I did three additional steps to the Shelby drop. 1: Put new upper control arm bushings and biased the shaft rearward 1/8th of an inch adding more caster. 2: Used 1975 Maverick spindels with off set ball joints adding additional caster. 3: Installed 1968 Mustang big block springs with 1/3rd of a coil removed. Results were addiitonal caster, minimal shimming and no nose dive allowing for more tire clearance, larger upper ball joints and outer tie rod ends, wheel bearings and disc brakes.
Digging your channel. I just started doing pretty much everything to my base-base-base model '65 fastback (didn't even come equipped with windshield washers or back up lights!). Engine/trans swap w/ aftermarket EFI, subframe reinforcement, front disc brakes, suspension upgrades, wheels/tires. It never ends. Your tutorials make an easy-to-work-on car even easier. Keep 'em coming!
love the video, good content and youre not monotone which makes the video exciting. one thing id suggest is the music. the music itself isnt what im talking about its the fading from clip to clip. when you go from you talking to you working theres no transition. if you faded it so the music still plays in the background and lower the volume of the music when youre working, the video would go from 95% to 100%. not bashing but its something to think about. keep up the good work
Did good man just would like to se you struggle a bit so nobody thinks it’s that easy sometimes it takes a little bit but take a little bit and approach it a different way I mean it helps me just try it it might help you why not you have nothing to lose but time time is precious!!!
Great Channel, I grew up with these early Mustang I have owned two 66 Coupes and a 70 Fastback. I've been in the car business now for the last 20 years. I have personally owned everything from Corollas to Corvette ZR1. The early Mustang hot rods are still my favorite of all!
Thanks for this how to, I've been searching for an in depth video on this drop for a while, now that I know how simple it is I'm definitely gonna do this with mine!
Vintage Speed anf Performance has a video on how to build the templates yourself and how to compete the drop...part 1 building the template ruclips.net/video/5zpoTbroTVE/видео.html part 2 dropping the control arms ruclips.net/video/cxmIxSAvovY/видео.html
They also make a kit to relocate the ball joint on the A arm, I think it’s called the negative wedge, or something like that, that helps with your handling as well. I have 69 Mach one that I’ve done for Shelby drop and the negative wedge and it actually handles very well. Of course it has very specific alignment specs as well
The kit I put on my ‘65 (in 1990) required a wedge to limit binding on the ball joint. New to your videos, so I’m wondering if you had replaced it already. The Shelby drop is worth every penny. Good stuff!
Nice ride. I had a '66 coupe between 1980 and 87 that I did the same mod to along with cut down springs and Koni shocks. It also had the 'glass valance like yours and JC Whitney 'glass flares on the rear (both 1/4 panels were pretty well trashed). Never got past primer gray but I had a hell of a lot of fun in it. Thanks for keepin' it real with the TTs too....I just hate wagon wheels on vintage cars.
Actually wasn't done to the GT500 although it can be, and later 66 GT350 didn't get it as a cost cutting/time saving measure. 65/66 go down an inch and back an 1/8 67+ just down an inch. lowers car about 5/8 of an inch. The UCA drop and a 1" sway bar will help handling a lot. Alignment should be -.5 to -1.5 camber +3 or more caster (adjustable strut rods with rod ends a huge bonus) and an 1/8" toe in Ben you may want to find your local SCCA and get involved in autox
Klaus Arning a ford engineer actually came up with the idea for the upper control arm drop. Ford decided not to use it in production so Shelby took the idea and ran with it on the GT350. Adjustable strut rods are certainly beneficial. Pair them with the vario -centric camber kit for the lower contol arm you can really dial in the handling. If you go that far install a monte carlo bar, export brace and the boss 302 style lower crossmember that ties the lower control arm mountinf points together. The steering and handling will be spot on, predictable and a hell of a lot more fun to drive on canyon roads.
