- This is Triangle X Squared O: The Wrestling Game Retrospective Series. We’ve covered some of the classics on here, haven’t we? From the SmackDown vs. RAW games to WWF No Mercy, Showdown: Legends Of Wrestling to the Def Jam series, we’ve had variety on variety. 4 years ago I did an episode on Backyard Wrestling: Don’t Try This At Home. A game that promised the insanity you couldn’t find in WWE as well as traditional wrestling in the confines provided, should you decide to go that route. As we all know, Backyard Wrestling is not a good game. It sucks. It over-promised and under-delivered in practically every area. Today, we turn our attention to the sequel. Backyard Wrestling 2: There Goes The Neighborhood. It can’t be worse than the original, right? Right? Well, let’s find out.

All due respect, this game was amazing for me. So much so my mom was concerned with how much I played it 🤣
I was 13 and loved ICP and deathmatch wrestling at the time (Because it was so edgy I guess, idk I grew out of it pretty fast lol) so I gazed right past the flaws and into the glass-filled abyss lol
Was it a shitty game? Kind of
Was it at least fun? Yes
Did it have a soundtrack of bangers between two games? HELL YEAH
The ICP being wary of New Jack is very understandable because of New Jack's antics, his reputation, and what he did in ECW and other independent promotions.
The dude admitted to attempting to kill Vic Grimes in a match, assaulted a minor (albeit unbeknownst to him), and imo had less wrestling ability than Shaggy 2 Dope.

I had so much fun with the BYW games back in the day with my friends, I remember playing this around the same time as the suffering and urban chaos riot response.
I was about 17 and was at that age where I could afford my own games and didn't need to wait for Christmas or birthdays. I remember when me and my friend recognized Sunrise Adams from a porno VHS that got passed around our little group 😂😂
That Kevin guy was at the ICP London show I was at, he kept coming on stage talking to us about how crap the UK government is and stuff

X Men Mutant Academy was so Good played a lot of it back in the day on ps1. I liked the cheese of Backyard Wrestling 1&2 its not for everybody but it is what it is. The 2nd one has more depth to it than the first game. Plus the inclusion of wrestlers like ECW's Sandman Sabu, an New Jack also Sonjay Dutt of TNA an now AEW is really cool to see. It makes me think of what a third game would have been like on newer systems like a ps3 or Xbox 360. WOW I didn't know Jeff Hardy was gonna be in the game an CM Punk that's crazy. Awesome work brotha. I remember renting this and just thinking to myself omg this sucks lol but it's the memories we make with these games that matter. The time I spend with my brother and cousins playing this was amazing! Now, am the only one left who plays video games and am left with just the memory. Yeah game is trash but those times we're golden🙏

Never made, but the lead dev Kevin Gill has said in interviews that if there was enough interest he'd be open to it.
I got to play this, this past summer having missed out on it when it originally came out and I thought it was fun. As a kid I definitely thought X-Men Mutant Academy was fun too
I’ve never played either of these, this was during a time when my gaming was at an all-time low. Getting to revisit these titles through this show is one of the many things I love about 616, super cool that the dude answered some of your questions. Imagine CM Punk calling this dude before the deadline, woulda been interesting if he made it into the final version haha. AND we got GM Showdown 2 next month? Hell yeah. Great video man!

With this, TNA Impact, Raw 2 & Here Comes The Pain, Jeff Hardy has a lot of bad luck with wrestling game appearances.
As for the game, I grew up with the 1st Backyard wrestling title. I played it a bit, as well as Backstage Assault, but it wasn’t as fun as the SVR games. I still played them, cause I got them both as a gift from my grandma.

Seeing as Jeff Hardy has a very toxic history with wrestling in general, it doesn't surprise me that he just stopped talking. Seems like something 100% plausible.

Yeah, that game isn't NEARLY as bad as people make it out to be.
It's no masterpiece, it's a 6/10 in my opinion, but there's some fun stuff to do in the game.

