What are you Best/Worst moving experiences?
I didn't unrack any of my gear when I moved my studio (twice). I left everything in their respective racks and flightcases, including the cabling (that I rolled up neatly and taped shut in the back with plywood). I ordered a large rectangular flightcase for my BM-15As, and laid them facing together, fitting snugly 69-style, so to speak. My two basses and several keyboards had road or flight cases, and the outboard and 30+ rack mounted synths and samplers and audio interfaces stayed in their respective racks. I got a variety of storage containers from the Container Store, and stuck in all the loose stuff, and taped it up very carefully. Then I hired a piano mover for my grand piano, and professional movers for my racks and keyboards and amps, and monitors. And that was that. Oh, the mic stands, and keyboard stands, I taped up, and rolled up mafia style in my carpets, which the movers also handled. Laptops, desktop, screens and the ribbon mics I handled myself personally - needed to keep my ribbons upright at all time, so I hand carry them wherever I fly, in their original cases. I have some Apple plastic bags where I put the cases, and so it looks like I just bought them at the airport, and no one bats an eye at the extra cartage, so to speak.
I moved to indonesia in 2013. Put most of my stuff in styoreage, but take a motu 8 pre a few mics, cables in my suitacse, along with 20kg worth of electronics components, soldering iron etc...gee i got some funny looks in customs when scanned my bag ahaha...never again, those rubber gloves are cold man
I've been through it 3 times in the past 7 years, with another move coming within the next year. When compounded with the rest of an entire household move, the studio move is a pretty awful experience. All of the dust bunnies, sweating and crawling around behind desks and amps, knees and elbows on hard flooring...it's physically brutal! I think that you're spot-on with your advice.
Rule number One ! : Keep your monitor Boxes !!
This is a big one!
We defo need a video on why you had to move again because I'm super curious! It could help others learn. It will also be interesting to know how you are reusing the acoustic treatment? Wasn't that custom for the old space?
I kinda read between the lines.. either the location or the partnership didn’t pan out.
Sure I can see how it’d be a little bit interesting, but ultimately there are only so many reasons things don’t work out. Partnerships, building, rent, landlord, etc. If there was a way to make good content out of it without just seeming to be down on others or a situation he probably would, but I’m guessing he feels it wouldn’t be much more than just a needless story right now.
Man, what a bummer to move in and spend all that money just to have to move right back out. Sorry man, I really feel for ya!
What was wrong with the loft and cathedral ceiling studio ? I'm also curious.
Andrew, Are you able to speak about how to manage relationships within shared studio spaces? I'm not suggesting that is why you moved from your previous space, but if there are any elements that we can learn from you, it would be super helpful!
Good question… I was picking up this vibe over the past few weeks.
Council deemed a "commercial" space and not zoned for it? Or, with speed of move, a rental and owner sold? ...... But maaaaaan it gotta hurt, that basement studio a gorgeous one
Lesson one of moving in with someone: make sure it's the right partner. Moving 3 times within 5 weeks is less of an organisational problem but more of a social problem.
Agreed. I hope no relationships were harmed in the making of this video!
You're assuming it was a partner thing - what if it was a noise issue (basements usually have residents above them), or another nuisance? Assumption is the mother of all FUs.
you gotta tell us why after one week.. thats unheard of
studio got sucked up by aliens :/
GOOD WORK! So glad you ended up in the studio space you are finally in now! Best spot yet
Sounds like such a rough time man, but thanks for still using it as a moment to teach others! I've thought about using road cases for my rack units because I'm renting and worried about when I have to move and this just cemented that idea for me.
We need to know! We need to know! What happened? Why did you move out. Why did it not work out?
Continued Blessings on your journey 🙂
Thank you! You too!
I'm looking forward to seeing content from the new space!
Thanks dude!
Congrats on the new place,- hope everything´s gonna work out for you.
Had an old musician friend who lived by the mantra:
It´s gonna be a long time ´till I get tired of rock music.