Love the video bud. I had to kinda chuckle at the cotter pin instructions being a separate take. Just because its one of those things that just “are” I guess lol. But seriously, your videos are way more entertaining than most others. Only thing I wish you had was more information on the car’s internals. I know it’s not something you can help seeing as you got it that way but I’m curious nonetheless. I picked up my 67 mustang in between deployments overseas and am just now getting into the restoration. It’s going to be a bit more lengthy a process than yours was upon purchase though. I’ll gladly share some videos of the endeavor if you’re interested. Take care bud and glad to see your youth is only cosmetic. The car, the music.... speaks volumes of the old soul inhabiting. Peace brother and keep it up
it wasnt shelbys design or idea but he embraced the idea ... the idea is from Klaus Arning who was a Ford suspension engineer who designed this actually. so otherwise known as the Arning drop, be careful to make sure you dont exceed the swivel capacity of your upper ball joint as it will now need to swivel at greater angle and may bind up, some folks add a camber plate to eliminate this binding problem. called Negative camber Wedge Kit
Nice job on the video Ben. You should check out the competition engine cross members custom designed and made by Z-Ray Richter out of Oklahoma. They come with a jack pad and bolt to the frame rail and lower control arm bolt for additional strength. Also check out the adjustable camber adjustment kit from Opentracker Racing in Calif. It's an easy upgrade and allows for easier camber adjustment versus the factory way.
Loving the videos dude. Got a 64 bug and a 64 falcon, and dad has. ‘30 model A.. so very similar interests. What camera do you use? Editing color is great btw
For gods sake dont let them use factory alignment specs. Use -0.5 to -1.0 camber, +1.0 to plus +3.0 caster, no more than 1/4 degree difference side to side. 1/16" to 1/8" toe in.
They were somewhat flared before I did it. However, not too long ago the car was slightly hit and the shop that fixed it flared out the fenders even more
@@sacooper802 Yup, Arning was the German born and trained engineer who was in charge of suspension design for Ford's North American operations at the time. Today people criticize the original Mustang suspension as trash, and proof that Ford was incapable of world class engineering. The reality is that the 65 Mustang suspension came straight out of the Falcon. The Falcon was a mom 'n pop car that was designed to be as cheap as possible to manufacture. BTW, Arning designed an IRS for the 65 Mustang that was never put into production because Ford Management decided that it would be too costly to install in a cheap, disposable car like the Mustang. Ford did use that IRS on some of its race cars where it was noticed by engineers from Benz, who went on to copy the design and put it into production.
@@FourSpeedFilms looking forward to it. BTW my Aldan American adjustable coilovers turned up this week. Exciting! I've also just installed a set of OBDII Speedhut gauges (LS3 conversion). You should check Speedhut's site out and play with the custom gauges!
Great video man, dont pay attention to the armchair video directors, dont change a thing, Might be picking up a 65 this weekend, if so will be starting with disc brakes and then....? Be in touch, Albuquerque NM. Thx
I like how it's straight to the point unlike other channels... Where we see them buy Starbucks and pet their dog....
That’s the point haha! Thanks for watching
Don't know if it's just me but your voice was too low in comparison with the music
fuck you
Was thinking the same thing but enjoyed the video regardless!
Yeah I kept having to turn the volume up and down lol
Just you
Same here lol
Good stuff, Ben. We at the Vintage Mustang Forum are fans of your work. Keep doing what you’re doing and come say hi to us Mustang nerds at the VMF.

