Hey! Allow me to explain it to you: It's basically a battle-brothers meme; No one levels a stat called "Ranged defense", which is basically how well a character avoids projectiles, like arrows. The reason for that is that people just tend to rush these archers or armor up to tank the arrows. Levelling stats for characters (called brothers) are scarce and it is not smart to put points into ranged defense, since HP, fatigue, melee defense, or melee attack is much, much more important. However, this leaves all characters of players usually prone to arrow projectile attacks. Some enemy parties do have capable archers and they can become a real nuisance when you're outnumbered and they whittle away at you. However they become little trouble later in the game when all your characters are geared, hence they're not useful for late game, and also not that useful during early and mid-game because not all enemy mobs use projectiles (undead, beasts...)
basically in a nutshell enemies can hit you 100% of the time your own mercs can't even hit anything 99% of the time yet they're magnets to melee and ranged attacks
That picture reminds me of the first time I tried to lay Siege in Mount & Blade I made the mistake of running straight LOL😂 I got hit with like 15 arrows at once got stagger than hit with another 15😂 fastest stage ever lol
@@tomendruweit9386 you can still use a shield tho, the crossy and crossbow only take 3 slots and you have 4, plus if you don't have a shield in sieges you will have to stay behind your troops the whole siege and wont be able to fight at all, plus you never know when you're getting a crossbow bold to the head in the middle of a battle
@@themeerkat5157 my other slot is filled with either a spear, a javelin or a back up short weapon. And Bannerlord has a lot of cover set up in sieges from where one can snipe the enemy. And you likley won't get hit climbing the siege tower or ladder anyways.
I'll give some of my back line ranged def. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter; the AI will just focus down your brother with the weakest ranged defense anyway.
Giving the backline rdeff is actually smart, they're often more vulnerable and with how scattering works they're more likely to be hit by ranged attacks during melee engagements than the actual frontline
@@yunogasai3350 Yup. And considering my rear lines are the most important (this isn't to say my frontline shield bros aren't valuable, they can just tank more), my archers and non-shielded glass cannons have to be able to have some protection. So rdef is definitely reserved for the rear.
They don't really focus down the weakest range defence, there's variance in their attacks I know a guy who built an arrow sponge, a dude with terrible ranged defence so he would soak all the damage Did not work
To further ADDRESS this issue, the AI generally targets the character with the lowest ranged defense so your party's ranged defense is only as low as your lowest member's generally speaking so it's pointless to level it on anyone but that guy.
every single hostile thing in Battle Brothers : can hit every single thing, plus can evade every single attack your own brothers you hired : can't even hit the broad side of a windmill, plus are literally melee and ranged magnets
I find the late game so difficult because contracts don’t pay out that much money even in the late game in comparison to what you will lose for harder contracts. For example I was offered 6k gold to hold a fort for a contract which I accepted. Little did I realize I would have multiple waves of enemies thrown at me and the last one had something like 18 to 24 veteran troops with a few knights and 2 or 3 blade masters. Which would be an extremely tough fight normally but a lot of my brothers were already injured from the previous assaults and their armor wasn’t fully repaired either. I normally don’t save scum, but the best I could do is win the battle and lose 3 or 4 high leveled brothers. The crappiest thing as well is that if they die a lot of times the armor they are wearing is just lost. literally a single plate armor is worth more then 6k not to mention the brother wearing the armor that is like level 8 to 10 by this point. It makes me wonder how you are supposed to even approach the late game normally because losing even a single brother with high quality armor is almost always many times the value of the reward. Atleast in the early game pay is decent, everything can be bought cheaply, and wages are cheap making trading more profitable.
