When I was in HS, around 84', our music teacher in band played this song as an example of a perfectly constructed contemporary tune. She said what made it so perfect was how everything, every part exclusively served the whole of the song. Steve does a breathtaking job and is at the peak of his ability, Neal lays down one of the best rhythm tracks of all time, Smith is tight, in the pocket with the time changes and key changes with an almost bolero feel to the break, then Greg and his harp take center stage. Just an amazing song.
Greggs solo at the end is the very best harmonica solo of all of recorded music And I love the one in when the Levee breaks but this one is that good its better.
If you dig harmonica, you have to check out Blues Traveller. The lead singer plays the most intricate, badass harp you have ever heard. Dude is the EVH of the harp.
Gregg is literally an SFBA Rock Royalty Legend. Saw them on this tour, with Jon in 18', and Gregg with his band FREE on Santa Cruz Beach in 2010 where they did Santana of course, some solo stuff & some Journey. They were great. I wish Journey (Neal?) & Everyone could have gotten past all the infighting. If they can tour with 2 keyboardists, why not Gregg for a while tour. He seemed game. Gregg & Neal could open with Santana era etc. Imagine how cool that would be ? Before it's too late. Then imagine the fainting women if SP walked out & he & Gregg did Just the same way/feelin that way 🤣 Arnel is on record that it would be his dream to share the stage with SP anytime anywhere. God knows all their egos should be satisfied by now and they're swimming in cash Rich except for Gregg maybe, & SP's ego is retired in Maui lol. Personally I'd rather see other resurrections. EVH back. Bon Scott & Brian with Malcolm & Angus, or Def Leppard with 3 Guitarists, Steve Clark #1 of course. But Journey would sell out every seat in Arenas worldwide and make a lot of wives & GF's really happy. That would be good for the guys & pay benefits for years haha 😂
Ridiculous talent.....this performance is amazing and they should release it again. The message will always be current. Like much of their music. To me....this was the perfect Journey lineup.
Yes, they are good in concert. Saw them in concert in July 82 in Norman Oklahoma. It was 3 nights. Saw all 3 of them. Each concert was totally different for all 3. Enjoyed it all very much
They also should've had Still They Ride as a single. Journey had so much vocal, songwriting skills and musical talent that they could let a tremendously written and composed song like Still They Ride sit on the back burner and still recieve huge success with Escape.
I remember looking at the pictures on the sleeve of Captured Live album and there is one with Gregg Rolie playing harmonica. I understood then that Journey played this song live during Departure tour.
In this era you were a fan of Rolie & Perry complimenting each other on vocals. But here we see Rolie take it up another notch and complimenting Perry's vocals and Schon's guitar with the harmonica.
@@summermcpherson8209 Hi Summer, my favorite song Journey performed that day was "line of fire" from their Departure album, because the song includes a gunshot sound effect. When the song played live, the controlled explosive is so loud that it will bring the live audience to their feet! Do you have a favorite Journey song?
@@summermcpherson8209 Summer, those are great albums, my favorites are Infinity, Evolution, and Departure. Also, my favorite Journey line-up was when Greg Rolie and Steve Perry were both in Journey. I can't say I have a favorite song, I enjoy listening to these albums over and over very much.
Greg doing that harmonica a fantastic song. These guys were just so great together. Wish they were still a group..love me all but Steve my favorite man..
As much as I love Escape and Frontiers and that explosive era of Journey, the Perry/Rolie era is my favorite. The music was much more blues rock-focused and their vocals really complemented each other. This is a rarely heard track from that era and one of the better album tracks from Departure. The 12-string sounds so cool on this song.
now it's Nov 2018, & I'm so very very grateful that Steve Perry is back with his new music album Traces !! 💜 ... He finally got his love & passion for music back & blessed us all by sharing it !! 💜 If he ever does decide to tour again, it will probably be to promote his own new songs ... I really doubt he will ever tour with Journey again (& that's ok ... if he did, it would be a wonderful surprise ... I'm just very happy he's back & we have new music !!) 💜💜💜
I was lucky enough to see this Departure tour three times in 1980 -- May, July and September. It was magical and I'll never forget it! Stellar musicians and vocals. Thank you for sharing this!
Wow! Journey really rocked back then! Its my favourite period of their's.And as for the lead singer? Pitch perfect as usual........just call him P.P.P- PITCH PERFECT PERRY!
That's simply awesome. A DEPARTURE song. Killer record! When of fames John Dowland, George Frederic Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven would have been born at the same time like these damn good guys, their music would sound just as good and become classics.
I think this was the absolute best lineup. Rolie’s voice and style added a whole different dimension. Cain is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something about these 5 together that made this the best Journey. And of course, Perry. Augeri was pretty good until his voice took a hit. Never cared much for Arnel. No one can beat or measure up to the true Perry vocal... cheesy as his stage moves may have been.
When was the last Journey even played this song live?? Today in 2018 their set list is just boring. This is when the band shined. Miss Rolie and the shared lead vocals with Perry. The band today just doesn't have this chemistry today.
This is probably the only song in the group's entire pre-Jonathan Cain era where Gregg dug out his harmonica. I still would like to know if he played harmonica on any of the band's first three albums?

No idea why this song and "Lovin' You Is Easy" was left off the "Captured" live album. Could have easily replaced "Dixie Highway". I saw this show on 28 August 1980 and it was the best one of three Journey show's I've seen live, with the "Frontiers" tour second and "Raised On Radio" third.
I say that all the time...Gregg is not that tall (according to supposedly excellent sources ) He is supposed to be about 5'10 or so but he was broad, he usually wore heels, and the other guys in Journey were on the more petite size (for an adult male) so with that all combined it made Gregg look like a linebacker next to the others.
HMACDONALD69 I've met Steve Perry and Neal Schon and they are very petite. I couldn't believe how short Neal was.Gregg Rollie is about 5'10" or 5'11", just like you said. His frame is wider in the shoulders than Steve and Neal. Ross Valory is tall and thin and J. Cain is an average looking male in size. They're so cute. 🎹 🎼
Dale Moar Freddie mercury was sick as hell and never missed a note, perry is a "favorite "of yours because not in any ranking or logical thought (That's actually true) is perry listed higher than Mercury, for the simple fact that Mercury has a bigger range and was also huge in more than 1 decade, and no , no steve was not.. so go ahead with your misguided thoughts but don't sot here and try ti convince anyone that what you are saying is true!

Greg felt lost not playing his keyboards, but he rocked the hell out of that harmonica!
Greg Rolie killing it on the harmonica. Awesome!
I really miss those days with Greg Rollie. Love Neal's Journey Through Time