Haha!
Straight to the point, clear instructions, showed how easy it was for something that seemed daunting to me.
You gained a sub man!
Before and after would've been appreciated. Looking forward to more videos!

Good video, but I would have mentioned the UCA shims and that getting an alignment is a must after this mod is made.

loving the content! I just got a 66 mustang from an auction and can't to get my hands dirty

Thanks!
Pardon me sir but what’s the biggest tires I could place once I do the Shelby drop without having them run on the fender lip? Thank you.
please in the future don’t speed up the processes or at least not as fast so that your videos are longer
Ky Roberts it was a pretty cut and dry mod....I appreciated he sped up the super easy stuff and got to the point.

Man,! Looking awesome Ben!,,,Great vid man!,,,,,
Thanks!
I like your update's in Mustang 65 , I was wondering what kind of Gauge Replacement Kit and if you have videos that would be nice
Was your car already lowered? Does the Shelby mod lower the car, and if so, by how much? Nice car....
You should get the alignment checked after doing this. The "Shelby Drop" adds caster and it also adds negative camber.
Im taking it right when I get my new tires👍🏼
@@FourSpeedFilms Which tires did you end up choosing?
You’ll see soon😉

I like your style of videos, keep it up!👍🏼🤙🏼

Actually enjoyed your video. Glad you put a list of tools and camera equipment but could you please put a link to the parts?
I’m also a SF Valley local…where did you take the car for a proper classic wheel alignment after completing the Arning drop?
it wasnt shelbys design or idea but he embraced the idea ... the idea is from Klaus Arning who was a Ford suspension engineer who designed this actually. so otherwise known as the Arning drop, be careful to make sure you dont exceed the swivel capacity of your upper ball joint as it will now need to swivel at greater angle and may bind up, some folks add a camber plate to eliminate this binding problem. called Negative camber Wedge Kit

Forgot to add Z-Ray's user name on ebay. It's espfilms, he's a real gentleman to deal with. Same goes for John at Opentracker racing.
Cool! I’ll check it out! Thanks🏁
Yay video!! Almost 20k subs mah dude
Almost! I just need to post more and not lag😂
Did you put in a wedge for the upper ball joint on this Shelby drop to stop upper ball joint binding

Don't forget there are specific alignment specs for the Shelby drop.
I’m taking it to a shop after I get new tires👍🏼
For gods sake dont let them use factory alignment specs. Use -0.5 to -1.0 camber, +1.0 to plus +3.0 caster, no more than 1/4 degree difference side to side. 1/16" to 1/8" toe in.

Cool collection of cars dude!
Most of them are my dads😂
Just bought a wrecked Shelby GT350 for a steal🔥 It's my dream car 🙏
Bad ass!
God damn she looks good lowered. Keep up the good work dude👍🏻
Much appreciated!
Great video, I'm doing this in the next few weeks. What size tyres are you running?
What are the specs of houten rond and tired? Hoe much is IT lowered front and back
Did you end up needing to flare your front fenders at all?
They were somewhat flared before I did it. However, not too long ago the car was slightly hit and the shop that fixed it flared out the fenders even more
What size wheels and tires are you running? Did you have any run problems in the front?
So how much would this impact dirt road/ overland driving?
Dont you need the top balljoint wedge so it dosn't
Snap or pop out due to the new balljoint angle?
Have you consider change to tubular upper control arm with the aldan coil over and if it is wich One are you consider?
Sweet work! What size wheels and tires are on the car?
Can we get a link to the template kit? Please and thank you!

Keep it up ur videos are awesome!!! Keep pushing out content!
Much appreciated!
My experience is that it lowered the car about 1/2 and inch but after the performance alignment it was more than an inch.
Nice! Do your tires hit the fenders when turning now that you lowered suspension?
What size are your wheels? I just got a 67 vert and looking at some new wheels for it.
Kroil Oil is the shit! Great videos. Great Channel!
Much appreciated!
What size tires are you running? Do they rub?
FINALLY A NEW VIDEO
I’ll have better stuff coming soon!
Good helpful video Ben. Are you doing anything with the rear leafs?
Thanks! I have lowered hotchkis leafs, a sway bar, and Aldan shocks so their really isn’t anything else I can do
@@FourSpeedFilms Ok great thanks for naming the parts .
I never knew this was called the Shelby drop. I’ve always known it as the Gulstrand Mod. Awesome addition either way.
aslo called the Arning drop, he gave the idea to shelby, he was a ford suspension engineer.

OK, So where did you get the kit??
Where did you buy the Shelby drop template?
Did your pinion angle change ?
which coil overs did you go with? looks like QA1?
Did it make much of difference in ride height or way it handles?
Do the front tires rub fender while turning after this drop?
I just did this mod, waiting for my alignment later this week.

It definitely changes the alignment. It doesn’t drop the car that much tho
