I never thought this would be among my top 3 most watched videos, but it's such a great bass line by Chris, using his Gibson Thunderbird. The model used by Chris Squire is different from mine, as it is has the non-reverse body shape.

What is your favourite Chris Squire bass line - NOT using the Rickenbacker?
Let us know in the comments!
Miguel, how do you manage to find out which bass Chris used on which song? On Tormato, it is clearly indicated in the sleeve notes, but on the other albums?
@@michelforest6329 depends - most of them - the hard to guess ones - I have read somewhere on interviews etc, and even information read on forums from who was at certain shows. When there is no hint at all I try to guess by listening to the tone or look for specifics of a certain bass (number of strings, ambitus, effects)
@@miguelbass Thanks for your reply. Chris had such an interesting collection of basses. My favorite, apart from the Rick, was the 8-string. What he did with it was so interesting. I love how you manage to get a sound that is so close to the actual recording. Chris was my rock music hero and when he died, Yes died with him I think. Obrigado for the videos!
@@michelforest6329 you are welcome! If you like the 8-string I have a few videos that you will enjoy - especially dedicated to the Ranney bass. My new bass! (Ranney 8 string bass)

@@miguelbass I just checked out your video. I can't believe you got a Ranney like Chris had! I'm very impressed. It's a beautiful instrument too, congratulations.
Not only is DRAMA one of my favorite YES albums, it's one of my all time favorite albums. Amazing F*cking album.
Absolutely agree! Thanks, Tommy!
Same here Tommy!
The album had such a difficult task, following up the Wakeman-Anderson version of Yes. But Drama is great.
Damn, that Thunderbird sounds incredible with a pick.
Thank you Freddie!
I love Drama. Trevor and Geoff gave Yes a new flavour or direction for the new sounds of the decade. Thanks!
I just came onto RUclips to have a look at how you played the bass parts to "Into The Lens"- only to find to my shock you haven't done that song! Any plans to cover it??
@@xeractus it really deserves! I have been busy with #playforChris6 but now that I am done with it, I'll gather some suggestions for the next one!
Awesome! Love this song. Love the Album. Saw them in Concert in New York @ Madison Square Garden. Amazing show. I still remember Chris' bass rattling the plumbing in the mens room lol
yes, they were amazing piece of their contribuition
What I love about your renditions of Chris Squire’s bass playing is (1) it’s spot-on, (2) it helps us appreciate what a unique bass player c.s. was, and (3) it helps us appreciate what an accomplished player YOU are ... you make this look easy and yet it’s so obvious that it is not. Excellent work.
Thank you very much George. I'm happy to know you're enjoying the videos. All the best.
Chris Squire is proud of you in heaven.... GREAT
Thank you so much Gianfranco.
One of the best bass songs ever recorded, and you did a fantastic job. Bravo.
Thank you very much!
splendid job.i. playin this within 10 min of wakeing ip this morning and you had me playin air bass 2 a sweat.. great way to groove out
Great to know that my videos are a positive inspiration. Happy playing!
@@miguelbass yeah good. keep it goin.im a rocker mostly metal &hard rock.love bass and a good bassist
Nothing against Billy Sherwood but YOU should be in YES!

amazing 1 of the only vids i can watch 3 times in a row snd still be amazed
Thanks :))) have a nice weekend 🎶
A lot! On that evening I recorded well over 10 takes to get the different angles... I stopped around the time my hands were tired - the T-Bird is not the most ergonomic bass. Only a few of them made it to the final with the different angles. Not to mention the countless times I practiced it in the preceding couple of months :) Grad you like it!! Thanks :)
Can’t stop playing this.
Thank you for watching Lenny.
This is a challenging song to play and you NAILED it. This is amazing! How could Squire write basslines like that and sing at the same time? Immense talent.
And many times with bass pedals :) That's Chris! Thanks!
Fabuloso! Gran trabajo Miguel! Chris Squire era un genio.
Obrigado, Mario! Um grande abraço
The Squire Stomp…authentically delivered. That rocked!
Thank you so much, Andrew!
This is so much fun to watch. I find it so cool to see someone really getting the nuances and energy that were originally put into the song. Thanks again.
Thank you very much!
Miguel, this is absolutely fantastic! This is one of my favorite Chris Squire pieces and you have just nailed it. Your playing and feel for the piece are superb. Thank you so much for you video- I’ve probably watched it 10 times already.
