Playing the CYBER BASS
This Custom Bass guitar for the Marble Machine X is a 4 string bass built on a 5 string neck, 4 Mics (one per string) and today I am adding the FUNKALIZER. An adjustable felt pad that can be pushed onto the strings and dampening the sound. This is designed to shorten the notes when the Cyber Bass is played by the Marble Machine X.
Take care and Good luck with everything you are doing! Martin
The 3d printed Metal Wings/marble guides you can see is printed by Desktop Metal and designed by Phillip Brown, i will cover them more in upcoming episodes!

That’s Martin as we know him: chopping up perfectly good parts, using washers as spacers... please don‘t change!
He's got a big chopper and he's not shy about using it.
Anyone who makes a part for him knows the risk!
🤣 yeah that about sums it up
You mean your not supposed to use washers as spacers? XD
washer as spacer = shim
Can we just talk about that transition with the table for a second?
Went back and watched it twice.
Only twice? I had to watch it 4-5 times to really get what happened. It was excellently executed!
9:10 for anybody wondering
i was thinking the same
watched repeatedly, and in Slo-Mo. WOW
that transition is why I came to comments! Craftsmanship + design + inspiration = Art
I often come back to this video to listen to this track... It's amazing!
Dude same, about once a month
Petition to release this as a seperate track! Holy shit it's amazing
Loving the music in this episode, would happily listen to it on repeat!
Yes I would love that. ❤👍
This reminded me a little Castlevania Symphony of the night soundtrack song titled Crystal Teardrops. You should check it out.
Best theme music of any wintergaten vid

Noooooo! MY BRIDGE!!! HOW COULD YOU???
Just kidding of course. Here on the MMX team, we know that "grinding is the sincerest form of flattery" and take such "modifications" as a serious badge of honor...
That bridge is absolutely gorgeous. You guys did a fantastic job! I'd say it is definitely a badge of honor.. he said to himself "no other bridge will do... i'll just make a small modification to this perfect bridge." rather than ordering another one.
It's beautiful, I'm amazed at all the professional work going into this project
Good thing it's ADHD, not OCD. Because having the top of the logo clipped instead of neatly centered would drive you NUTS. Even though its on the underside where no-one can see _I KNOW ITS THERE_ ;)
@@xheralt lol SO true.
Very nice job, you definitely took one for the team there!
Is anyone else still in awe that one person can play this many instruments by this age?
That almost seems to just slide under the radar with all the other skills matin shows in building this master piece. But wow.
What is his age actually? I think he looks younger than he actually is. But still impressive...
This mad lad is back at it again with an epic Wednesday upload. He is spoiling us with these weekly uploads that we enjoy entirely. Let’s hope that he stops our boredom right now
Martin: throws together a quick demo to exemplify a point.
Me: I could listen to this all day!
That's what they say. You know you have a good bassline when you could listen to it all by itself haha.
sucker
Same!
Hopefully someone uploads this to the bandcamp site.
Martin when it’s finished I’m begging you to release all the tracks that have been featured in the Wintergatan Wednesday videos.
i'm with you, Martin pls
yeah, even if he doesn't think they're "on brand" for his band, or worthy musically, they are all still so good! An album with all the tunes mixed and fully fleshed would be a real treat and would be like a musical diary of the machines creation
I totally agree! 👍🏻
Just FYI the song from his drum making video where he plays the saw at the end is released, it’s called Sandviken Stradivarius
Matteo Oxilia Martin did confirm that he will release those tracks
Oh god that cut right through the logo hurt my heart.
We all make sacrifices. My OCD kicked in hard too!
I stopped breathing for a second
Deep breaths.
I think the logo is on the back side of the part, pressed against the wood. Hidden. But we'll always know...
Someone should tell Martin his marble machine is missing its marbles..
9:10 I really appreciate you getting quality sound for that small scene and the fading away along with the way the transition moves is really satisfying. Great work
This comment made me happy because you said what I didn't know how to say.
The bass should be detachable so you can do a massive breakdown solo before reattaching and having the machine shred for you again hahaha
OMG!
Don't give him ideas or he'll never finish lol
@@rruckman9782 He would probably say something along the lines of "while that would be a fantastic idea, I am focused on finishing the MMX" - and then start with a detachable mechanism 3 episodes later.
Maybe only to certain songs, otherwise still fixed with some mechanism
Just have an extra bass to play solos with. Don't need to risk alignment problems when reattaching. And you can have the mmx accompanying in a duet.
these short tracks are so beautiful every time. can we get a release of all of them at some point?
check out wilson on youtube
Well yes, but what about the Wednesdays tracks? :P
Who knows, we might see them played by the machine itself
I need the "Dragon Slayer" song.
Some Guy if I’m thinking of the right one that’s released. It’s called Paradis
2:10 Damn that marble machine looks more like a time machine.
The bass controls it
As long as it plays it's s time keeping machine...
You must be new here
@@StephenFasciani does a year make me new lol
Ive been here more than two years. haven't missed an episode. Im amazed again and again every each time
It never ceases to entertain!
Me too
Maybe try using springs to push the damper plate against the knob, so that you can add a lever (like a whammy bar) to quickly change between short and long notes?
Oh man don't give him any good ideas. The machine already won't ever be done.
I think there's just barely enough room for a bistable lever to quickly swap between short and long notes without having to hold it.
I'd normally be opposed to suggesting features, but the dual screw mechanism doesn't fit functionally, even if it fits aestheticly.
I was coming to say the same thing. If he wants to be able to play himself, he should have a quick disconnect for the mute so that he can quickly get full manual control.
@@timh.6872 There is room off the bottom edge of the guitar. Normally you'd put whammy bars by the thumb area - but in context of the MMX, a lever postitioned to face the crank handle would be equally convient.
I was going to suggest the exact same thing, but with cam operated invidiual pushrods actuating a felt pad for each string.
Oh man. A pure delight. Music to my ears, rhythm for the soul.
I like the look of the normal straight cables coming out of the bass. But id recomend you to use angled ones. Less stress and chance of the cables to break.
The straight ones give a more "mad scientist" look.
But the angled ones tend to work better with cable management also
What is this "cable management" you speak of? All you need to make that build look better is RGB.
When you listed how only playing long notes sounds I was waiting for "NOT EPIC" before I remembered which channel I was watching
(edit: typos)
SLAPP like NOW!