@@caelcdye9575 i find them hard and difficult too, early and mid game was hard already, but late game is just bullying you, honestly, fighting a bunch of Greenskins for a faction isn't worth it, I'd rather chase a brigand thug group and bring back a stolen item
@@OperatorMax1993 even the noble houses are shit to fight because if any of your guys die although the pay is relatively better then other contracts its also the hardest. If they have a blademaster as well almost always someone is going to die no matter how well you try and single them out. A single death in the late game is so expensive as well as I said earlier that the price of everything you loot plus the completion fee is usually significantly less then the price of your brother and his gear. Also 90% of the time when you take a contract (to fight humans atleast) the armor the enemy is wearing or sometimes weapon(s) are worth multiple times what the contract is paying out. The worst part is getting the armor generally requires surrounding said guy with armor after you kill everyone else. The guys you have surrounding said guy are usually exhausted by this point and pulling out knives and using the attack that pierces armor has a very low hit rate and builds up so much fatigue. Against enemies later on that can have 100+ hp it will often times take 6 or more successful stabs to kill them. Plus if you are constantly using this ability you probably cant shieldwall for the extra defense. Although if you have multiple guys you will usually eventually get them. The question is how many guys will the guy you are surrounding kill before then. If they have a two handed weapon with the cleave attack unless your guys are already geared to the nines and don't need the armor anyway you are probably going to lose atleast 1 brother sometimes as many as 3 or 4. If you are in the end game the armor you are getting might be worth a similar amount to the one you just lost off the brother that got decapitated plus you lost that brother and all their training plus recruitment cost. The economy in the late game just feels so overwhelmingly punishing.
@@caelcdye9575 indeed, good armor, good weapons and good mercenaries cost an entire national treasure, i want to like this game, same with Stoneshard, but the RNG is just unmerciful
@@OperatorMax1993 Personally I like the way XCOM 2 balances it a lot more. At higher difficulties on ironman especially early on the difficulty is pretty brutal. I remember in the successful run I had on the 2nd highest difficulty in the early game I lost half the missions I attempted giving me penalties as well as most of my soldiers, so not many survived very long to get promotions. Then you get better armor and weapons and you increase your squad size as well so you have more actions points per turn to deal with threats and you start losing less troops. Your troops survive longer to get more upgrades which in turn increases both their damage and survivability. This snowballs harder in the late game and everything becomes a lot easier but not super easy. Losing a high level soldier is still really really tough and can set things back. However, due to the way xcom works getting a troop to max level isn't as hard as battle brothers and their survivability is pretty good where nothing will ever one or even usually two shot them at max level. Also I don't think there is any wage cost as well to upkeep, so having reserve soldiers is more viable since they don't bleed money. In addition you don't need to expend exorbitant amounts to get the perfect soldiers with the perfect traits to fill out your dream roster since all base soldiers as far as I am aware are the same. In addition you don't lose non legendary equipment if the unit you have holding it dies in battle. Also probably the biggest change is almost always every mission you go on feels worth it especially in the end game. The rewards can give you high level troops, lots of money or supplies, or they can nerf the enemy hard on future missions for a time to make a hard fight in the future easier. If you get knocked down and lose a fight badly it always feels like you can bounce back with some effort but its not catastrophic (unless you lose the base defence mission in which case you lose the game). Battle brothers is just too unforgiving especially in the late game where often times it feels like you can't save everyone or someone dies by bad luck. You are suddenly in the hole for atleast 3 more missions which are even harder since you are missing an experienced unit.
The only way I could see ranged defense being useful is to intentionally have a battle brother with low ranged defense and battleforged soak arrows while everyone else with higher defense doesn't get targeted. But again you don't have to level ranged defense, you can simply use kite shields for specific fights like goblins. Its more important to use low ranged defense brothers properly than its important to have anyone specifically have it high. Earlygame, I will trade one brothers disintegrated armour for the enemies oppurtunity cost of not bringing more powerful meele units. By the time the archers are able to pincushion one of my men im already in their backline, and the guy that was targeted I can simply pull him out of the fight. Initiative builds could capitalize on Dodges added range defense, use them to rush a backline. Anyway melee is superior in this game, and most of the dangerous encounters are meele orientated anyways.
the problem is that its easier to max out MA and MD and just CHARGE at the enemy mele infantry and make bows irrelevant anyway by the time bows stack damage you already shredded the infantry and released the hounds 30 MD is good if you get it higher you can just charge i mean congrats you got like....................3 arrows in me now watch me make this 3 man group dissapear in 2 turns