Thank you very much, Chris. I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos!
The king has gone. Squire for ever
It's too much Miguel. I love that song so much, my head about explodes every time I hear the last minute of it. Great job, Chris would be proud!🤩
Thanks Jerry! I too love that final solo!
Best bass riff ever. Great job.
Thanks Tommy!
@@miguelbass i don’t think most listeners appreciate that syncopated initial riff that’s going on. As a guitarist, i found my job was easy compared to my poor bass player and drummer on that section. We used it a cple times between songs. Thx again.
OH-MY-GOSH! Incredible! For the first time in 30 years I finally get the bass line of this tune. No way to say thank you Miguel
When my brother introduced me this song it was on 1980 and it was shocking me!
"Does it really happen" was the initial theme song of an italian television broadcast called "Discoring".
I was watching that broadcast just for theat initial song!
Then we bought the LP and after several years I completed my collection of all YES albums on CD, cos' I don't have the turntable anymore.
Luckily I could see the reunion concert in Rome with my best friend and enjoy how those monsters plays live!
I'm not a bassist but as a self practicing bass I can say that you did a GREAT STUFF, man!
👏👏👏
Grazie Michele! I think the Italian edition of the record had a sticker with the name of that TV show!
@@miguelbass yes indeed 🙂
Sei un mito. Fantastica line di basso e fantastica performance con strepitoso assolo finale. Grazie
Grazie, Zaro!
Outstanding work my favorite song I'll have to pull my bass out and learn
Thanks Mark! Happy playing!
Miguel....I was a drummer in a band with a great bass player....we kept searching for ways to play this song with our band (but they chickened out)....because frankly as a bassist and drummer this song is among the very best. Bass guitar speaking, very very few bands feature their bass player like this. You tackled this song beautifully. I'm a drummer that wants to play bass! Kudos, my friend. You played it flawlessly, passionately. You played it in a way to make Chris proud!
Dear Greg, thank you for your kind words! I would also like to play drums more fluently.... I hope this also inspires you to try the bass... i think it benefits both roles!
Tu trabajo rescatando las líneas de uno de los mejores bajistas de rock (si no el mejor) de todos los tiempos es invaluable. Muchas gracias por esto!
Dani , muchissimas gracias! 🙏
DUDE...bass burns so hard on this tune...Squire was KING
+Jeff Porcaro Groove Master Thank you very much!
O entrosamento do Alan com o Chris no Drama é um absurdo.
Acho a melhor performance dos dois no Yes.
Great cover! You did Chris Squire justice. We must remember that The Fish 🐟🎸was also singing while playing this in concert. I saw the Drama tour "in the Round" in 1980 in San Diego. ✌😎💚
Thanks Justine! Those should be great memories from such a unique tour and album. All the best!
Sei un mito. Fantastica linea di basso e fantastica performance, complimenti, assolo finale strepitoso.
Grazie Zaro!🎶
I found myself recently trying to hum that song and I found myself predominantly humming what I knew of the Bass line so I had to check this out and I realize how cool Chris is everyday more and more. Thanks!!
Thank you, Dan! All the best!
Just found your channel. Chris Squire is my favorite bass player (and favorite rock star) ever. You’re an incredible player and honor Chris’s memory by posting fabulous videos like this one. Thank you! 👏👏👏
Thank you very much and welcome to the channel!!
Dude. I've been a Yes fan for 35 years, and you have done this tune justice! Nice.
+Fuzzy Knuckles Thank you very much!
+miguelbass do you play professionally Miguel??
Not really David, who knows one day! Thanks for your visit!
I'm watching this once again and thinking... OMG, how you memorized the ending solo? Just amazing. Perfect everything... sound, pick technique, feeling, everything sounds completely natural. By the way, it is insane how Squire could be so creative in a song that could be so simple without hard work. He was brutally genius, and you are always fantastic!!!
+Pedro Broggini Thanks Pedro. I had to go very slowly with the solo. Listening in small sections and trying to understand the "logical" fingerings until it appeared natural, as you say. Hopefully your opinion means I got it right ;) Abraço!
You didn't just flawlessly cover a famous Yes song, you channeled Chris Squire circa 1980!
There is likely no one alive that knows as much about Yes music and Chris Squires bass playing as Miguel - other than Chris Squire himself. Thanks for presenting a close up view of both your artistry and that of Chris Squire. You have some of the best videos on the net. Awesome performance!
Wow, terrific. Takes me back to the summer of 1980. Well done.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for doing this video. I'm a long-time drummer and guitar player who's now taking up bass guitar. This one always sounded like a pick but my ears aren't trained enough to know for sure. You did such a great job and your sound with a pick is identical to the recording, so now I know!
Thank you very much, Bob. Glad to know you're taking up bass! Happy playing.
This is fucking incredible….
Hi David, thanks for watching!
Hey Miguel! Every time I want my head to explode I come back to listen to your bass cover of this song. Just can't get enough of it!🤩
Thank you very much! Still one of my favourites from Chris
that's the same for me ... first time 7 years ago ... last time today. Thanks Miguel !
Superb playing, one of my favourite CS bass lines, the great man is sorely missed.
Thank you, Neil! All the best
Dr Miguel, you've done it once again. Superb dissection of Mr Squire's purpose, intent and execution. Loved it!
Thank you very much, Tom!
Que maestro sos Miguel entendes a Chris Squire como nadie!!!!!
Gracias amigo Marce. Saludos
I had the pleasure of working with Chris on the Rock Aid Armenia 'Smoke on the Water' single - it was a real pleasure watching and listening to this. Great stuff - you nailed it.
+jondeedotcom Thank you very much Jon for watching. It must have been terrific to work with Chris. He put his very own trademark sound on that project. All the best.
uma das melhores do mestre Chris Squire. Ritmada e melodiosa ao mesmo tempo. parabéns por teu tempo e dedicação! obrigado por mais este presente!
Muito obrigado. Um abraço.
Absolutely THE BEST bass cover on youtube. Spot on! Nice work!!
Thank you very much Jimmy!
Six years later, watching again and WOWED! I’m a bass player too and I know what it feels like to finally nail a difficult song on bass. This must’ve been extremely gratifying! Meticulously executed, Miguel!!
ohh wowww ! 😁
Thanks, Randle!
I have been playing this for 30 years doing an A pulloff on the G string and open A. Never even thought to try it like this. Cool.
Hi Chris! After watching Chris on other bass lines I kind of extrapolated that fingering. On the plus side you don’t have to skip from the A to the G strings. It would be nice to hear from someone who was at the Drama Tour! Thanks for watching 🎸
I just listened to the YES version and then listened to yours. I came here to see how it was played and enjoyed the way the bass is slightly more prominent in this video. I just love this song with all its sophisticated rhythms that break into short sections that just go dun, dun, dun, dun, …
I saw this song live on the original Drama tour.
Thank you! The Drama tour should be a great one to watch live!
I remember a few things about the Drama tour. It was theater in the round on a spinning stage. This gave the illusion that you were closer to the stage, but for me it meant Steve Howe (I play guitar) was spinning off to the other side when he started a solo I wanted to watch. Without Anderson and Wakeman, I thought the crowd was smaller than the previous 4 tours. I remember Trevor Horn struggling to sing the high notes in And You and I. It sounds like I'm being critical, but actually Drama weirdly enough is one of my favorite YES albums. I loved when the current YES played the entire album last year. You got me reminiscing and thinking about my TWO YES concerts coming up at the end of summer.
U never fail to amaze!! Saw this in philly pa 1980!!!
Miguel, I did indeed (from the 5th row) see Squire use a reverse Thunderbird for "Release Release" on the Tormato tour in Rochester, New York. It was their first or second stop of the North American tour. I also saw the Drama tour, but don't recall Squires choice of bass for this tune live.
Wow! Great job. You got the feel down, which is what I think is one of the hardest parts of playing this song. Awesome.
Thank you very much, Mike!
One of my favorite Yes tunes and my god that was beautiful. Great job!!!
Thanks again, all the best John!
OMG... Great Job!!!!! Masterfully Done!!!!
I've known this song since it came out, listened to it a zillion times, and as a bass player myself, I honestly can't tell your lines apart from the original!
+Michael Alexander Hi Michael. Thank you very much!
Great video of a great bass line from a great song from an underrated album.
Thank you so much! All the best
Once again! Miguel, fantastic job! So many players will love your performance! So proud of you for showing how the hands are the whole performance!! Absolutely terrific!! Thank you!! ....More please!