EPICO
also this video should end up on SDIAY
I was just thinking how's he going to slap the base with a marble?
This guy is such an awesome musician and a genius as well. The opening groove blew the funk meter out of it's case
I believe that this machine being completed is going to make me feel like beating a really good game, like Final Fantasy VI or VII. The journey creating the machine and all of its components is awesome, and once it is completed it will be a real treat to hear it in action, but that means no more building and testing. On to the next project, I suppose. Loving your videos and music. The bass is insane! If you ever market those I'll take two!
Agreed but still it was enjoyable
A better idea would be to create something in a creative way. Create a buster sword or something.
that would have a hefty cost like a ~50k cost each
@@user-qk8rt9yf9v I do not believe it would be that much. You could even ship it unassembled so each user could make it unique to them. People could stain the wooden parts, blue or paint the metal ones, etc. It would not cost much to make it here in the USA anyway.
@@GuretoSefirosu I think you underestimate the cost. And cost is more then just materials.
In the next episode:
"So I undid everything from the last episode so now the bass mute can be engaged and disengaged via a foot pedal."
i really don't see how this is going to work when he has songs that require specific muting...
Minecraft Platinum Fireworks Inc. it shouldn’t change the tension on the strings, just how palm muting doesn’t change the tuning. Also, it’s so close to the bridge that the change in fulcrum point related to the string length will be negligible.
I was thinking a hand actuated lever up near the fret board would be just as quick
@@LGreymark It would be just as quick, but then Martin wouldn't have an excuse to engineer another footpedal.
@@LGreymark - Similar - I think a pad near the top of the pick board with a control lever running parallel to the neck would have been more optimal and given a better effect :/
This is my favorite episode so far (probably because of the funky, atmospheric jam). I confess that I've watched and shared it five times now. Thanks Wintergatan Wednesdays!
I love the turning MMX in the background while you were playing, really cool feel to that section of the video :D
9:13 that transition cut was amazing!!!
Honestly, if you ever produce a vinyl recore of something like this and i notice in time, i will totally buy it
The fan base: so how many instruments can you play?
Martin: ÿĖš
Drums, bass, guitar, marble machine, violin, modulin, typewriter, and I'm sure he can sing too.
Alex Snitzer Right? And he's not even that old for his level of expertise, being able to build instruments as well is also impressive by itself.

