a good idea to solve this problem…
    And also a damn fucking update that makes the combat actually interesting or satisfying with at least some hitboxes

    WARDEN IS NOT A BOSS
    You aren't supposed to fight with it. Warden is a mob you should AVOID using snowballs and wool.

    • @alaincraftjava
      @alaincraftjava  3 месяца назад +4

      It’s more of a boss than any boss in the game rn, so that’s why I called it a boss. I understand that technically it isn’t a boss because Mojang said so, but if Mojang added a new building that spawns with loot in it and a ton of TNT traps all around that almost guarantee you die and says “the traps are too hard and the loot isn’t worth it, it’s not a structure, don’t go in there.” I’d still call it a structure, and I’d def still go in there.
      It doesn’t matter if Mojang said not to fight it and that you should avoid it, I’m still fighting it. It’s my game, I ain’t running from some little blue guy hiding in the dark.

      The whole point of the warden is to make Minecraft scary again - just like our first night. Exploring ancient city would be boring if warden was just another enemy to defeat.
      But, I can definitely agree that we need more bosses in Minecraft.

  • @lightness7670
    @lightness7670 3 месяца назад +2

    You are streamlining the game too much, you need multiple ways of progression and levels of player engagement to have an effective game. The player is faced with no real challenge in the overworld with a full iron armor and weapons, they will face this challenge in the neither forcing them to upgrade or enchant, then they will march on to the end and finish the game.
    The problem is the empty void between stone to iron (instant) and from Nether to End.
    Ideally they would add a mid game between iron and stone (iron much more in deep slate and less in overworld) and make the warden and it's city the first real wall the player faces before the neither, from there the player will need fire resist potions or enchantments making them engage more with systems due to environmental hazards, and ultimately upgrading to netherite gear in the neither facing a boss not random drops.
    The end in no way shape or form should host direct upgrades as it does not host the grounds to do exploration the core part of upgrading and progression., in fact it should host items like Elytra because they are not direct linear upgrades but something that cannot be found anywhere else, something unique gameplay wise.
    For post content you can have very rare bosses in each dimension that drop these unique items (trident as an example) to enforce re exploring the world with your now OP gear.
    But non of this should be gated as a player gets more familiar with the game they should be able to progress faster or skip progression beats, (beat the game with iron armor etc)

    If you want Minecraft to be a little more challenging then I recommend playing Bedrock.
    Regeneration in Bedrock is slow, incredibly slow.
    Even with proc4 armour, you can't swim in lava and slow regen makes mobs more deadly.
    The only drawback is that the slow regen even effects the Ender Dragon so you don't even need to destroy the End crystal, with enough bed bombs you can kill it faster than it can heal.
    But Bedrock makes up for it by making the Bosses lot more powerful, Elder Guardians can give mining fatigue from a longer distance and they don't have a cool down, the MOMENT the mining fatigue wears off they give you a new one.
    And everyone knows about Bedrock Wither.

    i think the issue is that minecraft isn't a survival game, I found it much more fun and fitting when the gameplay loop was more of a mix between survival and creative, with health but no food and other things like that. over the past about decade or so it feels like they've been trying to turn this into a game it isn't and will never be, somehow as well as doing things like being so afraid to MAKE any changes to the game and adding nothing but crap that you most likely will never even see in your playthrough.
