We've Already Lost Too Many Downton Abbey Actors

- For six seasons between 2010 and 2015, Downton Abbey viewers followed the intricate lives of the haves and have-nots surrounding the wealthy Crawley family in post-Edwardian England. It was an unexpected hit, both in the UK and the States - known for presenting a more balanced depiction of aristocracy and the working class than other period dramas, Downton Abbey had drama - even melodrama - to spare.
When the cast reunited for Downton Abbey’s feature film in 2019, fans welcomed the return of their favorite faces. In 2021, it was announced that there would be a second film, although, unfortunately, not every beloved character is set to return, as the actors behind them have passed on. We’ve already lost too many Downton Abbey actors.

It is a testament of the quality and level of acting that so many older actors are still working and getting the right parts to play. I admire british acting for so long now, in movies and tv-series, and it strikes me that writers include all ages within a storyline, as is the case here in Downton Abbey. Very well deserved mentioning the actors that have passed away in recent years.
Ronald Pickup and Tim Piggot-Smith were favorite actors of mine. Very versatile and talented.
I am 73, and I hate to hear about someone died suddenly @72...and those who were even younger!
What a fantastic series that was. Couldn’t have had a better cast. Didn’t want it to end.
I didn't realize Charlie Carson's old Music Hall partner was played by Nicky Henson. I remember him as the open shirted guest in Fawlty Towers!
They were all treasured British actors of a certain age. Most had long lives but it’s still sad to hear of their passings.
Thank you for making this tribute to a huge crowd of talented actors. They will be sadly missed as I'm watching the series for the 3rd time in a many days! It's my favorite. My husband got me the series and movie for Christmas! Gb~ Mamaw Christy
Ronald Pickup's voice might be known to many people in their 30s and 40s because he voiced Aslan the lion in the BBC miniseries of The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe that was shown on PBS.. My kid's' favorite line from that series was voiced by Mrs Beaver "You don't suppose the sewing machine is too heavy to take>". Mrs Beaver was voiced by none other than Lesley Nichol, Mrs Patmore on DA.
R.I.P. TO ALL THE ACTORS WHO HAVE PASSED AWAY . FROM U.K.
I loved, loved, loved this great series. Love to see a second versions of this great DA program. Please
We love the movie and Downton Abbey; we hope another movie is being made…..great show, excellent acting, superb storyline!
Such an enormous loss of excellent talent. You will all be so missed.
Thank you for this update; except for Tim Pigott-Smith, I didn't know that they had passed on. Their contributions to the series can not be overstated. 😭
What incredible actors, they will be missed
Tim Pigott Smith’s role in Jewel in the Crown was genuinely chilling.
What an iconic actor! If you have not seen this series , look out for it.
It ‘s British Drama at its best.
That's what I know him from!
Exactly. To classify him as a Downton Abbey actor is a bit much for us privileged to be Masterpiece Theater viewers from the very beginning.
@@faithworldleader6891 I will never forget his performances in the BBC Shakespeare series. A Hotspur and Angelo for the ages!
@@kennethwayne6857 i will look them up. Thank you. I saw him in the Tempest in Bath. I went to thank him after the show x then felt too shy...an amazing performance x
RIP Thank you. 🦋🦋❤️❤️❤️❤️🦋🦋
Oh! Had not known about Nicky Henson’s death. So sad. I saw him as Mordred in CAMELOT in London many years ago and was blown away by his work. I was 16.
That was too sad I had to stop watching. Some of us are also on our last legs. 😕
It's called life, we're all suffering from it.
This was interesting. Thank you!
Some British Actors & Actresses are like Supermarine Spitfire , Range Rover , Jaguar , Bentley & Rolls Royce of the Theatre World! May Good Gods & Goddesses Protect & Blessed the Worthy Ones to a Better World & Realm! 🕯🌷🌿🌍🇬🇧
Very interesting indeed! Thank you! 👍👍👍
Fellows wrote the scene of the Dowager awarding the cup at the flower show to Mr. Mosely Sr. as a tribute to the great British film "Mrs. Miniver"
Mrs Miniver is a Hollywood film made in the USA, it’s based on an English newspaper column, but in itself it’s not really British.
Yes, Luann, that’s what told my husband. I love Mrs. Miniver.