Hehe... you stole my comment. I was just going to write the exact same words. Take care. 🙏🏻
@@bobbob4173 I'm an extremely big fan of Martin. Love his music. And today on top of that I realized how comforting his trusty videos are.
You had to make a comment about it still....
I grew up in the city where Tower of Power is from (Oakland, CA), and I had never heard this before! It's from Stephen Kupka, the Bari sax player. "The horn section has always had it’s own style, its own character -- cutting the notes short, snapping them off, clicking and bumping against the rhythm section."
It reminds me of a quote from Walter Becker of Steely Dan, "we play rock and roll, but we swing when we play".
The details are what sets you apart.
9:10 holy heck that transition was incredible.
It‘s not that hard to do. It‘s still pretty nice tho!

Seeing those cables makes me want you to eventually route them all to a main strip somewhere, and/or make cable management options.
And then have a nice set of cables, like sleeved in paracord for example, in theme with everything looking nice on the machine.
Yes please tell me you have incorporated a cable management system for all the pickups, mics, and such. I want a video of that!
I would imagine the neatest way would be to have a small digital mixer built into the machine as it rely on compression and gating anyway
I was thinking he should have made them plug into the back of the guitar. Easier to hide them that way.
Seeing the four cables bouncing on the handle just screams "snag" and ripping a lot of work apart... Cable management is definitely a must and a good suggestion for a future video...even if it's not all that sexy.
there's probably something to be said for leaving them exposed. Too much focus in editing would make them a distraction, but if they can be left bouncing during play, they could give a light "living" vibe to it.
Nice throwback on that intro. I forget who it was who originally did that but it was a classic video.
Ah, I found it! Amateur is the name of the video, by Lasse Gjertsen.

But thanks!
Is it possible for the finished MMX to do a cover of Amateur? Someone in their comments said that nobody as of yet has performed the song in real time.

Lesson for the next person to make a part for Martin: Leave plenty of space around your logo to allow for bits getting cut off.
Using the black patina acid on the metal actually achieves a depth resonant with those transparent knobs, a sort of variegation that is richer than just a solid color.

Everyone is talking about how good the transition at 9:10 is
But I think what sells it is the the camera motion itself. The transition is just an angled screen wipe, but the camera motion is rotation about the X (horizontal) axis, and panning back at the same time, while being angled to the table, followed by a left strafe. That along with the silence, except for the rocking of the nob.
Bloody brilliant
What an elaborate explanation for what is nothing more than a guy hand-holding the camera to do a reveal of the tabletop.
On a side note, this guy has the best tools.

Cool people : create a band to play several instruments

If anyone has ever wanted what PURE head nodding tunes sounded/felt like. I say just listen to the first 5 minutes of this video. PURE HYPNOTIC RHYTHM!
I like to play the first 3:20 over and over. Long notes aren't sloppy, they're relaxing! Reminds me a bit of the 60's music.
One simple "ide" to improve this:
Replace the screws with a linear rod and put a spring in each side.
Build a steal bridge to join both sides (above the string bridge) and design it to be "pressable".
That way you can press for longer notes, compressing the springs, and the default being shorter notes.
Or hook it up to a foot pedal, kind of like the sustain pedal on a piano, so the bass does not tie up both hands for operation.
mmm... I guess youare probably bass players, with no idea of waht this instrument is really intended to...
