Seeing a show actually take time; in this case, an entire episode, to show and explore the impact that death actually has was so eye for me, as I saw this show first year of highschool and never had really seen media treat the topic as well as Madoka. Realistically, unless you have knowledge of the magical girl genre Mami's death should not be as impactful as it is (though it definitely has lost some level of visceral impact, as it's become more common due to its influence in other shows), we knew relatively little about Mami compared to how much other shows build up their characters for the viewer to care even a little, and the show even waved as many death flags as possible for anyone who isn't aware of the genre/is familiar with subversions of it. Yet, just due to how the show presents the ramifications and doesn't just forget about Mami once the initial impact is over, Madoka is able to do so much more than just shock the viewer. Part of me really wishes that more shows would take time to show to what extent death impacts everything and everyone that encounters it. Sure, I get the point of some depictions of mass death and murder go by quick and shockingly to prove how cold and impartial death is, or how someone is such a monster that they don't care; but eventually going back, and slowing down, to show even 5 minutes of someone grieving outside of just a funeral scene would do wonders for so many shows. Though at the same time going through that on a regular basis, so it's best that there's plenty of things that also don't do that.