Thank you very much Arthur! Hope you're enjoying the rest of the videos
Complimenti !!! :-)
Grazie!!
you are a Great Musician, ciao from Italia and many thanks for the transcriptions of the Mighty Chris....
Muchas gracias!
Hey Miguel...it's Boboala..and I have traveled 8 years back in time to say 'you're kickin' butt on da bass!'! ;-) Every time I see your name/pic appear in my Rec List I feel compelled to watch your videos. And every time I enjoy the synergy of revisiting tunes from my youth (I was in high school when most of these gems were written...back in the '70s!) and watching a live play-along. And every time, so far 3 for 3, you have used a different and iconic bass! I am jealous but mainly digging the tone from each....like this Gibson. Sounds punchy yet full! Prob the best model they make. I had an EB III back as a kid with a short 30" scale. Eventually, I borrowed a friend's Precision Bass and dug the longer scale & sustain...though I'm not a bass player & I have petite hands/fingers and I'd love my old EB III back! Rock on, and I look forward to a new tune by you soon!
Stay tuned to my next project #playforChris6, out soon... and thank you so much for being here. By the way I got the Thunderbird as the closest option to the bass Chris played on this song - his Pelham Blue Gibson Thunderbird (non-reverse model). Keep in touch ... and don't worry about having small hands, if you like bass just go for it!
One single word: stratospheric !
Thank you, Michele!
Fantastic... it shows us how Chris was a Rocker ...
The best in bass! Merci Lionel!
Holy shit he is good
Thank you, Alex!
Un sacré "tour de force" ! Bravo, félicitations, congrats !
Merci, Paul!
My word. Awesome. I've been trying if for years but it just doesn't sound good unless played on a thunderbird. You nailed it man. Respect.
Thank you very much for watching and nice comments :)
The best music from Yes to me. Congratullations for your performance!!!
Thank you very much, Marcelo.
Me emocionei com essa linha de baixo tão fantástica! Muito obrigado!
Grande abraço, Denis. Obrigado!
FANTASTIC!!!!!

GOOD JOB BROTHER!!!
Hi Jessica, thank you!
WOW! BRAVO!!!! Fantastic playing. Perfecto-
Kevin R. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much, Tony.
Totally nailed the tune and the tone. I would have never thought a Gibson could sound like that.
Chris played originally a Thunderbird for this song - the non-reverse model in Pelham Blue. Thanks for watching, Keith.
Thanks Miguel, I had no idea.
I have watched all your work, and you are absolutely the only person that could ever take over for Chris
Gary, thank you very much for watching my videos and kind comments! All the best.
Outstanding Miguel! If Chris Squire ever gets hit by a bus, I would imagine you would certainly have the job!
Incredible cover! Your playing is beautiful. Thanks for the outstanding video!!!!
Thank you!
Best solo bass ever! Excellent choice and excellent played!
+Veruska Maciel Thank you so much!
Awesome. Bravo! I love this song. So unique! Funky, but with Yes' genius higher level harmony!
Thank you, Matthew!
Thank you so much! I know there are many better songs played by Chris, but this is the one I prefer when talking about bass playing.
This is a fabulous song in a very different phase of the band… and I love it too!
This is one of my favorite Yes songs. I had no idea it was so complicated. Watching you play and hearing that bass sing is beautiful. Great job, Miguel.
A great bass line played as it should have been. Bravo!
Thank you very much Paul.
Simplesmente o melhor cover do Chris!
Muito obrigado!

Hi Ana! You can watch the latest one ;) - Happy new Year!
Thank you very much. It makes me very happy to know that!
Another home run. Love the sound of this bass. Looks so badass. Why didn’t I ever buy one?
I got mine on eBay some time ago. It’s a 1990! model. No Gibson is selling (re-issuing) the ones non-reverse like Chris’ but they changed the headstock and to me it lost its character.. go for a used one ;)
Just stumbled across this. My God, what a TONE! Fantastic rendition!
Thank you Glenn!
Flawless as always. As a bass player myself it's always a joy to see your videos.
Simply great! Congratulations!

Hey Miguel! You nailed it once again my friend! Thank you for everything you do in honoring Chris. I have searched the world over and cannot find anyone that can hold a candle to your CS covers. As always, I will be waiting for more from you! Take good care!
