    I lose so much hair in the shower. Clumps. I don't know why. My bloodwork is always normal, so I figure it's bc my hair is very fine and dry. Because of this, i try to avoid detangling my hair in a wet state bc i lose extra hair if i do that. (hair is extra fragile when wet). Instead, i finger comb my hair in a dry state before stepping into the shower. To detangle more when conditioning, i open my hands so my fingers are spread, and start to rake through each side of my head (enough to lift the hair from the scalp), then i shake the hair gently to remove the tangles--i do not comb through. I sometimes get better results if i turn my head upside down and do this. After that, i scrunch my curls with the conditioner still in, then rinse, then scrunch again to get the excess water out while reforming the curls.

      Have you tried going to the dermatologist? I suffered from the same thing and the doc recommended something and it has stopped shedding in clumps, I know how heartbreaking that can be.

      I notice the same thing SOMEtimes. I wonder if it’s hormonal. How long do you go between wash days? They say we shed 50-150 hairs per day. If we don’t brush our hair daily, the shedded hairs stay stuck in between the rest. So when you wash you would lose those built up hairs falling out at once. I’m on daily hair vitamins. In some cases I see improvement. I’ve also been deep conditioning more often and steaming my hair as I apply because my hair is low porosity. I notice less knotting when my hair has been moisturized properly. Good luck. It’s awful, I know. I’m 57 and I do think part of my issue is hormonal. Oh, and Gena mentions clarifying. Because I am low porosity I clarify nearly every wash day. I use a light clarifier 1-2 times a week and a heavy clarifier a couple times a month, especially before steaming and deep conditioning.

      @@franmorr1966 I wash my hair every 1-3 days. It just depends bc I horseback ride 3 days a week and I absolutely wash my hair on those days even if I washed it the day before. Otherwise I try to go 2-3 days. I use to have low porosity hair when it was virgin, but now that Ive been coloring my roots with permanent color for several years to hide my greys, it is no longer low porosity due to the damage that color causes. I also think my greys are the cause for more knotting. As for hair loss, I only lose a ton of hair in the winter. The extreme hair loss starts every late fall and ends when things warm up in late spring. So I think my hair gets super parched and that's why I lose so much? Idk. It doesn't make sense bc I put oil on it every time I wash it, plus sometimes when I refresh it. I also use a leave in and my curl mousse. Oil has been a key factor in keeping my knots at bay. I use a diy connection of olive, jojoba, and a tiny bit of castor oils, mixed with tea tree, lavender and peppermint essential oils. I also wear a silk cap at night. Sometimes I wonder if that has a hair loss effect. It certainly helps me get 2nd and 3rd day hair though.
      And at the end of the day, it could all simply be stress. Still why it's worse in the winter, I don't know.

    Hi Gena! I always double cleanse with my gentle sulfate free shampoos, but what about clarifying? If the clarifying shampoo lathers very good the first time, is it fine to clarify just once then? TIA!🌸🌸

    Okay, for me, this might be the most relatable and well explained video on washing curly hair. I have fine, high procity, wavy hair that breaks easily and tangles easily. There has been times I have gotten so frustrated with washing my hair and how much hair came out while washing my hair that I would cry. I'm going to try some of the tips, and hopefully, there will be no tears.

    Hey Gena, I found out I need to incorporate a lot more protein into my hair since its thin and high porosity.
    I was wondering if I should switch to protein styling products or if I should use the NYM protein mask as my deep conditioner once a week? (I usually only use it once a month)
    Any recommendations would be appreciated bc I don't know how much is too much protein

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  8 месяцев назад

      Do you have buildup perhaps and the conditioner isn't absorbing properly? Your hair shouldnt be knotting up again unless you're wrapping it up in a regular bath towel which can be damaging

    You recommended applying oil if brushing when the hair is dry before wash OR applying conditioner to wet hair before shampoo and brushing out tangles. Which method is less damaging?

    My 10-year-old has the same but shorter hair and it was always a struggle trying to get him to wash and brush it. I started using natural oils on his hair and leaving it in a few hours for detangling so it's easier to manage. I also started using all natural shampoo and conditioner for both of us (I'm actually using clay) and a homemade flaxseed gel which is wonderful.

    Some of the best changes I’ve made is double cleansing, emulsifying the shampoo before applying to spread it more easily, using a silicone massage brush to get my scalp really clean, fully rinsing shampoo out and using lukewarm warm water. I notice I loose less hair when I do this. Thanks for all the great tips Gena. I’m keen to try the AG renew clarifying shampoo too. I was using Olaplex 4C but it really drys my hair and scalp out.