Won´t be long ´till I get tired of hauling it around!
Congrats on the new studio!
Thank you!!
Always continue forward.
👏🏾👏🏾
Sorry to hear that it didn't work out! That was a great space, and I'm grateful that you documented it so we could learn from the process. Do you plan to ever build a studio from the ground up on your property?
I’m moving my studio in a couple of months so I’ll definitely keep these in mind!
Matching tubs and/or rolling foot lockers are a key storage item for my gear and accessories. The Sterilite type stack well and are easy to move. Slap a label on each and keep a log of what goes in each locker number. Being able to grab a pile of them and go quickly is very helpful. Large duffel bags also make great cable storage. They're great to load and move too as they will conform a little to surrounding items making for a tighter load pack in a car.
Dude! What the hell happened? I feel for you big time. Well done for keeping your head down and working through it!
I have been out of pocket for a while. I was unaware that all the packing and moving was happening. What a bummer, hope this time is more permanent.
All that work.. painting and moving. For one week? That is just insanity. Sorry to hear this sounds like a nightmare. Hope you eventually find something permanent.
May I ask why you had to move out of your home studio? That was a bangin' setup!
The new space looks great! Which converters are you currently using?
Thanks man! Galaxy 32
What happened to the Trident 68 mixer?
Man, I wish you made this video a month ago I just moved yesterday and I could've used these tips!
Although overall I did most of the stuff you mentioned 😁
Moving this much would drive me mental!!! Sorry to hear that this is happening.
I literally just moved my home studio last month. Coincidentally saw Andrew across the Kroger parking lot the day we closed on the house
Ugh.....I am still getting over my most recent move from 10 years ago.....moving blows. I would love to hear more about what happened, why, etc... I liked your old studio over the garage....what was behind the moves?
"On The Move" studios back in business haha. Also, at least now you know if you guys ever fall on hard times, you could probably start a pretty successful moving company lol.
I WANT A VIDEO OF A RECORDING SESSION. GREETINGS FROM SPAIN !!
I would recommend finding a commercial space and stop the residential build-outs. You have the gear and cash flow to make something a longer term or forever space.
Thanks for the recommendation
I have to move my Studio every Summer, When Fire Season blows around the Stress is through the Roof, So now I'm Building a Mobile Recording Rig and a new Cinder Block and Concrete Studio.
The negative of my last studio move was the immense amount of downtime. The positive was that I sorted through some things that I really did not need any longer. I ended up selling some items to improve the sound treatment and aesthetics of my new place.
I would also add: STRETCH WRAP!! Small one for those odd shaped items and a large one for larger items or furniture you can't/won't break down - make corners out of cut up cardboard and EPS (a roll of that too!!), and stretch wrap all around a few times and you are set!! Also, a hand truck, ratchet straps and you'll make fewer trips and sace your back... but get a back support belt too!! 🤘🏻
WOW. Sorry Andrew. It seems you have moved countless times over the few years I have been watching you. I cannot imagine spending all that money and having to leave in just three weeks. May I ask what the heck happened? It maybe beneficial to others that may fall into this situation? I see you got a Ferrofish A32pro. I spent nearly a year deciding to buy that and got it and am very happy with it and my RME UFX III. I got 40 I/O now.
Sounds like you need to put everything in Anvil racks and cases and hire a cartage company! LOL!
why did he move?
so confused love the spaces
I Don't even enjoy moving around the gear to clean the studio (I do it anyway)
But to move spots 😂 😂 a nightmare
I'd say that THe pack needs to be The largest stuff first into the truck. I've moved probably 10 times.. Suburb to suburb City to City and Country to Country.. I've been there.. Big hug for you and the challenge.
I'd appreciate it if you could make a video on how to find a studio space. How did you find yours? This would be interesting. Thanks!
This is a house my family has been living in for 2 years. I just bought a new house and am keeping this one for the studio.
@@itsstudiotime Excellent, my congratulations! I'm also considering buying a house. Do you have any experience with basements? Is it essential to have a basement to use it as a studio space? Would a "regular" home with no basement also work for a drum studio in particular? Anyway, thank you for replying. I really appreciate it.
Yes. Way too many times. It’s one of the reasons I have so many original songs because the gear was in boxes but I could still write.
All the food ur eating always looks so good hahahah
I can't even imagine moving that many times in such a short time, let alone ever. I'm hoping to move out of my basement eventually, but not more than once.
dude how the heck are you moving studios so often, and so quickly? I would just go back into my house if that was the case. or do what I did... I build a 450 Sqft shed from the ground up specifically for my studio in the backyard. Did all the work took about 4 months and spent $5,300 a fraction of the cost.... did all the soundproof, treatment, electrical, air conditioning, wiring, sound both about 20sqft, drum/instrument tracking room about 40 sqft....and the rest of the room is for mixing.
The move out wasn't by choice, that's for sure. The shared space just didn't work sadly.
Usually I'd just follow some of the guidelines on the HDD and restart from scratch. It's not like moving a yacht, but hey... Namastè.
I feel Like "Some People" Maybe Asking A.M. UnEthical Questions .
I Also Am interested in What Happened. However For The Itegrity of Not only him personally But, His Buisness as well.
its probably Best To just let his words Be the Answer.
"That Space Did Not work Out"
What happened?
Didn't hear a word about moving your studio....too busy wondering why you had to move three times. Hoping your family is ok, because that's way more important.
Family is great - appreciate it!
A comment you made towards the end suggested that you were still in the same build? You said something about the live room upstairs is still available... The reappearance of one of your kits is telling. Some one suggesting a commercial space. I suspect its a fair amount more money. Still, being at the whim of a landlord though its turning out to be rough on the business
Without sharing names and remaining vague … what happened to cause all this craziness? What a bummer! Hang in there!
I'm so confused??
2 mins in, I don't think I'm going to watch this video just now - but will save it for later. It's too stressful for me. Sorry you had to move like that. I've done it twice in the last 2 years. But next time will be a lot more difficult. Because I've a lot more stuff now. On the plus side, next one will be a permanent one again, in my own building. I never want to share walls and ceilings with others, ever again. Maybe that was your situation too, especially being a drummer and working with bassists and electric guitarists.
Hoping this is the last move for a good long while! 👍🏾👊🏾
You said the new space was amazing... what happened?
It was. The person I partnered with had something personal happen and I had to get out of there within days.
@@itsstudiotime Sorry to hear. But I'm impressed how fast you are to move and setup, probably due to the good planning.
@@itsstudiotime Yikes man I feel for you. I can't imagine the stress involved, which you seem to be handling like a champ. Possibly one of your most profound teachings here --moving forward in the face of adversity.
Again???? oh man!!
He is ready to cry all the time
andrew comes across as such a nice guy, if i were local i'd come and help him move!
So is all the moving why you have a handle on your dog? lol
I'm so confused LOL ??
i dunno man, picking up this weird vibe that you don't like moving
NIGHTMARE!!!!!!! That's what I say..
A week later? god damn lol
Yeah fml.
And now he is loughing
The main thing that you learn here is how waste you money, first with the trident console and now with this, how many people follow this, are enthusiastic about get gear or moving then later on see how here change gear and place like change underwear, have followers is a responsibility IMO, people follow, and wants to be like you but not every one have the same budget to go around wasting money
Welcome to real life, my guy. No one uses one piece of gear forever, and life is messy. My channel is just sharing what actually happens - mess and all. Most important thing is to not let anything stop you from what you love.
The main thing i learned was life is unpredictable, if you watch this and decide to waste money on an ACTUALLY unnecessary move then that's on you dude. Everyone can be responsible for themselves.
Moving studios sucks, I've done it 4 times in 20 years.
Just buy a building.