I really appreciated you talking about the genuine enjoyment one can experience from a piece of art that has never been viewed positively, because that is exactly where I’ve always been at with WCW/nWo Thunder. As I’ve mentioned in the past, that game was my first serious dive into the world of professional wrestling, so, naturally, I have a lot of nostalgia associated with it. It’s honestly really funny to think that I started watching WCW because of a game that most people view as an undeniable piece of shit, but I legitimately don’t give a fuck 😂 I was a WCW kid before I had ever even seriously watched the actual product, and it’s all thanks to a subpar video game. I don’t know about anybody else, but I personally think that’s pretty cool 😊
You know reading this comment reminded me. I got introduced to WCW as well with WCW Mayhem but the time I got the game the company was already gone. I’m glad you got nostalgia for Thunder it’s really cool to see what others enjoy for one reason or another especially one as personal for you. Cool stuff are you into every retro gaming or ever thought about getting into it?
The wu tang game slaps but not alot of people know it came about bc Thrillkill was cancelled and they needed something to use the engine for so what better than a wu tang clan fighter
Edit: im pretty sure the backyard wrestling games use a modified version of that engine

I’m so happy Nick Mondo got to be in a wrestling game, even if it’s Backyard Wrestling 2, he deserved it so much.
Dude was ridiculously underrated and is one of very few early Deathmatch scene wrestlers that can could work at today’s standard and thrive. If he had started a few years later he would’ve been a star of the X-Division for sure.

I own this game for Xbox. For a time, I convinced myself that this game was okay. A below average but “it has potential.” Then, after many years, I regained a copy of Def Jam: Fight for NY. After playing some of that, I realized that FfNY is pretty much Backyard Wrestling 2 but with a development team that was worth a damn. Better controls, better career/story mode, better character creation suite, more moves and FAR less glitches among other things that put it over BYW2 easily. This game is trash, pure and simple, and I haven’t gone back to it since. Did enjoy the cutscenes, though. Poor Kelvin. 😂
EDIT: Oops! Almost forgot to mention that the G4 video included on the disc was my introduction to the channel so that was pretty cool, too.
Yea but def jam doesn't have all the backyard spots that you can do here. The glitches was because there was so much freedom here unlike a regular fighter like def jam
I play X-men mutant academy 2. I still own it too this day on my ps1. Highly underrated. The game play is great for its time. One of my favorite fighting games

When I found the BYW games and started playing, I had so much fun.
I didn't even really care about the quality, I was just happy to see my favorite Indy stars in a video game.

I get the feeling that Japanese wrestling game had online play first. I think SD vs. RAW was the first outside of Japan.
Also, SVR came out just 2 weeks before this game in NA and just a week in Europe. So I wouldn't really make a big deal out of saying it was the first.

Im interested in your take on legends of wrestlemania considered its the first real wrestling game i ever played that i basically finished and enjoyed or shouldve said had fond memories with, despite its reviews and inaccuracies ( No Big Winged Eagle Belt !!) I will always hold this game in high regard.

Blitz just ended 4 months ago, dude. Like I've said many times, if we do a Monday Night Blitz 3, it'll probably be a Patreon show. The audience for Season 2 was much smaller than Season 1, and it was at a level that was harming the channel. I love doing Monday Night Blitz, so Season 3 is definitely possible, but it wouldn't be here on RUclips.

ill be 30 in Dec, no, it's not an amazing game, but I can tell you for a period in 06? it didn't leave my ps2 for awhile, just because I was enjoying how badly good it was to me. I was also, heavily involved in Juggalo subculture at the time, other than a WWE game, this, and Getting Up were HEAVY in my rotation, in like 06-07
I really only enjoyed the game because of the roster and the weed Wacker, absolutely love Nick Mondo and Ryuji Ito, shame they couldn't be in a game with proper wrestling mechanics

I did a lot of a story mode with backyard wrestling to I got old lot of the Championships never really beat the game the game play was not good but it was alright that's what I get for my brother giving me this game for Christmas from Disc Replay
New Jack was a damned psycho from shiving a dude he was working with, going into business for himself on Gypsy Joe, The Mass Transit incident, and let's not forget he admitted to trying to unalive Vic Grimes during a scaffold match. Only if you were unfamiliar with that body of work would you trust New Jack and even then... well... his erraticness would make you very weary.