They left the work behind them, and much more than so many of us may say.
Perfect video. Happy Friday
aw man :( i knew the actress who played bates’ mom died but had no idea so many others died as well
The dowager rewarding the gardener, Mosley with first prize for his rose is the story line lifted completely from the movie, 'Mrs. Miniver', the 1942 American romantic war drama film directed by William Wyler, and starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon.Inspired by the 1940 novel Mrs. Miniver by Jan Struther.
Loved that film.
Very interesting. Thank you
one of the best series
condolences to their family and friends.
I have read Tim Pigott Smith’s bio and found out he died a normal death but he had projects he was going to work on. He was also in “North and South”, Johnny English (2003) etc (I know he was in much more roles but some British drama talks of things we know nothing about - jokes referring to topics we know nothing about). Ronald Pickup acted in Henry VIII played by Richard Burton! I didn’t see him much but have seen in Horatio Hornblower and Inspector Lewis/Hathaway.
Tim P.Smith was terrific in The Jewel in the Crown. Outstanding series.
North and South is a grand series!
I'm so sorry for Everyone who feel the pain of death over these losses.
I wish the people who said that Downton Abbey was coming back, need to say, for just the movie. Downton Abbey is out now or it's coming out Christmas 2021.I think that they lead us to believe Downton Abbey was truly coming back to television. It's only a pipe dream.
They did it with Star Trek! And now, it's Downton Abbey. ❤️🙏❤️
In my opinion Ronald Pickup’s portrayal in the 1980’s rare BBC Radio version of Hamlet was the BEST ever acted, particularly due to the acting challenge of portraying the part without visuals. Hard to locate now.
RIP Sir. Now I’ll go have a listen.
Been watching the early series of Casualty. Both Bernard Gallagher and Christopher Rozycki were original cast members.
Some of them still quite young, in their seventies :( .
Excellent je l'ai regardé 3 fois 👍👍👍👍👍🙏
Moi aussi!
Et moi
Four times for me! I’m just beginning the fifth. It’s ruined me for any other TV!
It’s not that surprising. Almost every guest actor in the series was in their 70s but, in their few episode, they were more interesting than “Mary’s Men” who really kind of bored me.
I remember all these characters, but most of them would not have been returning anyway. I will miss Prince Kuragin tho…
Rip
Sorry, to hear of this.
Nicky Henson had also starred in the cult horror film, Psychomania AKA Death Wheelers.
The Characters had their time and finished their contribution, it's not like the Actors died in the middle of the part and had to be quickly written out.
Why did I watch that. So depressing :P
I had wondered why we weren't seeing Mosley's Dad in the Movies😢
Prince Koo-rah-gheen!
Oh I love the Elder Mr Moseley!!! Oh hated dr. Tapsell!!!!
"Hate" is a strong word.
@@noelt2238 for me it fits.
@@noelt2238 have you seen the episode with Dr. Tapsell? He was such an arrogant jerk!
One of the few tv series and films not to be made ridiculously woke. Excellent scripts and acting.
😔😔😔
“Lost too many?”
What, exactly, is the correct amount?
All great actors but basically mostly peripheral characters. And dear god, please learn how to pronounce names. Sir Mark wasn't upset that Barrow needed a night off, he was shocked that the cook would be serving dinner, as that just wasn't done.
I still can't watch Sybil's death. It has to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've ever watched. It still hurts.
For myself, I really don’t mind since I never watch a single episode, not even a 2 minutes abstract from the series.
Your great loss. Best cast, acting and script out there!
Les misera blah? That caught my attention.
What’s the music playing in the background starting at 5:21?
Greetings From Florida 🌴 Gone to Glory 🌈 R.I.P....Living Now in The Most Beautiful House of All ...God’s 🙏
Most of these character's story arc is finished and not trying to be rude, but their passing wouldn't affect the show in any matter.
Definitely miss
The current actors is all most of us know. Why not carry that on
They stole the Rose bit out of Mrs. Minniver
Good reddens to him
All are 70 plus who died
She would be carrying it into the dining room - oops
We all bite the dust someday! And their day came
So, agèd actors died. No surprise there. Btw, Prince Kuragin’s last name is pronounced with the accent on the second syllable. The narrator should have known that.
Title misleading!!! Old stubborn coots must go eventually. Out witht the old and in with the new. Not enough gone to say you can not go on..
They were also all very old.
at 72, I can assure you it doesn't feel old
@@marilynrebouche719 ^ i agree. Someone in their 70’s isn’t ‘old,” that’s ‘well aged.”
My great-grandmother dying at almost 98 years old was ‘old.’
Whats the difference for s lost of an actor or your neighbour. Both people with the same beginning and end.
The talent is the difference.
@@pamelaharris2655 do you know the talents of all people that die. We all have talents. But because your face is not on tv yours doesn’t count and you can be missed and are never to much of a lost. Great mindset.
Hi
Jane Wenham was an ACTRESS, not an actor!!
I honestly don't remember any of these roles. Ijs. RIP
F
Not enought.
The Downton curse ?
No. Choose any group of older folks, and you will see deaths occur over a 5-year period.
Hardly. They were older people.. not at all strange they should pass away
I think they should simply cast other actors for the roles. They could even revive Matthew with some other actor playing the role. It is just fictional. They gave JR a new mother, Donna Reed, for a season and then brought back Belle Geddes, as his mother. Donna Reed might not have been the right character. Probably they chose her because she was a famous actress. A better choice might not have been as famous and was not tried out. And of course they have replaced other characters in series. Look how many James Bonds there have been. It might not work, if viewers are so attached to the particular actors. Well, then create a similar series with similar characters played by other actors or whoever fits in the roles. It is not as though the actor was the character. But fans probably do not see it that way. I remember they once tried a Perry Mason show with a different actor, and it only lasted a season. But that is the breaks. They do have to be careful about recasting popular characters. No Maverick was as good as James Garner, and no Perry Mason was as good as Raymond Burr. But hopefully there can be good recasts. Look at all the good Sherlock Holmes actors. Basil Rathbone was ok, but some of the others are just as good.
Except Donna reed was AWFUL as miss Ellie.
Miss Ellie was known to be, excuse my language, full of “piss and vinegar” and Donna reed was too goody-goody.
Well, if you have lots of old dinosaur actors, you have to expect them to die off sometime.
You need to stop allowing hollyweird to dictate your idea of “old dinosaur actors.” 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀
