  • Harley Davidson owners typically agree that helmets suck, but it seems that more and more of us know that they can save your life. I historically have hated them, and have always done everything I can to avoid wearing one. But considering recent accidents, and all the losses I have experienced in my life, I am going to try really hard to start wearing one. In this video we'll chat about all of the helmets I have owned, from ‪@harleydavidson‬ , Daytona, ‪@BiltwellCycleParts‬ , ‪@BellHelmetsOfficial‬ , ‪@ShoeiHelmets‬ , ‪@Ruroc‬ , and others. Let me know what you think down below, what you wear, and any additional ones I should take a look at.

I always wear a helmet. 13 years ago I was wearing a half helmet when I hit a deer with my bike while doing about 50. I was lucky enough to walk away, but with my upper lip split clean trough and other abrasions to my face. I was told that without the helmet I'd probably be dead. Since I refused to stop riding when my wife asked me to, I did agree to always wear a full face helmet. May not be comfortable all the time, but it beats the alternative. Great channel!

I live in Pa and was heading out for a lunch break ride and was going to go without a helmet and then thought I would grab a half helmet. As I reached for it I was overcome with the thought that if I felt the need for a helmet I should wear a helmet, and grabbed a full face HJC hanging there. 40 minutes later a deer ran into the side of my front wheel and I high sided, into intensive care for a week. The helmet was destroyed, along with my leather jacket, boots and jeans! I always wear a full face helmet now!

Shoei, Simpson make some cool looking modular helmets but they are expensive. With a modular helmet, you can have a clear conversation at a stop light without having to yell. You can easy take a sip of water or eat a quick snack without having to take your helmet off. Also if it gets too hot, just flip it up. I have a big head, there are brands/models where 3XL won't fit on my melon. Other brands/models the 2XL works. It saved my bacon a few weeks ago, when I got hit from behind by a pickup truck that followed me too closely (he got cited by state patrol for that) and I was behind a few cars that were swerving and braking for a duck family crossing the highway. I applied brakes as well, heard tires screech behind me, felt a bump, got lifted up and got slammed into the front of the truck, then landed on the street.
Helmet got scratched up, back protector saved my spine on impact and I'm still alive and recovering well.
I agree with you on not mandating stuff, I think it's everybody's personal responsibility. But I do strongly encourage everybody to gear up completely. The impact armor does help, I experienced it and am still walking because of it. Good video.

I know the feeling. I love the freedom of wearing only sunglasses.
BUT: My life has been saved twice by helmets. Back about 1982, I ran a Norton Commando into a pine tree while being stupid on a mountain rode. The Simpson Mod. 61 was completely crushed as I hit, flying horizontally. It had tree bark on the inside. I broke my back, but I didn't have so much as a headache. The helmet at one time was on display at a Simpson distributor. Might still be there with the wood still sticking out of it.
The second time was on I-75 in Kentcky.
It was super hot, and I stopped at the Welcome Center to get a drink of water. I strapped my helmet down on my seat to ride without it. As I got ready to get back out on the highway, I had a bit of a premonition. Something told me I had to wear it. I took off the straps and put the Shuberth helmet back on. Less than 2 hours later, I rear ended a car and was launched like a mortar. I landed head first on the asphalt and damaged my neck badly.
Those would have been two certain death accidents had I not been wearing.

I agree that it’s your choice on helmets. I’m totally against more laws. Personally I wear a helmet all the time. When I was a young teenager my Dad said to me,”Son, as you know you don’t have many brain cells!” So I figure I have to protect what little brain cells I have... Just a suggestion on your Bilt well helmet. If they have a flip up face shield for it consider getting it. This way your not locked into a fixed one and you can get air partially with it cracked open or all the way up at stops.

Funny you mention you were born in the 70's...I've been riding for 50-years now...and I've been through the WHOLE RANGE of 'helmet' thoughts. When I was young, I wore them because...dirtbikes-and-trees don't mix well. When I was older, well, it wasn't cool...better to 'die fast' than suffer. Older-still, it was 'hey, law says I don't have to now', so I didn't...but past 50 years old, I started realizing just how FRIGGIN' BAD 4-wheelers were driving (wasn't always THIS bad...was it?)...and seeing enough die over time from what should have been 'sign my cast' time, otherwise...I bit the bullet, went out and bought a really nice Bell helmet...3/4 (just like the old days)...only, I'm old, curious and resentful of 'cheap sales' in general, I wanted to know all I could about helmets...and one of the first thing I found was that MOST who DO wear helmets don't have the FIRST CLUE about how they work, why they work, and how to take care of them (or when to replace them). I wear a helmet now, all the time...I'm old, I'm gray, I'm bald...and the Marine Corps taught me one key concept...dying is a lot less cool than someone laughing at you for your damn headgear.
Here's a link of Dietmar Otte's 'Helmet Impact Chart'...and the irony is, MOST INJURIES come from the area of your face where it is covered by the full helmet (chin strap). Adam Sandoval also has a great video on his channel, where he explains some of the 'how it protects you', and cuts a helmet apart to show you what he's talking about.

When riding in Florida, I have tried riding without a helmet . Generally speaking, I hate having the wind dry my eyes while my skin is punished with sand, rain and bugs. A properly fitted helmet provides protection from the elements, reduces noise and generally makes riding long distances more pleasant (I never owned a bike with a protective fairing). Even if my state allowed me to ride helmetless, I still would.
However, I support choice and dont feel a need to force my opinion on others. In regards to helmet laws I would vote on rider choice.

I live in Cincinnati. One year, back in the late 90's, I was riding to FL for, I don't know, Bike Week, or Biketoberfest, or the FL State HOG Rally. One of those. Anyway, I stopped somewhere for dinner. TN or GA, I don't recall where. I noted a few baggers in the parking lot and went inside.
The hostess led me towards a booth and as she did so we walked past a booth with two couples who were clearly owners of two of those baggers. The guy who was facing my back as I passed mumbled "only pussies wear helmets". I decided I would ignore his stupid ass, but then two steps later I decided I wanted a fist fight instead. I stopped, turned around, and walked back.
I looked him right in the eye and said "I heard that bullshit". He said "huh, what?". I continued on, "I have a wife, I have two daughters, I have a Mom, and a brother. I love them all and they love me. Some of them rely on me for a roof over their heads, food on the table, and clothes on their backs. I have a responsibility to survive every ride intact so that I can fulfill my responsibility to them and not leave them in need. Now how about you, do you have anyone that loves you whom you love? Parents, siblings, a wife, kids, friends?". He answered "yes, a wife, two kids, a Mom, two sisters". I asked "do any of them rely on you for the necessities of life?". Again he answered "yes". I looked him hard in the eye and asked "why don't you feel any responsibility to protect yourself during a ride so that you can go on providing for them? Do you not love them enough? Why don't you feel the same level of responsibility that I do?" He stared at me, unwilling to answer, and his wife leaned around, looked him in the face, and said "yeah!" as she elbowed him. You know what, she didn't exactly have helmet hair. With that I turned and went to my table. That guy studiously avoided making eye contact with me the remainder of my meal.
If you don't love anyone, and there is no one that needs you, then being cavalier with your life really doesn't matter. But, if there are people you love, people who love you, people who need you, people that will miss you, and you won't wear a helmet that will fully protect your head and face in a crash then you've chosen to tell those people that they matter less to you than your need to look cool does. That is an automatic failure of the man test.

In WA where I live, helmets are required so...I have two helmets. I have the Biltwell Bonanza that I wear in the spring and summer, and I have a Shoei full face I wear in the fall and winter. I have 3 bubble shields for my Bonanza and I really like them. My only complaint would be is that because the shield is fixed in place, it's hard to put on glasses or scratch your nose, etc.
We've had this discussion before, and I agree with you about the freedom to choose whether to wear a helmet. I personally always wear a helmet even when I'm in states that don't require one. It's a safety issue for me; I trust my own riding skills, I just don't trust people driving cars. We've all had those experiences where a driver changes lanes without looking or doesn't see you and starts to make a turn so for me it's just common sense to have a little extra protection.
    Thanks for the videos...

Keep this in mind when buying a helmet... Most of all impacts on a helmet during a motorcycle crash is in the front cheek and mouth area! Wear a full face brother I live In Ohio where we don't have to wear them but I do anyway! Stay safe!

I've got an Arai it's expensive yes but it's also hand built. Thing is I hardly ever wear it 😳Why ? Because it's so bloody noisy and I hate ear plugs. I actually have become a big fan of AGV in my 47 years of riding. One of these helmets was put to the test back in 1979 and saved my face.

Six days after this video came out I was rear ended. Hit my head on the windshield hard enough to knock me out and get a concussion among other less serious injuries while wearing a helmet. I'm sure I wouldn't be typing this if I hadn't had one on. Gets hot as Hades here in Texas too but I'm going to sweat my bald head off before not wearing one. I agree it should be everyone's choice but I've had my mind made up.

Bought my first modular flip up in 09 while taking delivery of then new FXSTC. Few weeks later a car passed me on freeway heard this ping off the front of helmet?? Stopped at our favorite old school biker establishment. The release button was jammed. Took awhile but we got it to open Hole about size of Double 00 buckshot had punched into chin bar jamming mechanism. No telling how far it would have penetrated into my neck.
Another item you may consider is ability to flip open chin bar at stop lights, keeps you cooler.

When I was 18 I was ripping around on a 4 wheeler without a helmet. My buddies dad came out and yelled at me to put a helmet on. 5 minutes later I wrecked bad into an old oak tree. Face planted into the tree but hobbled away with only a broken knee. If I hadn’t been wearing a helmet, it would have been much worse. I’ve worn a full face helmet every time I ride from that moment on.

You know why I’m sure but I’ll say it anyway......Because the EPS deteriorates over time and after about 5-7 years is useless absorbing impact energy......I never wore a helmet until about 7 years ago...too many friends lost because they hit their head changed my mind about helmets.....I’m not judging anyone at all...just a change I made for my own situation...

I've just recently subscribed and I'm really enjoying your vids. I'm a 1972 model myself, I heard you say you was a 70s model. I love this video about helmets. Im in Alabama, here its mandatory (thankfully) or I probably wouldn't of had 1 on. Long story, but I'll shorten it up, I was headed to work, she was running late getting her kid to a band meeting before school..... Speed limit 65 on a grass median divided highway. She loses control, slides through the median at over 85 mph and hits the car passing me head on..... I never seen it coming. I was conscious on the scene, but with a 1" skull fracture behind my left ear, I didn't know I existed until 2 weeks later... NO my Scorpion lid DID NOT fail me! I'm ugly naturally, but the scrapes all around that lid would've been my face... I survived 2 cars hitting head on at over 70 mph with each other and then sliding into me, all because of gear. Thank you for your channel, I'm really enjoying it.

Cathy asked “When are you getting a Harley?” I got my Wi learners permit and bought a 2014 Sporty Superlow. Had to wear a helmet during that period. After passing the Wi road test, I got home, took off the helmet and rode around the block! Always wore one since… Now have a 2019 FXLR and a new helmet.

Growing up riding motocross, snowmobiles, etc the transition to a helmet on my cruisers was a pretty easy one.. currently live in a helmet mandated state, but the occasional trip to New Hampshire and being able to take it off reminds me of why I wear one.... on a Dyna, so probably end up with more wind on me then the bagger guys, but it just beats ya up. Have a big ol football for a head myself, and other than the Arai Signet (used to be the Profile) I can't find a fullface that I can wear comfortably... spendy but worth it. I lived in PA when I started riding and the state had a helmet law back then and damn glad they did. I had a crash and woke up under a Mustang with the right side of my helmet shattered and I've been wearing one ever since and always will, it saved my life or at least from serious head injury. My favorite is a 3/4 with a full face shield that flips up, clear for night riding and protects against rain, hail and cold or flipped up on hot days to get some air. Your family depends on you to stay healthy so your doing the right thing. I do believe in the right to make your own choice, don't really care for helmet laws for adults

I also suffer from the Cheek squish and a semi-oval head. After speaking with helmet reps and parts sales people, I found the Shoei Neotech II. The beauty of Shoei is that you can get thinner cheek pads. for venting, it has a catfish, top and venturi (back) vent. I do not feel any of them. For you, I would recommend suggest trying a rounder helmet.

When I was younger I hated the thought of wearing a helmet. For various reasons. Then when my oldest daughter was born I started to look at it differently. And then when I went into neuro rehab work the lights came on. The difference between continuing to be able to ride after an unfortunate accident and drooling on yourself for the remainder of your unfeeling and paraplegic existence can be your head gear. Always do the smart thing. A bump on the unprotected noggin is life changing.
